A new hard rock band out of Switzerland shows up with a simple promise: no tributes, no surrender, just original songs that belong on big stages. We sit down with Midnight Tango and talk about why they’re hungry to bring their sound to the United States, from New York clubs to motorcycle rallies and full scale rock festivals. If you’ve ever wondered whether modern hard rock still has that dangerous, fun, loud edge, this conversation answers it in real time.

We get into the state of the live scene across Europe and the US, the pressure to play it safe, and why the band thinks originality matters more than ever especially with AI and copy paste culture creeping into music. Then we go deep on the band’s “magic”: how Serge locks into JJ’s demos with fast lyric writing, how Dan joins to build the live lineup, and why the right mix of personalities can turn songs into something bigger than the sum of the parts.

The gearhead side of recording gets its due too. You’ll hear how connections through Chris Slade lead to Simon Wright getting involved, how COVID shifts plans from touring to recording, and why they take the mixing stage seriously, taking the project to Vancouver to work with legendary mixer Mike Fraser. We also talk singles like “Gang Bang Boogie”, the upcoming release plan, and the album title Last Dance.

If you love hard rock, rock festivals, big drums, and the human side of building a band, hit play, share this with a friend who misses real rock, and subscribe plus leave a review so more listeners can find the show.

Welcome to another edition of the Motorcycle Mayhem Radio Podcast, hosted by Johnny Rizto, where we talk about everything motorcycle, from tips on safe riding to apparel and accessories, to where the next events are and everything in between. So, let's mount up and drive. Hey Johnny, where are we going this time?

SPEAKER_03

What's up, everybody? So I am here now with this band right out of Switzerland, an awesome band out of Switzerland, right? Called Midnight Tango. I got these guys on the show

Welcome And Meet Midnight Tango

SPEAKER_03

with me right now, right? Awesome band. And we're trying to get them. I want to get them to the United States. I'd love to see these guys play in New York or play at a bike festival, a motorcycle rally, or someplace. That would be awesome. So let's start out with uh JJ Boszi. What's up, JJ? Hello, Johnny. How are you doing? How are you doing, man?

SPEAKER_02

I'm fine, I'm fine, I'm fine here in Switzerland. Finally, it's the summertime comes so good. Festivals, summer festivals, and uh a lot of things to do outdoors.

SPEAKER_03

Now, do you guys have a lot of outdoor events over there? I'm sure you're sure like the rock festivals over where you are are a lot better than where I am. That's what I'm guessing.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, there, yeah, that there is there is a lot of a lot of festival here in Europe going on. Now is the Sweden uh festival, rock festival. Uh going on.

SPEAKER_04

There is one in Barcelona and Germany, all the real the the gross pop, the gross pop, and and but listen, there there's gonna be there's

Europe Rock Festivals And US Scene

SPEAKER_04

there's gonna be a change going on because all the American bands are going to fucking gross pulp and and the the the the situation in the world is music is it it's it's like uh nobody knows what they're doing anymore. Um but but but the situation is there are a lot of festivals in Europe right now. But what the hell is going on in in in in in the United States, said Johnny?

SPEAKER_03

The NSA is going crazy right now. I don't know what's going on here, but in the rock world, you know, we have some festivals here. I've been to a bunch of them. I've been in Chicago, I've been in Ohio, I've been a whole bunch of them, man. And I hear I always heard a lot of stories that even though we had some kick-ass rock festivals here, but the ones over in the UK and stuff like that and in Europe, they said you never experienced a rock festival until you went to one in Europe. That's what I'm getting at right now, right? Okay. So all right, so wait, let's just say hi.

SPEAKER_04

Let's just say hi to but but but never but never surrender with the Mythatango. We try to prove the world that there's still some original stuff going on, and we and we will never we will never surrender because there's too much tribute, uh also in the United States, but with Mythatango, we try to prove that we that that you have to you have to be cultural, you have to

Originality, Tributes, And AI Worries

SPEAKER_04

be you have to always have to be have to you have to sort it out with your life and try to be real. You have to be creative, and now and nowadays, nowadays everyone is is is is is everyone fucks their life up because it's insane what's going on. Nobody is real anymore. You know what?

