Golfweek Amateur Tour - The Podcast

New Directors, Big Vision: Michigan & St. Louis Set the Tone for 2026

Tim Newman & Chris Rocha Season 5 Episode 3

Send us a text

The heart of the Golfweek Amateur Tour isn’t just scorecards and trophies, it’s people, places, and purpose. This week on Golfweek Amateur Tour – The Podcast, hosts Tim Newman and Chris Rocha kick things off with real talk: holiday stories, missed birthdays, health updates, and a reminder that the Golfweek Amateur Tour Community always comes first.

Then it’s on to business, good business.

We welcome Jim Shadduck, the new Michigan Tour Director, who’s bringing a player-first mindset to one of the most competitive local Senior Amateur Tours in the country. Jim breaks down a Michigan schedule built around meaningful venues, including university courses and marquee tracks that reward smart strategy over ego-driven swings. From value-driven entry fees to expanded payouts, Jim is focused on delivering Amateur Golf Tournaments that feel fair, competitive, and worth the travel.

Next, we introduce Daniel Van Meter, the new St. Louis Tour Director, whose approach blends competitive golf with intentional community building. A pharmacist, coach, and former points champion, Daniel shares how family involvement, junior pathways, and creative ideas like the Birdie Club are enhancing player engagement across all flights. His goal is simple: make every Golfweek Amateur Tour event feel memorable, personal, and shareable.

Along the way, Tim and Chris dig into course strategy, destination golf, and why target golf still wins championships, whether you’re navigating Harbour Town-style angles or chasing points toward qualifying for the National Championship. They also highlight the real economic impact of Golfweek Amateur Tour events, including how a single event can inject tens of thousands of dollars into a local community.

This episode is a snapshot of what makes the Golfweek Amateur Tour special: serious golf, welcoming competition, and a nationwide network where amateurs truly play like pros.

SPEAKER_05:

Have you guys had a very Merry Christmas Chris? Uh uh it looked like you know from the twelve days of Christmas your members had a great had a great Christmas, but how was yours and and your family's Christmas?

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, I mean it was it was a good time, you know. It was fun being able to make uh all those videos. I hope you got to see some. Uh got some good thank you, got got some good compliments on that. Uh it was a good time, you know. We had uh a director of mine, an assistant director, win on the day that he he did his his intro, which was which was kind of funny coincidence, but uh I mean what can you do when when you roll a yeah when you when we when you roll a wheel of names, anything can happen. Exactly. Um Christmas was great, you know, got to hang out with the family. Uh we host every year, so everybody comes to our house and I like it better better that way, because I don't I don't have to drive home. I can enjoy a plentiful glasses of whiskey like like it was back in Hilton Head.

SPEAKER_05:

I understand. I I definitely understand. So, well I'm I'm going to hell. I don't I don't know if you realize this, but no, we we we discussed this, but um go ahead.

SPEAKER_02:

I'll let you do the honors.

SPEAKER_05:

It's been along a couple weeks. So just so you know, I I I don't give even more shit after uh after uh so if you if you guys remember we always forget something. And we do a couple years ago it was Mother's Day, and we we we forgotten Veterans Day, but I I think I made uh a cardinal sin last week. Um we wish everybody Merry Christmas and happy Hanukkah and those types of things. But uh we we missed Jen's birthday. Jen's birthday is is uh December the eighteenth. Um so during Hanukkah it's been yeah it's been eight crazy nights. Just put it that way.

SPEAKER_02:

You know, in it happens. Um the unfortunate thing is she realized that as we were recording. Um not you know, as she was listening to it in her car or wherever, because that could have been worse. So at least it was at home. But um, yes, Jen, we we missed your birthday. Uh we apologize, but I I hope it was great.

SPEAKER_05:

Uh Chris, I'm I'm not I'm not taking you down down with me on this one. This one is 100% on me. You you I'm I'm I'm I'm giving you an out. This was this was what this was on me. Uh never again. We're we're going to hell, but I mean it's well, there's just just keep stacking the reasons, you know.

SPEAKER_02:

You know what though? I mean, we we we gotta love that we have people that uh notice the little things that we miss. Um because that just only makes us better.

SPEAKER_05:

It does. It does. So well with that, before we start talking about our guests um you know, I went uh I went to see the the uh uh the kids and grandkids for Christmas, but before we left, I got to go over to see Jennifer McCormick for the first time since uh seen her. Oh wow since August. Uh and she you know what she she looks she looks really good. Spirits are are are high. I mean she we we didn't stay long. We we we spent maybe twenty minutes, thirty minutes with them. Uh and uh she looks really good and like I said i in in in good spirits, she looks good. You know, it's uh yeah, they're they're they're doing the uh radiation now, so probably won't see her again for a little bit, but you know, I just I I don't I don't want to go see her at you know you know we just got back uh back in town and and uh kids always give us something, so I'm not taking anything that the kids gave us and taking over you know because again that's just add another layer on on on on top of all the all the stuff that we do. So but I did what everybody know again she she looks really good and in great spirits, was happy, um joking around and up and moving around and and and doing lots of good stuff. So it was nice.

SPEAKER_02:

That's yeah, that's good to hear because um you know we did miss her at Nationals. Uh you can tell it was it was a different vibe. Um but you know, I I had Dennis on on my first day of of Christmas intro and and he looked in good spirits and and you know it different from what we saw in October. So it's only looking up from here and uh glad to hear that report.

SPEAKER_05:

Yeah, absolutely. So let's go ahead and and uh bring bring in our first guest. It's it's it's another new tour director um from from uh senior Michigan. He's he's taken over for Dennis Knott to uh move to Florida. Chris, let's go ahead and welcome in our new senior Michigan tour director, Jim Shattuck. Jim, welcome to the show and welcome to the team, bud.

SPEAKER_03:

Hey there. How are you doing, everybody? Thank you for welcoming me.

SPEAKER_05:

It's just another normal re recording night for us. Um there's always something fun, fun going on, but I'm I'm glad you you can uh you've taken some time to join us. Uh just when when you go when you leave here, you can't tell anybody how bad some of this stuff is that that that we're doing, you know, playing with emojis and and that sort of thing. I well, I think I just gave us away.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, your secret is safe.

