How to Channel Resilience to Fuel Your Business with Em (Minisode) - Podcast Transcript
Emily Merrell
Hey guys, I am here. I am sneaking in a podcast Well, Lex is on a very much needed vacation. Over at ReadySet. Coach, we're very pro vacations pro taking time off. So what's amazing about having a co founder is she's able to take a vacation, and I'm able to run a ReadySet coach, session and then vice versa. I'm going to New York in a few weeks, and she'll be able to run the session, so I can have an enjoy that time in New York City in New York City, oh, find yourself a good co founder if you do end up deciding to find a co founder. But that's a whole nother story, I think we'll have to do a podcast on just what it meant to find the perfect co founder. And it was definitely something that neither neither Lexie nor I were ever looking for or envisioning in our lives, we both agreed that we didn't want go founders and our already existing businesses. So Ready Set coach was definitely a unique opportunity for both of us. But in talking about vacation, today, I'm going to talk to you about finding resilience in your business. And I'm inspired by this episode, just talking to our cohort that I just got off of, I think it's been an entrepreneur, first and foremost is one of the most ambitious things that you can do in your life. It is not for the for the week, it is not for the individual, that is the faint of heart or the person that wants to give in very easily. It's definitely for someone that has to have a lot of trust in themselves in their own capabilities. And I just wanted to share my own personal experience of having to really, really dig deep to find resilience in my business and pull myself myself off of looking@indeed.com and looking for jobs. And sometimes just staring at yourself in your inbox and refreshing it and hoping you get clients. And just knowing that there are seasons of your business. And there are going to be moments in your business that are so exhilarating that you could never even envision a bad day. And then you're gonna have days where it feels like all you're feeling is not an end knocked down over and over and over. Be it feedback from a client, be it someone telling you they didn't like your event, someone. People love feedback, they love giving you feedback, especially unsolicited, because you are a business. I've had, oh, gosh, I've I feel like I've had the whole gamut in terms of my business from people, you know, telling me they weren't, they didn't like their matches, or they didn't like the speaker or the venue. Or I've had clients who've said that they haven't found didn't get anything out of working together. And it's, it's hard. It's hard when you hear this feedback, because you just want to delete everything that you've ever put out into the into the world. And click start over if you can. But it's also important to have these moments because it's these moments of resilience, that are TSYS moments where you can tap into and find your resilience. So I'm gonna give you a little bit of a story, first and foremost, in 2020, no, sorry, 2019. It was my dumpster fire a year. And I've I've referenced it before, but 2020 We had an apartment fire where we pretty much lost everything. And you know, in the weekend, I had to find a new place for our family. You know, file insurance claims all all of these things while running a business. And my motto was one in motion stay in motion. So I was able to stay in motion time and time again. And then later that year, I ended up having another fire where we were evacuated. 30 minutes before our wedding because of Sonoma fires. And again, there was moments where I was like, shit, like, are we even supposed to get married? What is this what's happening? And both of those moments really were transformative for me because it my community stepped up. And my community
Emily Merrell
really showed me the power of what I did. It really reinforced what I had created. My community showed up for me in gift cards they showed up for me and messages sent they showed up for me at the wedding by knocking on neighbors doors and asking for chairs as we set up our new venue space. And I'm telling you this story because sometimes it can feel like you are doing something that is very thankless and you only hear the negative feedback but when in reality when the time of course Asus, your, your purpose should shine through. And that's what happened to me. So I want to talk to you about how you can find resilience in your business, especially when you are feeling low, low, low, and ways to kind of re inspire and re spark that something that is your connection with your business. So first and foremost, make a self love love list. So if this feels super nerdy or Woo, great run with it. Basically, what you need to do is, for the next 15 minutes, pause this episode, and just write for 15 minutes straight, all of the things that you love about yourself, from your smile to the way your eyelashes, bat, to the way that you make people feel to the hugs that you give to the color of your nail polish, whatever it is just make a self love list, and remind yourself of all the incredible qualities that you have in your life. Okay, great. So once you've done that, the next thing I want you to do is I want you to write a list of all of your accomplishments. So give yourself another 15 minutes and write down everything you've accomplished. Because as individuals, as entrepreneurs, as women, we suck at taking inventory of what we've accomplished. So it could be everything from graduating, graduating high school, graduating college, having a baby, moving across country, starting a business, figuring out how to register your domain, all of those things, anything that you think is an accomplishment, write down, it could be getting your first client, it could be putting an offer out there. And not even having your first clients but but creating the offer and putting yourself in a vulnerable position. So give yourself about 15 minutes to take inventory of all these incredible accomplishments that you've had. And it doesn't have to be within this this past year, it can be within the last few years. So in addition to that, I want you to take inventory of the people that are your cheer squad, who are the people that you surround yourself with that make you feel instantaneously better. So I want you to take about, again, 15 minutes is my theme today. 15 minutes just to write down the people that you surround yourself with that make you feel really ignited, really loved really held and supported. I want you to keep this list in a special place. Especially when the moments come that you feel a little bit down, know that you can turn to those people on your list. And it can be a voice note, it could be a text message and you know that they are there for the pick me up. And we all have those friends that are incredible close friends that are the exact opposite of that those are the those are the like Naked Truth, friends, you want to table those friends for another day. So these are the friends that like whenever you get on the phone with them. If your energy is at like a zero, they bring you to pretty much 100. And then lastly, I want you to just embrace the moment and embrace your feelings and how you're feeling. If you're feeling sucky about your business, or if you're feeling like it's not where you want to be. Dig deeper into why? Why is this making you feel this way. Maybe you've been in business for four months, and you expected more revenue by now. Or maybe you felt like you wanted more support from your friends. Take inventory of all the feelings that you're having. And then go through that list again, and see if you can write out a solution. So like I'm feeling upset, for example,
Emily Merrell
I'm feeling upset because I should be further along than where I thought I would be at this point. And then what are steps that you could do to get to make you feel like you're further along? Maybe you realize you've only posted in like to Facebook groups? Could you be pitching yourself a little bit more as a speaker? Or can you be pitching yourself more on podcasts? How could you feel more further along. So write down actionable steps you can take to actually make you feel further along. And that's all I've got for you today. But I just want to remind you that entrepreneurship is a wild wild ride. You are incredible person doing what you are doing and trust the process. Half of our half of our brain is so impatient, and we want things to happen immediately. But know that if you continue believing and you continue putting it out in the universe, that you're more likely to get it than if you play small and don't share it with anyone else. That's all I have for you today. Thanks for tuning in. And we'll see you the next time on the ReadySet coach podcast.
