HLT# 161 - JIMMY JAMES of THE TRUE LOVES BAND

Kevin Lynch Season 5 Episode 161

Jimmy James, the iconic, semi-reluctant frontman for the legendary PNW instrumental funky soul outfit THE TRUE LOVES, has a motto, “If you don’t feel it, don’t play it.” Which, is, by a thousand percent, harder than it sounds. Mostly due to the musical reality that with any live performance, the respect and confidence necessary among bandmates to ‘make it land’ is rare. And that is what separates the great ones from the mere mortals.

After a two-year hiatus, on Saturday night, February 21st, THE TRUE LOVES  make their triumphant return to Bainbridge Island’s HISTORIC LYNWOOD THEATRE. As legend has it, the bands last performance was standing room only with those without a seat being the lucky ones, as dancing was the dominant vibe.

Fresh from a European tour and just after a swing through British Columbia, TRUE LOVES squeezed this one night in Feb for the gig in our house. And we couldn't be happier about it.

Jimmy and I used every second of the 40 allowed minutes from Zoom to cover topics ranging from his musical family, his sister played with Jimi, to his rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner prior to a Sounders soccer game. Rest assured that on Feb 21 an evening filled with instrumental soul, funky jazz and improvisational down-home, feel-good, big-band modern bop will get your bones movin’ and your soul a singin’.

Hope to see ya here on 2.21.26
