Romans Chapter 4 - Justification by Faith Evidenced in Old Testament

4 What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” 4 Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. 5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, 6 just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds have been forgiven,
 And whose sins have been covered.
 8 “Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account.”

What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? Paul reaches back to the story of Abraham because in chapter 3 we learned that no flesh shall be justified by the law. We learned that justification “declared not guilty” is a result of faith in Jesus Christ not of works lest anyone should boast.  So what shall we say then about Abraham?

Here is the answer “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness”. It’s the same way we get saved.  We believe God and its gets credited to us as righteousness.

-          Now to one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but what is due

-          But to the one who does work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith in credited as righteousness

-          Just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works

-          Blessed is the man whose sin in has been covered (covered in the blood)

-          Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account (because it was paid for)

So Paul concludes, it is a gift and not payment for work.  All other religions are trying to work to get into heaven hoping their good works are enough to get them in.  Some try to count their good deeds vs. their sins and stive to make sure their good deeds outnumber their sin.  This simply doesn’t work. We can never be good enough even with our best effort.

Isa 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

It is by faith in Jesus Christ that we become righteous. It is a gift of God.  It is unearned, undeserved favor from a loving Father.  We simply put our faith in Jesus Christ as the one who will justify us.  Thank you Lord !!!

 

9 Is this blessing then on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say, “Faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness.” 10 How then was it credited? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised; 11 and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them, 12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised.

Is this blessing then on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also?