SPEAKER_03

With AI too, with AI stuff, I got you know people, Johnny. There you go. There you go. AI yeah, messes a lot of things up too. When you only got these original bands out there that are really working hard for what they do, you know what I'm saying?

SPEAKER_04

I'm sorry to answer Johnny, but there's one band who gets to do right, and that is Midnight Tango.

SPEAKER_03

There you go. Midnight Midnight Tango, everybody. So let's say hi to Dan real fast. What's up, Dan? You've been quiet over there.

SPEAKER_01

He's deaf on one side. Hello, yes. Um we must be uh we need uh some promotion for the new band.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, but listen, listen, he needs promotion. He's the one who takes it, he takes real care about the serious side. That's why this this band, Mr. Tango, is amazing. And the wild one, JJ is the creator, and then is the man, and he will and he will start talking, talk, start talking to you. Okay, how are you doing? But yeah, so who who wants to who wants to talk?

SPEAKER_02

Dan, okay, maybe I can tell a little bit of a story. No, no, no, no.

SPEAKER_04

Then the man was talking. Give get the man a chance. Go ahead, Dan.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, yeah. Uh for me, um, for me, uh joined the band uh one year ago for uh for create uh the live band with uh with the new album. Right. And uh and uh it's a new uh exciting experience.

SPEAKER_03

How long have the band been together for?

SPEAKER_01

Because I play

Building The Band And Debut Gig

SPEAKER_01

uh with three three three super super guys, three three super musicians.

SPEAKER_02

You can answer that question, please. Yeah, that's it's the band is one year old. We started our debut gig at the Puri Life Festival here in Switzerland and uh on Lakeside, alongside with uh Nazareth and my friend from uh Ticino. Yeah, it was in Nazareth great band, okay? We already played together, and uh we we fine-tuned uh the production of the album from uh from now eight months, and it will finally be released and uh this year. The first single is out, getting back.

SPEAKER_04

But but JJ, if I cannot interrupt you, Johnny, listen to me. I'm from Holland, but the music, the hard rock feeling in the in the Netherlands is is dead. And and it the the music business it's not about the music business, but it's about the real the hard rock side of things. And JJ and he invited me to join his band and to and to work on his album. But the difference between the Netherlands and Switzerland, it's amazing. We had a debut gig and it was it was amazing. Wow. Yeah, we still have it bangers, that's what it will say. Yeah, yeah, that's that's what I'm saying.

SPEAKER_03

So let me ask you guys a question.

SPEAKER_04

So there's a side to the story of the situation is in in in in in in in uh in in in the USA. Right. But we are we are all trying to do our best. And in Switzerland, we had a great gig last year, right? And um that that's what that's when I thought this this band is fucking amazing.

SPEAKER_03

I had a couple of your songs, you guys rock, man. I'm gonna be playing a song or two doing this as well. But let me ask you a question. So hold on. So you guys got Simon Wright involved. Tell me about that. Tell me how you got Simon Wright involved.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, because uh I used to play with uh for five years I played with Chris Slade in this Chris Slade Steel Circle band. That was a band composed by uh some some uh famous musician. We had Gary Kelly from Alice Cooper, who's now with Night Ranger, who was with Rat that he's with Black Star Writers now, and uh Dutch guy called uh Leon

