Matthew 14 - John the Baptist Beheaded

14 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus, 2 and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

-          At that time

o   What time was this?

o   After Jesus spoke in parables

§  Of the seed which fell (importance of soil)

§  Of the wheat and the tares (importance to know our enemy)

§  Of the mustard seed (faith becomes bigger than life)

§  Of the leaven in in the bread (sin is present even in the church)

§  Of the hidden treasure in the field (heaven is worth more than RE)

§  Of the costly pearl (heaven is worth more than jewels)

§  Of the dragnet (heave is more important than work)

o   After Jesus did not do many miracles in His home town

§  Because of their unbelief (unbelief is a mirical-killer)

-          Herod the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus

o   Notice He heard about Jesus and was likely thinking about it

-          And said to his servants

o   This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead

o   That is why miraculous powers are at work in him

o   Notice these comments seem to come from a place of fear

3 For when Herod had John arrested, he bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. 4 For John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” 5 Although Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they regarded John as a prophet.

-          Herod had John arrested and put in prison

-          Because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip

-          Herod wanted his brothers wife and John had told him that it was not kosher

-          So Herod wanted to put him to death but he feared the crowd which regarded John as a prophet (notice he makes decisions out of fear and lust)

6 But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod, 7 so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.

-          It seems Herod is a bit of pervert. Now he is lusting after Herodias’s daughter

-          She please him so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked

-          This is a clear sign of his inappropriate behavior and thoughts

8 Having been prompted by her mother, she *said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 9 Although he was grieved, the king commanded it to be given because of his oaths, and because of his dinner guests.
