BIG HLT thanks to all who came out over the weekend to support our Mike Nelson Town Hall and the pair of MY OMAHA screenings.
ELEANOR THE GREAT. I remain unconvinced that covering up a lie for 50 years, living each day under the burden of deceit and having it eat away at your soul like a parasite is any worse than a desperate plea for contrition, however painful. As the saying goes, everyone deals with grief, sorrow, loss and their ensuing contributions to loneliness and despair in different ways and at their own pace. Our heroine, the great ELEANOR, fibs her way into a tangled web of moral complexity and must find a satisfactory way out. We, the audience, get to judge her success. Scarlet Johansson’s directorial debut suffers, I think, from an iron-poor script.
BREAKING WAVES. Kelda Wood is the first para-athlete to row across the Atlantic Ocean solo. Following this "ordinary" woman's journey through the tallest peaks in the world, the GB Paralympic squad, and cancer, inspires us to go on our own journey. The second in a three-part film series co-sponsored by EMERGENCE FILMS, who’s Sienna Beckman will be on hand to intro and host a post-screening Q&A. We could all use another hero right about now.
ARE WE GOOD? Expectedly hilarious yet intensely poignant, Marc Maron speaks to the undulating waves of his career, as well as his thoughts on aging, cats and relationships, with a sharp vulnerability cut against his signature biting paranoia. Striking a beautiful balance of humor and melancholy, Steven Feinartz’s film solidifies Maron as one of the most compellingly complicated voices in comedy whose reflections on loss (see above) ring painfully true.—Liza Domnitz at Tribeca.
6 GUN REBELS & WHYSKEY CREEK. Recorded music played back on LP (Long Playing for you youngsters) sounds better than a CD. The same way that live music feels better. My record collection in the 70’s had plenty of BAD COMPANY & LYNRD SKYNYRD. This ass-kickin’pair of Kitsap Bands team up on Saturday, Nov 1, to pay tribute to the good old days of Rock N Roll. Two bands, one show, no cover, no kidding. Tickets on sale here and now. Be there or be square.
UPDATES, RUMORS AND LEAKS. Yes, we remain steadfast in our effort to upgrade and provide operating capitol via our SEAT SALE fundraiser. Should you be among the Islanders interested in keeping the good ship HLT afloat, a modest donation will get you yours. Those being new seats with your name on the back. Interested philanthropists are encouraged to call me at 206.451.4336 to discuss. We have added two big new shows for Dec and Jan. A Marcus Kitley and Danny Figgins collaboration for a Christmas Gala on 12.12 and the HS JAZZ BAND will officially open for the LADY A spectacular on Jan 10.
Going to leave you today with another spin of the LIVE MUSIC spot that, hopefully will motivate you to head to the page where you can pick a pair (or more) of tickets for the NOV 1 event. Turn it up.
Ciao,
Kevin