Simon Wright Connection And COVID Recording

SPEAKER_02

Howie from uh the band Vengeance was leading, and me on the other guitar. So we for five years we toured Europe and I Chris Late uh got back with ACDC for the rock or bus store, so uh we stopped the band and I started writing songs, and uh, when uh I had finished all my songs, I took my time to very focus on the on the I don't know, on the harmonies and and changing parts every time. So I took my time and in 2020 20 20 uh uh eighteen I called Simon Wright because uh Chris was busy with ACDC to do another ACDC cover band here in Europe. Oh yeah, he was in terrace and and also uh with Carrie Kelly on the other guitar. Sweet we we yeah, we we build this up and then comes uh COVID 19, so uh the lockdown. So the reason why uh I had those songs, and I said to Simon and the guy, why don't we record that instead of playing live? Right, right. Agree, and we we start recording the songs from uh 1920, but it took time, you know, because they were in between gigs and afterwards, so uh so the production was finished about 2022, two years, took two years to to finish this album, right? And then um I because I I wrote the song and I sent the songs to Kerry Kelly, who was recording Simon's tramps at his home studio, right? And then uh I did uh the remix for the the vocal recording in in Holland, and uh it took also two years to finish it, and then we go to Vancouver to mix it by Mike Fraser. So we hook up with uh with Simon Wright, was back in 2018 to do another ACDC cover band.

SPEAKER_03

That's awesome. So what are you still playing with him at all now?

SPEAKER_02

Or yeah, no, he after uh after he quit the fine tour was finished with ACDC. He did his band uh Chris Late Time Line with all um new musicians from there and he's celebrating his his year in um with Tom Jones, with Manfred Mans, with Gary Moore, David Gilmore, with all of the all the stars in ACDC, of course.

SPEAKER_03

Right. Well that's awesome, man. It's great that you have that. And uh the album now, guys, the album is out now, right?

SPEAKER_02

Or not yet? No, the album is not out yet. We we are we have a single out, Gang Bang Boogie, that will be another one during the end of June, beginning of July, and another one in October. And the album will be released around uh October, November.

SPEAKER_03

So the uh the um did the the album is called uh bang bang. What was that again?

SPEAKER_02

The single. This is the single gang bang boogie.

SPEAKER_03

Gang bang boogie, and there's a we have a video on that, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we have a clip.

SPEAKER_03

All right, so we're gonna put a video right now. Yeah, you guys sit right there, we'll be right back.

SPEAKER_02

Gang bang boogie.

SPEAKER_03

We'll be right back right after this. Oh, these guys are rocking with me. Hello.

SPEAKER_01

Hello, Leo.

SPEAKER_03

Uh oh, there we go. There he is. Dan wants to say hi to Dawn. Hi, Dawn, right? Say hi to Dawn, Dan. I think we're on a delay with Dan. Can you hear me, Dan?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I'm there.

SPEAKER_03

Say hi to Dawn.

SPEAKER_01

I'm going fine. I'm going fine. So sorry, sorry, I don't understand. I'm going really fine. Yes. I'm really proud to really proud to speak with you and uh Johnny.

Serge On Lyrics, Influence, And Magic

SPEAKER_03

I know I talk too fast. I talk very fast. And you know hi too. Dan Dan doesn't understand English way too good or speak it, but I talk way too fast. So I gotta slow it down right now.

SPEAKER_01

It's okay, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Is this better? Can you understand me? Because uh I understand with the New York accent, the shitty voice that I have, right?

SPEAKER_04

So now I'm from the Netherlands and I play in a Swiss band and they're talking French all the fucking time.

SPEAKER_03

So Sturge, Sturge, you're from Harlem, right?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, okay. Let's start the interview. We're in Harlem, Serge. Um, I'm from Rotterdam.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, so let's make it perfectly clear. Sturge is not from Harlem, New York, just so we know.

SPEAKER_04

Okay, he's in Harlem, UK. But the Dutch, the Dutch, they they took over. That's why it's called New York. Oh no, it's New Amsterdam.

SPEAKER_03

New Amsterdam. That's a party place, my way. That's a party place. Okay, place for a band. Let's go real. Uh let's talk about the band, please. Okay. Who wants to get who wants to start talking about the band?

SPEAKER_04

Start Serge. I want to talk about the band.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, no, Serge.

