Trick-or-Treating: From Soul Cakes to Snickers Bars

A weekend full of music and family sets the stage for a bright, candid tour through Halloween as it really happens: costumes that may not arrive, kids sprinting between porches, and parents juggling logistics with a smile. We kick off with the pure joy of a Paul McCartney concert—ukulele tributes, Lennon harmonies, and the kind of encore that sticks with you—before pivoting to birthday games, school calendars, and the chaotic charm of spooky season.
From there we dive into the strange lure of dirty sodas, balancing curiosity with common sense, and land on an actually useful hack: an AI-powered Lego sorting service that turns mixed bricks back into buildable sets. We test Aldi’s “Crustless” PB&J as a surprisingly solid Uncrustables dupe, talk candy economics, and share simple systems that keep the sugar rush from swallowing the week—think gallon bags, donations to schools or troops, and smart swaps for diabetic needs.
We pull the camera back to explore Halloween’s roots, from Celtic Samhain and soul cakes to mumming, Guy Fawkes Night, and the postwar boom that made trick-or-treating a kid-first ritual. Then we get tactical: apartment-building routes for bad weather, safety rules for new drivers, and why putting Halloween on a Friday would save teachers, parents, and sleep. It’s warm, practical, a little nerdy, and fully committed to the neighborhood magic that makes this night feel like a tiny, glowing holiday in the middle of autumn.
If you loved this conversation, follow the show, share it with a friend who’s planning costumes at 11 p.m., and leave a quick review with your best candy trade tip.

Hi, thanks for joining us today. It's Nora. And Nora, welcome to all our listeners near and far. We're glad you're here. We sure are. And I'm glad to see you. Glad to see you too. How are you? I'm good.
unknownGood.
SPEAKER_00We had a fun impromptu catch up on Monday night. That was so nice of you. Well, it was nice to see you. We always love to see you and your husband, and we had a lovely time. Yeah, a few giggles. Yes.
SPEAKER_01Keeps you honest on a Monday night, I will say.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Wait, it was Monday, not Sunday, though. Oh, was it Sunday? I don't remember.
SPEAKER_01You know what it might have been Sunday? Because Oh, it was. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Paul McCartney In Minneapolis
Family Birthday And Party Hat Games
SPEAKER_00It was Sunday because the kids had off on Monday. Half our kids had school, half didn't. And those are tricky when some kids are home and some kids aren't. I don't get anything done. Correct. Yeah. And my high school is very self-sufficient, so as are yours. So I can't really justify it. Although I do. Um, during the day when they were off, I was like, oh, we went out for lunch. Oh, you did? Yeah, so that was nice. But over the weekend, Nora, I saw a concert. I know I have that written in my notes. I almost forgot to tell our listeners about it. Alan and I got to go see Paul McCartney in concert in Minneapolis. What's the backstory on that? Well, I love the Beatles. Big fan, big fan of Paul McCartney. And in July, I saw the email and that he was going to be on tour. And, you know, he is performing in Chicago, but we will probably be in New York when he's here for those dates. And we were bummed out. And then we saw that he was going to be in Minneapolis on October 17th. And I was said, oh no, that's my mom's birthday. So maybe we shouldn't do that. But my mom is a huge Beatles fan. She and my aunt saw them in the 60s at Kamiski Park when they were here for their first tour. And she was like, go, go to the concert. And she also saw how many played at Wrigley Field a while ago. So she was such a good sport about her. She's like, We'll babysit, don't miss that concert. Go, go, go. Oh, that was fun. So we did. 83 Nora put on a two and a half hour show. That's incredible. From like guitar, different guitars, a mandolin, a a ukulele. And he was like, Oh, George gave me this ukulele, which is like mind-blowing. And then he talked about John Lennon and how much does he miss him? And in the encore, they played a video of John Lennon singing and Paul McCartney sang along with it. Oh. And he said, It's just nice to sing with my friend John again. Like cute. And then the best part was a lot of boomers in the audience, they don't like to stand during a concert. The first song came on. He's opened with help. And Al and I stood up. We were cheering, screaming, and going crazy. And then we realized everyone around us was sitting. And we were like, well, okay. If this is how it's gonna be, I'll be able to do that. You settled in. It was delightful. I bet. Yeah, I was like, I could have worn