SILENT FRIEND. 2:25, PG, 95% at RT. It’s Doc Week at the HLT. One of two sharing our screen in stack formation is SILENT FRIEND. In this exquisite, meditative journey through time and nature—from Ildikó Enyedi, director of the Academy Award-nominated On Body and Soul—a ginkgo biloba tree serves as a silent observer to human experience for more than a century. Variety states it simply: After watching this loving, very funny and abundantly fertile film, hugging the nearest tree doesn’t seem like enough — it deserves your warmest embrace.

Secondly is TIME AND WATER: 1:33 PG. 90% RT. An Icelandic writer preserves vanishing glaciers, departed grandparents, family memories, and flowing time in his personal archives, transforming loss into a time capsule. From Roger Ebert.com; As meditative as Dosa’s film is, make no mistake, there’s an urgency to her work, as she documents both the beauty of the natural world and its rapid decline, often in the same frame. Focusing on Iceland’s glaciers and the monumental consequence of their loss, this work makes space for both lament and celebration. It’s a homily, presented with the potency and style of performance poetry.

PETER ASHER: EVERYWHERE MAN: Peter Asher, with a little help from his friends, Paul McCartney, Natalie Merchant, Twiggy, Danny Kortchmar, Steve Martin, Eric Idle, Jane Asher, Yoko Ono, James Taylor, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, Andrew Gold, Ben Fong-Torres, Beverly D’Angelo, Paul Shaffer, Weird Al Yankovic, in a delicious look back on the British Invasion. Yes. I’ll never dance with another……

TRAINSPOTTING: Beyond its raw, dark comedic tone, TRAINSPOTTING is ultimately a coming-of-age story in reverse. It captures the chaotic rebellion of 1990s youth subculture, asking why anyone would blindly accept society's standard expectations—such as a 9-to-5 job, a career, and consumerism—over the chaotic freedom of doing drugs. The iconic "Choose life" monologue perfectly summarizes Renton's internal battle between choosing a conventional life and choosing something else.

ANOTHER MAN’S TREASURE. The largest rummage sale in the world is the star of STEVE STOLLEE’S documentary. Since 1960 the Bainbridge Island Rotarians have been staging this event, part yard-sale and part social phenomena, to the benefit of local non-profits and small community business’. Great idea, no? Steve will be on hand for both screenings to answer your questions about almost anything.

ROAD TO EVERYWHERE. Independent film rocks. Call your rich uncle and offer him the title of Executive Producer (and points on performance), assemble your crew, and film your story. What do you want to say? What do you want to show or tell the world? Don’t overthink it. Some films, like this one, ROAD TO EVERYWHERE, are  almost guaranteed to find distribution. Why? Because they spin a universal yarn, something the producers call ‘A coming of age story for adults’. And who couldn't use a little of that pixie dust right about now? Directed by MICHAEL SHOOB, and starring WHIP HUBLEY and ROBERT MIRABAL, it is a story of loss, love and courage under fire on a Hollywood to Arizona cab ride. Michael will be on-hand Sunday only for intro and Q & A.

SWEET HOME ALABAMA. Kerry Roe is the show runner for the Revisiting Rom-Coms event. Meet up across the street at the Marketplace prior to the screening of this Reece Witherspoon classic comedy starting at 6:30. If we can draw half as many patrons as we did on Father’s Day for Bobby’s presentation of Independence Day, we’ll all be better off after some hearty laughs.

GATEWAY COMEDY. Returns for another round of infused gigglery on Saturday night, the 18th at 9p. The format seemed to work to great effect with their initial staging back in March, so here is round two. Rated R. Tix here.

Our 90th Anniversary celebration of film. OK, I’ve been promising to post ‘the list’ of Best Picture winners from 1936 to 2025, these are the films YOU get to chose to watch on the 25th and 26th, FREE, in celebration of our, well, resilience. You get to pick your favorite three films and the ones getting the most love, win screen time. Pretty simple, a KISS event if ever there was. Official ballot is here.

STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER. GINA CORPUZ called the other day to inquire about showing the latest doc produced by the INDIPINO COMMUNITY OF BI, STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER. HONOR THY MOTHER, produced by LUCY OSTRANDER and Gina, was the initial doc created by DON SELLERS. SFF continues the fascinating story of the mix of Indigenous and Filipino cultures in and around Bainbridge. Scheduled for Sunday, July 16th at 2.

Big HLT thanks to everyone who made the pilgrimage out to see KOKUHO Thu and Fri. Spanning cultural chasms and strengthening the community bonds they inspire is central to our programming. The intensity behind the kabuki curtain played to dramatic effect, inspiring awe and a deep sense of appreciation. Thanks to ELLEN MIYASATO and ELLEN SATO FAUST for their organizing efforts and to the BAINBRIDGE ISLAND JAPANESE-AMERICAN EXCLUSION MEMORIAL ASSOC. It’s so beautiful. The podcast pitch, not to be confused with an elevator pitch or even the two-two pitch, is simply this: To help celebrate our 90th anniversary (official DOB is July 3, 1936) we are holding a vote. Call it a practice run. I have listed all 90 films HERE that have won Best Picture from 1936 - 2025 and YOU get to vote for the top three that you feel would best represent the films you’d like to see and share for FREE on July 25 & 26. No strings, no gimmicks, no bait ’n switch, no fine print and no bull. PICK THREE & WATCH FREE.  It’s a summer Sunday today as I write and we’ve got a pair of tantalizing docs to screen for your consideration. Come out and see for yourself the power of art. Positive flip side to the art of power. Peace brothers and sisters. It is the way. How could I dance with another? Ciao.
