John & Josh Discuss Year Round Whitetail Deer Scrapes. You can use Branch Butter year round and be sure to use lures that DO NOT contain Breeding elements in them.

SPEAKER_01

Welcome back, everybody, to another episode of the Black Widow Deer Lords podcast. I'm John and I've got Josh Mr. Mullins. Mr. Mullins, yeah. There you go. So we are going to talk a little bit about scrapes today.

SPEAKER_00

You man. I enjoy running scrapes year-round. Yeah. That's like a big, big thing now with uh people starting to realize that scrapes are a very good pattern indicator for deer early season all the way through.

SPEAKER_01

It's year round. So and that's I think the biggest thing is just the education of it. That's been the tough thing because everybody thought it was just like a deer season. Yeah. You know, they don't you don't realize like they actually use you know this uh communication behavior year round. It's not a uh just a deer season or a rut thing.

SPEAKER_00

A lot of people think it's a rut thing. I know. It's you know, which deer is one of the most communal animals that you'll find. I mean, they all the time, you know, licking on each other and stuff, and they're it's just their way of being able to post, hey, I'm here, kind of deal with the with the early season type straight scrapes and stuff. So absolutely.

SPEAKER_01

Well, and then for those that don't know, what what was the best way you would describe what what exactly is a scrape?

SPEAKER_00

It's a calling calling sign. I mean, it's something that's used by multiple deer throughout the entire season and throughout the entire year that says, Hey, I'm here, you know, um, whether it be, you know, just kind of communal early season or whether you're trying to, you know, say, hey, I'm ready, I'm here to breed. Yeah. You know, testosterone when the bucks is gone and estrus and the dogs and stuff. So that's really where a lot of people think of scrapes is just that. You don't see them on the ground, but you would, you know, don't really think about early season a lot of people hadn't, which it's starting, like I said, it's starting to take hold.

SPEAKER_01

So it's kind of like uh all the dogs in the neighborhood peeing on a telephone pole or a fire hydrant. You know, they're just letting each other know who's who, who's there, right? So visually, you know, what a scrape is, you guys will see uh it'll be generally like a you know licking branch, overhanging branch, and you'll see like this little round or in a V-shape kicked out area. And uh, you know, if you're lucky enough, at times you'll you'll see a wet spot in the middle of it, depending on how how close you were to like walking in on one after they had finished working it. But visually, usually tree lines, saddles, road beds, you know, places where deer like to travel, you can generally find them. And uh, and visually, like I said, when you you'll see them, you know, kind of just like a signpost, like where where's a lot of traffic of deer coming through, you'll generally find either you have your community scrapes or you'll have your scrapes that are made by you know individual bucks.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I know that like a lot of times we have at home where it's a steep, and you've been there, you understand that you'll have three, four ridges that run in together, and that usually all the three trails are coming to one. So at that point, that's usually where they're you know marking things because all of them are kind of coming together at that point at that time. So it again lets them know, you know, hey, we're here, what are you doing? So, you know, just a call sign.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, sure is. And I just uh I guess it just just for them to be able to to let each other know who's who, who's in the area, and uh, and I think that is uh a I guess a behavior that we can easily kind of tap into, you know, in hunting wise. And that's where Blackwood Deer Lores has focused on the scrape, and it's one of the companies on the forefront of that, I would say. I mean, absolutely. Because if you look at all your your different companies, you know, and we're and we're not picking on anybody in particular, but if you've noticed, Blackwood Deer Lores is the only company that really is focused on the scrape for co close to 30 years now.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

