Standing O’s to Charlie Poekel and everyone who came out to watch the enticingly diverse collection of films at the third successful running of the BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FILM FESTIVAL. My personal fave this year was the black and white absurdist fever dream captured in OBEX. Until you work behind the scenes at an event of this magnitude, you will never truly appreciate what actually happens backstage, so my sincere thanks to the artists and volunteers who thrive in the trenches.
THE COMMENTARY.
THE MAN WHO SAVES THE WORLD? Controversy, conspiracy, legend, myth or…… An eccentric American peace activist pursues his belief that he's destined to unite South American tribes and save the Amazon, taking drastic steps to fulfill what he sees as an ancient prophecy.
UNDER THE OPEN SKY. The third and final (for 2025) film in the EMERGENCE FILMS series. Rachel and Sienna have produced this intimate look at the real challenges facing traditional gazing techniques as Ahmed’s life as a nomadic camel-herder in Western India is turned upside down when grazing land is sold to private corporations, and he has to choose between keeping his traditional livelihood or modernising with the times. Filmmakers will be in-house for intro and Q&A.
BUGONIA. Yargos Lanthrimos is on a roll. PRETTY THINGS, KINDS OF KINDNESS and now the Ari Aster produced BUGONIA. We’ve been playing the trailer all week and the plot is classic 1950’s Sci-fi with Jesse Plemmons and Emma Stone as leads. So….much….fun.
MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON. The second I first heard about this one, my poor heart skipped a beat (and my pacemaker beeped). A cinematic journey that fuses sports, skiing, art, and music into a visually immersive experience, exploring the landscapes, creativity, and adventure that define Benchetler’s work. And with the good ol’ Grateful Dead doing the score. Islander producer Ali Meiners will be in-house for Monday’s final screening to cap the four-day run.
HOPE IS A SONG. Local filmmaker (and author and musician) Stella Saleh brings her doc on the courageous women of Iran to the screen on Sat Nov 15 at noon. It is a free screening with Jacqueline Miller, Pres. and CEO of the World Affairs Council for a Q&A. Bring your curiosity.
COPA ’71. Is the name of the event famous as the Women’s Soccer Championship won by <<<NO SPOILERS HERE>>> It is also a fund raiser for GOOD PLAY AMERICA a local NPO run by Alejandro Henao and co sponsored by Bainbridge FCC. Bring the kids.
YARDSALE. Josh Anderson’s fourth epic ski film is to kamikasi downhill freestyle what Evel Knivel was to motorcycles. Maybe more-so. Forty-five high intensity minutes of daredevil stunts on a pair of P-Tex reinforced carbon fiber maple planks. Bring your dramamine.
That is all I got today folks. Call me, text me, e-me, write me or visit me. Any way you like it, I have got us to here, your move.
Ciao,
Kevin