SPEAKER_05:

That's awesome. So so Jim, tell us a little bit about yourself. You're you're from the senior Michigan tour. Uh give us a little bit of background.

SPEAKER_03:

So uh a little background to me, you know, I was uh I was a baseball kid growing up all through high school, through college, played baseball, um, and I started getting into golf, you know, once once all my competitive days with softball, volleyball, and all this, all the uh athletic activities that hurt our bodies as you get older. And uh I just started playing a lot of golf. I I ran into kind of the amateur tour, the senior amateur tour, uh, I don't know, maybe four or five, six years ago, something like that. Um started playing in the events, and um I just uh I love it. Um and when the Dennis who was running the tour prior to me um decided he was going to retire and move to Florida, um, and he told me that I should look into it and consider it uh to be the next director. So I love the opportunity. We have been um uh I say we, Rich Wheeler is um another guy that um uh I befriended, and he's one of my first friends on tour, and he's gonna be helping me out. We've put together a tremendous schedule uh this year throughout the state of Michigan. So I'm really excited and uh it's gonna be a lot of fun.

SPEAKER_05:

Well, you know, uh we're gonna miss Dennis. I mean, he he he did a great job, but the same thing I tell most of the people that live up that way, you know, in Chicago, Milwaukee, Michigan, Minnesota, you don't have to live there. And I think Dennis finally figured out, you know what? I'm just gonna move somewhere where it's warm.

SPEAKER_03:

All right. Yeah, he's the smart one. Um I was uh shoveling snow first thing this morning, so nope.

SPEAKER_05:

I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_03:

I'll pass.

SPEAKER_05:

I'm just not you know we we had some.

SPEAKER_03:

I wouldn't mind it so much, but I stopped snowboarding.

SPEAKER_05:

Well, because it you're gonna kill yourself at this age. Yeah, we we actually had snow here in Hildenhead last year, last January. And what upset me anything more than what upset me more than anything is I didn't have a shovel. Groom man didn't have a shovel to to get rid of the snow. Uh so there's no way I'm I'm not not doing snow anymore. It just just not doing it.

unknown:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05:

Chris, you ever had snow in in El Paso? Ever?

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, like just covering the ground and that's it. Yeah, I'm always worried about it.

SPEAKER_05:

So Jim, t tell us about what do you do dur during the day when you're not shoveling snow or playing golf?

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, you know, I am a senior, but uh I I do still work. I've been uh writing home mortgages for uh I'm into 21 years now, so I do that uh on my normal time and throughout the week, and uh try to spend as much time uh as I can, you know, playing golf and uh winning some tournaments. So I still have a son playing college baseball, so we've got one more season to watch him play. And so uh yeah, then it's just it's work in golf. Wow.

unknown:

Wow.

SPEAKER_05:

So so where where did you go to school?

SPEAKER_03:

I went to uh the what it's now called the University of Olivet. Uh when I was there, it was Olivet College, it's a small uh D3 uh uh school here in Michigan between Lansing and Battle Creek. Okay. Um you know, met a lot of great friends there, had had a great opportunity to play some college baseball. And uh uh yeah, it's been a lot of fun. It was uh it was a fun school to to attend. A lot of great friends.

SPEAKER_05:

And your son's a uh a senior, and what what position does he play in in um what school does he go to?

SPEAKER_03:

Yep, he's um he is at uh Aquinas College, uh, which is uh NAIA school, um, part of the NAIA out of um uh uh Grand Rapids. Uh he's primarily a catcher in his four years that he's been playing there. He's caught, he's played third, he's pitched, he's played outfield. So he has uh uh a nice opportunity that he can he can fill in uh whenever he's not catching just about anywhere. And then uh I have uh another son who's in his first semester of the doctorate program for physical therapy at Grand Valley uh University. Wow. God bless him.

SPEAKER_05:

Yeah, that's uh I was an athletic trainer in my hi in one of my first professional lives, and you know the that that profession there, you you um it's gonna take a lot of time, and but when he's done, he he's gonna he's gonna be okay.

SPEAKER_03:

Do either do either of them. Yeah, we're uh very proud. Sure. Uh oh yeah, they both play. Um uh my oldest is uh he's all about golf now. You know, my other one, um my youngest, he's uh ready to put the spikes away, and he'll be all golf too. So yeah, so we were a baseball family, and now it's uh you know, like I said, now we're just playing golf.

SPEAKER_05:

That's awesome. Yeah, that that's when when they get done school, you gotta get them uh helping you run these tournaments. Um put them to work a little bit. You'll spend a day with them, but yeah, they got to work.

SPEAKER_03:

Yes, for sure. Yep. Yeah, we've got uh quite a few tournaments up in the Grand Rapids area, so uh I will be putting them to work when we get up that way.

SPEAKER_05:

So I'm I'm actually looking at your at your schedule right now.

unknown:

Right.

SPEAKER_05:

Um I don't know too much about a lot of these courses. I've I've played uh I've played Bucks Run. Um let's see here. That's actually that's the only one I played that's on your schedule. So so which one's it which one is?

SPEAKER_03:

Oh see, that's awesome. That's what I love. We worked really, really hard to put this schedule together.

SPEAKER_05:

Okay. So talk about the University of Michigan, you know, in in in April. Is that gonna be is that a is that gonna be opening time for you guys? Is that a good time to play that?

SPEAKER_03:

Um, I think that's gonna be a really good time. Um okay. Obviously, you know, we never really know what the weather's gonna be like. Um the last several years, it's been really nice uh in April. Uh so I'm kind of taking a chance, but uh I think that we're gonna be okay, even if it's a little chilly, the snow should be gone. Um, you know, heck, did to be honest with you, I can go back many years and we had snowstorms on Mother's Day.

SPEAKER_05:

So Yeah.

SPEAKER_03:

Oh well.

SPEAKER_05:

That doesn't surprise me uh being up there, but you know, it's again, it's probably hit or miss. Yeah. But what I'm what I really you know, we when you talk to other tour directors that that have uh tournaments at the I would say the flagship university of the of the state, they most of them say that that's really the the best course. I mean, uh I I don't even listen to Butch and and the uh and the Ohio State course. That's we're not even looking to talk about that. But um you know, the the guys from Indiana, they they play both at Notre Dame and at uh uh IU, the f the foul course. They love them. Um University of Maryland course is has has always been good. Uh you know, I don't I don't know I don't think Dwayne's ever talked about being on at uh well he's in Dallas, not in Austin, but I won in Austin. But what what what other people we talk to that that are playing these college courses?

