Let’s start with the * first. As you know, the booking and scheduling of movies is an inexacting science. It is part data deciphering, part history and tradition, part availability of creative product, and part darts. The dart part is the hard part. Some say that thirty years of movie business experience gives one the hunch edge, as in ‘All else failing, bet on star power’, or, ‘Our demographic don’t do Zombies’. Or even, ‘It debuted at 20 million and a 7.0 at IMDb’. You catch the drift? I went to bat years ago wanting to pinch hit for our traditional methodology of film selection and won a few battles. You will recall BOYS IN THE BOAT, OPPENHEIMER, KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON AND DUNE TWO as examples of tentpole blockbusters that I managed to convince the coach that if the count when to 3-0 I could take a rip if I liked the looks of a plump fastball down the middle and belt high. There is some trust involved, but still, the characteristic I feel is most important in this critical area is confidence. My confidence in you, our regulars, the core demographic responsible for keeping our lights on and floors clean. Brad Pitt in F1 and Danny Boyle’s 28 YEARS LATER. Caveat, it is going to take some finagling on our part to tear F1 away from the Pavilion if it has a good weekend, so let’s vote. Let me hear your democratic, open minded and open sourced voice. F1 or 28 YEARS? Let freedom ring!
LIFE OF CHUCK. Rumor has it that the Mike Flanagan/Steven King tandem have already agreed to a three film pact for upcoming treatments of King’s IP. Should they turn out to be half as good as LoC, I will comfortably rest in the confident glow that they will be quality efforts of high conceptual intent. In other words, can’t wait. I find it interesting that in LoC, both writer and screenwriter (adaption for film) both were acutely aware of the fine line they tiptoed around. In any number of scenes, the best of them involved dancing, the line was never crossed, the shark never jumped, and not once did they succumb to decent into hackneyed cliche or worse, the dreaded twee. Being too cute can kill a scene faster than a semi-automatic flyswatter. Therefore I herby proclaim LIFE OF CHUCK to be, officially, here at least, the Feel Good Film of the Year. Thanks Chuck.
MATERIALITS. A new look at the modern dating scene as told by Celine Song. Technology marches ever onward but since the Stone Age till now, what have we learned?
RAINIER: A BEER ODYSSEY. Good, old-style Seattle fun, since 1974. The pictorial history of the beer from here. Filmmakers in attendance with lotso shwag. One screening only on Tuesday, July 1. RRRRRRRRRRRR.
