I'm good we have birthday weeks, not you and me personally, but our children, yes, and my mom.

Speaker 1:

Oh, that's right. Yes, and you did some celebrating over the weekend, because your niece is also the same week, right?

Speaker 2:

My niece and my son are two days apart, like same year.

Speaker 1:

Oh, we didn't really say.

Speaker 2:

Like my sister had her daughter and then two days later I had Rory. Isn't that fun. It was fun. It was kind of crazy. Like I went to bed the night before he was born. I was like I'm having the baby this weekend and Al said, you know, you might just think that because Erin had her baby, but you never know. And then, sure enough, next morning 7.30, I woke up he was born at 9.30. Well, that's how you roll, getting it done.

Speaker 1:

That's unbelievable. We had places to be.

Speaker 2:

Did you host? Yes, everybody came over on Monday. Very simple, just pizza and pasta and salad.

Speaker 1:

It was pretty fast and it was nice to have that extra day. Yeah, wasn't it? Yes, I like the extra day, but what I really like is what it does to your week.

Speaker 2:

You know what I don't like, what it does to my week? Oh, because then I feel like, shoot, it's Wednesday, feels like it should be Tuesday, like I feel like I'm missing a day, like you're rushed. I loved the day off, but then I kind of am a little bit thrown off.

Speaker 1:

We were all home this weekend, which doesn't usually happen. Wait, you can't skip over Mike's birthday. I was going to say so. We all celebrated together. Okay, good, yeah, this is a big one. Yes, he turned 16. Oh my gosh, which was so fun. And my 15, almost 15-year-old daughter asked so can he like technically kind of drive to close places Because you know he's 16.? And I said why don't you ask your driver's ed teacher that question? Because I was so disappointed in her rationale.

Speaker 2:

That it's like a birthright, like you turn six. It's not like voting, where you just get to do it.

Speaker 1:

I mean like close places. She said Close places.

Speaker 2:

Close places Like.

Speaker 1:

Indiana. Yeah, Like could we? Just that's what they want to do. They're like psyched to drive up to Long Beach and then they want to stay there for the weekend. I'm like you guys can't stay there by yourselves. So this is obviously more Elle's plan than Mike's.

Speaker 2:

I wanted to do that too.

Speaker 1:

He's not in any real hurry to get his behind the wheel hours, and that's all he's waiting for. I mean he's been driving for ages and she's real excited for him to get it. So whenever yeah, it shouldn't take him too long. He has eight hours, yeah, it shouldn't take him too long. He has eight hours, yeah. And then my mom had a birthday. We celebrated that and she's in town.

Speaker 2:

Oh fun.

Speaker 1:

And that's about it.

Birthday birthday. Alexander went to the Notre Dame game. That's fun, Did he have a blast? He had a blast. You know obviously bummed that they lost, but he went with his brother and a friend of his brother's and they had a really good time. So that was good. And you held down the fort, I held down the fort, it was all good. And then Did you see the halftime on that?

Speaker 1:

No, I did not. Oh, some famous rapper, I can't remember who, that my younger kids were excited to see, but he, but he was performing from a rooftop of a nearby building. Oh, he wasn't in the stadium.

Speaker 2:

Huh, maybe the college people couldn't afford the like set up and take. Oh because, oh well, did the bands perform.

Speaker 1:

I don't know, I just I saw him on the roof. That's scary.

Speaker 2:

I wonder if only the people at home saw that and the people at the game saw the marching band. Oh, that's funny, I don't know. The game saw the marching band. Oh that's funny, I don't know. I will ask al about that okay, please do.

Speaker 1:

Um, how's your dryer? My dryer is firing on all cylinders. Thank you to the lint lizard. Thank you too. I used a shark, which is an apparatus that you feed through the tube, to clean out any lint, because I was kind of weary on duct cleaners, because the last time we had our air ducts cleaned, I feel like it was a little bit of a.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and I don't have a reputable company. But back, wait back to Al real quick. Yeah, you said he's feeling under the weather. He's feeling under the weather. I have something that might help him Camu, camu. Camu, camu. No, actually it's sold out.