SPEAKER_02:

There have been a handful that I can't think of, but there are a bunch of college courses out there that are being played. Yeah. Virginia? Isn't the isn't the college uh Virginia's course playing played?

SPEAKER_05:

No, no, they're not they're not playing there, but um the the the whole idea of you know at least from you know some of these other tour directors' perspective is is if you can play on on these these courses that where the where the flagship university plays, it's it's you're generally playing a good course and it's it's course that people want to play. But of your schedule, what which which is the course it is a phenomenal track. Okay. Would you say that's the that's the one of the premieres that that's on your schedule?

SPEAKER_03:

100%. Yep. I actually I just added today, too. Um you the University of Michigan is definitely one of our flagship um uh courses that we're gonna play. You played Bucks Run, Tim, so you know how nice that is. Yes. Uh Stonewater Country Club over in Grand Rapids. Again, another beautiful course. Um, and um what's another one? Gosh, there's there's so many. Um, we're doing a two-day at Moose Ridge, uh, which is kind of right in the Ann Arbor area, just north, um, but you know, a true gym in Livingston County, that um you you wouldn't believe it. It's truly like playing a course up north, uh right here, you know, 15 minutes from my house.

SPEAKER_05:

That that's awesome. That's awesome. If if you're if you're gonna talk to somebody about not missing a one-day course, we we've talked about a couple of them. Can't so you can't choose those. Which is the one-day course? If somebody's gonna be traveling and they're gonna come to Michigan, which is the one that they need to target their weekend for?

SPEAKER_03:

Oh boy. The University of Michigan is right there, Stolton Bray, um, out of um, it's kind of on the west side, um, more the west half of Michigan, kind of uh between Battle Creek and Kalamazoo. Uh, that that's a relatively new course. I think it's only five years old or something like that, but it was one of the top five courses in the state. So you've got that one. Jim.

SPEAKER_02:

I've got to ask you, I'm looking at your schedule. Um these kind of look kind of scary. The nightmare course and the dream course.

SPEAKER_03:

What's going on with those two? Those are um kind of piggyback courses. They're in kind of the middle, the the middle of the state, kind of lower uh lower Michigan, kind of yeah, halfway to really truly up north. Um, but they are just beautiful tracks. Um very, very risk reward. Um, you walk out of there uh feeling pretty good uh with uh with your score, whatever it is that you shoot. Um and the kind of the joke there is the dream is more of the nightmare kind of a course. Uh is really, really difficult. Uh the nightmare uh it does uh come across a little dreamy, uh dreamier and uh easier uh with a little more room to um miss. But yeah, beautiful tracks. That's gonna be a great event.

SPEAKER_02:

And I see they have uh on their website The Quest is their third sister course, which is kind of interesting.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, I I don't know much about that. I've seen it started to get advertised. Uh, I have not even seen where the course is in relation to the other two yet, uh, but I'm expecting that to be equally as nice as the other two. Yeah, so we've got the a couple of nice weekends. If somebody wants to spend the weekend in Mount Pleasant, um play Bucks Run and stay overnight. You I mean, there's a handful of other courses that are beautiful right in that area. Or, you know, we do the overnight at nightmare in the dream.

SPEAKER_05:

Yeah, you probably won't get any sleep though if you do that.

SPEAKER_02:

I see what you did there. I see what you did.

SPEAKER_05:

You gotta be quick around here, man. You got you know, sure. We don't play. So what other things should should uh should your members be looking looking for this year that's gonna be a little bit different than what what Dennis did?

SPEAKER_03:

You know what, what uh what we're trying to do um is uh I'm trying to gosh, I don't know. I don't know the better way to say it. We're just trying to um give people the opportunity to uh play some great courses. We've got great competition. We've uh I'm gonna increase the uh the pot size um you know for for those that finish uh in the top three, four places. I want to try to pay out a few more people, but also make it a little bit uh nicer uh when you take first.

SPEAKER_05:

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah, and and but my guess is you're you're gonna be the same same size as uh uh as you were last year with with close to 140 have maybe 150 members. And that's that's really get you some good field sizes and and get the pots up there and and get the the the you know the the skins yeah and those other cash games are are huge as well yep yeah you know what i've had some really great conversations with courses that were really receptive to our group coming out um they you know we're a little bit flexible um as far as uh keeping it reasonably priced for our group um so that was really important to me um so i'm really uh pleasantly uh surprised uh with the courses that we're able to get and maintain uh maintain kind of that price structure and right keep it affordable i mean we know how golf how expensive golf is and everybody is starting to raise their prices and it just it gets really difficult so i'm really thrilled with the uh with the courses that we're able to uh put together yeah look i mean it it looks like you got a really good schedule and and and again comparing you know looking at some of the numbers for some of the same courses that you had last year you you you've got really good turnout and that's really what what you need you know especially if you could open up at university university of Michigan it's gonna be a nice day it's gonna be it's gonna be sunny and and 70 we'll say that that that's Chris's wheelhouse sunny and 70 yeah you know what perfect uh you know it if we get even partly sunny and 65 um at that time of the year heck even 60 is comfortable uh that's gonna be a beautiful day so you you've been playing on tour for a while what what's your favorite course to play on tour that's not a Michigan course favorite course not in Michigan um you know what when I played uh it's been several years but um it's the one in Hiltonhead on shoot why am I drawing a blank it's where they the whole they uh the PGA event after the masters oh harbortown harbortown yeah harbortown that's that's gotta be one of my favorites hold on just a second hey Dan go go ahead and log off and and we'll let you know when you come back um come back in it'll probably be like a couple minutes after nine there we go awesome yeah uh so you know you know they they just reopened uh Harbortown they they did a major renovation they shut it down after the PGA event a couple couple weeks after the PJ event and um um if I remember correctly they just opened it up a few weeks ago they did a I saw on Facebook or something where they where they were going through a lot of the changes so so it's um it's just uh just open back up and you know Chris Icebreaker is it's thirty less than a month away less a month away so how about that so you can you come down yeah do you could you come I'd love to be able to get down there and play in that um I haven't yet um but I'm gonna what's that so come on down I trust me I want to um the priority right now still lies with baseball so if uh if there's if there's an opportunity and I can break away without missing any games uh I'm there yeah we I I I get it especially if this is the last go at it you don't you don't want to miss anything and um that that that's that's way more important because Harbortown will be there next year anyway.