SPEAKER_04

Go ahead. Okay. I was invited to to mix and to to uh uh JJ contacted me. Um he needed a singer, and I and I I was in my own band, Rebel Stars called, and I did some tours with um with Ace Really, I did support for Ace Freely for Paul Gilbert. And JJ contacted me. Um how do you feel about um trying to try to try to compose and try to uh JJ had a had a he sent me some demos and it was fucking amazing. And JJ asked me, can you do some vocals? Can can you do do uh can you do some lyrics for me? And within within weeks, within weeks, I within two weeks, I had I had all the 10 songs. It was like magic. It was like magic. I heard the song from JJ, and I didn't have to do anything. I sang it in like a like a motherfucker. Wow. That's why it's called magic. I didn't need anything. He had some guidelines, but but I uh but when I'm inspired when I'm inspired, you know, this is this is the band that I want to be in, you know?

SPEAKER_03

Right, where do you now where do you get your little influ influences from? Sorry? Where do you get your influences from? Who do you grow up singing with?

SPEAKER_04

I was gonna tell you kid Kiss Iron Maiden Metallica, Montecrew. There you go.

SPEAKER_03

There you go, Iron Maiden.

SPEAKER_04

Iron Maiden, very big in the UK, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I don't give a fuck. I don't give a fuck. Word why? Well why yeah? JJ, J JJ sent me some demos. Hey sirs, I know that you're in Rebel Star. That's my own band in the Netherlands. And JJ uh he told me, can you can we try to uh can we try to have something going on? And he and JJ asked me, can you put some lyrics or can you help us? And I heard the songs, and it was like, motherfucker, this is the best band I ever I ever want to be in. Right. And now look at you guys. That is the real deal. He sent me some demos, and with within within one day, I had three I had three songs down. Excellent. It was like like three songs.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, it was amazing.

SPEAKER_03

Well, sometimes you know what you you can play in bands your whole life, but when you get into a a put a band that clicks like a click, like it does, then you know you got something. And then it's a special Johnny.

SPEAKER_04

Thank you very Johnny, thank you very much. It's all about fucking magic. Right, all magic, all magic. All the great magic we we we all we all know in our lives kids, it's about magic. And that'll come in too. And then when when JJ he sent me the he said he sent me the demos, I was like, listen up, brother. I will send you, but in three days, I will get you three songs down. Wow. And I did it. That's awesome. The first three songs of our new new record, it was fucking I did it. And I didn't know what was going on. I I didn't need I didn't need any inspiration. That's that's that is called magic. He sent me the he sent me the demos within three days. I sent the first three songs. It was amazing. Yeah, but yeah, but but listen, listen, listen, listen to our mechanism.

SPEAKER_03

What's our first we all have women in our lives? We all we all have women in our lives. That's it.

SPEAKER_04

But listen, Johnny, listen, Jenny, I'm sorry. Johnny, Johnny, Johnny. I'm here. What watch our first video clip that matches everything. It it's it's it is S and D C. But it it's about having fun, it's about uh being in a band. And the the most important, the most important stuff you want to do, you want to create with a band, is have a great, great song, have a great clip. And and and and and you you you will be the judge. We made an amazing first clip. You can see that we're we are having fun. And you know you know what it is, Johnny. When when I'm I'm Dutch, but if you if you go if you're gonna play if you're gonna play if you're gonna play if you're gonna play in a in in another country's band, then that is that is the most and most major thing you you're gonna do.

SPEAKER_02

Right. Exactly between vibes, between human beings, you know, between between people. So uh and and as you said before, the first time we played together, so we we knew we had something special going on. And right and and with the song I wrote also that click immediately, Serge who is warm and and powerful voice fits perfectly the songs uh the music I wrote.

SPEAKER_03

Right. That that that's awesome when you when you write something and you don't know how it's gonna come out, and then when you hear it for the first time, you're like, holy shit.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah, yes, oh yeah, yes, we got it, we got something here.

SPEAKER_03

That's it, that's a hit in the face, you know. That's a hit in the face. Exactly.

SPEAKER_01

And you know, like I was telling you before it was um it was a good vibration.

SPEAKER_03

Exactly. That's the whole thing, a good vibration. And like I was telling you before, JJ, I was like, I'm in a band, I was in a band myself that just got signed from 36 years ago. A band that was again 36 years ago we got signed.