Speaker 2:

But there are these cough drops. Oh my God, are they the Progresso soup drops? Yes, that's what it is. Do you want it? No, I tried. I have the website all filled up Because they're Wait, okay. So tomorrow at 8 am they go on sale again.

Speaker 1:

Are you sure Because I think it said that they were going that they sold on January 16th. Oh, yeah, you're right, that would be tomorrow. Yeah, and did you see how they come In a can? Okay, for listeners that haven't seen these, they are Progresso soup drops. They launched on January 16th and sold out before they even landed on Instagram. But yuck, oh, they look like bullion cubes.

Speaker 2:

That's exactly what I was going to say yes, yes, but they're hard. They're the texture of hard candy, but the flavor of chicken noodle soup.

Speaker 1:

Could you imagine thinking you were reaching for like a butterscotch?

Oh baby Hit with a chicken noodle Because it would be cold. The best part of chicken noodle soup is that it's hot.

Speaker 1:

I think I'm going to try and get my hands on a bowl and then just put it on my kitchen counter because my kids can't eat it.

Speaker 2:

Okay, tomorrow at 8 am, we got to get on. Jam on it. Okay, and try to get them, because, oh, did you read this that they? Progresso recommends sucking on the drops in the carpool line during a grocery run, while folding laundry, sitting at the doctor's office or hiding out under the covers. Could you imagine if you saw someone at Mariano's and they had chicken noodle soup? If you saw someone at Mariano's?

and they had chicken noodle soup. I was just going to say all those places sound like a really great spot to listen to our podcast as well. They do, yeah. I love the packaging. It looks like it comes in a can of soup.

Speaker 2:

The packaging is brilliant and it says bursting with sweet meat, savory flavor. They featured recognizable notes of broth, chicken vegetables, noodles and even parsley, but the seasoning wasn't overpowering. Barf Soup you can suck on, I know. This is probably something we should try, though, because everything we typically try is gross.

If you are Hercule Dirkling, it might be a nice thing to have, because that's all the rage again. That's bad Herculeerkling. It might be a nice thing to have, because that's all the rage again. That's bad Herculderkling. I love to Herculderkle, so listeners that may not have caught the episode we discussed. Herculderkling it's just a fancy word that means to lounge around all day in bed. It's a Scottish word. Yeah, and some hotels are embracing it. In Williamstown, massachusetts, said they're elevating their guest experience by offering in-suite libraries to cater to folks' herkle-derkling.

Oh yeah, I feel like, well, I can't do anything else because I'm sitting in my bed. So I feel like once I get out of bed, then I got to get going.

Yeah. Oh, I'm so sorry that you can't enjoy it, and I wonder if that's why I go to bed early because I feel nervous. I feel nervous. Sleeping in makes me feel nervous. Sleeping in makes me feel like the day is getting away from me, gotcha Okay.

Yeah, oh, so you're not a hergal jerk? No, I'm not. Would you ever marinate your clothes in perfume? Have you heard about this trend?

Speaker 1:

Not unless I had a bottle of cortisone next to me. I feel like that's an allergic reaction Should you Waiting to have some.

I know you're big on trends. I am big on trends.

You keep us trending.

I don't always embrace them, but I'm big on trends, so these ladies are taking their clothing, spraying their clothing, folding it up, putting it in a Ziploc bag and then wearing it the next day.

Speaker 1:

Is that bad for the?

Speaker 2:

fabric. Well, that's what this article said in the magazine. It's like that's fine and dandy on some fabrics, but other fabrics you could really ruin it, and then some people who are perfume experts were saying it can't breathe. It can't breathe. But then also some of the scents are made to react with your skin. They're not necessarily made to react with fabric, With cotton.

Speaker 2:

So, they might smell different, and sometimes you can't get it out of the fabric then. So then you're washing your clothes and then the detergent or the whatever with the perfume in your clothing, like Maybe like a hybrid.

Speaker 1:

It's more harm than good.

