COMMENTARY.
DISCLOSURE DAY. One hundred and twenty million. Before marketing. The production cost of DISCLOSURE DAY. Made it back in eight national screening days. We helped a little. You did too. And as I can’t speak for all of you, I feel pretty good about it. From our sneak preview last Thursday night with Oscar winning Sound Designer GARY RYDSTROM to yesterdays three Sunday screenings, AND with four more days to go, I feel like we have furthered and fostered the art form for, while maybe not the next generation of film aficionados, certainly those 400 or so that witnessed it here. How cool is that? That is the sharing part of art that doesn’t get a lot of attention. The proximity to home, the community participation in a substantial work, shared, enjoyed and experienced by our neighborhood. Spielberg knows this, and uses it to great result in crafting his stories, allowing for humanity to struggle, doubt, fall, stumble…but always, or almost always, to eventually walk away somehow changed by the experience. As long as we hang around, stay in the game, listen, learn and evolve, we win. And we love to watch that process, the arc of that heroic narrative. That’s the magic we all want to take home like the last few remaining kernels of popcorn after the credits roll and, in this case, John Williams treats us to another symphonic delight. Thank you everyone for sharing this joyous experience with us. It is why we’re here.
KOKUHO. My good friend ELLEN MIYASATO tipped us to this one and brought aboard the folks at THE BAINBRIDGE ISLAND JAPANESE AMERICAN EXCLUSION MEMORIAL ASSOC as sponsors. It is a part of our on-going WORLD SERIES OF FILM program and tells an epic tale from acclaimed director SANG IL-LEE (Pachinko), KOKUHO (meaning “national treasure”) is a film of awe-inspiring scope and sumptuous beauty, and a monument to the artists who would sacrifice everything in the pursuit of the ultimate performance. Two screenings on Thursday & Fri @ 7. And BTW I would watch literally anything with KEN WATANABE.
SILENT FRIEND. It’s Doc Week at the HLT. One of two sharing our screen is SILENT FRIEND. In this exquisite, meditative journey through time and nature—from Ildikó Enyedi, director of the Academy Award-nominated On Body and Soul—a ginkgo biloba tree serves as a silent observer to human experience for more than a century. 2:25 PG 95% at RT.
Secondly is TIME AND WATER: An Icelandic writer preserves vanishing glaciers, departed grandparents, family memories, and flowing time in his personal archives, transforming loss into a time capsule. 1:33 PG.
ANOTHER MAN’S TREASURE. The largest rummage sale in the world is the star of STEVE STOLLEE’S documentary. Since 1960 the Bainbridge Island Rotarians have been staging this event, part yard-sale and part social social phenomena, to the benefit of local non-profits and the BI community. Great idea, no? Steve will be on hand for both screenings to answer your questions about almost anything.
ROAD TO EVERYWHERE. Independent film rocks. Call your rich uncle and offer him the title of Executive Producer (and points on performance), assemble your crew, and film your story. What do you want to say? What do you want to show or tell the world? Don’t overthink it. Some films, like this one, ROAD TO EVERYWHERE, are almost guaranteed to find distribution. Why? Because they spin a universal yarn, something these producers call ‘A coming of age story for adults’. And who couldn't use a little of that pixie dust right about now? Directed by MICHAEL SHOOB, who will be on the podcast next week to talk about it, and starring WHIP HUBLEY and ROBERT MIRABAL, it is a story of loss, love and courage under fire on a Hollywood to Arizona cab ride.
SWEET HOME ALABAMA. KERRIE ROE is the show runner for the Revisiting Rom-Coms event. Meet up across the street at the Marketplace before the screening of the REECE WITHERSPOON comedy starting at 6:30. If we can draw half as many patrons as we did yesterday for Bobby’s presentation of Independence Day, we’ll be in good shape.
GATEWAY COMEDY. Returns for another round of infused gigglery on Friday night, the19th at 9p. The format seemed to work to great effect their initial staging back in March, so here is round two.
Our 90th Anniversary celebration of film. OK, I’ve been promising to post ‘the list’ of Best Picture winners from 1936 to 2025, these are the films YOU get to chose to watch on the 25th and 26th, FREE, in celebration of our, well, resilience. You get to pick your favorite thee films and the ones getting the most love, win screen time. Pretty simple, a KISS event if ever there was. I will post the list tomorrow under separate cover.
STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER. GINA CORPUZ called the other day to inquire about showing the latest doc produced by the INDIPINO COMMUNITY OF BI, STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER. HONOR THY MOTHER, produced by LUCY OSTRANDER and Gina, was the initial doc created in this cultural genre by DON SELLERS. SFF continues the fascinating story of the mix of Indigenous and Filipino cultures in and around Bainbridge. Scheduled for Sunday, July 16th at 2.
And there you have if folks. Two weeks of high intensity, didactic and entertaining community programming. As we steamroll towards our 90th circle around the sun, we would like to thank all those who have supported our efforts over the years to provide this level of quality entertainment. We realize you have many options, what our marketing department calls the saturation percentage, and your decision to participate in these screenings, talks, special events and films, completes the connection between artist and community. Should you have a suggestion, comment, concept, or question, please command your device and call us at 206.451.4336.
