John McMahon was in a psychiatric hospital, where he was given 6 months to live if he continued to use alcohol and drugs. After getting sober, he returned to his education and earned a degree, then a doctorate, in psychology. He then went on to write and teach the largest master 's-level course in Addiction in the UK.
