Speaker 1:

Hello, welcome to this another edition of Worship and the Word of God. Thank you all so much for joining us as we begin to journey through the Gospels, where we will delve into the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. You know each of the four Gospel writers Matthew, mark, luke and John presents a unique perspective of Jesus Christ and his person. Matthew portrays Jesus as the Messiah, the King of the Jews, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies. Mark presents Jesus as the suffering servant, focusing on his actions and service, while Luke highlights Jesus as the Son of man, emphasizing his humanity and compassion. Not only that, but John describes Jesus as the and presents him in every way as the Son of God, the eternal Son of God, the co-eternal, the coexisting Son of God, equal to God in every way, emphasizing his divinity and eternal nature. But as we begin our study in the Gospel of Matthew, we will embark on a verse-by-verse, chapter-by-chapter, book-by-book exploration of the four gospels in order to grow, as the Word of God commands us to grow, in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, jesus Christ, especially. Savior jesus christ especially, and I mean especially, as we see the day of his return drawing ever nearer. Every second that passes, every day, his return draws nearer and nearer to us and our hearts begin to see this and know this. So I believe it's significant, as we wait on his imminent return, that we look into his life, beginning here with his lineage and his birth. As we open up the study today in Matthew, chapter 1, I want to look at the key scriptures that set the stage for the entire gospel of Matthew. As far as I'm concerned, we'll look at verse one and then we'll look at verse 18 through 21. And we will look at some different things there as we go through this. But I ask you to join us, each for each broadcast, as we just take this journey. Take our time. Verse by verse, chapter by chapter, book by book, as we go through the four Gospels together, we'll see Christ, his life, his miracles, his death, his burial, his resurrection, all painted out, his whole life painted out on the pages of scripture, in one of the most beautiful verbal portraits that I have ever seen, that any eye could ever or ear could ever behold, you say. Why do you say eyes? Because if we allow the Holy Spirit to open up our hearts Holy Spirit to open up our hearts he can turn our ears into our eyes as we see the glory of our Lord and Savior, jesus Christ, poured out on the pages of scripture In the word of God.

Speaker 1:

Here we see in verse 1, gospel of Matthew, chapter 1, if you have the word of God, open up and read along with us. It says right here the book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham, the son of David and the son of Abraham. This opening verse is not just a list of names. It carries a specific purpose and it is a declaration of Jesus' identity as the long-awaited Messiah, as the promise to David from the Lord that his throne would carry on forever and be an eternal throne and there would be one that comes through his line that would rule and reign forevermore. And then you have the son of abraham. It. It pronounces the and gives confirmation to the promise that was made unto abraham that through his seed all the nations of the earth would be blessed. But by tracing Jesus' lineage through David and Abraham, matthew emphasizes his royal covenantal heritage.

Speaker 1:

This verse reassures believers, all true born-again believers, of Jesus' legitimate claim as the Messiah, the promised Messiah who would come. God with us, emmanuel, who would be named, who would be called Jesus, who will save his people from their sins. It invites us to accept Jesus' legitimate claim as the Messiah and invites unbelievers, all those who do not accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, to explore his unique and significant place in the history of mankind. You know, speaking of the incarnation, speaking toward his humanity humanity to me, that's what the first verse spoke of toward his humanity. Speaking of his humanity because we know that jesus was god and man. He was all man, he was all god, both at the same time. He had a human, human side. He knew what it was to be hungry, to be tired, to be weary, to experience pain, the things that we suffer day in and day out. But he was also divine in every way.

Speaker 1:

And that brings us to verse 18 through 21 in this chapter, when the word of God tells us here now, the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wife. When, at his mother, mary was espoused to Joseph before they came together very important she was found the child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph, her husband, being a just man and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privately, or privily, that means privately, not make a stink of it. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream saying Joseph, thou son of David. A dream saying Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto Mary. Take unto thee Mary, thy wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost, and she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins. Praise god for that, tell you. We just excuse me. We just celebrated Christmas, you know, and I say this I think it's very interesting, as we have entered into this study on the life of Jesus through the four gospels, that we understand that the celebration of the birth of Christ should not be a one time-year event.