nicer shoes. Yeah. Because I got to sit the whole time. But then the kind of the cherry on the Sunday was then I got to see a friend of mine I haven't seen in like 12 years. You had an awesome weekend. It was phenomenal. And then I came home and celebrated my mom's birthday with my family. It was really nice. Yeah, that was nice. What did you guys do for your mom's birthday? We went to the Elm. Oh, nice. And all of us got together and had dinner. And then it was cute. My sister brought party hats, but she didn't realize they were shark party hats. So instead of doing them like sharks, she challenged all the grandkids to make some sort of art piece of art out of them. And then the winner got$20. Oh, she loves a game with$20. You know what's convenient is Aaron didn't have cash. But I did. So then I had to pay my own child$20 for the game that Aaron made up. So that was kind of funny. But uh yeah, it was really, really nice. How about you? Good. Not too much to report. A lot of back and forth and soccer and all the things. I'm trying to get all the costumes in order for Halloween. What are your kids going as? Nothing great. Nothing green. John's going as a Squid Games character with two other pals. He's actually never seen Squid Games. Okay, that's what I was gonna ask. No, none of them have. Okay. Mm-mm. None of the any Aiden and Rory watched it, and it's horrifying. Oh.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Well, there's that. A friend of ours ordered hers from Timu, so I did the same. And I just hope it arrives.
Halloween Costumes And Ordering Mishaps
SPEAKER_00Oh, it's not here yet. It's not here yet. No. It might dissolve when he puts it up. That's fine. If it rains, it's just kind of fine. That's fine.
SPEAKER_01Then you won't have to worry again. And then Catherine Grayson, her pals are going as sharks and lifeguards. Cute. Isn't that cute?
SPEAKER_00Which one did she pick? She's a shark. I actually have a shark tail and fin from Hannah Anderson that I just found cleaning out Kevin's closet. He was big into sharks for a life. I could. I'm gonna fit right in with all those. So within eight great girls. Perfect. And then Elle has several costumes. Okay. And I don't think Mike will dress up. And that's all my kids. Yeah, that's are you and Ryan dressing up? I don't know. Sometimes we do, sometimes we don't. Last year, John was a football player, so we were all football players, and it was cute. That's cute.
SPEAKER_01I miss the days of a themed.
SPEAKER_00You always did a good job. I always tried and it never. We only did it one year successfully with Star Wars.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you know what? Speaking of Halloween, do you know what Mississippi, Nebraska, and Kentucky all have in common?
Candy Corn Stats And Dentist Jokes
SPEAKER_00I was gonna say they all end in vowels, but can Y is not always considered a vowel. But I'm assuming now it's something Halloween related. They all have the highest amount of candy corn orders via Instacart. Really? Yeah. I should tell Rory he loves candy corn. But he likes the special, like quality. Yeah. Likes the high-end candy corn. Yes, he's very fancy. Wow, that's interesting. They also have the highest amount of insurance paid to dentists. I'm assuming. I'm sure. Sure. But I speaking of sugar, I have a question. I know I'm so late to the party on this, and I know you've talked about it before. Dirty sodas. Yeah, dirty sodas. I didn't really understand what they were. But I saw in one of my newsletters there was an article about the ones that they have at Applebee's. Uh-huh. These don't sound good to me, Norm.
SPEAKER_01Oh, the dirty sodas we order from the place, from the dirty soda shop. I can't remember what it's called.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Don't look like that.
SPEAKER_00This is Mountain Dew berry bash, passion fruit. Half and half?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, half and half cream at the cream. Yeah. No, we don't get there's no whipped cream at this place.
Dirty Sodas: Curiosity And Calories
SPEAKER_00And then, but just half and half? And grenadine and Pepsi? Is this what they do? Yeah. They all have so it's all half and half. Swig is, I think, the name of the place we go. And does it taste good? Some of them do, some of them don't. Like I like the diet coke with lime and coconut. Oh, coconut water or coconut milk or something. Something. I don't know. And then lime and it's good.
SPEAKER_01And then our friend in media social media wisbang slash marketing wisbang had one as well. And then she adds a little bit of, I think, coconut creamer. And then lime. She can make it at home. Yeah, I mean it's a I love that it's a diet coke. And then or these well, not apple bees. Okay.
