Words From The Word Of God

Sand vs. Rock: The Ultimate Test of Faith

Evangelist Jeff Thomas Season 31 Episode 8

Send us a text

What foundation are you building your life upon? In this powerful examination of Jesus' concluding words from the Sermon on the Mount, we dive deep into Matthew 7:24-27 where Christ presents not a peaceful closing but a prophetic confrontation.

Jesus gives us a stark picture of two builders constructing on different foundations. One wisely builds on solid rock, while the other foolishly chooses shifting sand. Both face identical storms - the same rain, floods, and winds - yet only one structure remains standing when the deluge ends. The difference isn't in the quality of their visible structure but in what lies beneath.

The sand represents everything we might build upon apart from Christ: worldly pleasures masquerading as purpose, empty religion without repentance, wealth, fame, social validation, and false teaching that skirts around the cross. These foundations demand everything from us while offering only temporary stability. As we explore this metaphor, you'll discover why sand might glisten beautifully in sunlight but becomes a deathtrap when judgment rains down.

By contrast, the rock foundation - Christ himself - doesn't demand performance but offers salvation as a free gift through what we might call the "three nails of salvation": conviction of sin, genuine repentance, and faith in Christ alone. This foundation isn't established through church attendance or religious rituals but through surrender to Jesus.

Perhaps most sobering is the reality that both houses face identical storms. Your foundation's stability isn't revealed during fair weather but during life's inevitable crises and ultimately at judgment. Have you merely admired Jesus from a distance, or surrendered your life through repentance and faith? The flood will reveal everything - not what's visible, but what's rooted.

Join us for this essential message that could determine your eternal destiny. Because for someone listening today, the flood is rising, and eternity truly hangs in the balance.

John 14:6 "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
If you haven't received Jesus Christ by Faith, as your personal Lord and Savior; I strongly encourage you to do so before it is eternally too late!!!

Speaker 1:

Hello and welcome to this another edition of Word from the Word of God. Thank you all so much for joining me today. This is your host, jeff Thomas, and today we enter the final images of Matthew, chapter 7, the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 7. Today we'll be looking at verses 24 through 27, dealing with this topic. Built to collapse when sand becomes a soul's foundation. Built to collapse when sand becomes a soul's foundation. Here, in these final images of his Sermon on the Mount, jesus presents us with not a peaceful closing but a prophetic confrontation, because the question isn't did you attend or did you listen? It's this what did you build your life upon and your eternal existence upon, and will it stand when eternity floods in? This is the message that Jesus is speaking to our hearts today. In this next message of our series. Eternity Hangs in the Balance, where Jesus speaks not of appearances here, but of foundations two different foundations, two builders and two materials, but one storm. There's no difference in the severity or the frequency of the storm. It is the exact same storm. We'll notice this as we go into the scripture, so read with me if you will, we'll pick up reading. I want to drop back to verse 21 and come down to verse 27. So read with me, if you can. Again, we're, if you're just coming in to join us. We're in the gospel of Matthew, chapter 7, starting at verse 21 down through verse 27.

Speaker 1:

Jesus says here these are the final words of our Lord and Savior. In his Sermon on the Mount, which spans from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 5 to chapter 7, jesus says here Not everyone that saith unto me, lord, lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven. But he notice this that he that doeth that doeth we'll be presented with this word again here in a moment he that doeth the will of my Father, which is in heaven, many will say to me in that day Lord, lord, have we not prophesied in thy name, and in thy name have cast out devils and in thy name done many wonderful works. And then will I profess unto them I never knew you Depart from me, ye that work in equity. Therefore, whosoever and here's our text today whosoever heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man which built his rock upon excuse me, I got ahead of myself there which built his house upon a rock, and the rain descended and the floods came and the winds blew and beat upon the house and it fell, not for it was founded upon a rock. Praise God, jesus Christ, the rock, the rock of salvation. And everyone that heareth these sayings of mine and notice this, doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man which built his house upon sand and beat upon the house and it fell, and it fell, and great was the fall of it. And it fell and great was the fall of it. May the Lord bless the reading of his word to our hearts today.

Speaker 1:

Again, jesus speaks here not of appearances, not of the outside appearance of the building, not of appearances, not of the outside appearance of the building. He speaks about the two builders. He speaks about the two materials. He speaks about the two foundations, but he speaks about one storm that comes in to try them both. To try both foundations. What will the flood of eternity find beneath your faith when it comes? Will it be the foundation of the rock of Jesus Christ or will it be the sand of anything else? Let's look at it here.