SPEAKER_03:

So yeah when I came down um gosh it would spend three years maybe three years ago I came down for the nationals event and uh just being able to walk around Harbortown and the plantation seapines plantation and whatnot brings back a lot of really good memories and just it it it kind of stirred that urge that I needed to play that course again because it chewed me up really bad the first time I played it.

SPEAKER_05:

Well it it chews a lot of people up you know that that's a that's a course where you really have to think and you know I'm not talking for Chris but at least one of us here on here when when you gotta do a lot of thinking not a whole lot of good happens. Yep as you can tell because we're we were playing with that's that's the first course yeah that's the first course that I ever played that really taught me that it's not just about hitting the fairway it's about hitting this 20 by 20 uh patch of uh fairway uh to be able to get to the grain um otherwise you know I found myself trying to work it in and out of trees the entire day makes for a long round yeah we had uh Joe Jasper's you know the uh he's a champ flight player on the golf week side he's he's won seven or eight national championships and had him on and he had to talk about that course and how he plays that course and you know when you talk to somebody like that who's who's a really good golfer um and hearing him get around the course how he gets around it in in the thinking and how he picks his spot doesn't matter what club it is he's gonna pick a spot that he knows that he can hit that's not gonna get him into trouble and still be able to make a score and he does that on that course and and he'll shoot one or two under um as an amateur play in that course it's it's amazing to to watch him to hear him talk about it and then to watch him go out and do it and then you know people like us we're we're we're spraying balls all over the place and no mat no matter how much we want to to do the same thing that he's doing it's it's just we just we're just not able to do that. So but I love love that course. Well well Jib yeah what one last thing love it as as as we leave you tonight number one thank you so much for joining us but what's one thing that you want your members or future members to take away from you as a new tour director?

SPEAKER_03:

You know the the one thing that I I would like everybody to take away is I'm really kind of a no nonsense guy. I want to come out and compete um I want to win the trophy as much as anybody else does but I want to do it fair and square. You're not gonna find me cheating um I'm not you know moving the ball around I want to make sure that everybody else does the same thing and plays by the rule of golf and and that code that we have that's really important. We've got a tremendous group of guys and a couple of women uh as well um you know what they're great people and when you're done playing the end of the day and to be able to meet up at the 19th hole and share a story share a laugh uh that's what I've really come to enjoy too well that's really what you anybody in in Michigan that wants to be a part of that I'd love to have you well again Jim th thanks so much for for spending some time with us tonight and and hopefully we'll get you on sometime uh middle of the season and catch up and see how things are going.

SPEAKER_05:

Yeah look forward to it I appreciate it take care of a good one let's take a break from the show to hear about Trickston's ZX Mark II irons a great iron set needs more than good look it's gotta be fast and gotta be pure but good looks never hurt either the all new ZX Mark II irons from Strickston Chris when when we get new tour directors we're obviously going to miss the the old tour director and and Dennis North did a phenomenal job. He he stood uh he stood that senior Michigan tour up did a really good job um they were around a 150 member tour um always had good turnouts with their with their tournaments and so replacing um replacing him and uh picking up from you know the I believe he's the first person that that that had that senior tour. But um Jim Jim's got big shoes to fill. And uh he he's gonna do well he he's built a really good schedule.

SPEAKER_02:

You know I could kind of compared his um schedule that he did with the one from last year some of the same courses some some new courses so I obviously gonna be some be some new things but I think it's gonna do really well yeah I mean you know we do this every time it's the off season going to new season we have new tour directors you know guys leave that they want to spend more time with their family you know whatever it may the situation may be but they always leave um the tour in the best hands yeah and I think the people who who take over are people that um they trust to be able to take over you know kind of their baby these tours are our babies um so I you you do say big shoes to fill but I think you know with the people that we that we decide to to take over I think we know as tour directors that they can fill those shoes um and it's just a matter of of having those members trust the new person because I know I I I came from somebody who um you know ran ran the tour for a couple years and and it it's hard when you're the new tour director and you don't know you know you know you know the guys in your flight if you're playing you don't know everybody and having to get to know everybody and then getting to know the new members that don't know who you are so it's kind of like fresh in their minds. Um it's just a lot of fun to get to meet these guys and I mean I enjoy this part of our of our year that we get to go through all the with all these new tour directors uh kind of get to know them so that when we do see them face to face at nationals uh it's not anything that we have to introduce we already know i exactly now you know the the the new St.

SPEAKER_05:

Louis tour director's got he's got big shoes to fill as well um taking over for Tyler Cardwell we're gonna miss Tyler I said I sent him a note the other day and and uh he replied with a thank you and and he's still gonna be around but what I just noticed is he's the new tour director was also the point sport champion from last year.

SPEAKER_01:

So we got no that's that's a little sus.

SPEAKER_05:

I don't know about all that we have to that why don't we just go ahead and bring him in and and and just attack him right right from the from the start. So so please everybody let's go ahead and and welcome the the new St.

SPEAKER_04:

Louis tour director Daniel Van Meter and then you were supposed to do it and I did it Daniel welcome to the show hey thank you I don't know if you've noticed this but you know we we discussed something and then somebody can't follow directions and that was me same with me I jumped on you a little early no you're you're you're you're good um so Chris has a problem with you before we even get started that you're gonna have to address it's not a problem it's not a problem um but you you know we we were looking as as we're we're getting to know all the new the the new tour directors um last year is your first year playing so obviously you know you made a great impression uh to be able to be one of one of the top people that that they wanted to have you take over but you can't be the new tour director and the flight champion of the previous year that's just unfair that's what I I've been told too uh with my wife she was kind of mentioning that too like uh you're gonna be out running the tour and playing um Tyler did it last year too um Tyler was the B flight winner um he won the points race as the as the year and the season went on um Tyler won B and I won C. Um after that tournament that last tournament I went to Tyler and said I'm coming for you next year man I'm right on the verge I'm right on the verge of getting the B group so I told him at the end of the year that I was coming after him next year.