Lego Sorting With AI
SPEAKER_00Like, don't you think that's like 250 calories in a glass? At least, yeah. That's different. With Mountain Dew and half an F? Yow. We'll bring one. We'll try one next week. We will? Yeah. Okay. And I because again, I was like, ugh, half an F and pop. And then I thought, well, I guess if you were having a root beer float, ice cream has dairy in there. So Yeah. We'll try it. Oof. Pushing gears a little bit. Please. Have you heard of this company called Sort of Brick? Sort A brick. No. You can send your scrambled mix-matched Legos to them.
SPEAKER_01And then the AI will scan it or do whatever AI does. It gets better. It gets better. Then it will package it into smaller groups of things you can build. And if it recognizes that you need an extra piece, then customers have the option to purchase the extra pieces to complete the set.
SPEAKER_00This is like the best thing I've ever heard of a clean sort package and send them back to you. Could I send my entire bin of minifigures and they would just be able to do that? No, they don't do minifigures. Oh no!
unknownShoot!
SPEAKER_00Oh, they do! I used to be psychotic about this. Yeah, I do know that. The bins, head shirts, pants, weapons, and accessories. Oh, and hats and hair. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I knew that about you.
SPEAKER_00So and I used to have them all by color, too, all the pieces by color. Which blows my mind that you did that. I sustained it for a really long time and then I finally was like, no one is.
SPEAKER_01You had to go crazy when the kids would take them out.
SPEAKER_00It was just too much. No, I didn't mind as long as they were playing with the Did they help put them back?
SPEAKER_01I used to try to get them to help, but they never So it says the prices start at twelve dollars for each kilogram of bricks sent. So how much is a kilogram?
SPEAKER_00Less than a pound, right? Oh no, it's more than a pound. A kilogram is 2.2 pounds. Okay. So for two pounds of Legos is a lot.
SPEAKER_01But then for an additional$30 per kilogram, they'll sort they'll put them in the packages.
SPEAKER_00Because could they do it so that it's just separate them? Like I don't necessarily need them in a set.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So that's the$12. That's the$12 to have them clean, sorted, cleaned and sorted.
SPEAKER_00These people are geniuses, and I would like to work for them. Well, fortunately, they're basically in Lithoria. Yeah. Well, that's a shame. That's a longer U.S. point of contact. I mean, it's a genius concept.
SPEAKER_01When I started reading the article, I got deeper into it and it said two sorting centers in Western. And I was like, Western Springs. But turns out the word is Europe.
SPEAKER_00Oh. Yeah. This is so awesome. I know. This will change my life. Are you going to try it? Yes. You are? 100%. Okay. Do you know how many Legos we have? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It can identify 25,000 different types of bricks across 4,000 shapes and 40 colors, not including minifigs and mini-dolls.
SPEAKER_00Okay, as soon as they're in minifigures, I would love to have all those sorted again.
SPEAKER_01Okay, let's start. Here's a picture. Do you see the picture of it?
SPEAKER_00I do.
SPEAKER_01How it turns it into a how nice those little packages are that come? They're so cute.
Aldi’s “Crustless” PB&J Taste Test
Rolling Ring And Wedding Band Moment
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I know. Amazing. Oh, so you'll so they'll do it, they'll go all through it and then they'll send you options. Yeah. Oh my god. Because we had sets that, you know, they fall apart, and then you you're like, I can't rebuild this. I would try. I would go online and download the directions and try to rebuild it, try to find all the pieces. Yoda's hut on Dagobah. I tried like three or four times. You did. Or your kids did. Because they're like, we need a new one. And I was like, no, you don't. You have all the pieces right here. And then you guys. But uh wow. Well, thank you. And a follow-up from last week, I brought my ring, my rolling ring. Oh, you did. Did you see it? Oh, I love it. It's neat. And then this is my plain wedding band that matches Al's. Let me see. Some Oh, there are the dolphins in the Yeah, right? The dolphins and all the diners. But really, isn't it great with what? Our initials on the inside. Oh, that's cute. And one more thing before we check in with our sponsors. Sure. Last week we talked about the uncrustable dupes. Yes. And I found some. Real. I didn't find the Trader Joe's one. Okay. Well, but I wonder if they've been.
