A PRIVATE LIFE. Jody Foster is renowned psychiatrist Lilian Steiner, who mounts a private investigation into the death of one of her patients, whom she is convinced has been murdered. French filmmaker Rebecca Zlotowski’s classy, curious whodunit caters to the sophisticated audience we like to call our core demographic. I appreciate the French-ness of this bold character driven take with plot twists with psychotic undertones. "Headlong I go for glory" is the French lyric from Psycho Killer, written by TALKING HEADS bassist Tine Weymouth. Now, at last, you know.
EMERGENCE FILMS SHORTS. A collection of shorts produced by Rachel and Sienna at EF.
LOVING ACROSS BOARDERS. Maddi Williamson & Co present an altruistic sampling of short humanitarian films.
OBAA. Starts Mar 6. Got my vote for Best Picture, so back it roars onto our big screen the week prior to the March 15 presentations. Just in case you forgot exactly how good it is. Of the 10 films (the Academy went from 5 to 10 in 2009) we screened 8 of them. For the third year running, local filmmaker ANDREW TAYLOR and I will be discussing all things Oscars on Wednesday for your listening edification.
SIRAT. Have you seen the trailer???? It plays like MAD MAX road tripping to BURNING MAN. Yet somewhere inside the danger, havoc and chaos, a father and his son search for his missing daughter. Based on the trailer alone, I predict expanded states of consciousness at the end of the hallucinogenic mirage that only an oasis of tormented humanity can conjure. For this is the desert and only the damaged survive.
BIG MUSIC NEWS. We keep the fire burning in March with a pair of shows for your participation, THE MARVIN HOFFERT JAZZ quintet takes the stage on Sat March 21 @ 7 followed the next week by the return of VICTIMS of LOVE, the West Coast’s quintessential EAGLES tribute band. You will remember two years ago they scorched the HLT with their harmonies and note-for-note echos of the classic Eagle tunes you know by heart. They’ll be back for a one-night gig on Sat March 28. Doors at 6, Show at 7. I am playing samples as part of our pre-show entertainment package of their last gig here so you’ll see what I mean about the scorching.
You heard it here first. We are now, officially, moving into 501(c)(3) status. This will dramatically affect both the way we do business and the means to do it with. Should any of you be specialists in this area and be willing to discuss the finer points of community service under a pro bono umbrella, please call me at once.
Enjoy the changing of the seasons folks, I can’t wait to get back on my bike and do the Battle Point to Lynwood Center daily commute. See you at the HLT.