Speaker 2:

Just take a shower and maybe a little splash. What's wrong with just a spray of perfume?

be wearing any more clothes. That's exactly what it's like, what it's all over the runways, oh no, and the girls who are not like actual models, like layer belts and tutus and high pants, they turn their clothing upside down.

She has her underpants on the outside.

Speaker 1:

It's ridiculous. So this girl has mice like computer mice hanging from a jacket that is supposed to look like a keyboard. Oh, it does. But they did say sometimes the problem is the weight of the accessories.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so they offer a solution.

Speaker 1:

Oh, a bat brace. My solution would be similar to like Coco Chanel, like remove one piece before you leave. No, their solution is anchoring. I think they just need to anchor the items. No no, no.

Speaker 2:

Oh to their bodies. I mean that's ridiculous. That reminds me of remember that coat made out of stuffed animals. I mean, how did the bathroom? I was just saying, how do you sit down? Where are you going? Where are you going down? Where are you going? Where are you going? So this woman has a two-to-one and she must have on six belts.

Speaker 1:

I don't understand, not my style.

Speaker 2:

No, that's not quite for me. I mean, I get it when it's really cold. I want to wear a sweatshirt and a scarf and a coat, but when you're cold you don't think more belts. But I'm not like you know what this outfit needs Five more belts. I rarely wear a belt, let alone five belts. I've heard that tucking your shirt in is going out of style too. Just like kind of like in the front. Yeah, it's like the mullet tuck. I read that as well and I like that tuck. I do too. I was kind of late to the game on that, but I do like that. And what is it now? Untalked again.

I don't know, I do enjoy an Untalked as well you know what else I enjoy.

Oh, I haven't had a Frosty in years.

Oh, I have these tags that I bought in January. Well, it's still January and I bought six of them and they are $3 a piece. Okay, so they're like coupons yeah, you get a free Frosty if you show them. Oh, where'd you get them from Wendy's?

Speaker 2:

Oh, where do they make Frostys? Oh, so they're like a coupon. They're like a gift card coupon. But you can use them all year. Oh, that's very nice.

So I think my kids like them, but they love a Thin Mint. I do too. I haven't ordered any Girl Scout cookies.

Neither have I. I don't know where one can get them, but nowadays they have them in front of every storefront, but then you can also get them online.

Like people will put their kids on Facebook. Like I'm selling cookies, and here's my website, which, honestly, I appreciate because I don't know any actual Girl Scouts in our area.

My neighbor down the street is a Girl Scout.

And send her my way. I like the s'mores ones. Oh, I didn't know they made those. They're graham cracker cookies and then it's a chocolate and marshmallow inside. Oh yum it's delicious. It pairs well with a soup drop barf.

Well, all this food and drink talk kind of has me thinking about a really exciting new thing we have cooking up. Yeah well, we got cooking. It makes me think about Nightcap with the Norahs.

Speaker 2:

Me too. Nightcaps with the Norahs is something we've been trying to get into the works for a long time. We finally got her going. Yeah, we're very excited. We talked about it on our little mini Christmas episode.

Speaker 1:

I think that's what kind of started it, because we had our own nightcap, yes, and then decided we should branch out into the community.

Speaker 2:

This is something we're going to try to do once every few months, where we're going to find somebody in our community, in our world, that we can sit down with and have a drink with and just have a little chat.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, We'll meet them at the Opry, which is like a boutique cocktail bar, bottle shop and coffee roastery here, in town Owned by Dan Chauvin.

Yeah, the most fun thing about Nightcap with the Norahs is we truly step out of our studio and into one of the most charming spaces in Western Springs the Opera really.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and thank you for mixing this up To our listeners who can't see this. Norah and I have a beautiful cocktail in front of us. Can you tell us about this cocktail?

Speaker 2:

please Sure, and then we'll try it.

Speaker 3:

This one's called the Pollinator. It's a brand new drink on the menu we just launched. It really represents how beautiful and excellent simple things can be. It consists of a few ingredients lemon juice, honey, lavender and gin. You mix those ingredients together I actually add a little bit of lavender extract to the drink as well and then you garnish it with honeycomb and fresh lemon peel.