SPEAKER_01But I found this is from Aldi.
SPEAKER_00Crustless.
SPEAKER_01This is called crustless. We can post a picture. Peanut butter and grape jelly. Similar nutrition facts.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01I did check.
SPEAKER_00Take a look. Oh my god. The packaging is like insane. It's very similar. The edges are very similar. It is a square though. Do you eat them? I don't like jelly. I know, so I just wasn't sure. I can eat one. Okay. You don't have to, thanks. I don't want to waste it. Okay. Isn't it frozen? I like mine a little frozen. That was all brat to hang on. That happens with the regular one, it's true. Okay. So far it's the same experience. Alright. Where it takes a few bites to get to the good stuff. Okay. Did you ever break it in half? Oh, it's so frozen. It tastes a chance to say. Really? Well, I mean you're gonna have peanut butter and jelly. How much different could it taste? I didn't check the price. Oh, okay. Phew. Because how much are well, how many are the regular? Do you only get four in an increustable's box? No. I thought you got six. Or you got ten.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I buy the industrial ones. I don't usually buy them by fours. But these taste a heck of a lot like increustables.
SPEAKER_00That's interesting. I wonder if they're next on the on the litigation schedule. Yeah. Wow. Interesting. But I don't think Kroger, like Mariano's, did they have any? Not that I no, this is I just found these guys. Well, thank you for doing the research. You're welcome. I appreciate that. I forgot you didn't like jelly. I know. I'm sorry. I'm weird like that. I just don't want to waste any more calories eating this because that gonna continue. You know what? You'll be happy to have that later. Oh, yeah, well. They're just so good for sports. Yeah. Because they're balanced and they give the kids a quick jolt of energy. And there's some protein, so yeah, they're doing things. Yeah. So I'm looking on the Mariana's website. I only see smokers. Yeah. Oh, I take it back. Here's the Kroger, and they're also called crustless. They're a new item. Oh no, no, no. The same. But then they're calling it the same thing as Aldi. Yeah. This is I think this packaging is better. Like, what are those? You put a 10 for$10. What are those grapes falling out of it? Oh, yeah. The grapes are yours aren't purple. These are red grapes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Those are colored as well. This I would associate these grapes more with wine. Those I look more like grape jelly? Yeah. Yeah. Anyways, well, that's we'll have to keep our eyes on the ooh peanut butter and honey. Maybe I would like those. I'm not a real big fan of honey, but I've got to be around. Are those Kroger? No, these are smuckers. Are those the high protein ones? I don't think so. Okay. They're just peanut butter and honey. Huh. Oh, the four, ten, and fifteen. Well, ten for ten's a deal. Ten for ten is a deal. Awesome. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Awesome. Awesome.
SPEAKER_00Totally rad on the increases.
SPEAKER_01What do you think if you put them in your freezer, would your kids notice the difference?
Sponsor: Mike Haggerty Buick GMC
SPEAKER_00Oh, they don't eat them enough. Do you think yours would know? I think they would. I think the shape the shape would throw a little bit. They would probably still eat them though. Mm-hmm. All right. Should we check in with our sponsor? Let's do it. All right. Hey, Nora. Hi, Nora. How are you? I'm great. I was just wondering, do you like firecrackers? Is the Pope from Chicago? I sure do. Mike Haggerty Buick GMC. Bless my soul. God bless America. New Canyons, Sierra, HDs, terrains, Acadias, Yukons, you name it, they've got it. Oh my goodness. But the real firecracker of a sale is the 2025 Buick Envision. You can lease it now for$3.39 a month for 24 months. God bless America.
SPEAKER_01So head on down to Mike Haggerty Buick GMC on the corner of 93rd in Cicero or check them out online at Haggertycars.com and tell them the North Ascension.
