In World News…

Syrian rebels, led by Islamist group HTS, have destroyed the tomb of former president Hafez al-Assad, ending the Assad family’s 54-year rule. Statues and posters of the Assads were also removed. Bashar al-Assad escaped to Russia after losing control, sparking celebrations among Syrians who remember the civil war caused by his violent crackdown on the 2011 protests. The war killed over 500,000 and displaced millions. HTS and its allies, including the Free Syrian Army, now control Damascus and have formed a transitional government under Mohammed al-Bashir. Global leaders, including the U.S., support efforts for an inclusive and tolerant new government.

Business News

Coffee prices have soared to record highs, with Arabica beans increasing by 80% this year to $3.44 per pound, and Robusta prices also increasing. Bad weather in Brazil and Vietnam, the top coffee producers, has severely affected crops, leading to low global supplies. Major brands like Nestlé and Lavazza, which had previously absorbed cost increases, are now planning price rises or reducing pack sizes. Brazil’s worst drought in 70 years, followed by heavy rains, and Vietnam’s extreme weather have made the situation worse. As coffee demand grows, especially in China, analysts expect prices to stay high, leaving consumers preparing for rising costs.

Entertainment

Wildfires have forced thousands, including celebrities, to evacuate Malibu. The Franklin Fire, which started last Monday, has burned over 3,000 acres and destroyed several homes. Despite firefighting efforts, the blaze is still not contained. The fire, fuelled by strong winds, has affected schools, roads, and power in the area. Celebrities like Cher and Dick Van Dyke were forced to leave, with Van Dyke leaving behind a missing cat. Firefighters are battling the flames near Pepperdine University. Officials warn that extreme weather conditions are making wildfires more dangerous, with climate change and land management playing key roles in worsening the situation.

Sport

The 2034 men’s World Cup will be held in Saudi Arabia, with plans for 11 new stadiums, including one in the futuristic city of Neom. Saudi officials promise an extraordinary football experience but face criticism over human rights concerns and accusations of using sports to improve their global image. Since 2021, Saudi Arabia has invested billions in sports, attracting events, stars like Ronaldo, and the LIV golf series. Cultural challenges remain, including criminalised same-sex relations and alcohol bans, while long distances between cities will require polluting air travel. The 48-team tournament highlights Saudi Arabia’s ambitions despite ongoing controversies.

Self-development

Christmas can become stressful, but a few simple strategies can help bring back the joy and magic of the season.

·       First, focus on what truly matters to you. The pressure to do more, buy more, or decorate more can be overwhelming. Instead of chasing perfection, decide what feels meaningful. Whether it’s slowing down with family or delegating tasks, don’t let outside expectations dictate your holiday.

·       Next, reduce activities that bring stress. If certain traditions like hosting, cooking, or elaborate gift-giving feel too much, cut back. Discuss alternatives, such as Secret Santa or setting smaller budgets. Simplify cooking by choosing easier recipes or sharing responsibilities.

·       Make a list of enjoyable activities, like festive movies, books, or treats you would like to try. This keeps the season focused on fun rather than responsibilities.

·       Finally, let go of the need for perfection. Your Christmas tree, desserts, or decorations don’t have to be perfect. Embracing imperfections allows you to enjoy the real spirit of the holiday.

Choose what works for you, and savour a stress-free, meaningful celebration this Christmas.

Well, that’s all from NEWS OF THE WORLD for now. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas holiday, and I’ll talk to you soon! Take care!
