One will immediately notice that the schedule has been modified. Sadly, the LADY A concert initially scheduled for Sat Jan 10 has been postponed. Let’s put the blame for this squarely upon the broad shoulders of the villain known as ‘circumstances beyond our control’, and leave it at that. However at the time of this writing (Sat night) we are trying to move the HS Jazz band, THE FLAMINGOS, to become the opening act for the UP FROM THE STREETS film on Friday night, Jan 9. This will be an outstanding evening of film & music. Updates as they happen on all our social channels. My apologies for the circumstance.

MARTY SUPREME. I am confident that given the assignment to write a thousand words on this absolute gem from Josh Safdie, it would not challenge my ability to over-exaggerate. Using superlatives where simple adjectives might suffice, has long been a stubborn tendency, but in this case, every modifier would ring mesmerizingly true. It is an amazing piece of artistry, a hyper-paced, brash, fearless and often uncomfortable ride with the titular character, Timmy C as Marty Mauser. Make no bones, rules are broken here, standards smashed and tropes exploited to absolute astounding effect. It is a loud, in-your-face, winner-take-all sprint with the devil in a footrace to determine who gets to hell first. And it is more fun to watch than anything this reported has witnessed in a decade or three. Ask IMDB, 8.3 or RT, 95% if you doubt my objectivity. Ohm and that onomonapea? Ping pong, crash boom, yada yada bing bang.

UP FROM THE STREETS. Island Filmmakers Michael Murphy and CILISTA EBERLE will screen their award-winning documentary on Friday night Jan 9. It is the visual story of the music of New Orleans, featuring a literal who’s who of the greatest blues, soul, jazz, R&B musicians of all-time. Including, for the rockers among you, Keith Richards, Sting, Harry Connick, Jr and Robert Plant.  Michael and Cilista will be on hand to intro and host a Q&A. And confirmed: THE FLAMINGOS, HS Jazz sextet will open the show at 5:45. Get yer tix now: HERE.

We have a busy January calendar of events with specials sponsored by Hannah Abrams, (LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL) 1.24 to honor Holocaust Remembrance Day, Bainbridge Island Rowing, (A MOST BEAUTIFUL THING) 1.24 and Squeaky Wheels, (CARS AND BIKES) 1.27. Each offering a thematic film relating to their respective interests.
