Okay, guys, I am so freaking excited. And I know I say that all the time. Like I probably start half the episodes and I'm so freaking excited. But today I'm so excited because I have surpassed 200 episodes on this podcast. And if you are a podcaster, you know, podcasting is a huge labor of love, right? So it takes a lot to see return. If you have no idea who's listening, I'm even shocked sometimes. I got a message today from an entrepreneur that is like so out of my league, in my opinion. And she was like, you know, I'm always listening to your podcast.
And I was like, what? This is nuts. And I have been at this for over 200 episodes, two and a half years. I've fluctuated between one episode a week, two episodes a week, interviews, solo episodes. I've done stuff in person, I've done stuff online. I brought you along to events with me. It's been so amazing. And so I wanted to actually kind of talk about that and talk about a little reflection on 200 episodes. And this is particularly really great for someone.
who is thinking about starting a podcast, who has a podcast, because often it can feel so overwhelming. We know the stats around podcasting, right? We know like a lot of them don't make it past 10 episodes, many don't make it past 20. You know, the download numbers can feel really discouraging. There's times where I have posted a podcast and I thought it was like such a banger and I'm like so excited. And then there's times where, you know, I've gotten not the downloads I thought it would. And then there's podcast episodes where
It's been so surprising how interested you are in this topic. so podcasting has been just such a gift and I've had so much fun. And I always say this, so you've heard it before that no matter what, like if no one ever listened to my podcast again, which please don't stop, but if no one ever listened to my podcast again, I would still do it. And the reason is, is because one, it's the best networking hack out there. So if you are podcasting and you're having 10 downloads, but you're interviewing really cool people and having great conversations,
You're getting great social content, having really good dialogues, building that authority on your topic. That is such a great start to having a podcast or being on podcasts. The other thing is that it has been such an amazing way for me to connect with many people, Where whether that be having them on the show, listeners, people who I've never met before, where they've listened to my podcast.
Kristina (02:19.202)
That has been so cool. And so it's my priority to continue to do this, even though, you know, my season of life is changing a bit. So I don't know what it's going to look like, but it's my priority to keep on providing value here, talking about how to build community, how to grow your business, how to figure out like what you should be doing in business as Maria and I have been doing it. Right. Like one of the things that's been really important to me is that, you know, Maria and I are definitely come with me kind of girls. Like we want you to be part of what we're doing. We want you to see what we're up to.
and really just be kind of part of all of it. And so it's been really cool to see how many people have kind of watched us grow up over these last, you know, three and a half, almost four years. And it just kind of feels like the beginning. And so, you know, our team's grown so much. We have amazing clients. Like everything has kind of shifted. And so it's been really, really cool for us to be able to think about that in a different way. And I'm just really, really excited about kind of what's to come.
Podcasting definitely isn't going anywhere. And you know this from probably listening before, but we have helped launch over 40 podcasts and we've helped people bring their podcasts into the world and help with their messaging and help them kind of bring it to the next step. And so it's been really cool to see how many people have used podcasting to grow their businesses. But we've also been working with people on more like leisurely podcasts and things that bring people joy. And that's been really cool too. So not everything has to be like a huge business adventure.
But what I want to talk about today really about is how to kind of keep up that momentum. Doing anything 200 times is a lot. And especially podcasting, where our podcast is a bit monetized now, but it hasn't always felt monetized, right? Like I haven't always felt like, this has been a huge use of my good use of my time. But the way I've been able to maintain that perspective has been really focusing on the people that I'm meeting, the people I'm connecting with, and really taking any when I can.
So when people repost my podcast, when people tell me that something resonated with them, when I see a new review, all of those things kind of fuel me to keep going. I have a friend who has a folder in her email where anytime she gets a positive email from a client, she files it. And I think that's so genius because sometimes when we're in the season of doing so many things, even the stuff that bring us joy, kind of sometimes it's like a little like, should I be doing that? Is that what I should be using my time for?
Kristina (04:38.638)
And so with podcasting, with doing this 200 times, whether that be weekly or bi-weekly interviews, whatever that's looked like, it has always had to bring me joy. And so I found different ways to kind of cultivate joy while podcasting and really just growing the show. So I just want to share them with you. So the first thing I'm just going to talk about is an easy one, which is talk about things that light you up. So if you have a podcast, like for example, I would never have a murder podcast or anything of that sort, because that doesn't really light me up, but some people love...
murder podcasts and that's great or you love arts podcasts or whatever. But for me, I knew the podcast had to be about something that really got me excited. So even when I bring guests on something that I've really changed and maybe you've even seen it if you've been listening has been I really only bring on guests to talk about things I want to talk about. So I don't pretend that like, you know, when I get a cold pitch and that person's not really a fit.