SPEAKER_05:

Oh that that that's awesome. So before we start talking about golf tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got involved in the tour you know what did you during the day when you when you're not you know winning points championships.

SPEAKER_04:

Yep so I grew up just about an hour north of St. Louis um went to a small town um school called North Green um after high school went on to college I actually went to college down in St. Louis um went to college at St. Louis College of Pharmacy um it's got a different name now they got different degrees down there right there by Barnes Hospital. Forest Park was the course that was closest to us there almost walking distance basically from where we were going to school down there. Went to college there spent a lot of time six years down in St. Louis played some different courses and things down there. Never did golf professionally or um against anybody else or um with the schools or anything like that. They didn't have it at that point in time but I played a lot when I was in high school and growing up I would ride my bike to the golf course back when I was a teenager when we could get out there. So uh the course I grew up on actually had sand greens um didn't even have grass greens. I don't know if you've seen that or ever heard of that before but no I've seen that before yeah so you hit the ball in the green and then had to drag the green drag the sand and smooth it out to make your putt. So I grew up there became a pharmacist um at the College of Pharmacy. I've worked just over 20 years now as a pharmacist for Walmart um hit 20 years back in September. I'm a pharmacy manager uh up in Jacksonville Illinois at Walmart right now um got married in 2008 um to my wife uh Karis uh then uh I've got several kids after that all five of them um my oldest boy is seven several I got me a basketball team absolutely uh my oldest boy's 17 uh or 16 I'm sorry about to turn 17 uh him and his the second boy we had Chase is 15 um they're both part of uh the golf team um here at the school um I'm one of the coaches I helped coach um their golf team here in town um and then I've got a daughter that's 13 and then uh we went for our fourth and final child and so be it we had twins so what happens yeah so we've got twin does uh identical twin boys that are seven years old and getting them into golf as well you you gotta find a hobby my friend I know TV or something I don't have anything to do no more kids no yeah well well you you said you know your two oldest play high school golf you gonna get them to help you out on this tour oh yeah they they're looking forward to it big time Logan's sitting over here watching you know every little bit that's going on so um they're excited about it too they're they're gonna be helping us with you know setting up and stuff like that too and we're gonna look into seeing them um trying to get out and play too I I know there was another uh gentleman last year um that I played in a group and he was only 15 playing too um playing against this so uh I think our boys would love to go down there and play with him and play a couple rounds with him and have some younger guys coming up into that competition as well I mean our our youngest correct me if I'm wrong Tim our youngest national champion is 13 years was 13 years old at B flight if I'm not mistaken. Yeah I think so 12-13 but I think 13 is right so anything can happen they get him out early exactly yes sir and and you know it it gives them the competitive practice that they that they won't have in the offseason yeah you know when when high school comes around they're ready to go yeah I I think it'd be good for my boys and learning how to deal with some of that pressure situations and dealing with the pressure um you know when it comes to regionals and sectionals and that type of stuff even with their high school you know you feel the pressure out on the tour um I I love that part of it I think it brought out the best in me to be honest with you uh gave me a uh much bigger focus when it was coming down when it was only me playing as an individual on the tour. Yeah absolutely you know so so being your first year on the tour what was what was something that really kind of stood out for you that really kind of drew you in that made you want to be a tour director so um obviously golf's been everything for me the last couple years not going to lie about it um this all started last year um right around this time with Christmas time coming up um I had been looking into the tour and looking at different tours to join um this was the one that I was looking into the golf week it worked well uh well with my schedule it was back in St. Louis back where I went to college um that that was a big plus for me um getting to play different courses uh playing different areas um you know we just got a several smaller courses up around this area so playing some of these bigger better courses really drew me into it so last year uh Christmas time my my wife wrote me a letter um put it in a present um and she paid for my membership tour to to get on this tour and then get out there oh yeah um two of the two of the biggest things just the competition uh and I really got to know some of the guys on the tour like you guys were just talking about um I got to know a lot of the guys in C group and D group um playing out there definitely looking forward to meeting the guys in A and B group um I've already had a uh uh one person I've reached out to or they reached out to me and we've had a conversation and he's ready to go next year and already practicing and getting ready to go.

SPEAKER_05:

That that's awesome. And I I love that your wife bought the membership for you. You know kind of kind of reminds me of my buddy James Briggs and Chris we've talked about him I I met James at a at a uh at a golf show you know when I was tour director of DC and his wife was giving him a hard time and said you you think you're so good you should join this and and he says okay I'll I'll join and now she's upset because that's all he does. He travels around God bless him he he's he's retired twice and that's all he does is play golf. Good for him.

SPEAKER_04:

My wife and then I I played a couple tournaments and just a couple tournaments into it my dad joined uh my dad's retired um he's playing in the D group um and he he joined and uh went after it too um my wife's gonna be you know a big part of this tour too helping us out um Tyler and Jamie did a great job tag teaming it um and they they've really helped me um they've been in instrumental with me uh getting me ready for this letting me know how things go how to get things set up how to get it rolling so I've appreciated everything Tyler's done and Jamie uh they've both been in contact with me throughout the whole process um and like you said Tyler's ready he's he's ready to come back and play some too yeah you know he he's such a good guy Tyler and and Jamie yeah I've known Tyler for well man probably seven eight years now uh he I call him a kid he's a great great kid great

SPEAKER_05:

Great wife. I know his dad. He plays out in Kansas. And um obviously sorry to see him go, but glad he's staying and playing. Yeah. It's it's it's just kind of the the you know the the arc of of being a tour director.

SPEAKER_04:

But how's your schedule looking? So uh I've got six tournaments already uh confirmed. Um Jamie and Tyler had started working on the schedule. Um they had reached out to most of the courses that they played this past year. Um, some of them just don't fit with our schedule. Um, there's some of them that did. Um so six of them I've got set right now moving forward to the next year. I'm waiting for about four or five different courses to um see if they can move their dates around and change things around for me. Um once I get that back from them here pretty soon, I'll maybe start contacting some other courses. Um I talked to Tyler. We're gonna try to get upwards of um close to 15 tournaments we can. I think we had 11 last year. Um so some people have um recommended some different courses down there that they didn't play last year um that we're looking into maybe trying to hit this year as well. Um I've reached out to one of the other uh tour directors, um Jeff, I think he was from down south or uh Kentucky, maybe. Jeff Bass, maybe. I can I'm not sure if that's saying his name right, but um reached out to Emma Bash trying to do to do a you know a combined tournament as well. He he's reached out to me about that as well. But yeah, I'm trying to give the courses that we played last year a chance to move their dates around uh to fit our schedule um and go from there and then you know get that posted by at least the end of this month for sure. Yeah, Kentucky's Ed Early. They're what now? Kentucky is Ed Early. Oh, maybe it's oh he was uh Indiana, Evansville, Indiana.