All right, every and and let's not let's not you know say that there's nobody using sense. Absolutely. There's been you know, Bucksense, Dose, all the companies have used urines and attractants over the years, but Blackwood Deer Lore's focused primarily on the scrape.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, with uh you know, introduction of a branch butter, you know, the preorbital forehead gland, and you know, they've got the interdigital snap caps now and the tarsal gland, which again, that's going to be pushed over into the rut more so. But uh I mean 27 years ago, scrape master.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean scrape master, the first, the first real true sc I would say scrape product. Yeah. Yeah, because that was designed as it's your esteris, it's your dough urine, it's your buck urine with the elevated levels of testosterone in it, and it is interdigital gland, tarsal, everything that is found in a scrape was scrape master, and that was developed 27 years ago in the original lineup of Black Widow Deer Lores. You know, and that's uh that's that's uh many, many moons ago. That's crazy. Just you know, you sit and think about it, you know, 27 years. Yeah, because that's not this is not uh new to Black Widow now. Now a lot of the companies have been the scrape has been the focus. I will say, yeah, every single scent company has now released some sort of scrape product, you know. But again, we're we've been at the forefront of this, you know, since the the the inception, honestly, of Blackwood Deer Lordship. I mean, you know, and then everything's been focused on that. You know, the uh like like you were saying, branch butter, uh the interdigital gland snap caps, the tarsal gland snap caps, um, you know, Scrape Master uh itself, you know, you can actually get it in, you know, assemble it if you would. But it is, you know, Scrape Master is a mix of what you would say your hot and ready, your dominator, plus the extra, you know, tarsal and interdigital. Yeah. You know, so the the products themselves have been in our lineup for years, and uh, and it's something that the owner knew that is a point that you can communicate and draw more deer to create more frequency in your hunting area, which in turn gives you more opportunity.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I mean, you know, you you look at the realism side of anything. I mean, you know, you put something out that may not be kind of forefront uh of what would actually be left by deer. So, I mean, you know, you take a uh a buck, you know, a tarsa, the inner digital buck and the dough both, and then the dough urine and stuff, it is uh something that kind of puts the whole picture together. You know, you're you're painting a picture, which is obviously what a scrape is doing anyway. You're painting a picture of what's going on in the area at that time, who's there and and what they're doing. So, you know, anytime you can put a a picture together as far as, you know, again, snap caps, you know, the tarsal, the interdigital, the branch butter. I mean, you know, you take the preordal and forehead glands, I mean, that's something that is I mean, it's pivotal to to a uh lick and branch. I mean, you know, it's you you just I mean, I can remember growing up before it that was even a thought. I mean, nobody ever thought about that. So, I mean, knowing I've done it, I'm sure everybody in the world's done it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and I think the interdigital, honestly, is the only people that I could think of that used it were uh blood tracking dogs. Yeah. For years I saw that their their focus was on the interdigital until you know I met Andy, and Andy, you know, said, hey, the interdigital is like their fingerprint. Yep. And, you know, essentially what's happening when you use Blackwood Deer Lord products in the scrapes, you are introducing a foreign deer, a strange deer, right? That interdigital, those urines, those pre-orbital, that's coming from a different animal than their basically it's a new kid on a block. It's a new buck, it's a new person. So that that piques their curiosity. In turn, they're gonna go to that you know street corner, they're gonna go a couple times and say, Hey, who's this new kid? Yeah, we're gonna see if he's out riding his bike today or something. I gotta find out who this new guy is, right? So the same as a buck. Like they they're gonna come by their scrape, they're gonna come check it out more often. So instead of once every few days, it might be once every other day, then once a day, and then as it gets closer to the the rut, that's when the frequency really picks up because they said, Hey, we really got to figure out the pecking order. We gotta figure out who's the boss and who's gonna try to be, you know, who's the one that's gonna get all the ladies, right? So then you start seeing multiple times a day, daylight, things like that. So really just focusing on the scrape is oh yeah. I mean, that you know creates huge opportunities for you to, you know, be there when they're there.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah. I mean, you especially, as you said, when you get closer to the rut or into the rut, you know, it turns more territorial than curiosity. I mean, you know, you take a buck that um is got uh you know competition in the area, and he knows that there's competition in that area now, and it's just uh, you know, it turns into a a chess match at that moment to say, you know, hey, I got somebody here that's you know not supposed to be here in the you know territory.