SPEAKER_02

But we're not too old, it's never too old.

SPEAKER_03

You're never too old. And you know what? I understand when we were talking about a click, because these guys have been part of my life for 36 years, and they still are part of my life today. We're starting a second album, and that stuff just clicked, and there's nothing I ever did after that or before that has ever compared to what we did. So, if and that's for everybody in the band. So when we get together now, it's just it's an amazing feeling, you know what I'm saying?

SPEAKER_02

I know where you guys are coming from, which is awesome because you got something special, right? You showed up before some pictures that was me back in 1989 and the the the the Liberty Island. I'll put it up again. What do you got there? Yeah, back in '89 with uh band for also a Swiss band from Geneva called Spencer. They're still rocking, and uh and uh and this is this is Chris Slade rehearsal. Okay, with uh you have Chris Lake behind the blades, the the drums on his left. There is Kerry Kelly, Robbie Crane on the right, an engineer, some engineers, and the singer, the guy from uh from Holland too, Holland uh Netherland. Okay, uh Leon. We got here, and here was I think that was at the Cat Club. Do you remember the Cat Club? Yes, I do. Yes, that was for a release of uh the Japanese band called Easy Yo back in time, back in 1989. Wow I had uh fuzzy hair, and this is the past from um for the show, the tour with uh Chris Slate. And this is legendary here, and and we played the CBGB also. That's big and huge, yeah. And and then a lot, a lot of club with we hit the the East Coast from uh from Quebec to to Florida. Wow, did like 60 shows and uh yeah, wild nights, and uh we met amazing people and uh yeah, rock and roll dream.

SPEAKER_03

There you go. Dan, you want to eat anything then?

SPEAKER_01

I don't have to play with Chris uh Slade, but uh I play with Gigi, Serge, and Chris. No. This is this is the same same but different.

SPEAKER_02

Why? I forgot to tell you, Johnny. I'm back you know the the drummer the drummer uh that that you see in New York, that's the drum, the midnight tangles drummer, actual drummer. Okay, I called him I called him back for this his this project because he's the one who can swing the hi-hat, as you know, a kind of Phil Rod, like like you guys said, uh English drummer. Right, right, right. The hi-hat. What like Simon, like uh like Phil Rudd, like Chris Slade, also. So he has the thing to play to play that that swinging bit that that makes you tap your feet and and move your body. Nice, nice. So enjoying the music.

SPEAKER_03

Exactly. What I just do here hit the wrong button. Um, we lost him again. Here he is.

SPEAKER_02

Surge is back. I'm back. You're always somewhere else. I'm always with you. He may he wants to sell his house. That's the reason why he moves in every uh in everyone.

SPEAKER_01

He changed the rooms.

unknown

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_03

All right, so tell me about the album, guys. Um, yeah, so how many songs you wanted?

SPEAKER_02

There's 11 songs.

SPEAKER_03

Eleven songs.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and it was mixed uh in Vancouver, uh, Canada by uh the amazing Mike Fraser.

SPEAKER_04

I'm gonna do it.

SPEAKER_02

Uh A C D C Metallica, Irasmith. Right, nice. No, the big names, Marle Crude, and all the big

Mixing Last Dance With Mike Fraser

SPEAKER_02

at little at little mountain studio in uh right two two two blocks away from where we were. Now it's Armory Studio. That's his uh Bruce Verburn studio he built up. And uh Mike is still keeps on on working there in uh in honor of uh can you guys hear me? Yes, and uh uh yeah, and that was amazing uh mixing this with him, so we're friends forever, you know.

SPEAKER_03

See that that's one of the main pieces of the mix. I don't care what kind of album you have out. If it ain't mixed good, it ain't gonna sound good. So the mixing is very important.

SPEAKER_02

We needed to find uh personal songs that fits the songs and the the band spirit also, right? And uh, I think that was the guy who goes to to to make it to make it because uh I I try to mix a little bit, but I'm not as good as anybody else. That's a talent at the beginning. And and I I I put some reverb of some effect on on the instruments, and then he puts everything down in the go straight to straight to the point to find the the the instrument sound, you know.

