John, Chapter 21
21 After these things Jesus revealed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and He revealed Himself in this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas who was called Didymus, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter *said to them, “I am going fishing.” They *said to him, “We are also coming with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing.
- After these things (what things? Jesus joined the his disciples twice, doubting Thomas missed his first visit like the Jews; but Jesus came a second time and showed Thomas the holes in His hands and His side and Thomas touched the holes and believed (born again) by believing in the risen Lord as Thomas confessed “My Lord and My God”).
- Jesus revealed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias (meaning “naval”, the center of Israel and religious study)
- And He revealed Himself in this way
o Simon Peter (He who listens, the rock)
o Thomas who was called Didymus (Twin, a double)
o Nathanael of Cana in Galilee
§ Nathaniel = God has given or Gift of God
§ Cana = beloved daughter
§ Galilee = to encircle
o The sons of Zebedee (endowed by God; Yahweh has bestowed; Sons of Thunder)
§ Endowed means to given or bequeath by will, leave a gift
o And two other disciples were together (two is number for witnesses)
- Simon Peter, said to them, I am going fishing (he who listens, the rock)
o They said to him, “We are also coming with you”
o They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing
- Here is the meaning of the names:
- He who listens to the rock, is a twin a Gift from God, beloved daughter to encircle endowed by God who bequeathed a gift two disciples who listen and get in the boat but caught nothing that night
- Here is the meaning
o He who listens as has a spiritual twin, a gift from God
o Like a beloved daughter, a young bride encircled by the love of her father
o Gets an endowment a gift for the future security of marriage of two
o Who listen and get in the boat with God
o But caught nothing that night (for they waited for the dawning of a new day)
4 But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 So Jesus *said to them, “Children, you do not have any fish to eat, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” 6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you will find the fish.” So they cast it, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great quantity of fish.
- But when the day was now breaking (the sun comes up)
o A picture of Jesus risen from the dead (out of darkness to light)