Trick-Or-Treating: What Works Now
SPEAKER_00And now back to the show. Our topic today, since it is a spooky month, trick or treating. It is spooky month. Do your kids say that? No. Like it's a spooky month. It's like this whole internet thing. But yes, it's spooky month. It's October and it's trickier. Tricky treating. Yes, I loved trick or treating when the kids were little because it was just around the block and the weather was nice and it went slow. No, the weather was nice. That's the rub. And now a bolt around the neighborhood. The weather is questionable. Yeah. And they're out for too long. I know. I've never lived anywhere. No, I take that back. We had two Halloweens in Texas that we we had nice weather for, but the best was when we lived in apartment buildings. Oh, because it was inside? Yes. Trick-or-treating in an apartment is the way to go. Okay. So find yourself an apartment.
SPEAKER_01Find an apartment complex near you.
SPEAKER_00Then you don't need coats. It was so great when we lived in South Bend. The only problem was most of the people who lived in the apartment building were students. Because it was when Al was getting his MBA. So not all of them were prepared. And then also Rory kept walking, he was three. He kept walking into people's houses. Like they'd open the door and he was like, hello, trick-or-treat, and would just walk right in in his little triceratops costume. That's funny. Did your kids ever do that walk in the house? No. Okay, just mine. Just mine. One year we had Halloween canceled. Why? Because we were in New Jersey for Hurricane Sandy. Oh. And it was the week before Halloween. And then two days before Halloween, we had a humongous snowstorm. And Halloween was essentially like, yeah, because like you could like people still didn't have like power and were displaced. And then we had a humongous snowstorm. Did you do a redo or is that just it? Some people were like, let's have a redo. But I'm like, it's gone. That ship has sailed. Yeah. Agree.
SPEAKER_01I love doing Halloween in our neighborhood because I think our neighbors, especially the older neighbors, love to see the kids.
Halloween In Apartments And Weather Woes
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah. There's something about staying in your neighborhood for Halloween that gets me. That is nice. I think Yeah. And I think it's also nice. It was nice when they were small to all go together, but it is nice to know that we live in a neighborhood where like my fifth grader and can go off and do his thing. And I know he's nearby. I know if he needs help, there is enough people around that know him and know me that can help.
SPEAKER_01I think yeah, and I think they really just run from house to house. So I'm always like, yes.
SPEAKER_00Run and kill. Just go. Why can't they walk, Nora? We didn't did you run from house to house? You know, I don't remember. I didn't run. Are they worried they're gonna get like run out of candy? Maybe. I don't. Do your girls run? Or does Kat and Grace run? I don't think so. Maybe it's a boy thing. Maybe it is. I don't know. Is there a certain candy your kids go after? Well, what's kind of nice is they always like to get Skittles and give them to Eden because he uses them for low blood sugars. But Rory, uh, they're all different. Rory likes a Hershey bar. Rose is more of a Kit Kat, but she also likes like sour things. Oh, she does? Yes. And then Kevin is a Kit Kat guy. Okay. How about your kids? Yeah, really I think.
SPEAKER_01So my older two don't eat a ton of candy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01My youngest will eat all the candy and not discriminate. And then Kath and Grace, I don't know. She just last year she donated it.
SPEAKER_00I let them usually I give them a gallon size Ziploc. Fit in what you can. And then yeah, we donated it. Somebody was, I think the high school collects it.
SPEAKER_01I'll give it to whoever is collecting it. I don't even know.
SPEAKER_00I brought it to a dentist office one year because they were sending it to troops. I do take out all the take vibes. Oh, those are your favorite. I do like a butterfinger as well. I like a butterfinger too, but it like it's small. Like one butterfinger will do it for me. Yeah, I also take out all the MMs because if we do a movie night, I like to put it in their popcorn. I get the stickers for my dad.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
Candy Preferences, Trades, And Donations
SPEAKER_00And that kind of thing. Do you ever did you ever get a popcorn ball? When you're old, did you? When we lived in Pennsylvania, I remember getting a couple. My mom was like, throw those. Al's mom used to give him money for his candy because he had diabetes. And just it was harder when Al was growing up to kind of eat whatever you want. It's easier now with the glucose monitoring in the pumps. So she would give him 10 cents per piece of candy. And then him being the finance-minded individual he is, would open up a bag of MMs and be like, one, two, three. He made a killing. Yeah, I bet he did.
SPEAKER_01Did you your kids trade? Like sort and trade?