SPEAKER_01

Potentially getting my girls you know, the the territ territorial side kind of takes over at that moment. So absolutely, yeah. That's uh you and you'll see like so the there's a difference too. So the difference on what you're using at what time of the year, oh yeah, too, right? So you know that and that that's the important part. I think you know it's a year-round behavior, but things do change, just like you said. Yeah, you know, so and right now, honestly, year-round, we're using branch butter. Yeah, that there's no breeding sense associated with that. That is your pre-orbital and your forehead gland. So that is uh, you know, everything associated with a licking branch is in branch butter. And that's a year-round floor. Oh yeah. You know, that as well as interdigital. Interdigital snap caps year-round.

SPEAKER_00

Branch butter, year-round. Yep. And it's like you mentioned with the scrape master and tarsal gland snaps. I mean, you know, you kind of shift your focus from those over to, you know, non-estrus and and uh, you know, non-buck urine that's got a tarsal in it, you know, like young buck, you know, that uh Blackwood has and uh straight dough. But you know, that that's something that you would kind of would start to use well before season starts, you know, summer months. I mean, like right now here it's June, and uh I get action uh you know on three cameras about every day. I mean, you know, with uh they're not as gonna be like uh aggressive, you know. It's not not nothing about that. It's it's just more or less come in, check it, you know. Hey, there's something here. Um we may meet them. You know, kind of it's not one of those, hey, there's somebody here, I want to meet him, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and it's and essentially like you said, young buck, it doesn't have any tarsal, it doesn't have any elevated levels of testosterone. It is collected from a two-year-old or younger. Now you have um your straight dough. Now straight dough has no estrus in it, so it is a non-breeding um lure, right? You know, there's no breeding elements to it. So if you were to take your young buck, your straight dough, and your inner digital gland snap cap, you would essentially be making a kind of uh what is it, like a scrape master but without the breeding. That's kind of what you're what you're doing. Now your scrape master has your hot and ready, which is your dough estrus, with um estrus, obviously. Then you got your dominator is your buck lore with you know the elevated levels of testosterone and your tarsal gland.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And then the interdigital is in there as well. So everything associated with scrape during the rut is your scrape master. Yes. Right.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. You know, and it's just like a lot of, you know, with scrapes, misconception, moving from the the summer, spring, and summer months with straight dough and young buck and and interdigital that you you kind of move into uh with like hot and ready, you know, not not really getting to the breeding side of it with the triple X or the V, but your doughs are starting to show, you know, signs of estrous, you know, early. I mean a lot of you know, when as soon as that velvet starts shedding off of a buck, I mean that testosterone level is starting to build. And you know, you've uh I mean I've seen fawns in March, you know, so that tells you that those does are getting bred early. Absolutely. So I mean it's something you know as you yeah, it's just September. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

As soon as you start seeing uh the velvet come off, like I said. You know, we're starting to use hot and ready. Um now hot and ready as you're ramping up estrus lore. Now your triple X's are standing. So you can start using your hot and ready in your scrapes. Um and I think dominator is the one thing that I say a dominator is is one that you kind of want to hold in your pack for a little bit.

SPEAKER_00

I hold it. I don't, you know, until mid-October. I don't really pull it out. Same way with Scrape Master. I don't do that. Absolutely.

