FANTASY LIFE: Is probably not what you think it is. Do not be fooled by the trailer as this is not a side-splitting, LOTFL, Rom-Com. Sure, there are a few chuckle-producing moments, a scene or two of uncomfortable human romantic danger and the protagonist’s propensity for self-deprecation, but it is devoid of any actual hilarity. Way more empathy. It is a sensitive look at people trying to be authentic, real, caring and compassionate. Toss in an amazing performance by Amanda Peet, and you have a refreshing, candid close-up of two people looking for the magic of love. Anything else would spoil the shared desert.

THE CHRISTOPHERS: The Guardian’s Benjamin Lee says, “The Christophers is a talky, at times incredibly funny, comedy drama with plot reversals that make it feel like it’s on the verge of a thriller. It doesn’t end up there, at least not strictly, but it’s unpredictable enough to never make us entirely sure just where it’s heading.” Enjoy the ride.

SPECIAL EVENTS:
SAT MAY 2. VISIBLE VOICES present another evocative evening of film with a MOVIES THAT MATTER screening of MARLEE MATLIN: NOT ALONE ANYMORE. Here is the link for tickets and more info on the event organizers, the beneficiaries and the film. Bonus FREE screening of CODA (22 best Pic) at 7.
SAT MAY 9. GATEWAY COMEDY presents LATE-NIGHT at the LYNWOOD. The producers tell me that the set up is looks like this: A panel of comedians do a set each, they take a break at which time they do a few group bong hits and return to see if Cheech & Chong had it right all along. This is a ‘Without a Net” presentation, and I disclaim any and all responsibility for its content. Which is probably a good thing. I am willing to try. Join us and see.
TUE MAY 12. OPEN MIC SCIENCE presents Islander and NOBEL PRIZE winner, Dr. Fred Ramsdell for a talk, slide show and hopefully a little Q&A. Free with OMS newsletter signup.
SAT MAY 16. DANA LYONS, is an International modern-day Pete Seeger, Woodie Guthrie (and maybe even Arlo) folkie who makes art and music from current events. What could be more important in this day and age? Mock the Nazi’s and fock the fascists has long been my motto. Free concert/revival by RSVP at Noon.
FRI MAY 22. GOOD DAY SUNSHINE plays live, note for note, song by song The Beatles seminal ABBEY ROAD (Tales a break and does whatever they do between sets) and returns (perhaps appropriately) to do the same for PINK FLOYD’s DARK SIDE OF THE MOON.
SAT MAY 30. THE HS JAZZ BAND hosts their annual Spring Open Mic event. I will have the starting time and more info next week, but put the date on your calendar as these kids have the swing.
