Shifting The Perspective Of Racial Equity with Ruth Shaber
Jul 24, 2023 Season 2 Episode 8

Welcome to Episode 8 of the 2nd season of The R.A.C.E. Podcast. Today’s episode is a continuation of our Race, Healing, & Joy Series. During this series, I will engage Reproductive Justice leaders to spotlight KHA's Race, Healing & Joy initiative and share preliminary insights gathered through more than 40 conversations (including interviews, circles of accountability, and an in-person convening).

I am excited to welcome Dr. Ruth Shaber, Founder and President of the Tara Health Foundation as our guest.

Meet Dr. Ruth Shaber:

Dr. Ruth Shaber created the Tara Health Foundation in 2014 after more than two decades working on the frontlines of women’s health care. After founding the Women’s Health Research Institute at Kaiser Permanente, she committed to building a foundation that would apply the principles of evidence-based medicine and science to philanthropy.

Prior to founding Tara Health, Dr. Shaber read Impact Investing: Transforming How We Make Money While Making a Difference for, which inspired her to deploy the full potential of the foundation’s philanthropic capital, committing 100% of its assets to its core mission of identifying and supporting innovative solutions that improve the health and well-being of women and girls.

This commitment means all of Tara Health’s investments -- including grants, public equities and private equities -- are aligned with our mission. The foundation is dedicated to furthering the health and well-being of women in the United States.

Listen in as Ruth shares:

  • How her identity as a Physician has informed her work and philanthropic efforts
  • The shifts that the Tara Health Foundation has undergone in terms of racial equity and better serving the community.
  • How she "bounces back" when she "gets it wrong".
  • The people that ground and inspire her every day
  • What she wants people to think, feel, or know as they go deeper into their commitment of Racial Equity and Philanthropy