SPEAKER_01

I just use the the young buck, you know, clear up until, you know, probably the beginning of October or so before it starts switching over. Because again, think about you know, the the velvet just came off, they're starting to build up, they're starting to get curious. And honestly, the tarsal gland until it starts getting saturated and urinated on several times before you really start getting that that potent. I mean, that's that I usually there's there's a little there's a little time I mean there's a little window in there, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Because I I usually don't even pull the tarsal snaps out until again October, I mean the interdigital and the branch butter, which again that's a given, that's year-round, but uh hot and ready, hot and vanilla. I mean, because I'm a huge fan of hot and vanilla. Oh yeah. So I mean, you know, those two are something that you can use. I mean, uh I guess it was three years ago I killed a buck that was with two does and was was checking and it was September the 13th. And uh it it was just random. I mean, you know, as far as I I had him on scrape pretty much from uh May all the way through until he started shedding his veil because he was hanging around with another little small buck, which I mean that he was a nice deer. But um they kind of split the first of September and it took me uh well about seven days to finally pinpoint his movements. But I mean, and if it wouldn't have been for again a scrape, I would have never killed that deer. I mean it uh because I was using hot vanilla at the time and uh and you know, well before I was going in to hunt and uh it just it worked out to where it uh he kind of broke free from the the dough that he was with because they really wasn't interested at the time and heat, but he was. So you know, so that's uh where it all lies with that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so it's kinda it's it's pretty important to know when and what to use at a time of year. Yeah. Um again, uh and that's just knowing, and that's that's hopefully what we can kind of help with some of our listeners on time of year to put these different lures and when when's a good time. Because we I have, like we discussed, I I did some videos for content and I was using uh Dominator and Scrape Master on a couple different videos I was doing, and and I was actually early season, bow season, and I did have a young basket eight that came in.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And he came in and he was curious on the branch butter, you know, so you smell it, and then when he smelled the actual scrape, yeah, he was done. And he kind of he backed up and he just like started looking around like this dude is is a little early, you know. So he kind of started looking around like to be honest, he wasn't spooked, but he was looking around like this guy's gonna kick my butt because he's on another level that I'm I'm not there yet. You know what I'm saying? He's like so that whoever whoever just did this has got a bad attitude, and I don't want no part of it.

SPEAKER_00

You know, and a lot of times you can mess a hunt up because of doing something too early in. And it's and it's different everywhere. I mean, you know, you're you as the hunter, I mean, you're out in the woods, you've got trail cameras going, so you can kind of see what's going on. So you use your judgment to what you feel that is needed, but as a safe bet, as soon as you start and not when I say one deer start losing velvet, I mean, yeah, but I usually try to wait till the majority of the bucks of my area start losing velvet, and then I'll kind of transition over to you know, hot and vanilla and hot and ready. Right.

SPEAKER_01

So yeah, that's uh and it's a good way because they're they're a good way to kind of pique their interest and have them checking more often because now they're like, okay, yeah, there's a girl in here and she's sort of ready for date night. So I don't want to come check her out and come hang out with her for a little bit, go whisper in her ear for a little while. So yeah, it definitely piques their interest. And estrus lures, you know, it it's it's uh I don't think you can't really go, you know, too too early with them. I mean, that you obviously can get there, like I I wouldn't go out there like beginning August or nothing and start putting it out there. But uh, you know, same with late season and early season, estrus lures, it's like, you know, is a young buck or a buck ever gonna say no? It's kind of like a husband and a wife. Yeah. I mean how how often is a husband be like, nah, I'm not in the mood. You know, no, if there's interest, uh uh they're gonna they're gonna come check it out because they want to see what they're working with here. Like how how ready is she, you know.