SPEAKER_05:

Oh, Jeff Please, yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_04:

Yeah, there you go. I say I wasn't sure what his name was. Yep. I I've talked to him and reached out to him. Um you were talking about Tyler's dad, um, Terry. Um I got to meet him at French Lick. Um, me and my dad went over to French Lick the regional last year, yep, and played there. We got to meet Terry and um the second day my dad was paired up with him, so he got to play with uh that he got to play the the Pete Dye course with Terry that second day, and my dad became friends with him too. So, yep, it's been great to get to know some of the guys on the tour.

SPEAKER_05:

Yeah, that that's awesome. You you gotta tell Chris about that that uh French lick tournament, trying trying to get him out there, trying to get him to away from to be able to get out there. Unbelievable.

SPEAKER_04:

Uh I can't say enough about that place.

SPEAKER_02:

Uh you have to convince Gabe. I've already told you this numerous times.

SPEAKER_04:

We we me and dad the day the day before we played that tournament, um, dad and I walked and went out to that course the night before and went up to the top um clubhouse there and just looked at that place and stood there and went, wow.

SPEAKER_05:

Yeah, it's crazy.

SPEAKER_04:

Un unbelievable. I mean, every every t-shot you you're hitting, it's great. You know, they have caddies there for you. That's one of the tournaments you have to get a caddy for, but you know, playing it the first time, you you need it. Um, but but it it was absolutely amazing. Um, love the course. And let's let's put it this way. I got back the next day after that tournament, uh, and I put in for vacation for next year when they were having the regional next year in 2026. And you know, me and dad's already planned on going that, and we're talking about taking the family with us too. There you go.

SPEAKER_05:

That's awesome. Yeah, it it's it's actually a pretty good trip, Chris. If you ever you know want to go to a good place to play golf, um that'd be a good place to go.

SPEAKER_02:

Uh anyways, anyways, so I I see on the website you have the birdie club. You're gonna keep keep doing that or anything new that you're bringing uh for next year?

SPEAKER_04:

Yeah, so those are the things that we've sat down with the with the older boys and the other guys um trying to keep some of the stuff that he's done. Uh the birdie club, if you get so many birdies within each group, uh they get a card um and do that card at the end of the year. Uh I know Tyler and last year had a had a get together at the end of the year and kind of gave away all the awards. Um, I thought that was really cool, really neat. Those are all things we're still trying to hash out because it's been so quick. Um just taking over within the last week or two. Um, but we we've sat down trying to come up with different ideas and different things that we can do. But I I thought that was a pretty neat thing that he did with the birdie club. Um, you get so many birdies throughout the entire season. You get your own basically a baseball card, football card, whatever you're gonna call it. Um, but yeah, there's a lot of things that he did that Tyler did last year that we're gonna continue um into this next year, too, as well. And try to um one of the things we want to make it about is make it about the players. Um, maybe get some more pictures and videos of them out on the course um making putts on 18, you know, getting videos of champions making the putt on 18th green to win it, and posting that and sharing it with that player so that they have that information, they have that memory going forward and make make it about the players and you know let them have some fun with that as well.

unknown:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05:

It's about the players and and making sure that they have a good experience. Chris, I don't know if you if you're looking if you saw the uh uh those birdie club cars, they're pretty cool.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, I did see them, and and that's why I brought it up because I think that's a pretty cool idea. Um, and you know it's recon recognition. Birdies are hard to make, uh, especially as as you get you know in the B C and D flight. So uh just to be able to say you're part of a club is is pretty cool.

SPEAKER_04:

Yeah, one of the things I didn't get last year, I'll be honest. So so so you won the points championship, you can get any birdies? Oh, I had some birdies, but you have to get uh like C group, but you have to get like 10 birdies throughout the year. I think I had five maybe for the year.

SPEAKER_05:

Okay, okay, but still five.

SPEAKER_04:

Each flight you had to get some of your birdies, yep.

SPEAKER_07:

Okay.

SPEAKER_04:

That's why I put it we we definitely want to uh get more exposure a little bit on social media and doing those things for the players is for sure.

SPEAKER_05:

Yeah, and and as and as you get into this and you know you you get into your own rhythm and you'll you'll see what's gonna work for you and and it's it's gonna be good, it's gonna be great. You know, some of the things that that Tyler did um over the years, phenomenal stuff. I mean, just just really good things. And um, you know, if you if you model some of those things, it's not not many of the other tours are doing things that well, and and you and you'll be fine.

SPEAKER_04:

Yeah, Ty Tyler's gonna be there for me. I I've talked to him multiple times, him and Jamie both. So they like I said, they've they've been huge help, you know, moving us forward and getting what we need um going forward. And like I said, I'm gonna continue a lot of the stuff that he did. Um, I enjoyed it out there when he was doing it. Um you know, had awesome trophies, and uh he was a great guy to be around and good camaraderie, and that was always fun with them. And it was always good to be out there with the guys and playing some golf.

SPEAKER_05:

Absolutely. So as as we wrap things up, what's one thing you'd want the uh members to know about you and what to look forward to as you go into the 2026 season?

SPEAKER_04:

So, uh I mean, going back to all the guys that have played it in the past, come out, give it a try again. Like I said, we're gonna be there for you guys. Um, we're gonna try to make this as most enjoyable for you. Um, if you have questions or concerns, suggestions, anything like that, bring it up to me. Uh, I've been a manager for years and years. I'm one of the easiest guys to get along with and hang out with. Um, but I'll I'll take criticism like no other two. Um if you guys have suggestions, comments, concerns, bring it to me. You know, I don't have any issue with that, and I'll I'll address them and do do our best to you know get each and every player on that tour um out there and ready to play and get to meet all the guys and have some fun. Well, that's awesome. And I know you're gonna do really well.