Speaker 1:

Jesus says that whosoever heareth these sayings it just doesn't stop there Whosoever heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them, jesus doesn't say whosoever feels inspired when they hear my words, or whosoosoever feels good, or whosoever feels a little bit of emotion, no. Or he didn't say whosoever repost this sermon of mine on social media or some other outlet. No, he didn't say any of that. He says whosoever heareth my words and doeth them. As we look at the transliteration of the two words heareth and doeth, heareth means to receive, not just sound, but to understand and have accountability for what we take in and understand. Doeth means to, and it carries in the, and it's presented to us here in the present, present active tense, meaning consistency. It's a consistent movement. It's a continuing action. Since it's in the present tense, it's a continuing action. It's consistent obedience, not occasional acts. He responds to it in repentance and obedience, and we know that's the way to establish ourselves upon the rock of Jesus Christ is repentance and faith and then obedience unto the word of God. That's how we build upon that foundation.

Speaker 1:

James would tell us in his epistle, in chapter 1, verse 22,. Be ye doers of the word and not just hearers, only deceiving your own selves. But the foolish man here, he hears and does nothing. Jesus tells us in verse 26, he that heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them, not he that heareth these sayings mine and doeth them not. He that heareth these sayings and doeth them not.

Speaker 1:

Notice the two different ways here. One hears and does. One heareth and does not. This man builds anyway, even though he doesn't follow what the Lord is saying. He builds anyway with any other material, with any other way that can be other than the right way, but what he builds is unstable, self-assured and eternally bankrupt. But we know, when it comes to salvation, there is one way of salvation. There is one word, there is one truth. There is one way, and his name is Jesus Christ. Let's contrast the two here.

Speaker 1:

Let's put it plainly the wise man builds on the rock Christ himself. He repented, he surrendered, he trusted the blood and he anchors in doing so. He anchors his soul in Scripture, in the word of God. Jesus said he so ever heareth my words. Whosoever heareth my words and doeth them and doeth them. So he has died to self and he has heard the word of the Lord. He has taken it, he has understood it. It just didn't come in one ear and go out the other. He has taken it into his heart and he has surrendered to it. By doing it, he surrendered to it and he's trusting what the Lord is telling him is true. So he is placing his faith in what the Lord says and he's anchoring his soul in the truth, not emotion.

Speaker 1:

The foolish man here builds on sand. So what is sand considering in worldly view? Let's look at it. Sand is worldly pleasure dressed as purpose. Sand is empty religion without repentance. Sand is money, fame, social validation, social acceptance in this world, and also sand is false preaching, with no cross, no brokenness and no new birth. But there's something about the sand. Sand demands everything of you and costs you everything, and then it collapses beneath your feet because Jesus is speaking of eternity here. He's speaking of eternity here, if you remember. Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are they that mourn? So they become. They mourn over their condition, so they die to self. The man building upon the foundation of sand doesn't die to self. He does not listen. He, he listens, but he doesn't do. He doesn't follow the instruction, he doesn't surrender himself. Therefore, he depends upon himself, his strength, his ability, his determination and his resources to build upon a foundation of that cost him everything. Do you realize that the sand of the world, the sand of false religiosity, will do nothing but collapse in the end, and it will cost you everything. And hear me, the sand will smile at you in the sunlight, but it will swallow you up when judgment reigns. Follow you up when judgment reigns.

Speaker 1:

The word of God tells us for the wages of sin, let's see this. It says Romans 6, 23,. The first part says for the wages of sin is death. And not only that, but John 3, 36 says he that believeth on the son hath everlasting life, and he that believeth not the sun shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him. The wages of sand is your physical life and eternal damnation.

Speaker 1:

My friend, the rock doesn't demand performance. If you notice, it offers salvation. If you know anything about the grace of God and his love and his mercy in Christ Jesus, you know the rock doesn't demand performance, it offers salvation and it costs nothing, for it's all of grace. You see, because there's a second part to Romans 6, 23,. You know, the wages of sin is death, is the first part. But the second part, the part B of that verse, the latter part of that verse, says but the gift of God, notice, it's a gift. It's not something that can be earned, it's not something that can be purchased. There is no way to attain it, because it is given freely. It is given to the unworthy. That is what grace means. It's unmerited favor, it's undeserved favor from God in Christ Jesus, our Lord, for the grace of God is eternal life through who? Jesus Christ, our Lord. The rock demands not performance, but it offers salvation and it costs nothing, for it is a free gift. The word of God tells us in Ephesians 2, verse 8 and 9, it offers salvation and it costs nothing for it is a free gift. The word of God tells us in Ephesians, chapter 2, verse 8 and 9, for by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift. There's that word again the gift of God, that phrase gift of God. It is the gift of God, not of works, verse 9, not a worse, lest any man should boast.

