These are not just stories.
They are anchors.
Written in the after,
after the shift,
after the silence,
after the moment you wondered if you could still keep going.
This space isn’t loud.
It doesn’t shout advice.
But if you let it,
it might steady something in you.
A small pull toward the part of you
that still believes in why you began.
Not because it’s easy.
Because it’s yours.
To say it’s been a crazy few years would be an understatement. We live in an ever changing world, one constantly challenging people to their very core. It is because of this we aim to create assuredness in an uncertain world.
Welcome to the Project ReNew podcast, a show for nurses - and angels looking to help nurses - and anyone in search of motivation. Let’s bring you and your passion back to where you were when you first started out. Let’s reignite that fire together.

[Intro]
Hello, and welcome back to our podcast. I'm thrilled to have you join me today. Whether you're tuning in during your morning coffee, on your commute, or as you unwind after a long day, I'm grateful to be a part of your routine. Together, let's delve into a topic that is often overlooked but holds immense importance.
Before we get started, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge some of the feedback and comments we've received recently. It's incredible to hear about your experiences and how the topics we discuss are resonating with you. Please keep sharing your thoughts; it's our shared journey, after all.
Let's begin by placing ourselves within a scenario that's all too familiar to those within the nursing profession. Picture this: the hands of the clock have been inching their way around the dial for hours. A long, demanding shift at the hospital is drawing to a close. You've spent the day, and much of the night, within the bustling wards, immersed in the ceaseless rhythm of the hospital – a place where the ordinary passage of time seems to blur and distort.
Your feet, clad in worn-out nursing shoes, have paced miles of hospital corridors. You've been on the move non-stop, attending to a steady stream of patients, each with their unique needs, fears, and stories. You've been their caregiver, their advocate, their source of comfort, and at times, their shoulder to cry on. You've managed a complex array of tasks, from administering medications and updating patient charts to collaborating with doctors and reassuring concerned family members. Your nursing scrubs bear the telltale signs of the day – a splash of coffee hastily consumed during a rare break, a smudge of antiseptic, a stray pen mark.
Your body feels the physical exhaustion – the dull ache in your lower back, the slight throbbing in your temples, the fatigue that seems to seep into your very bones. But it's more than just physical tiredness. It's the emotional toll that these days take on you. The highs and lows, the victories and losses, the moments of joy and despair. The hope you see in a patient's eyes, the gratitude in their smiles, the fear, the resilience, the strength – it's a whirlwind of emotions that leaves you feeling drained.
And then, it's time to leave. As you step outside, you blink against the stark contrast between the harsh, sterile hospital lights and the soft glow of the morning sun. You take a deep breath, filling your lungs with the fresh, cool air, trying to shake off the remnants of the shift.
But even as you make your way home, the echoes of the hospital follow you. The faces of your patients, their stories, the could-haves, and should-haves – they play in your mind like a film reel. You're physically exhausted, yes, but also emotionally spent. You're carrying the weight of your patients' experiences, their hopes, and fears, along with your own.
This scene, vivid as it is, isn't culled from a dramatic television series. It's a snapshot of the daily reality for nurses around the globe. It's a testament to the relentless demands of the profession, the physical rigor, and the emotional weight it carries. And yet, despite its challenges, you show up, day after day, shift after shift, committed to providing the best care for your patients.
But here's a question: amid the chaos, the pressure, and the demands of the job, where do you find space for yourself? How do you replenish your reserves, not just physically, but emotionally and mentally? How do you navigate the winding path of maintaining your well-being while pouring so much of yourself into your work?
Today, we'll dive into these questions and explore the often-overlooked importance of hobbies in a nurse's life. We'll discuss why finding a balance between your professional responsibilities and personal interests isn't just a luxury, but a necessity for maintaining your overall well-being. We'll delve into the world of arts and crafts, a realm that offers a refuge, a space for self-expression, and a potent tool for stress relief. So, let's embark on this journey together, exploring ways to weave moments of creativity, joy, and relaxation into the fabric of your bustling nursing life.
In the realm of healthcare, nursing stands as a profession that demands unrelenting commitment, both physically and mentally. It is a career that is as rewarding as it is challenging. Today, we aim to shed light on the often-underdiscussed aspect of nursing – the mental toll it can exert on those in the profession. While the physical demands of nursing are widely acknowledged, the psychological stress that nurses often experience is an area that merits closer attention and understanding.
Research conducted across the globe has repeatedly highlighted that nurses are at an increased risk of developing mental health issues, including anxiety and depression, as compared to the general population. This trend is concerning and underscores the need for proactive measures to address the mental health of nurses.
The triggers contributing to this heightened risk are multifaceted and complex, intricately woven into the very fabric of the profession. One such factor is the long and often irregular working hours that are characteristic of a nursing career. Nurses are frequently required to work long shifts, sometimes extending to twelve or more hours. These shifts may rotate between day and night, disrupting the natural sleep-wake cycle and leading to a condition known as shift work sleep disorder. Over time, this can have significant repercussions on a nurse's mental health, leading to heightened stress levels, fatigue, and in severe cases, burnout.