SPEAKER_00

So Yeah, well, even with that, I mean, even with the with the curiosity side of it, I mean, you know, if they smell something that it may not necessarily seem right like what you said, I mean, it's they may have it in their mind, well, you know, huh, I don't know about this, but they're still gonna check. Yeah, because I mean they're just they're curious. I mean, uh curious by nature, but it may not have the effect that most people think of uh a buck coming through the woods a hundred miles an hour, you know, with the ears pinned back, they're not you know, they're probably not gonna do that, but it's uh still gonna be something to to to use, you know, as the velvet starts coming off. That's you know, the best option.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah, and you can definitely um you know, as far as like summertime, now we just released the uh preseason mock scrape bundle, and that contains everything that you would use what I would say, you know, outside of the rut. Oh, yeah. Right. I mean, and we're clear on past post-rut because I I honestly use um my estrus lures and my dominator post-rut quite a bit almost to the end of the season. I mean, it's still it's still going. I mean, there's a second and a third rut, and I keep using estrus lures and everything. Usually when I would say that like clear until our season ends, which is January 1st, I keep my scrapes going after that with branch butter and then whatever I've got left of Dominator and Scrape Master, I will continue putting that out until it runs out. Now, when you start getting into like February, that's when it's it's the hard switch to young button.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I mean that's well, and it's like with me, I I use I mean, yeah, I do utilize them to get prep for the season, but really they're amazing for after season. I mean, because you you know, that you you've watched a buck all year long and he's been in there and you've seen him a couple of times and it's just man, he disappeared. I mean, you keep and always you have that thought in your head, man, somebody's got him. So, you know, you can use a scrape, even though, like I said, most people in their mind is that hey, it's over with, but I mean, you know, running up hot and ready or hot and vanilla, yeah. And uh you're still gonna have you know keep it going. Keep it going.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, well saying that's good for like you said, trail cameras. Oh, you can see like Well, this is your uh after season observation. Like you're you're looking, okay, let me let me touch up all these scrapes. And I do it often where I say, okay, who made it? Yep. Like who made it through the season that I d you know that we didn't capitalize on during deer season, but did the neighbor or somebody get them or anything like that? And so you can continue those using the estrus lures and dominator and and scrape master clear after the season. But then like I said, around November, I mean not November, but uh February. Yeah come on, months all mixed up. But if you get into February and you start going uh you know straight dough and young buck, though that's what's in our preseason mock scrape bundle. You got branch butter, uh you got a scrape rope, you get uh straight dough, and you also get your uh young buck. And those are all the great elements to put in there. Branch butter. Is that branch butter? Young buck. Scrape the scrape rope. I might have we're running down the ticket list. All right, start over. We get a branch butter, you get a scrape rope, then you get young buck, and you get straight dough. Those are all the elements of your uh, like I said, preseason, summer, spring, up until early season, early bow season. I'm still using all of those up until like we discussed, like once it starts getting velvet. But young buck, honestly, I and I'll use young buck in certain parts of Carolinas, I'll use Young Buck year-round. Yeah. You know, because there's there's a lot of you know uh younger bucks and you know, dominator sometimes they are tired of getting their butt kicked. They don't want a part of they don't want no part of Dominator. And I've talked to several people that that have boss bucks and dominator works unbelievable. Oh yeah. But if you don't have that dominant boss in the area, you could potentially those little guys are like they're like no, you know, yeah. And if you're happy with a four, six, or basket eight or something like that, the dominator very well could be a little more than they want to deal with.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. So I mean, you know, and it's it's one of those things like with uh back to the February side. I mean, you know, I I kind of keep running a little bit of the the estrus, you know not not not as much as of like Triple X or even the V for that matter, which I don't V usually is November, end October, first November only for me, but you know, you take just transition it over, you know, keep going and just never stop. And you know, if you ever look at a scrape, you can go this year in November, find a scrape on the ground. I can guarantee you go back next year, that scrape's gonna be back under that same tree. I mean it's it's like that, and it's the same way with the community scrape.