SPEAKER_05:

Thanks, Tim. I appreciate that. So make sure you tell our friends out there. You know, I know a bunch of the bunch of the guys on on the uh St. Louis tour. Tell them we said hi, and and hopefully we'll we'll see you guys here uh down the road.

SPEAKER_04:

Thanks, Tim. Thanks, Chris.

SPEAKER_05:

Let's take a break from the show to hear about Strixon's ZX Mark II drivers.

SPEAKER_00:

ZX Mark II drivers are for major players, major winners, major power. All new ZX Mark II drivers only from Strixon.

SPEAKER_02:

Tim, uh, Daniel just seems like a warm-hearted tour director. We're all kind of the same, but you know, uh off air we got to meet his family who walked in right when we were done. Um they look excited. When he said he had two teenage boys, those boys are not teenagers. Those are some those are some grown men that he's got there. Um, but no, it it's exciting that you know to get to meet these new new directors, but I think he's gonna be one that is um excited to see every every event. Um he's gonna remember you by name and and talk to you and and welcome you like it's your first time.

unknown:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05:

His oldest son, uh the camera angle look looks like he's almost seven feet tall. He he he's probably 6'2, 6'3, easy. But he, I mean, dude, dude, it was huge.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. Put him on the line. Put him on the old line. I'll run right behind him. See?

SPEAKER_05:

But yeah, they I mean, and and it looks like they're gonna be doing this as a family affair. It's not just uh Daniel and his wife. The kids are involved. Um, his Daniel's father plays as well. So, I mean, it's a it's it's gonna be a true family affair with with with in with them in St. Louis. Look forward to being there.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. Yeah, and I mean as you see around the country, you you could throw a dart to any one of the tours and someone in their family's involved, whether it's the wife, the kids. Yeah. You know, you go Arizona, uh, Gabe's daughters help all the time, and his wife helps. You go to Dallas, his wife helps, you go to um Kansas, and his daughter helps. I mean, you you go around around the the country and everybody's helping. Uh my oldest is getting to that point where he's gonna be asking for more money for high school stuff. So come on, you're gonna learn how to how to do live scoring and and get some money that way. So uh it that's what makes I think our tour special is the fact that the people that we also involve in this um make it feel like family.

SPEAKER_05:

Exactly. Exactly. But but again, they're they're gonna do great stuff. And we've got uh I think we've we we've got a couple more new uh new tour directors coming as well. I don't I don't know if they've been announced yet, but uh so I so I don't want to I don't want to say concern I don't want to say anything say anything out term, but uh I think there's a couple more out there.

SPEAKER_02:

Nice. I can't wait to meet them. Um because it's a lot easier when you when we meet them now and then get to put a uh person to the interview and nationals than meeting them for the first time there. Because I that I'll tell you this, when I was a first time director and and I went uh other than Gabe, I don't know where to go to. I was lost, a lost little puppy. And uh it can be very intimidating. Um so it's it's good that we can at least give them at least two people to to come talk to. And I mean we got the big table in the back, so we're hard to to miss.

SPEAKER_05:

Exactly. Exactly. One thing we gotta do, and and I'm putting on you to remember this because I can't remember my wife's birthday. We've we've been married another 30 years. We need to get pictures of us doing that at at at next year's uh uh tour directory night. Because we we don't we don't have any pictures of that. And um somebody was asking me for something to put on to on promotional material, and so since we didn't have any, we lost out on on something that uh right not that I again I look at it like this way got a face for radio and you know voice for silent movies. Who nobody really wants to see my face.

SPEAKER_02:

Uh I think it's the other way around.

SPEAKER_05:

Voice for radio, face for silent movies?

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05:

I think no, it's a face it's a face for radio and a voice for silent movies.

SPEAKER_02:

Sure. Oh my god. Can you remember this? Okay, can you remember to get pictures? I will remember to get pictures. Actually, you know who you know who might have a picture that we could reach out to? Gina. I think she took pictures.

SPEAKER_05:

That's that that opportunity's gone. I mean we can we can we can still ask her, we can still ask her, but but yeah, that opportunity is gone. We gotta start where you go.

SPEAKER_02:

We tried. I didn't know, you didn't ask me.

SPEAKER_05:

Well Jen asked me if I again I'm I'm being I'm treading very lightly here on this. Okay. So Jen asked me if I took any pictures while we were doing the interviews. And I said I'm I I could do lots of things.

SPEAKER_02:

Anyway, yeah, yeah. I didn't do that.

SPEAKER_05:

I I can I can't do that.

SPEAKER_07:

That'd be tough. That'd be tough.

SPEAKER_05:

So I'm I'm I'll just leave it there and and I I know I should have taken those pictures. Anyway, yo, you've only you've got some really good stuff going on too. I don't know if you saw this, but you know, you you'd mentioned in in the last episode you had uh a TV station out and newspaper out and and and the the mayor, right? Did you know you were you ended you guys ended up in the uh in the newspaper too? There's a there's a post about it on on Facebook.

SPEAKER_02:

I didn't know that, no.

SPEAKER_05:

What are you doing?

SPEAKER_02:

I you know, there's been so much that's come out of that that it it I mean, they may have told me and I just tell you what I'm I'm just gonna I'm just gonna share my screen and no no, it's I'm not sharing Chris on the shelf.

SPEAKER_05:

Not it just okay. This is this is real not only did are you in a paper, I mean so this number here showing that you you know the amount of money that you that that just that one tournament injected into the local economy. That's huge.

SPEAKER_02:

I'm gonna put my reading glasses on for this one. Here we go. You can read it. Yeah, that's awesome. The Sun Country Sun. Wow, 50k boost.

SPEAKER_05:

How awesome is that?

SPEAKER_02:

That's a lot. That's that's awesome. I mean, for for a uh a town that you know it's got two exits, one to enter, one to exit. Uh I I'm glad we were able to do that. Uh took my wife out to a steakhouse that uh I've never been, didn't even know it was it existed there. Okay. And uh thing was packed, packed, and we rolled in in our our hoodies, and the owner came to talk to us to ask us what was going on, because he had served guys in blue and guys in red. And we told him, I hope the guys in blue tip better, because they're losing. Um so that's awesome. That's that's a cool picture, actually.

