Day 202 – When Yes Means Yes

Jeremiah 37, 21, 34
Psalm 79
James 5

Most of us have made a promise in a hospital waiting room. Lord, get me through this, and I'll change. Then the scare passes, and life gets busy again. Today's readings show a king who knew that pattern well. In Jeremiah 21, with Babylon at the gates, Zedekiah hopes the Lord will perform wonders as in times past. In chapter 37, he has Jeremiah brought secretly from prison and asks, "Is there any word from the LORD?" There is. It's the same word as before. Zedekiah doesn't want guidance. He wants a different answer. Chapter 34 shows the same heart. Under siege, the leaders promise to free their Hebrew slaves, just as the law required. Then the enemy pulls back, and they take the slaves back too. Psalm 79 cries out from the ruins that followed. It asks God to forgive our sins for his name's sake. And James brings it home. Unpaid wages cry out to the Lord. All you need to say is a simple yes or no. Read side by side, these chapters show that God is watching what we do after the pressure lifts.

At the heart of these chapters is a simple idea. God doesn't measure faithfulness by the promises we make when we're desperate. He measures it by the promises we keep once the pressure is gone.

What might this look like in your day? It starts with keeping the promise you made in the storm, now that the sky has cleared.

First, think back to a recent crisis. Did you promise God or someone else anything while you were in it? Take one small, concrete step toward keeping it today.

Second, look for a debt you've been putting off. It might be a bill, a favor you promised, or credit you owe someone for their work. Settle it this week. James says withheld wages cry out, and the Lord hears them.

Third, choose one trusted friend. Confess something specific you've been hiding. Then ask them to pray for you, not just reassure you. James says that's the road to healing.

Before the day gets busy, remember this. A promise that expires when the pressure lifts was never really a promise.

Thank you for joining me today. May God give you an honest heart, a steady word, and the courage to keep every promise you've made. Until tomorrow, live what you've read and let it shape all you do.