Speaker 1:

You mash the drink.

Speaker 2:

Oh, my lavender. Yes, I kind of had a feeling I'm going to taste that.

Speaker 1:

Are we supposed to put the garnish inside yeah, just slide it right in.

Speaker 3:

So slide it, it should bloom like a flower yeah, yeah and drop to the bottom and it'll start accentuating the drink as you work through it.

Speaker 1:

Does it have to sit for a minute?

Speaker 3:

Oh, no you can go for it. I'm like oh.

Speaker 1:

He says oh no.

Speaker 3:

It should be bright. The lavender will be prominent, but not overwhelming.

Speaker 2:

I feel like you're right, really balanced by the lemon juice. I'm really excited to try it To tie everything together, so the acid from the fresh citrus.

Speaker 1:

I love how the lavender stops in to visit.

Speaker 3:

Cuts through the sweetness and helps smell the flavors.

Speaker 2:

Right, it's so delicious and it kind of, you know, like that sweet spot, like taste buds you have, like gets you right in like where it makes you smile. Wait, this is so good. Thank you, that was kind of a get-go for me, and did you come?

Speaker 1:

Speaker 3:

your enjoy that one often. Okay, this one was created by carly. Okay, it's new here as well.

Speaker 1:

She put that drink together carly fan club right here, yeah yeah, um, she brought that one to us right away.

Speaker 3:

What we do here is to develop drinks. Everyone comes up with ideas and then we make variations of those until we get to the place that we want it, by incorporating feedback from so it's not just the whole bar staff, not just you, anybody else that happens to be here while we might be doing that oh, got it.

Speaker 3:

Um, that's so fun that you incorporate everybody's ideas there's no limits on the creativity that we try to foster, so we're going to continue to just keep pushing, and pushing, and pushing to see what we can come up with.

Speaker 2:

I feel like that's the vibe in here, like it feels like a very creative and friendly space to be in. So can you tell us a little bit about your background and how this came to be?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, it really came out of not wanting to do just a cafe. When I launched Daydream Coffee in 2018, we didn't have a storefront. It was all online sales, direct-to-consumer and wholesale, and I would get asked fairly often if I was going to open a brick-and-mortar, and I was pretty on the ropes about it. I wasn't as into the barista side of the industry as I was the roasting side. I'm really into the sourcing and roasting. Still, I've warmed up to the barista side and drink creation. So there's a lot of parallels between that and cooking and cocktail creation. I just thought I don't really know if I want to just do a cafe from a business perspective as well. I just thought there was some weaknesses to that model, especially being in a small town like ours, so I just put more thought into it. I thought I can bring a bunch of my interests under one roof, and that's sort of how the concept came together.

Speaker 1:

This is a really cool concept. Maybe we can talk a little bit about what exactly the Opry has to offer in the morning versus in the evening for our listeners who aren't familiar.

Speaker 3:

There's a lot going on under one roof here. We're a coffee roastery and cafe. By day we serve specialty grade coffee that's roasted on site, brewed freshly every day, along with a handful of specialty drinks and all of your standard coffee drinks. And then by night we're a bottle shop, craft cocktail bar and music venue focusing on Americana, country and bluegrass. Artists that we book from all over the country, mostly professional traveling musicians who are doing music as a career, and we sell tickets to those concerts, and those happen most Fridays and Saturdays. It's kind of a no-frills place. I thought it should be a very relaxed environment but offer the best that we can do in all of our centers of excellence. So our focus is on quality and no pretense really.

Speaker 2:

Are you a musician? Yes, that's what I was going to ask. I am not.

Speaker 3:

I've always loved music and by the time I had an interest in playing it, I didn't really have a lot of time on my hands to learn, and I'd really like to at some point learn an instrument or learn how to sing, but at this time I don't. But, yeah, you could come here and get one of our cocktails, or you can get a Miller Lite and get draft beer. I think it's just a well-rounded place. Craft beer.