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, absolutely. Well, and that's uh so we just released the preseason mock scrape bundle, and I went out to go get content and the scrapes that I went to or were active. Yep. You know, I went over there, I knew where these scrapes were at. I said, okay, well, I'm gonna go to this property. I know there's a couple scrapes over here, I could work on them. When I got there, you can clearly see where a buck had had you could see the hoof print, the hoof marks as they as he kicked out the dirt, and he's still to this day using it. Now it's not as aggressive. You're not gonna see you're not gonna see like eight or ten lines, if you know what I'm talking about, where they drag their hooves across, but you're gonna see one or two because they are gonna kick it out. Yeah, they just essentially what they're doing now is just kind of getting everything out of it so they can urinate on it, is what they're doing. There it's not an aggressive, you know, uh motion. It's just kind of like just kick it and then urinate in it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And uh there were active. I mean, right now, and here I am, you know, taking this, you know, uh preseason mock scrape bundles so we can get video and pictures of how to and how to use it and things like that. And like I said, they're still active year round.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean, you know, it's it's like an ITA, uh, you know, on the scrape side of it, I know we've not really covered it a lot, but you know, you always got to put a scrape where a deer wants to be and not where you want it to be. Absolutely. Absolutely. You know, we as far as people I hear it a lot, and and I was guilty of it. I mean, you know, you you take something, you got a tree stand hanging on a tree, and you're like, man, that right there would be a perfect 15-yard shot, and you put a scrape there. Well, you know, hey, if the deer don't want to be there, they're not gonna use that scrape. So that's something you kind of again, you have to know your area, you have to know the deer and w and how they, you know, how they work.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, sometimes it's just a matter of like 15-20 foot. You know, 15-20 foot, because I I made a mock scrape on a ridge off of a power line, and I said, Well, I'm gonna set it right here, and because I could see. That's why I said I could see that hole right there without trimming a big lane. I said, Okay, from from this direction I can see here, I'm gonna do it right there. Well, I set up the camera and I was getting pictures, but I couldn't see anything in the pictures. I'm like, what? I'm getting pictures on this mock scrape, but where are the deer at? Then I started noticing, like zooming in on it, 15, 20 feet behind. Yep, I was seeing the deer walk back and forth, and then I would see deer crossing behind it, and then as as the next week progressed, I got more pictures and they were all behind it. And I said, You gotta be kidding. So I went down there, and the great thing about the scrape rope is that wire, uh the rubber-coated wire that you hang, you could undo it and move it. So I undid it, we moved it 20 foot. I did another scrape, put a camera on there, and the activity was night and day because it was just a matter of 20 foot. When a lot of people ask me, like, hey, I'm not getting any action, I'm like, well, you it might not be where they want to be. It might not be where they're walking through. Just a matter of moving it from, you know, one side of a path to 10, 15, 20 feet away to on another path or another area, or maybe you just missed it. It looked like that was a perfect place. But if it's not, you know, simply move it. Move it 10, 15, 20 feet and try again. I mean, it's not the end of the world because the good thing about a scrape rope is you can actually undo it and take it to another branch. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah. I mean, and that's a lot of times, again, like what you said, people ask about, you know, I'm not not seeing anything, and that's usually my answer 99.9% of the time is you know, you're not in the right spot. You know, they're not they don't want to be there. If they did, they would be using the scrape.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, they absolutely they would go check it out. Because and the thing about it is that these are all real products. So a lot of times, like you'll get people that are like, well, I think I got a bad batch, or I think the mix was off, or I think the uh no, it's real preorbital gland, real forehead gland, real buck urine, real dough urine. There's there aren't any synthetics in this, you know, unless you get the synthetic line, which is you know a different story, but there's no synthetic, there's no additives, there's no preservatives, there's nothing in it to make it a bad batch. Essentially, it is pure urines, pure glanular secretions. So, you know, and that's kind of the funny thing about when you're talking about mock scrapes, because you're really kind of not making a mock scrape, you're making a real scrape. It is a real scrape with a real products. Um, the fact that a actual whitetail didn't make it would be why uh you would consider it a mock scrape. Yeah. You know, yeah, but it is real products, and and of course, they're going to investigate because it is real urines, real glanular secretions, and it's just from a different deer. That's where the curiosity comes from. Like, wait a second, who is this? Yeah, you know, it's uh it's an out-of-towner. Out-of-towner just showed up.