SPEAKER_00They will a little bit. And then, but sometimes they have homework. Like if there was a teacher who would be like, count all your community. I'm like, oh fun sponge. I am excited this year too that it's on a Friday. I am too. Because I think Halloween should always be on the last Friday of October. I love that. If I ever run for office, that's going to be my major platform. Okay, great. Great. I'm I'm all for that. It should be a Friday. I like the day of school because then they're not like, can we go? Can we go? Can we all? And I like that it's a weekend. And for the teachers too, that's brutal to get kids the next day. Ah, yeah. You know, I'm sure you know. Yeah, and for parents, it's brutal to get your kids situated for the next day. Because it's hanging over you. Because you're like, I want you to have fun, but yeah. Yeah, we're gonna rage. Yeah, so this year, get ready. Yes. And actually, COVID Halloween was not bad. Oh, you know what? We had some neighbors that made like those shoots, and that was kind of like I appreciated people's creativity. And then we just had a table. And it was kind of weird, but then it was kind of nice. It's kind of nice because we could like visit in the driveway. The weather was mild. I kind of liked not going maybe in like going all the way up to the drive the houses. You kind of knew who was home. It's kind of yeah, it was a nice vibe. That was one of like the COVID things where I was like, meh, this isn't so bad.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, this isn't too bad at all. I was reading a little bit about the history of Halloween.
COVID Shoots, Driveway Treats, Nice Vibes
SPEAKER_00I did a lot of reading about it. Okay, you go there. I got real carried away. Oh, I bet you did. Okay, I knew that I was excited. How about the Irish people? I know. Yeah. Us Celtic people. Yes. Yes. But uh they did think it was strange when they would go around and knock on the doors and say, we'll pray for the your dead souls.
SPEAKER_01And could you please give us some soul cakes in return?
The Long, Weird History Of Halloween
SPEAKER_00But what I loved is that they're these were poor people who had nothing. That's true. They had nothing to spare, so they're like, We'll pray for you. Not for free. All we got. So could you please give me something for my prayers? Oh. So they were trying to. I had a good laugh on that though. I think it's so creepy. Someone's like, I'll pray for you if you give me some food. Now you'd be like, please don't. Please don't have me in your brain. Oh, where else did that deep dive take? Well, because when I saw it, the what the Celtic people called it, it's spelled in Gaelic, S-A-M-H-I-N. Samhin. But it's not pronounced that way. It's called Sawin. Oh, naturally. Because Gaelic is bonkers. And there's like it doesn't.
SPEAKER_01And mine was kind of Arabic.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah. So that's really all they had to offer. God bless them for being, you know. Entrepreneurial. Entrepreneurial. Exactly. But I thought it was interesting too to think it's so similar to Day of the Dead. Where the Irish people were like, oh, it's demons and people who are coming to get us and kidnap us and take us back with them. Where the Spanish cultures were, Hispanic cultures were like, oh no, it's our ancestors coming to see us. That's kind of like all souls, day. Yeah. A little bit. So but I was like, oh, come on, the poor Irish were like, it's gotta be bad. If they're coming, it's probably not a good thing. Being the worst. But that then in that it they would it kind of progressed to something called mumming. Did you read it? I saw mumming, yeah. Where you they would go to the door and be or walking around town dressed as ghosts or demons and perform antics for food and drinks. Yeah. Did you see some of those pictures? Yeah. Yeah, those creepy. Super creepy. All that like medieval kind of like and then you you also think like, what do they make those out of? It wasn't like a they weren't like Amazon.
SPEAKER_01I was gonna say Spirit Halloween. Same idea, yeah.
SPEAKER_00When the people kind of came to America early days, they were so religious that they didn't want anything to do with all those pagan things. But then when all the immigrants came in the 1800s, they're like, guess what we're bringing? There we go. We're bringing all our pagan stuff. Because then the English brought Guy Fox Day. Did you remember? I didn't see that. No. That it's Guy Fox Day, it's called Bonfire Night. So a lot of these started with big giant fires and then they got smaller and smaller until it's a candle and a pumpkin.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_01One more candle and pumpkin can be girl.
