This is really intended for people in the Kentucky County where I grew up .

This past weekend I kind of stumbled into a treasure that my mom had left behind when she could not attend our high school basketball games . She would record them onto cassette tapes and I happened to find about three or four of these cassette tapes and I thought , hmm , I'm going to take a listen and I'm just going to post it for the people in my home county who might want to listen . In . This particular tape is the final game that McQuarrie County High School would ever play as a basketball team . You see , in the fall of 1978 , the two high schools in my county Pine Aude High School and McQuarrie County High School would consolidate into a brand new school . Just so happens that I was part of that first graduating class of McQuarrie Central High School , as well as my wife Linda , which is where we met Story for another time . This basketball game is the opening game of the 47th District Basketball Tournament in the state of Kentucky . The game would find Pinot taking on McQuarrie County . These two schools were rival schools and they did not play each other during the season . Often they would find themselves matched up in the tournament . They had met the previous year in the opening round of the tournament and Pinot had lost . Pinot was really looking for a comeback game . They had a brand new coach that year and again , it would be their final year as a high school . I have really great memories of the names that I heard on this cassette tape .

When you grow up in a small town , you pretty much know everybody and everybody knows you . As you can imagine , there's positives and negatives to that . Of course . If I stepped out of line and somebody saw me , they would be quick into the grocery store and they'd say Wilma , danny's riding that motorcycle too fast . But growing up in a small town , it's a place where people look out for each other . It's a place where people take care of each other . Churches were packed . There were businesses on every corner , seems like this is a game from the winter of 1978 , guessing it was played around the end of February , maybe early March .

If you don't know anything about Kentucky basketball , it's divided into 16 regions . It doesn't matter if you're a big school , little school , you may end up in what's called the Sweet 16 Basketball Tournament , which has been played in Rupp Arena since 1979 . In mid-March it brings the 16 best teams from the state together to play the final tournament of the season . I do hope you enjoy this episode . First of all , let's go down to Macquarie County Indians , who will be considered the visiting team tonight . We're coming into the ballgame once again with a record of 12-8 .