Speaker 1:

It should be. Everything considered in the gospel of Jesus Christ should be an every second of every day celebration in the hearts of every true born-again believer. But as I've always said, the heart of the problem is the problem of the heart, because our hearts get bogged down and trampled down by the things and circumstances of this old world. This old fallen world and our old fallen nature gets in the way many times. That's why the author of hebrews, tells us to set aside those sins that so easily beset us, the weight of those sins that so easily beset us, and it calls us to take our eyes off of our lord and savior, jesus christ, and our great god and father, almighty that's above. We need to focus, we need to have our focus lasered back in upon him, and I think there's nothing more important that we can do than, as we see the day of his return approaching, then, to look at his life. Every aspect of his life is told out by the four gospel writers in the word of God, you know, but I want you to look at something here, speaking about the virgin birth of jesus christ. This speaks of the incarnation.

Speaker 1:

Incarnation is a theological word. It means the miraculous have the miraculous event of god becoming flesh and dwelling among us in the person of none other than Jesus Christ. If you recall, in the Gospel of John, chapter 1, verse 1, he says In the beginning was the Word speaking of his eternality and the Word was with God, and the Word was God speaking of his co-equality with God. You know, the Apostle Paul would tell us in Philippians, chapter 2, he thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but humbled himself and became a servant and took upon himself and I'm not quoting here, I'm going to paraphrase took upon himself the fashion. He was formed in the fashion of a man and being found in the fashion of a man, and being found in the fashion of a man was obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. So we, as we see him here, the coming flesh and dwelling amongst, we see his person as all god and all man, but we see his purpose, for he shall save his people from their sins, as Paul would tell us there in Philippians, chapter 2, he was obedient unto death, even the death of the cross revealing his purpose. So we have his person and his purpose revealed to us in the word of God.

Speaker 1:

In Joseph's day, though, as we talk about this situation, with Joseph being a just man and the betrothal to Mary, the betrothal in that day was like an engagement today, except it was a binding agreement and a lot more formal than our modern engagement. It was a legally binding contract, often arranged by the families and required a divorce to break During the betrothal period, which lasted about a year. The couple and historic scholars vary on this. Okay, I'm not speaking as if I am a scholar, I am not. I'm going to give you both sides of the opinion from different historical scholars. Some say that during the betrothal, the betrothed husband would move the betrothed wife into his father's house and he would add on a room for her, but they would be sleep separately in the house. Or some others say that they, even though they were betrothed, did not live together. But either way, the marriage was not consummated. It was not consummated until after the wedding ceremony.

Speaker 1:

Discovering that Mary was pregnant during this time would have been considered a serious, serious scandal and by Jewish law it was very serious indeed Because, if you consider as Joseph being described as a just man, he faced a difficult decision upon discovering Mary's pregnancy. According to Jewish law, he had the right to publicly disgrace her or even, at the worst, have her stoned to death for adultery. The scriptures tell us this in Deuteronomy, chapter 22, verses 23 and 24. If a damsel, if a damsel, that is, a virgin, be betrothed unto a husband and a man, find her in the city and lie with her, then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of the city and ye shall stone them with stones that they die the damsel, because she cried, not being in the city. And the man because he hath humbled his neighbor's wife, so thou shalt put away evil from among you.

Speaker 1:

Considering all this, however, joseph being a just man, meaning he was a righteous man, meaning he was right and he followed the law of moses. But even at that, and? And the prophets, and how, what a blessing it must have been when the angel pronounced this to them. But considering what the decision he had to make, he chose the merciful path, planning to divorce her quietly, to protect her dignity and possibly her life. This decision reflects Joseph's righteousness and compassion, the righteousness and compassion that we're to have to others, no matter the circumstance, loving our neighbor as we love ourselves. This is a great demonstration of that.

Speaker 1:

But consider the angel's message to Joseph in a dream, when he reassured him that Mary's child was conceived of the Holy Ghost. Can you imagine the eternal joy and hope that welled up inside of him as he was told that the child that Mary was going to bear is the actual Son of God? So you shall call his name Emmanuel. And that points us back to the fulfillment of prophecy being conceived of the Holy Ghost. Isaiah, chapter 7, verse 14. Some 700 years before Christ was born, isaiah was given this prophecy. Therefore, the Lord himself shall give you a sign. Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Emmanuel. And we know right here, if you read in verse 22 and 23 of Matthew, chapter 1, now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled, which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet saying Behold, a virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is God with us, the incarnation. I want to read that again. I want to read this scripture again. How beautiful is this? Can you imagine Joseph? It says Now the birth.

Speaker 1:

Jesus christ was on this wise when his mother, mary, was a spouse of joseph. Before they came together, she was found with child of the holy ghost. Then joseph, her husband, being a just man and not willing to put her away, put make her a public example was minded to put her away. Privily that means privately. He didn't want to make a public stink or example of her. Remember bringing shame upon her name or causing her to be stoned to death according to the law of Moses. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream saying Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary. He thought on these things. Behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream saying Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary, thy wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost, and she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins.

Speaker 1:

Folks, divine intervention, divine intervention. You know. This divine intervention confirmed Jesus's divine origin and the fulfillment of God's redemptive plan. The virgin birth of Jesus is the cornerstone of our faith. Do you understand that Every brother and sister in Christ, every true born again believer? The virgin birth is the cornerstone of our faith, signifying his divine origin and sinless nature, conceived by the Holy Ghost. Jesus was born of a virgin. Holy Ghost. Jesus was born of a virgin, ensuring that he was not tainted by the seed of man.

Speaker 1:

This miraculous verse sets Jesus apart as the unique and perfect, sinless and blemish-free Savior who came to save his people from their sin, and being the lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world. The blemish-free, sinless son of God is the only one who could have done this because he was without sin. The word of God tells us that in 2nd Corinthians, chapter 5, verse 21, I believe. It says he made him, for he made him to be sin who knew no sin. That we might be made the righteousness of God in him. He who knew no sin was made sin for us. That we might, through his death and his blood, be made the righteousness of God in him, jesus, who came to take away the sins of his people. Amen, praise God for that.

Speaker 1:

For believers, these verses that we've covered today reassure us that our faith in Jesus as the Messiah is deeply rooted in God's faithful promises throughout the history of mankind. They remind us, as we consider the Old Testament prophecies, old Testament scriptures that foreshadow Christ and his death, his burial and resurrection, even his birth. The prophecies of his birth remind us of the miraculous and divine nature of Jesus' birth, calling us to trust in God's plan and live in light of his grace and truth. For unbelievers, those of you who have not accepted Christ, the purpose of these messages is to open the eyes of your heart and mind. As we pray the Holy Spirit would bring you under his conviction as you see, the life, the birth, the life and the death, burial and resurrection and ascension of our Lord and Savior, all that he might take away our sins and your sins. We are praying for you that your eyes would be open, that this message invites all who are skeptics to explore the unique and miraculous nature of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It challenges them, I hope it challenges you to consider the historical and prophetic claims about Jesus and to recognize him.

Speaker 1:

Recognize him as you see these prophecies fulfilled. Recognize him that he is the savior of the world and it is only through him. If you recall we've said it many times Jesus said in John 14, 6, I am the way, the truth and the life. No man cometh to the Father but by me. In today's message, you have seen his person revealed. You have seen his purpose revealed. Seen his person revealed. You have seen his purpose revealed.

Speaker 1:

Now I pray that the Holy Spirit would open up the eyes of your hearts and minds. If you've never received Christ, that you would reflect on the significance of his virgin birth. And I ask you, will you please consider accepting Christ today as your Lord and Savior? Don't allow this moment to pass by. If you are being called, you're being drawn to him. Do not resist any longer. Come to him and accept him as your Lord and the tribulation period coming faster and faster. If you think there's trouble upon the earth now, you've not seen anything yet. God's judgment is coming upon the sin-filled, christ-rejecting world and I invite you today to receive Jesus Christ, emmanuel god, with us, god in the flesh, who came and it was obedient unto death, even the death of the cross, that he might pay my sin debt, your sin debt, everyone's sin debt, in full. John would tell us in his epistle. He was the propitiation, not for our sins only, but for the sins of the whole world. He was the sacrifice that satisfied God's holy law and his judgment upon the sins of mankind.