SPEAKER_00Guy Fox is celebrating the failed attempt of a Catholic person trying to blow up parliament. Oh, oops. Yeah. Didn't go well. So then he was killed. So they're kind of like, ha ha ha. Remember that time? They almost blew up parliament, and then they have effigies of and then they burn effigies of this person on almost kind of like a scarecrow version of the person. Oh, that's terrible. I know. It's pretty gruesome. So then the Irish immigrants brought Guy Fox Day. The Irish brought at this point, then it was called All Hollows Eve. And they were doing it and then No, whoa, hello. That's a different kind of holidays. Celebrating Halloween in the U US, but then it kind of took a dark turn. With the trick and treat? With in the 1930s, because people, it was the depression and it was a bit sad, and it got violent. And in 1933, they called it Black Halloween. And it escalated into a really violent thing. And then finally, it was like World War II. People were kind of still trick-or-treating, but then it was after World War II when the sugar rations were done and it went like gangbusters.
SPEAKER_01Yes, okay.
SPEAKER_00Is that what that where you ended up? That's where I ended up.
SPEAKER_01We yeah, we got we both got to the same place.
Modern Logistics, Safety, And Friday Win
SPEAKER_00I just took a shorter route. Yeah, there. Well, that's probably for the best. So that's okay. But it is an interesting progress. I mean, it's been around for centuries of people wanting free stuff.
SPEAKER_01I love it. I love how I mean I love free stuff, but like I love Hollywood.
SPEAKER_00I do. I like it. I I find it to be stressful in this time of my life trying to manage. Um, I wish I could just bring the four kids out trick-or-treating and do it as a family still. But I know that's not gonna happen. I have four kids in four different directions. And my husband's gonna be in Boston. Trick-or-treating. They have the best candy at Boston. So he's going there. No, he's going to see Notre Dame play Boston College. Fun. So but I will be boots on the ground and shopping.
SPEAKER_01Well, you don't really have to. I'm glad it's a Friday because it's not. Well, and you don't really have to worry about all of them.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. But I did tell my older son who has his license, I was like, I don't want you driving around. Like if you're going to someone's house, you drive there. And stay. You stay. That's fair. I don't want you because there's just so many little kids around running. They're running, sprinting, sprinting, running. Now I hate driving on Halloween. Yeah. So I'm like, oh. That was good thinking. That was good parenting. Such a good.
Highs And Lows, Then Goodbye
SPEAKER_01Should we launch into highs and lows?
SPEAKER_00Well, my high is that another awesome. Honestly. Yes. Oh, my low is that. I'm having some car troubles, Nora. This I know. There was an accident. I was not involved in the accident. Someone else was driving my car, and I have a broken axle. My poor minivan, I'm poor muffin. The axle is broken, and she's in the car hospital. I don't know when I'm getting her back. That's okay. We'll pray for it. And I'm just, I just miss her. I just miss her. She'll be back.
SPEAKER_01She'll be back.
SPEAKER_00Poor muffin. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Well, my low isn't nearly as bad. I used the girl's leave-in conditioner. Ooh. And I don't know if I like didn't get it all out. It was a hair mask in the shower.
SPEAKER_00No, it was a hair mask. Oh. I don't know if I like didn't get it all out or if it's just like it's very flat.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_00A little shiny? It is shiny, but it's very flat. It's very greasy. It feels like it feels. The film on there. So you can't see. It doesn't look that way, but I understand if it feels that way. It doesn't matter. So that's my way. I was blow drying Rose's hair last night after her shower, and there was a lot of soap in there. Oh. I was like, oh, Rose. I'll rinse that a little better, kiddo. Well, we're in the same boat.
SPEAKER_01My high said I was at a meeting at NAS for an event that I'm co-chairing. And it was so nice to work and volunteer and help all toward a greater good with a really nice group of people.
SPEAKER_00That's awesome. It was so great. It was really encouraging and it was fun. And yeah. Yeah. Administration and people and parents, all parents.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. There was just four of us. But yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It was great. That is awesome. My hi was my mom's birthday celebration.
SPEAKER_01Oh, having everybody together. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It was really nice. It was nice to celebrate her.
SPEAKER_01One happy birthday to your mom.
SPEAKER_00Happy birthday, Mrs. Ryan. Oh, I'm sure she will appreciate that. Well, happy uh trick or treating to everybody and stay safe. Yeah, go out there and get yourself a soul cake. Pray for us. Bye.