I don't like go, okay, that person's not really a fit, but I should just take them because like, you know, that's good. It's like, no, I'm like, I don't really want to talk about that. I don't think my audience is going to get value from that. I made that mistake early on, right? Where you get pitched by people, you get interest from people and you're like, okay, I'll just take them. Like, no, no more of this. I really am intentional about who should be here because I care so much about your ears. And so I really want to make sure that whoever is like listening to this podcast knows that I'm really prioritizing their time.
The other thing too is that you want to find things that light you up in terms of like business or life or whatever and really just focus on those things. But you'd be surprised how many times people like really listen to you, right? My download numbers fluctuate, they go up, they go down. I can't assume everyone listens to every episode. I know there's a few of you, which is like the sweetest and thank you so much again. But I can't assume that, right? So if you talk about something more than once, don't worry about it, right? Don't, it's like social, people aren't seeing everything.
So I talk about community a lot. I talk about podcasting a lot. I talk about social a lot. I bring up stuff all the time that's similar. I don't do that because I'm out of things to talk about. I do that because I know not everyone's hearing it every time and I know it's important. So even some of the podcasts I listen to, like I listen to Chris and Lori's show, I listen to Diary of a CEO, I listen to lots of podcasts almost every day. And those help me be better interviewers. Those things help me be a better interviewer. And so with that in mind, I really hear a lot of the same messages.
Kristina (07:01.196)
you know, bringing forward these really good entrepreneurial lessons. It's always new content, but bringing it and spending it in a different way. So don't feel like, you know, you get behind the mic and you're like, I have nothing to talk about. Unless you're doing 25 episodes in a row about the same thing, don't worry about it. You want to make sure that your content spread out, but like, you don't be afraid to talk about something more than once. I'm always shocked. Even Maria and I, have an episode I can link here about how to do better on your Instagram stories.
Well, that's something we've talked about more than once, right? We've talked multiple times about how people can increase their story views, how people can get in front of new people. But we know it's important and people still ask us these questions all the time. So that has been really important. The other thing is I am really big on not reinventing the wheel. So if somebody asks me a question, I typically will build a podcast episode around it so I don't have to answer the question over and over. So we get a lot of questions in the social business club. I love them.
But sometimes the questions are the same because people are kind of popping in. So I will make episodes specifically for that. So it's like if you are in a season where you're like, OK, people keep asking me about this in my business, how can you turn it into a podcast episode so you can leverage that as a resource? So I do not reinvent the wheel. And I really, really take note of what people are asking me. So I really keep a note on my phone. I do it for content. And I do it for podcasts.
So it's great. The other pieces that I use my podcast as content. So you'll see that, right? You've seen probably if you're listening right now, you likely, think would probably follow us on some kind of social media. You've seen me use a clip, right? I'm not afraid to do that. It's a great, great way for me to get more content. So if I'm gonna spend the 15 minutes recording a podcast episode, I might as well get some clips out of it so that it's a little bit better for me long-term. So that is something that I think can be really, really helpful.
is like not putting so much focus on reinventing the wheel and really just like, what are people asking you about and how can you add value? The other thing is that success leaves clues. We talk about this all the time when it comes to like almost everything else, but when it comes to social and podcasting, you're gonna see that the things that you do start to leave clues, right? So when you talk about X, people like that. When you talk about Y, people don't like that. When you title your episodes this way, people are interested. When you title your episodes that way,
Kristina (09:22.936)
people aren't interested. So you start to notice those things. And that's why looking at your patterns is so important. We noticed this with social snippet all the time where, know, even yesterday we were recording a whole bunch of episodes and me and Ben just did another really killer LinkedIn episode. And before we kind of hopped on, I was like, Ben, like, it's kind of crazy. Like your episode did better than Chris and Lori's episodes on my podcast, better than Jacqueline, like better than like people with huge audiences who were so generous and resharing. Like your episodes are like top episode really.
And he was like, yeah, but that actually just shows that people want to talk about that topic, right? Ben doesn't have a personal brand to share that on other than his LinkedIn. So it was really interesting for us to be like, okay. It's interesting. People want LinkedIn information. So really thinking about like, what are people asking you about? But also like, what are people responding to? What are you getting a lot of downloads on? What are people saying? Wow, that was so insightful. Wow, that was so smart. Like, thank you so much for sharing that. People really love that. The other two things that have been really key to my success in being able to keep this up for so long.
is one, I do a rotation of interviews and solo episodes. for example, you've probably heard less solo episodes kind of in the last probably six months because I'm pregnant and I had a rough first trimester. So I really wasn't super motivated to be doing much. But as soon as I kind of came back into it, I started doing more solo episodes so that we had a bit of a bank. But I had a lot of...
