Psalm 143
A psalm of David.
1 Lord, hear my prayer,
listen to my cry for mercy;
in your faithfulness and righteousness
come to my relief.
- A Psalm of David
o A Psalm is a song (it’s meant to be remembered and sang)
o David means beloved
o This song should be sang by all of God’s people (His beloved)
- Lord hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy
o We all want God to hear our prayers
o All we need to do is ask Him
o Listen to the my cry for mercy
§ To hear is to get ones attention
§ To listen is to contemplate what they are saying
§ This is what it was about (MERCY)
· Not getting what he deserved (not getting what we deserve)
o When was the last time you asked for mercy?
§ This will require that you admin your sins
§ Ask for forgiveness
§ And then mercy
- In your faithfulness and righteousness come to my relief
o In you faithfulness
§ It because of God’s faithfulness this possible
§ Not ours
o And righteousness
§ Jesus was righteous because He never sinned
§ We can become righteous by faith in his death and resurrection alone
o Come to my relief
§ God will come to your relief
§ He will relieve you of your sin & guilt
2 Do not bring your servant into judgment,
for no one living is righteous before you.
- David does not want to be brought into judgment
o It’s a court case
o Evidence will be presented
o He will be deemed guilty and he knows it
- For no one living is righteous before you
o What a statement
o No one living is righteous (not one)
o Righteousness is possible in the flesh (only by the spirit of God)
§ Only by trusting in Jesus Christ unto salvation
§ His works, His track record; not ours
3 The enemy pursues me,
he crushes me to the ground;
he makes me dwell in the darkness
like those long dead.
- The enemy pursues me, he crushes me to the ground
o Who is your enemy?
o Who does this? The devil comes to steal, kill & destroy)
o He makes you feel crushed and hopeless
- He makes me dwell in the darkness like those long dead
o The devil wants you to live in darkness where there is no light
o Under cover of darkness is where most sin happens (at night)
o Yet God sees just as well in the night as day
o God is light and His word is a lamp unto our feet
§ So we can see the truth and walk on the correct path
§ Avoiding all the traps sets by the devil and his followers