Speaker 1:

I think it's just a well-rounded place. I love that it offers so many things. There's really something for everyone, whether you're a coffee drinker, a craft beer drinker or your family.

Speaker 2:

One of the really cool things I like that you had mentioned to us is that the option of having food delivered and you could bring your family and you know we are all parents of four children, so we understand that either you have all of them or some of them with you.

Speaker 3:

But either way they all need to eat. Yes, yes, we want to be family friendly in the cafe and in the bar to the furthest extent that we can. We have food trucks on site from time to time, but you're also welcome to bring in your own food or order it in for delivery or whatever you'd like to eat it here while you're having a beer, watching a game or whatever you might be up to.

Speaker 2:

That's really accommodating and so thoughtful too, because, like you said, it's about a quality experience where you can get a good drink or a good cup of coffee and enjoy yourself listening to good music, like it doesn't have to be stuff, and it's so easy, too, to like to stop and grab food and then pop in here for a drink.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, we really want to build our community within our community right Be kind of just a cornerstone of Western Springs. And for all these different things that we're doing, we have some fun events throughout the year as well. They're always family-friendly. Having four kids and myself it just kind of comes naturally.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we don't have a choice Having a welcoming environment for them, yeah, yeah, do your kids like to come with you?

Speaker 3:

they do. Yeah, my oldest harry. He's picked up a few shifts here in the cafe, oh, serving pastries and helping out sweeping and things like that right, he always has a good time with that. And the younger ones? They just are mostly interested in the donuts.

Speaker 1:

So and you have donuts on the weekends.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, we have donuts every day that we're open, and then we have croissants on Saturdays.

Speaker 1:

Dan, I am kind of distracted by that giant machine behind you. I'm trying to figure out what it is and what it does.

Speaker 2:

And do you?

Speaker 1:

have a license to operate it. What's going on back there?

Speaker 3:

It kind of looks like a jet engine or it looks like a 1950s robot.

Speaker 1:

Or perhaps a time machine? I was thinking.

Speaker 3:

It could be any one of those things. But yeah, it's actually, that's the coffee roastery we roast on.

Speaker 1:

It's a very important machine.

Speaker 3:

Yes, it's a 14, 15-pound roaster. It's actually from a company called Coffee Tank Engineering that's considered to be one of the best in the industry and, yeah, that thing is really is a workhorse. It produces some really nice roasts.

Speaker 1:

And it smells amazing. A lot of control and consistency throughout the roasting process.

Speaker 2:

So wait, so you went on.

Speaker 1:

Amazon and you ordered it.

Speaker 3:

Yeah right.

Speaker 1:

And you got it via Prime.

Speaker 2:

I actually got lucky with it.

Speaker 1:

Who installs something like that?

Speaker 3:

How I found it was. I was just doing research online and I had reached out to them to see if they had this particular model in the United States anywhere, so they're mostly international. I really fell in love with this machine and they just happened to have one up in Vermont that came to them from a trade show and this very large macro roaster in Vermont was utilizing it for classes up there, so it had low mileage and they gave me a good, a good deal on it.

Speaker 2:

Did you have to go pick her up at Vermont?

Speaker 3:

So I did, with the help of an, an electrician and a plumber and a professional HVAC company. Okay, we we got it installed. We had to break it down and put it back together to get it in here because it wouldn't fit through the doorways. None of this comes without its pain points, but it's all right.

Speaker 2:

Was that one of those where you're like, oh I hope this works the whole time and then, when you're done, it's like when you're putting furniture together you're like please don't have any extra pieces, yeah, 100 that's funny because I always have extra pieces and I'm like, oh, that's so nice of the company.

Speaker 1:

They sent me 17 extra screws in case I need them. Why is this leftover really? Yeah, oh my god, oh well, can we launch into some?

Speaker 2:

And I saw your son and his friend and I was like oh my, do you need a ride? And he was like maybe I do, Let me check. So he contacted you, said Mrs Taylor will give me a ride home.

And I said great, so I turned around.

