John, Chapter 19 - The Crown of Thorns

19 So Pilate then took Jesus and had Him flogged. 2 And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and placed it on His head, and put a purple cloak on Him; 3 and they repeatedly came up to Him and said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and slapped Him in the face again and again.

-          Pilate then took Jesus (actually Jesus went with him willingly)

-          And Him flogged (brutal whipping with leather and bone, very painful)

-          And soldiers put a crown of thorns on His head (this would also heart and cause blood flow)

-          And put a purple cloak on Him (purple was for royalty; the cloak covered His eyes so He could not see who hit Him or what direction the blows were coming from; mentally and physically anguishing)

-          Just think, He could have changed His mind between slaps and called down a legion of Angels but He took this physical and mental torture for us

4 And then Pilate came out again and *said to them, “See, I am bringing Him out to you so that you will know that I find no grounds at all for charges in His case.” 5 Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate *said to them, “Behold, the Man!”

-          Pilate came out again and said “See I am bringing Him out to you so that you know that I find no grounds at all for charges in His case” – what an amazing admission – Not Guilty

-          Jesus then came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe (true royalty in pain and suffering to pay for our sins)

-          Pilate said “Behold the Man!” it was almost like he was giving the Jews what they wanted

-          Pilate was hoping that the flogging and beating and the crown was enough

6 So when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they shouted, saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate *said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him; for I find no grounds for charges in His case!” 7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by that law He ought to die, because He made Himself out to be the Son of God!”

-          When the chief priests and officers saw Him, they shouted “Crucify, crucify” (as awful as this was, it had to be because it was God’s plan which He foretold must happen)

-          Pilate said “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no grounds for charges in His case! (Pilate wanted nothing to do with the crucifixion of Jesus but He also didn’t stop them)

-          The Jews discuss the law that Jesus should die because He made Himself out to be the Son of God!  (And do He was, and so they should have known Him, the Tora spoke about Him clearly; interesting the Word said that the Messiah must die like this)

8 Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid; 9 and he entered the Praetorium again and *said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate *said to Him, “Are you not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?”

-          Jesus tells Pilate he would have no authority over Jesus unless God allowed it (which the only reason He did was to redeem mankind for all his sins)