Speaker 1:

Ephesians 1, 27 tells us in whom we have redemption. Redemption means that there was a price paid to make a purchase and this price that was paid was the blood of Jesus. Because it says right here in Ephesians 1, 7, in whom, and he's Paul, the apostle Paul, writing here to the Ephesians and speaking of none other than Christ, if you go back to verse 3 and verse 4, which says we were chosen in him before the foundation of the world. But it goes on here in verse 7 to say In whom we have redemption. We've been purchased off the slave market to sin, at no cost of our own, but the high cost of his blood. Through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.

Speaker 1:

First, peter, 3, 5, 3 through five, says blessed be the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ which, according to his what Abundant mercy, mercy's free. It doesn't cost anything, but it's abundant Hath begotten us again unto a lively, a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. It cost him his life, if you notice the contrast there. Sand cost you your life, the rock cost him his life. The rock gives you an eternal life by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Verse 4 of 1 Peter, chapter 1, to an inheritance Listen to what we gain from this To an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled that fatheth not a way reserved in heaven for you who are kept by the power of God. Through what faith unto what salvation ready to be revealed in the last time, salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. The foundation of the rock is a laid with personality. It's laid by conversion.

Speaker 1:

And for conversion to take place there must be three nails of salvation. The first is conviction. You realize your sin separates you from God. The word of God tells us in John, chapter 16, verse 8, he this is Jesus speaking of the Holy Spirit. He says when he comes he will reprove the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment. But he says he will reprove the world of sin. That's conviction. He will convict the world of their sin. He will convict the world of righteousness there is no righteousness in ourselves and he will convict us of judgment because we know in our sin, if we die in our sin, we will do nothing but die and go to hell and be cast into the lake of fire for an eternity.

Speaker 1:

But it also says in Acts, chapter 2, verse 37, that this is after Peter preached there at the day of Pentecost. He was filled with the Holy Spirit and he preached that day and over 3, 000 men were saved. But it says they were pricked in their heart and they said what, brother and men, brother, brethren and men, what shall we do? And they said repent and be saved. Says repent and be therefore converted act. Chapter 3, verse 19, tells us that repent ye, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out when the times of refreshing shall come from the lord. That's repentance, isaiah.

Speaker 1:

Chapter 55, verse 7, tells us, looking back at the Old Testament, isaiah's prophecy seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near. God tells us the Lord, jehovah, god, jehovah, god tells us, let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts, and let him return unto the Lord and he will have mercy upon him. There's that free gift again, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon, free pardon, free grace, free love, free mercy. How can you beat that? But that's the second nail repentance.

Speaker 1:

The third nail is faith. You must trust in Jesus alone for salvation. But as many as received him John chapter 1, verse 12, says but as many as received him, speaking of Christ, those receiving Christ through faith, that's faith. That's faith, and also faith is given to us. If you didn't know that, look at Acts, chapter 3 and 4, and it tells us there. When the lame barrier was healed, after being lame and laid at the temple there, gave the temple there for 40 years of his life. He was healed. And he was healed by the faith that he had that was given unto him. But acts, chapter 16, verse 33 excuse me, verse 31 tells us believe on the lord jesus christ and thou shalt be saved.

Speaker 1:

E Ephesians, chapter 2, verse 8 and 9 again for by grace are you saved, through what Faith? And that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God. I love that. Notice how that keeps recurring here. The gift of God. It costs you nothing, but it costs Christ everything. It cost the Lord, god. It cost God the Father the price of the life of his Son. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish. But we're back to Ephesians 2, 8, and 9. For by grace are you saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God verse 9 not of works, lest any man should boast. Salvation is not the sand of effort, it's in the rock of grace, christ Jesus, our Lord. Praise God for that.

Speaker 1:

Let me speak to both hearts, listening today the self-righteous and the lost soul. To the self-righteous, you've built on sermons, you've built on church attendance, you've built on systems of denomination but you've never received the Savior. But you've never received the Savior. If that's you and you've gone to church your whole life and you think that membership or that attendance is going to get you into heaven, or if you think anything but giving your heart and life and repentance to the Lord and accepting him and having a personal relationship with him, if you're building upon any other empty religiosity, you are building upon sand. You've done all that but you've never received the Savior. You say Lord but have never obeyed the Lord, you've never repented, you never accepted him by faith. That means you haven't suffered the three nails, you haven't been fallen under conviction, you haven't repented and you haven't placed your faith in him To the lost soul buried in world values. You've built upon the wealth of the world. You've built upon seeking the approval of the world. You built upon worldly pleasure. You built upon monetary gain. You built upon momentary monetary things. You built upon survival in our society, but none of it can hold you when the flood of eternity comes. It can hold you. When the flood of eternity comes, when the storm of eternity blows in and beats upon that foundation, you will find yourself collapsing and it will cost you your life the word.

Speaker 1:

There's an old saying born once, die twice physically and spiritually. But the other side of that coin is born twice, die once. You're born physically and then you're born again in Christ by receiving him as your Lord and Savior. Born once, die twice. Born twice, die once. Friend, the storm isn't symbolic here. Jesus isn't just telling us of a symbolic storm. He's telling us of a real storm. It's real, eternity is real, and you should know that Eternity is real.

Speaker 1:

Your foundation, your very foundation to either party, your foundation, your very foundation to either party that I just spoke to the self-righteous or the lost soul your foundation is being tested right now. What if you died right now, this very moment, without Christ? You would be hurled out into eternity to suffer the flames of hell and then be cast one day into the lake of fire from the great white throne judgment when your name is not found written in the book of life, the Lamb's book of life. That's what awaits you now. Or, on the other hand, what if the rapture was to happen this very moment? Before I finish saying amen at the end of this sermon, what? What if it? What if it all goes away right now? You'll be left behind to suffer the tribulation period. And if you make it through that, then you'll go to the great white throne judgment, where you're judged for your every work that you've done. It's not covered under the blood of Christ. And then, by the absence of your name in the last book of life, you're cast into the lake of fire, which is the second death, which is eternal separation from God.

Speaker 1:

That's what building upon the sand of the world and building upon the sand of empty religiosity will get you. It will cost you everything, but the rock to build upon the rock of Jesus Christ costs nothing. It is a gift of God. By his grace, his unmerited, his undeserved favor, you can come and partake of the water of life freely, undeservedly, undeservedly. He calls again and again and again come and take of the water of life freely, undeservedly. If you've built on anything but Jesus, now is the moment to tear it down. Don't patch it up, don't decorate it or dress it up. Demolish it completely. Let the rock of ages lay the cornerstone of your salvation and be the foundation of your eternity.

Speaker 1:

Pray with me right now, and I'm not saying a simple prayer. Sinner's prayer will save you, but if you mean it from your heart, if you mean it in repentance. You've been convicted in this message and you want to repent of your sin and you want to place your faith in him. Pray with me now from the realness of your heart. Lord Jesus, I'm built on sin, on false religion, on worldly pleasure, on shallow emotion. Lord, I repent now of my sin and I surrender to you. You are the risen son of God and I ask you to wash me, save me and anchor me in the truth. Let your word become a foundation in your spirit, my strength. I trust you and I receive you as my Lord and Savior and I will obey you In your holy name. I pray Amen. The flood will reveal everything, my friend, not what's visible but what's rooted. So ask yourself, as we close Did I obey Jesus or just admire him?

Speaker 1:

Did I surrender today or just sing his praises? Did I repent or did I pretend? You may fool me. You may fool someone else, but you cannot fool God. He knows the hearts and he tries the reins of every heart, but the Lord is good beyond measure. He has offered his free gift of grace, jesus Christ, his only son. He gave his only son to a lost and dying world that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Speaker 1:

Friend, it's very important to understand your answer to these questions today. Did I obey or just admire him? Did I surrender or just sing his praises? Did I repent or did I pretend? Because at the end of time the question won't be did you go to church? It'll be. Did you build upon me? This is Jeff Thomas, your host. Keep preaching, keep building, keep surrendering, because for someone listening, the flood is rising and eternity hangs in the balance. Thank you so much for joining us today and I look forward to the next time that we can join and share a word from the word of God. God bless you all.