SPEAKER_05:

Yeah, it is. Now, just just so everybody knows, you all those those shirts are actually red. I mean, for me, they're showing up as pink.

SPEAKER_02:

Um they're red, as you can see here, they're red.

SPEAKER_05:

They're red. But but but again, you know, it's that's a nice job by you and Gabe to to get that kind of um publicity for it. Uh so let's make sure that the Dennis and Jennifer know about that and and uh um you because you never know where where that could lead as well.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, I'm gonna have to go and like that and share that with Gabe. Looks like it was yesterday, but um again, you know, that there's a lot of cool things coming out, uh, some other things that are gonna be um announced here in the next couple of days uh that I'm excited to share. Uh can't really talk about that one, but uh you know, it was a great time. But it it showed me how much honestly social media can help the tour. Um learning on on my own how how to enhance that for this next year. Uh honestly, this last month I've felt like I've learned a lot. So if you're not following us on social media, uh get ready, follow us, because we're gonna have a lot of things, you know, event announcements each month, and and just promote the the hell out of it. Um that that's what my guys deserve. Guys and gals.

SPEAKER_05:

Exactly. So I I really do also like what you're doing with it with the 12 Days of Christmas. I I like the the player interviews. Um I like yeah, I mean you had Dennis on there for for the first one, and and you know, just just other guys coming up and and kind of doing uh uh their thing before you do the giveaway. Um which I I think it's great. I think it's a nice touch. I think it looks looks good. I think you know the you not dressed up as Chris on a shelf is I have my own little elf on the shelf, all right. You know, I I like the Christmas tree as it's as it spins around. You I just want to let you know you I mean you're doing a good job. Um now I I didn't see the last couple. What what was the biggest thing you gave away? What was the biggest thing you gave away?

SPEAKER_02:

Um I you know, as we uh as we start, it starts off small, you know, and and it builds up throughout the 12 days. Um the biggest thing is a major event of your choice. Okay, good. Um and I mean that that allows you to pick, you know, from from five that we have. Uh and some of these events they might not decide to go to. And because they have this choice, now they can add one to their schedule. Um you know, we had a sponsor giveaway a$50 Visa gift card, um, which was awesome. Uh couple different local events, uh just to enhance, you know, that one person to go. And they may bring a friend now, now that that it's a free roll, and maybe able to bring a friend, uh, you know, some tour credits, things of that nature. It's it's the best that I can do to give back. Um and you know. as of this episode I think we're close to fifty five sixty members um which is awesome so that'll be the there's there's more giveaways to come but uh the most that we can give back to the to the members I feel is is the best way for us to show our appreciation.

SPEAKER_06:

Right.

SPEAKER_05:

Well it's working. I mean you got you guys are doing a good job it looks good and all those other good things so so keep up the good work.

SPEAKER_02:

Um I was kind of hoping maybe you you give away a trip to to uh um for the podcast to to come out to to uh uh to Tupac who am I gonna give that trip to to us yeah to us give away to us you know it as as much heat I got from my assistant winning winning a a little side games on the day that he introed it um we'll just have to talk you gotta admit that was funny uh it it was it it was especially because one I forgot to erase my name which I should have done that from the beginning because it almost landed on me which would have been even more funnier I didn't want see here's the thing with these videos I don't do any retakes what we get is what we get what you get um before we used to be live and now all these restrictions on social media about going live you have to have so many followers and this and that so you get one take and the winners the winner and right I hope you believe me but that's as that's as raw as I can get is is having him win and it just happened to be a crazy coincidence. But you and me will talk on the side and we're one of these days we're gonna get you out to two to Tupac Arizona and so you can see the madness that that I called my second home. That'd be awesome. That'd be awesome. I'm already ready to go I had to miss it the this year you know with with getting sick and all um so I'm already looking forward to it uh whether it's the event or the rider cup I I just can't wait.

SPEAKER_05:

Well you you know I don't want to burst anybody's bubble here but we're 12 days away from the season open yeah oh I know 12 days away um there was a people people must think I I spend too much time on Facebook. I I really don't spend a lot of time on Facebook at all but I opened it up and it just so happened that uh there was a golf pro from French Lick Country Club. Okay from he was in Hilton Head and proposed to his girlfriend on the 18th at Seapines at Hart. Okay um and talked about how how nice the re the the renovations was it's the second time he's played the course it it it's beautiful it's in great shape and and so this just happened he I think it was posted oh man it was probably probably a week ago that I saw it. And so I mean it's less than a month out of of when we're gonna be there innovation. Yeah well of of when we're gonna be there. So I mean it's right so it's a it's it's in really good shape. And uh uh the grass was green I mean it look it looked really good from from the pictures that they took so and just so happened that guys got guys from French lake too.

SPEAKER_02:

Right. Hopefully the weather cooperates I know it's been cold a couple times uh but that I mean i if you go on the golf week website and you look at the regionals you you could really I know this is a uh a you know a cliche I guess you can say but you could put that schedule on a wall throw a dart and anyone that you land on you're gonna have a great time absolutely absolutely um if we have a millionaire sponsor who wants to sponsor us to go to every single one um please step forward and I mean Tim will we'll make the time to go to every single one throughout the year.

SPEAKER_05:

Yep um well we we would be able to go to every single one because there's some that are playing um same week as but we'll flip a we'll flip a coin on that one. Yeah we could we could do a Saturday in one day and you know get you know yeah private take a private jet to Sunday and you know we've we'd be good to go.

SPEAKER_02:

Just just throwing out there if there's anybody who wants to to sponsor a segment let us know um but yeah I mean I'm looking at right now you I've been to Western States Icebreaker great time I've been to the Ohio regional last year amazing time um looking down here Great Lakes regional you and me were at that was fantastic the D flighters off of day one may not fit or day two may not feel the same but still a great time uh Cajun Classic excellent time Big Cedar Lodge excellent time uh TPC Scottsdale I mean you know my opinion on that just made sure is is that just above average I mean is that it's got a special place in my heart so I can't grade that one okay all right I guess I I'm trying to be non-biased here but I understand that one's got a special place and if you're gonna have a good time trying to convince Gabe to let me go.

SPEAKER_05:

I know it's I don't think it's happening ever.

SPEAKER_02:
