1 John 1 - The Incarnate Word

1 What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life— 2 and the life was revealed, and we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was revealed to us— 3 what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. 4 These things we write, so that our joy may be made complete.

-          This book is anonymous, so we don’t know for sure if John wrote it

-          However, it follows the same style as 2 John and 3 John and John so it is likely written by John but which one?

o   Could be John the son of Zebedee (the disciple Jesus Loved – John 21:20-24)

o   Could be John The Elder

o   Either way he is older and in charge of house-churches (primarily Jewish Christians

o   There was a crisis as a group of them broke off and left the church and denied Jesus as Messiah and Son of God (1 John 2:18-13)

o   They were stirring up hostility to those who stay faithful to the teaching of Grace

o   False teachers and liars also stir up hostility towards those who speak truth

-          What was from the beginning (this is story that will start from the beginning so you can get the entire picture)

-          What we have heard (they were taught verbally and heard the word; faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God; if we don’t speak God’s Word then no one hears it)

-          What we have seen with our eyes (things they saw in person, 1st hand knowledge)

-          What we have looked at and touched with our hands (the Lord Jesus Christ Himself)

-          Concerning the Word of Life (notice capital letters); this is what the story is about

o   And the life was revealed (unmasked by God)

o   And we have seen and testify (stating the facts under oath)

o   And proclaim to you (announce to you; blow the trumpets)

o   The eternal life which was with the Father and was revealed to us (His Origin)

o   What we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also (declaring truth)

§  That you too may have fellowship with us (to take-part in this good news)

§  Indeed (for-a-truth) our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ (this is who they have fellowship with and with whom you may also if you believe the Word of Life – Jesus Christ)

o   These things we write, so that our joy may be made complete

§  Completed when you believe and receive these truths; you become born again; you secure reserve seating in heaven; rewards are given those who planted the seed; rewards are given out by God

§  So that you too gain fellowship with God the Father and Jesus Christ His Son (this is the purpose of this letter; it also our life’s purpose)

o   Does He know you!
