COMMENTARY.

Whew, changes galore in the gravitational pull of the Hollywood business machine, where, as you might expect, nothing - not loyalty, not longevity, not history and certainly not logic or accountability, matter more than the BOR. The Box Office Report. I will promise you this, once we get the green light for the 501, a hard rain is gonna fall. But, until then, and with apologies…. Welcome to the July 7 UPDATE of COMING ATTRACTIONS.

TRAINSPOTTING. Looking forward to watching tonight on Senior Tuesday along with all my over sixty pals, those who watched this Danny Boyle gut buster on its initial release some thirty years ago. Reason being, that I still have no idea what half the dialogue is about (although I can guess) because we screen every Tuesday with open captions and I can read what the ear/brain combo cannot decipher. Problem solved.

PETER ASHER: EVERYWHERE MAN. A comfortable and pleasant romp thru my favorite decade of Rock n Roll; 1965 -1975. Peter, being 1/2 of Peter & Gordon, who had a couple of monster hits, partly due to their talent and party because Paul McCartney was writing their sonnets because he was dating PA’s sister Jane. The plot quickly thickens as a who’s who of rock pioneers and musical invaders from England instantly terrify the parents of every teenager in America, all produced by Mr. Asher, aka Austin Powers. All diabolical fun in 3/4 time.

THE INVITE. Two couples share a home-cooked soufflé and learn more about each other than how to shake & bake. Seth Rogen, Penelope Cruz, Edward Norton and actor/director Olivia Wilde deliciously star from soup to nuts in this 95% at RT therapeutic gourmet laugh-fest (with social commentary for desert).

ROSE OF NEVADA. From the perspective of pure atmosphere, this is arguably the most mesmerizing film of the year thus far. (NY Times). Written and directed by Mark Jenkin, the film follows Nick (George MacKay) and Liam (Callum Turner), two hired hands off the Cornish coast who step onto the Rose of Nevada, a small languishing boat that appears out of the fog, and somehow sail back decades into the past. Indi and experimental RoN is Drama, Fantasy, Horror, Mystery, Sci-Fi all in less than two hours.

SWEET HOME ALABAMA. Kerry Roe has stepped up to sponsor a series of films designed around revisiting Rom-Coms, with the REECE WITHERSPOON classic as the lead. Festivities start across the street at Marketplace and finish here with a 7pm start time. Tickets here.

THE ODYSSEY. Christopher Nolan assembles an all-star cast (to great debate) in the 7,000th remake of the Homer Greek Tragedy. I will fess up and say that while I am a huge Nolan fan, I am genuinely nonplussed by this choice of subject matter. I would rather see Memento II. Your actual opinion may certainly vary, that being, of course, a good thing, this being a text book ‘prove me wrong’ film. And I hope I am. Please note that THE ODYSSEY is in confirmation limbo as we negotiate terms with Universal Studios. This is one of the compelling reasons why 501 counters the corporate greed in the velocity of BOR cash flow. This film will gross hundreds of millions while we vend luke-warm popcorn at $8 a bag just to keep the lights on. Bad juju Uni. Still we persist.

Our 90th Anniversary Celebration is on the 25th and 26th. Ballots are everywhere, all you do is vote for your favorite three Best Picture Award Winners spanning the 90 years from 1936 - the present, and the one’s getting the most love, see the screen, FREE. That’s right, PICK THREE AND WATCH FOR FREE. I will announce the winners on the July 20 podcast so you can make your plans.

STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER. Sponsored by the INDIPINO COMMUNITY OF BAINBRIDGE AND VICINITY, and produced by GINA CORPUZ and edited by RON STEWART, the short film subtitled, ’Stories of the Picker’s Cabins’ shines the sometimes harsh light on the plight of Japanese, Indigenous and Filipino farm workers, many of them the former owners of hundreds of acres of prime BI farmland. Historical, Educational and Local. The early 1940’s were not particularly friendly with citizens that didn’t resemble Jimmy Stewart or Rita Heyworth, contributing, infuriatingly, to once popular slogan, Nidoto Noi Yani being in vogue once again this very day. Come see, July 26 @ 2.

Hats off to everyone who celebrated what remains of our Democracy over the weekend. Despite our challenges with ice, popcorn and projection equipment, we made it through, once again defeating the ‘none the worse for wear’ chorus. Looking forward to our Directors Series Sun & Mon with MICHAEL SHOOB of ROAD TO EVERYWHERE. If you are interested in how all this movie magic is produced, Michael has some stories to tell. Lastly today, should YOU have a story to tell, a request for a film, an idea for an event, money to burn or time to spend, let us know. Talk to me. 206.451.4336 guarantees your voice in my ear. And in answer to the question I have been hearing a lot lately, YES, we are looking to hire an exceptionally gifted, motivated and mature (over 21) part-time lover of movies and thankless manual labor. With a masters in English Lit, of course. Film degrees help as well, but are not required for managerial positions. As TJ used to say, we call it Community Service. No perks, no bennies, no weekends or holidays off. Sound like fun? Call our HR Dept at the number above. Operators are sitting around ramming Milk Duds and watching B&W Best Picture films from the 40’s.

And thank you Major Jason Watson, well played sir. Ciao,

Kevin