SPEAKER_03

Right, right, right. Very organic, okay, an organic.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, but but I have to say, but punching and roll like like like nobody's doing.

SPEAKER_03

Well, hold on. We still want to say something.

SPEAKER_04

Um I I I got the the demos, but there there weren't demos. It was already uh very good to record it.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_04

So so when JJ asked me to to to put some lyrics and to to put some demo focus on it, I I I thought to myself, this is already that good. There's no there's no denying that this is gonna be a great recording and a great fucking record.

SPEAKER_03

I'm sure. Yeah, that's the whole thing right there, man. And that's just uh that's another piece of the puzzle right there, right? Yeah, exactly. Exactly. So Danny, anything you wanna say then?

SPEAKER_01

Yes. Uh what can I say? Sorry, God can I say I uh like uh like I say like I said before, I I uh I re I uh I come with the band one year ago and uh uh I discovered uh some super musician. And uh the the feeling uh it's okay uh right now and uh we must first uh rehearsal and we push it uh push it to the

Brotherhood, Legacy, And Farewell

SPEAKER_01

the the song and we we constat that it's uh it's uh it's match. That's much, it's matching for yeah, yeah. It's matching for uh for rock and roll.

SPEAKER_04

Right. Yeah, uh yeah uh Johnny, listen to me. I'm I'm from the Netherlands and and and they they asked me for a Swiss band. But uh yeah, JJ is an amazing guy. He he he's the one that produces all the songs, he created all the songs. We're amazing, amazing, we had magic, and uh it's music is is collaboration between collaborating and and and trying to to to to create some lyrics and to sing it, and that this is the best part about uh playing music because then the man is a bass player, but I never I never met a a nicer guy than the man. Or I don't give a soul clicking that that that's that that's that is the message. That is the message, Johnny. It's I'm a kiss fan, everyone's a listen fan, but in the end, it's all about creating music, it's all all about creating uh creating something and doing with our lives and and and meeting the best people you can.

SPEAKER_02

So the thing is that our our souls meet thank you, Sergeant. Yeah, it's good music. So the music is kind of an extension. Collaboration, everything together, yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

It's an extension of a friendship, exactly.

SPEAKER_03

That's a big important part of a successful man and having a good relationship with everybody, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, if you greet with the people, then you can create something great. You just create a Johnny.

SPEAKER_04

Johnny, you know what it is? We we all are trying to to get the the the the the the the the the we're all trying to create something iron maiden those guys in their 20s, they have all their life being their own fucking rock star. And we're all trying to be we all trying to be a fucking rock star, right? But you but you know what we all we all chasing the brethren, you know what I'm saying? Right, but but but in the end, yeah, maybe we're not gonna be a huge rock star, but we all we I I I mean I I we don't care about rock stars, we just want to be there there. You go, we all try to be make great music and to make worldwide people happiness.

SPEAKER_02

There you go. There you go, there you go. That's the bottom line.

SPEAKER_03

You all be legends, yeah. You will be legends, I think, and you'll have a legacy when we're far and gone, right? Yeah, and you'll be remembered as having these great songs, you know what I mean?

SPEAKER_02

So, yeah, exactly. That's it.

SPEAKER_03

But the album sounds great, and um, what's the album what's the album called? Thank you. Gang Bang Boogie. That's the album called Gang Bang Boogie?

SPEAKER_02

No. No, the album is called the single is called called Gang of the Boogie. But the single is Gang Bang Boogie.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, the single is gangbang. The album's called Less Dance.

SPEAKER_03

SPEAKER_04

So I wish you guys but don't you wanna roll a dice or do you wanna take a less dance with your media?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that's true. You got a point there.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, go to Sin City and have a fun party.

SPEAKER_03

There you go. Well, I want to wish you guys the best of luck with this album, man. I think it's gonna kick ass. I can't wait to get my copy. My autograph copy, I'm gonna get.