Adding to this is the emotional weight of dealing with critically ill patients and their families. Nurses are the primary point of contact for patients and are often the ones providing emotional support to them and their families. They witness firsthand the struggles, pain, and sometimes, the loss that patients and their families undergo. While providing empathetic care is a part of their job, the emotional toll it can take on nurses is profound. It can lead to a state of emotional exhaustion, known as compassion fatigue, which can manifest as feelings of sadness, anxiety, and decreased job satisfaction.
Moreover, there is often a lack of adequate support and resources available to nurses to cope with such pressures. While there are protocols and procedures in place to ensure physical safety and to manage the physical demands of the job, the psychological aspects are often overlooked. Nurses may not have access to mental health resources, such as counseling or stress management workshops, that could equip them with the tools to navigate the mental demands of their profession effectively. Additionally, the stigma associated with mental health issues in many societies may deter nurses from seeking help, further exacerbating the issue.
The confluence of these factors—long working hours, emotional stress, and lack of adequate mental health support—creates a challenging environment for nurses. The pressures they face are not just confined to their professional lives but often seep into their personal lives, affecting their relationships, leisure time, and overall quality of life.
However, acknowledging these challenges is the first step towards addressing them. With the growing recognition of these issues, there are increased efforts towards implementing strategies and measures to support the mental health of nurses. This includes promoting a healthy work-life balance, providing access to mental health resources, and fostering a work culture that values and prioritizes mental well-being.
The resilience and commitment of nurses are truly commendable. They are the backbone of the healthcare system, and their well-being, both physical and mental, is essential for the provision of quality healthcare. As we delve deeper into this topic, we'll explore strategies for managing these stressors and how hobbies, particularly arts and crafts, can serve as a powerful tool for stress relief and mental well-being. The journey towards mental health is an ongoing process, and it's crucial for each nurse to find their unique path towards achieving it.
Navigating the challenges of a nursing career, particularly the high-stress situations, requires an intentional and consistent effort towards self-care and personal well-being. It is not an area to be taken lightly or regarded as a luxury, but rather an essential part of maintaining your ability to provide quality care to your patients. So, how does one begin to chart this journey towards improved mental health and stress management? Let's delve deeper into some insights, advice, and strategies that can act as your compass on this expedition.
Mindfulness practices are an effective method of anchoring oneself in the present moment. These practices, which can take the form of meditation, yoga, or simple deep-breathing exercises, are aimed at calming the mind and grounding one's awareness in the here and now. Amid the hustle and bustle of a busy nurse's routine, it's easy to get caught up in a whirlwind of tasks, concerns, and future plans. This can lead to feelings of anxiety and unease. By integrating mindfulness practices into your daily routine, you can cultivate a sense of calm and focus that can help reduce anxiety and depression symptoms. Even a few minutes of deep breathing or meditation each day can make a significant difference.
Another crucial aspect of navigating these challenges is prioritizing physical health. This includes maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, and ensuring that you are getting enough rest. The adage, "You can't pour from an empty cup," rings especially true for nurses. Your capacity to provide care to others is intrinsically linked to your physical well-being. Nutritious food can fuel your body for the demands of your job, regular exercise can help regulate your mood and sleep patterns, and getting sufficient sleep is essential for recovery and resilience. Making time for these aspects of self-care may require some planning and organization, but the benefits to your overall health and stamina are well worth it.
In addition to taking care of your physical health, it's important to seek emotional and psychological support when needed. Professional counselors and support groups can provide a safe space to express your feelings, share your experiences, and learn from others who are navigating similar challenges. The journey of maintaining mental health does not have to be a solitary one. There is immense value in connecting with others, gaining perspective from their experiences, and realizing that you're not alone in your struggles. This shared understanding and mutual support can be an invaluable source of comfort and resilience.
Alongside traditional forms of support, don't shy away from exploring alternative therapies. Art therapy, music therapy, pet therapy, and a host of other holistic approaches can provide unique avenues for stress relief and emotional expression. Each person's journey towards mental health is deeply personal and what works best for one person might not be the same for another. Be open to trying out different forms of therapy and find what resonates with you. You may find that painting a canvas, playing a musical instrument, or spending time with a therapy dog provides a therapeutic outlet for stress and a source of joy and relaxation.
In essence, the key to navigating the challenges of a nursing career lies in being proactive about your mental and physical health. Experiment with different strategies, be open to new experiences, and most importantly, prioritize your well-being. Each nurse is as unique as the patients they care for, and recognizing this individuality is crucial when finding the most effective ways to manage stress and enhance overall well-being. You are more than just a nurse; you're a human being with unique needs, passions, and strengths. Embrace this individuality and use it as a tool to carve out a balanced, fulfilling career in nursing.
Before we wrap up today's episode, I want to leave you with a challenge. I invite you to take one step this week towards better self-care. Maybe it's setting aside five minutes a day to meditate or booking an appointment with a counselor. Whatever it is, take that step. You're worth it.
I'd love to hear how it goes and any changes you notice. Feel free to share your experiences with us. After all, we're all on this journey together.
Remember, you give so much of yourself in caring for others, but don't forget to take care of yourself too. You are the heart of healthcare, and your wellbeing matters. Until next time, stay healthy, stay strong, and remember, you're doing an amazing job.
That's it for today's episode. I appreciate you tuning in and being a part of our conversation about mental health in the nursing profession.