Speaker 2:

And so then we waited.

Speaker 1:

No, he didn't. He said Mrs Taylor will give us a ride home.

Speaker 2:

Oh, meaning him and his friend Jake. Yes, so I had Jake and Mike and then, finally, aiden got into the car, because we were waiting quite a while for Aiden. And then I was like, all right boys, here we go, jake, you got to tell me where you live and we dropped Jake off, and then that's when Mike goes.

Speaker 1:

We forgot Elle because Elle texted me and said you told me to take my time on the way out, but now I can't find you.

Speaker 3:

So they, they left about it. It was fine, oh my gosh, I felt. And you?

Speaker 1:

had to go to rehearsal afterwards, so you really had a lot of. I should have been picking up your kids. It's all good how about your my law. Is that hotmail? Yes, I still use hotmail. Hotmail like reformatted their inbox on the phone, so it's like grouped into primary and announcements and promotions. Oh, and someone like me who never reads any of their email likes it all in one place.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I don't like to have to click to different departments. I don't want them sorting out my email for me. No, I'll sort it out.

Speaker 1:

Out my email for me. No, I'll sort it out. I'll do my own. Yeah, sort it out.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that's my goal. I would imagine you could go into your settings and fix that.

Speaker 1:

On my computer. It's how it used to be. So I now just check on my computer. Surprisingly, I don't get very many personal emails.

Speaker 2:

It's all in the promotions, you know what you should do Just go into the promotions and do select all and delete it. Delete all of them.

Speaker 1:

I'll think about it. I'm like an email hoarder.

Speaker 2:

You are. I love it, though. That's the only thing. And then my high. Oh wait, can we talk about something Go?

Speaker 1:

The iced tea. That's a low yeah, did you follow up? We followed back.

Speaker 2:

We did. Yes, I sent you the response.

Speaker 1:

Oh, that was a bologna sandwich.

Speaker 2:

That was a bologna sandwich on stale bread With a side of pickles, ugh. So we emailed the company explaining our you know our disappointment in the price gouge that they had, and they wrote back and they said we understand. Thanks for taking the time. We recognize that the price increase does seem significant. I'm like well, because it is. This decision was not made lightly and reflects the current market conditions, vendor options and increased costs.

Speaker 1:

And that is a bologna sandwich, because the price of iced tea per glass didn't rise, yeah, at Egg Harbor. Nor did the price of iced tea anywhere at any other location besides.

Speaker 2:

Egg Harbor. I haven't heard anything on the news about a tea shortage.

Speaker 1:

And I didn't want to say anything about that because I didn't want them to hike the price on the menu.

Speaker 2:

Oh, right, right, so disappointing. They got back very quickly, which I appreciate the timely response, but it was a very because they completely ignored the fact that you're getting less and paying more, correct.

Speaker 1:

And if you were to fill up a glass of 32 ounces, which is a normal large size, that it would be ten dollars. It's crazy.

Speaker 2:

Actually it'd be nine but whatever, but anyways, but my hi is that it's rory's birthday today and it yeah, it's actually today.

Speaker 1:

Actually today, I thought it was monday grace's birthday was monday.

Speaker 2:

My oh okay, yeah, he just he woke up and he's like it's my birthday. He just felt very happy and I was happy for him and yeah, good, I love his birthday. I love kids birthdays. His birth story was just such a crazy bonkers fast forward kind of situation that it's fun to think about it.

Speaker 1:

14 years later. It's incredible to think about how quickly things progress, yes, yeah, and just start to finish.

Speaker 2:

He had things to do, yeah, places to go.

Speaker 1:

Well, happy birthday to Rory.

Speaker 2:

Thank you. What's your high?

Speaker 1:

And my high is that the bike that we got John for his birthday was, I don't know, kind of acting up, and I took it down to the bike shop earlier this week and they said, oh, this is an easy fix. So sorry that you had to deal with this. Can you wait a minute while we fix it? I said sure. So we fixed it while I was right there, filled up the tires, shined it up a little bit and put it right back in my car.