SPEAKER_00

Who are they? Yeah, I mean, you know, and it's uh usually over time too, especially with a community scrape, even once you get that established that you may not go back in for a year, but they're still using it because I mean they're doing your job really. I mean, at that point.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, a lot of time you're just you're just starting it, is what you're doing. You're starting it, and as soon as you start it and they take it over, and then you go over there and you just you know reapply your branch butter occasionally and your uh your urines, you'll see that they'll take it over. Come on. When they take it over, then all you when it comes time to the rut, then that's when you kind of start stepping things up with it. But honestly, you could about just kind of ease off of it and they'll run with it. You know, so a lot of times you can start with it. And and I just keep them fresh. I keep going refreshing my scrapes probably what, I don't know, every three-ish weeks.

SPEAKER_00

How about you? That's about me. I mean, you know, especially well, i a newer scrape, you know, I may go in a little bit more, but you take uh take one that's established three weeks, month, three weeks, you know, or after a heavy rain.

SPEAKER_01

Really? After a heavy rain, I like going in there and freshen it up. And honestly, when you're hunting, that's that that's a little little uh tip for you guys too. Like after a heavy rain, get on those scrapes. Yeah. Because bucks are notorious for checking all their scrapes because they want to re-establish and put their scent on there because they know that the heavy rains have come through and washed, you know, a good portion of the scent. It's still there, but it's not as strong, it's not as fresh. So deer are notorious, especially mature bucks, that after a heavy rain, they're gonna go check the scrapes.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I mean, it's uh it's something that you you know, deer are smart. I mean, they understand, I mean, they understand a lot more better than we do. I mean, for sure. So, I mean, you know, and that's again back to the whole aspect of watching deer and and seeing what they're doing and seeing how they're doing it, you know, you can learn a lot just by watching them, you know. And whether it be sitting in a tree stand, whether it be with binoculars or or a cell cam. I mean, you know, you do the homework and and and put the time in, it's it's gonna work, period.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely, yeah. Yeah, so everybody's kind of starting to get getting a little uh more informed on using scrapes year-round. And so now you guys can actually find uh branch butter and you know some other products on the shelves. They're already starting to get in a majority of them now, but the Pass Pro Shops, Dunham's, and Fleet Farm carry branch butter year-round. You can order it online year round, and uh you can keep your scrapes going. Now, if you don't have a retailer you know close to you, again, Blackwood Deer Lords.com. And you again, the preseason mock scrape bundle is now available on the website, and you can order this stuff uh year round and keep your scrapes going year round because right now is a great opportunity to get your scrapes going and watch these bucks grow.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

You know, like all the pictures that we're getting now, you're starting to see them. You know, they're starting to the bases are are filling in. They're already I've already got a few that have split their brow tons and now they're they're working on, you know, the main beams are starting to come out right at the edge of their ears, but they're growing, and I'm actually watching them because they're visiting my screens.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah. I mean, it's like, well, I've got that one that's you know, the it's well well above where it should be, honestly. I mean, I'm I don't think he's gonna be heavy, but he's gonna be he's gonna be like there's a G Two that's already like it.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, he's a basket. But it's interesting like how quick he's yeah, pretty he's he's already sort of like framed out, like you can kind of see it, where like the big guys are just yeah, there's I mean they're not their ears, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well there is they've there's so much more mass there that they've got to kind of to make up for where you know you take like I said, that I don't think he's gonna be a big deer. I mean he's not gonna be massive anyway, but uh you take those massive deer by now, you're probably you may maybe to the brow towns moving up into the the main beam side, but I don't think G2's not been more than likely. I mean, I have seen a few pictures floating around, but you know, you're probably sitting in a middle of a alfalfa field somewhere too. So we have coal dust to eat. That's about all we got right now for them because we've we don't have much. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So yeah, so they're starting to grow. So that's that's a great thing to do is watch your deer become your target bucks. You don't know what they are, and it's kind of exciting to see these bucks as they developed, and it's all because they're visiting our scrapes routinely. That's what I was gonna say. The routine. That's a routine, and what happens is they build that routine, and then when deer season comes, that routine's already established. You know, and and anybody that waits till deer season to start a scrape, I'm not saying that's ineffective, but you're kind of behind the ball. Yeah, you you're not making you haven't developed that routine, you're not making them show up on a schedule. Like they they've got a loop that they travel, right? So when you start late, and and don't get me wrong, I do it. Like if I'm going to hunt an area, I'll throw up a mock scrape right before I get in the stand. Who knows? It might work, it might not. They might not find it, or they might catch a whiff and come to it. Who knows? But the best practice, honestly, is get started early.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I mean, well, last year the deer that I shot the opening weekend on Sunday, I mean, he was there about every day for months, you know, 6 30, 7 o'clock, and 6 37 o'clock, he was standing in front of me. You know, I think it was like 11 yards or something. So I mean, it uh they they they're ha especially early season, they're so they're habit forming and it's just so easy to really do.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, fed, food, and then you got your scrapes, they're gonna check those. I mean, uh this routine. Yeah, I mean it's you know, early season is is incredible to pattern them. It's a it's really incredible to kind of like just watch them work those scrapes that you've done all year. Yeah. And they and and essentially they just kind of follow the playbook.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and then when September hits, you just wad that buck up and just throw it behind you because it's going to start all over again.

SPEAKER_01
