Day 198 – Still Soft on the Wheel

Jeremiah 17–20
James 1

Leave a piece of clay out in the sun, and it hardens fast. Once it's set, you can't reshape it. You can only break it. That simple picture sits at the center of today's readings. Jeremiah 17 opens with two images. The one who trusts in human strength is like a bush in the wastelands. But the one who trusts in the LORD is like a tree planted by the water, with leaves that are always green. Then comes a hard truth. The heart is deceitful above all things. In chapter 18, Jeremiah watches a potter at work. The pot goes wrong, but the potter doesn't toss it. He shapes it into something new. God says, like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand. In chapter 19, Jeremiah smashes a hardened jar in front of the elders. Fired clay can't be remade. Chapter 20 shows him beaten and put in stocks, yet God's word burns like a fire shut up in his bones. James adds this. Do not merely listen to the word. Do what it says. Taken together, these readings call us to stay soft in God's hands.

Underneath it all lies a single truth. God can reshape any life that stays yielded to Him. But a heart that keeps resisting His word slowly loses the softness that makes change possible.

What might this look like in your day? Here are three simple steps.

First, think of one area where you've quietly told God, "This is settled. You can stop working on it." Name it honestly. Then ask Him today to put His hands back on it.

Second, pick one instruction from Scripture you already know but haven't been doing. Obey it in some concrete way before the day ends. James says hearing without doing is how we fool ourselves.

Third, when a trial or irritation comes today, pause before you react. Ask yourself, "What is God shaping in me through this?" Then answer honestly, even if the answer is patience you don't have yet.

Let this stay with you today. As long as you stay on the Potter's wheel, He can always reshape you. Nothing marred is beyond His hands.

Thank you for joining me today. May God give you a teachable spirit, a tender heart, and the courage to do what His Word says. Until tomorrow, stay yielded in His hands and let Him finish what He started.
