RENTAL FAMILY. “We sell emotions” is the company by-line where an almost washed-up American actor finds work impersonating missing persons. An absent groom, a MIA father, a mentor to a child, you get the idea. Win number one for concept ingenuity. Beautifully filmed in Tokyo, win number two, and masterfully portrayed by Academy Award winner (The Whale) Brendan Fraser (who attended Seattle’s Cornish Institute) for win number three. Three for three. Perfecto!
BIG NIGHT. FREE special event screening on Thanksgiving Day, because, well, why not? The finalists were BABETTE’S FEAST, PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES with the eventual winner being one of my all-time faves, BIG NIGHT. My fist viewing in 1996 was the inspiration behind my solemn pledge to one day build the dish Segundo successfully constructs known as Timballo.
LATE NIGHT COMEDY. Friday night Dec 5 @ 9pm, we kick off our second laugh-fest with Gabriel Rutledge, Mike Coletta and Monica Nevi. Get yer tickets over at EventBrite asap as they are moving at a brisk pace.
LET IT SNOW - ROCK N ROLL - DEC 12 (another Friday). Billed as our CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR, the night will feature the immense talents of TWO LOCAL BANDS, with Marcus and Heidi Kitley and company (including the recent addition of trumpeter STELLA SALEH) opening the show for headliners DANNY AND THE FIGGATONES. All (most) of your favorite Christmas and Hanukkah tunes wrapped up in traditional rock n roll structure and 4/4 time. There will be special give-aways, sing alongs, slow-dancing and mistletoe, yet still suitable for the whole family! I can almost guarantee a magical night to remember, maybe even one that goes down in HIS-TOR-REEEEE. Tix here.
Thanks to everyone who came out for our second Ukraine Benefit and the screening of PORCELAIN WAR. If you couldn’t make it, please take a look on your favorite streaming service and you will see one of those magical movies, in documentary form, that masterfully combines opposite ends of our human experience, art and war, into a moving and compelling call to action. Without having to spell it out.
COMING UP in JAN. CELEBRATE! FILM and MUSIC. A two-night experience in homage of the music of New Orleans. Friday Jan 9, the screening of the award-winning doc UP FROM THE STREETS, by local filmmakers Michael Murphy and Cicelia Eberle, both of whom will be here to intro and host a talk-back afterwards. The next night is a celebration of the music that made the film sizzle as THE REAL LADY A brings her acclaimed band to the stage for some tasty R&B. TIX HERE.
All for today folks. Hope to see you at the HLT. HAPPY THANKSGIVING.
Kevin
