John, Chapter 18 - Judas betrays Jesus

18 When Jesus had spoken these words, He went away with His disciples across the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden which He entered with His disciples. 2 Now Judas, who was betraying Him, also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples. 3 So Judas, having obtained the Roman cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, *came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

-          When Jesus had spoken these things (what things? Jesus made the name of God known to man and He would continue to make it known so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them)

-          He went away with His disciples across the ravine of the Kidron (this ravine is a small creek connected to the temple which would be full of blood from the sacrifice of the lambs at this time; a stark reminder of what Christ would have to face; Kidron means dark and this would be a dark time for Jesus who would suffer and die for our sins and the sun would go dark for 3 hours in the middle of the day)

-          Now Judas (which means Let Him Be Praised) , who was betraying Him, also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples (Jesus wasn’t hiding, He was out in the open in the same place He often went)

o   Here is the picture of this paragraph

§  Jesus said He was going back to God to be glorified again

§  Jesus said he shared God’s name with Man and some believed.

§  Jesus petitioned the Father that those who believed would be with Jesus and be able to see His glory which He had before the foundation of the world.

§  So now Jesus gets up went away to cross the ravine of the Kidron (blood flowing in dark place)

§  So Judas (Let Him be Praised; literally for what He was about to do

§  In other words we would later “Praise Jesus for paying for all sin”.

-          So Judas, having obtained the Roman cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees (a Roman cohort would be about 480 soldiers + officers from the chief priest would be their chief security officers and the Pharisees which were the law makers; this is like sending an entire army battalion)

-          Came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons (it seems they expected a big fight)

4 Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, came out into the open and *said to them, “Whom are you seeking?” 5 They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He *said to them, “I am He.”

-          Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him (He knew in advance)

-          Came out into the open (He didn’t run or hide; he went right up to man’s army)

-          And then Jesus asked the question “Whom are you seeking”  (this is the same question today – what or Whom are You seeking?)

-          And they answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene” (they should have been seeking Him to be saved but they were seeking Him to arrest Him)

And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. 6 Now then, when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 He then asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” 8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am He; so if you are seeking Me, let these men go on their way.”