guest interviews to rely on. had done a lot of guest interviews before getting pregnant. I had a bunch that were already kind of in the queue. I had some events content that we could use. So there was like a lot of stuff, right? I don't, don't like sit there being like, no, I don't have podcast episode content because I'm always a bit ahead. I try to do that for my team because they are so busy and they work on so many clients. And so I aim to be the best client I can possibly be, but I think I'm the worst. but really like I make sure that I try to like really, batch record them.
as much as possible. and don't be afraid. You go speak on a panel somewhere, ask them for the audio for a podcast. If you're hosting an event, like try to make it live podcast component. And it doesn't have to be perfect. We actually are working with a really high profile entrepreneur on launching his podcast. And he was like, okay, I love Ask Me Anythings. So could I just do an Ask Me Anything? And we were like, yeah, dude, like do an Ask Me Anything. And even if you put on a mic on,
Kristina (11:41.346)
to your phone and you don't do video for that one because you just want to get some content out, sometimes that's the stuff that performs the best. So of course I'm all for like really intentional content and making sure that, you know, whatever it is that you are posting is like valuable. Like that's super important, but I've definitely been in at events where I've gotten like a huge hit that I'm like, like this would be so good for the podcast. And I'll just plug in my mini mics and I'll record in my hotel room and there won't be any video, but it'll be so good because it's really in the moment and
I'm really sharing. A lot of my mentors who podcast do that as well. Like they don't need to be in a studio to always record or have their big mic there, right? Like you're able to do a lot of stuff that can move the needle and really get in front of your audience without it being like super, super official content. Like don't let that keep you from getting started, right? It's easy when we see people, we've definitely done it. We're probably in the studio once a month doing content. Like it's great. And it doesn't need to be that
So think about different ways that you guys can make this happen. The other thing is that I love the rotation of interview in solo. I think, you know, also figuring out the cadence of like what you like in terms of interview length. At the beginning, I felt a lot of pressure for them to be an hour. And I actually, I would not listen to a one hour podcast. I've been listening to the same diary of a CEO podcast is two and a half hours long. I have been listening to this for probably a full week, right? That's just not my style of listening or chatting.
So occasionally, Maria and I will do an hour because we like, you know, lots of lots to say. But what we'll do is we'll split it into two episodes for people to listen. I don't know if people like that. So if you guys don't like that, somebody tell me. But you guys won't hear everything at once. But it gives me also a little bit more content to work with. So that is something you mind too, is like it's really about your style, right? Like you need to be happy with the episodes. You need to be excited about it. So if you're like, I don't really like showing up that way or I don't like, I don't like interviewing people.
Or I like my interviews to be like this. You know, I've had interviewers where they come and they send me like hundred questions in advance. That's awesome if that feels great for them. That's not my style. When people come on my podcast, they don't get any prep. So I don't pretend to prepare people. I love to see what the conversation goes. I had an amazing interview the other day and the person was like, you didn't send me any questions. And I was like, okay, here's what I think we'll talk about. We didn't even talk about any of those things because what she said was even better than I could have imagined. So I'm always open to the possibilities.
Kristina (14:04.694)
Really, that's just my style, but that doesn't make everybody comfortable. And I'm sure if Maria hosted a podcast, it'd be very prepared. So it's really about finding that balance so that you're able to do it in your style, because that's the only way you're going to keep doing it. So it's like anything else in life. If you hate it, you're going to dread doing it, and you're not going to want to do it anymore. And so I've tried to just make this as light and fun as possible.
have as much joy with it, have as many amazing conversations, bring my friends on, like have conversations with them that I'd already be having, and really just dialoguing that way. Me and my friend Stacey Millard from School for Small Business, we have done so many podcast episodes in hotel rooms where, you know, one time she woke me up, we were in Kelowna, and she was like, I have this question I wanna ask you, like, can we do a podcast? And I was like, ha ha ha, and we laid in bed and we talked about this. I wish we hadn't sent the video, but.
But it's just interesting because it's like, you know, it's not really about perfect, right? It's really just about you know, getting good value out there. So anyway, I hope that inspires you if you are, you know, thinking about getting started if you're feeling the lag, you're feeling burnt out. We have an awesome blog post about podcasts or burnout and how to kind of overcome it that I'll link below. really like podcasting is just such a labor of love. And so you have to love the way you're doing it. So for those of you who've been with me since the beginning and you've listened to 200 episodes like my goodness nuts.
Um, love this for, for me. And I'm so internally grateful for those of you who are new. I'm so excited to have you as part of my world and always, I'm always open to feedback. So if you're like, Hey, I have this idea of this is what I want you to talk about. Um, have you thought about doing this? Have you thought about doing that? I love all of that stuff. So please do send it to me. Um, and I just really appreciate you guys so much for being part of my community. Have an amazing day.
