Hello and welcome back to another episode of Real Talk with D everybody. It's good to be back for another long-winded episode here. But today we're gonna be going uh we're gonna be discussing another recap for you with our newest show that just premiered last week, Dancing with the Stars, The Next Pro. Now we were a little up in the air about whether or not we even wanted to watch this show, let alone do a podcast on it. But at the end of the day, we just figured we might as well. So because we're so curious if you guys would be interested in what we even have to say about it.
SPEAKER_02But And I like dance and I always have opinions on it. So here it's.
SPEAKER_00I always have an opinion on everything. Exactly. But now we're not just commenting on the stars, we're commenting on potential pros. So I don't know. This is uh dangerous waters we're treading on here, so but we'll see. We'll see how it goes. So, anyways, let's get to it. So the dance the whole purpose of the show is of course to bring on a future pro for the upcoming season, which means we are probably going to be losing a pro from the show. Do you have any thoughts about who that could be?
SPEAKER_02Oh, if it's a guy Glub.
SPEAKER_00You think it's gonna be Glub? Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I like him. I think he's a really great dancer, but I think last season with him potentially being cut, and then he kind of made a comment about it. He was brought back because they gave him Hilaria as like the controversial person. And then like just he's he's gone to more adult content, so I just don't think they'll want that.
SPEAKER_00I understand. What if it's a girl? Who do you think uh who do you think they would get rid of as a girl?
SPEAKER_02I can see Whitney taking a break because I know her and um Carson probably want to have another kid, if I remember. And I mean, like, she just won with Robert Irwin. It was such a high. Her finesse app, which I use, is like doing really well. So I can see her kind of just mainly focusing on that more than anything else.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I would be sad to see her go though.
SPEAKER_02Well, I would be so sad because I think people also really want Haley Bills.
SPEAKER_00That's the thing. It's like, why not bring Haley up? What's the whole hold up with that?
SPEAKER_02I mean, they could. If it's a guy who wins, they could bring her up. So it could be like new guy and Haley.
SPEAKER_00New girl.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So we'll see.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, I'm just curious what made them want to go through this and why none of the other pros had to go through this ringer, like, for example, Jan or Riley or any of them.
SPEAKER_02So I think when it comes to that, it's like, you know, they thought of a new idea. I don't know, like, part of me thinks, like, oh, maybe they wanted us to get excited about a new pro and like we get to know them before they come on the show. But it's like we really don't get a say, like, it'd be cool if the ending is like, here's two finalists, you get to vote, and then we vote on who the no pro no new pro is with the last two, but I don't think they're gonna do that. It sounds like they announce it. So like I'm assuming it's to get to know it, bring in new people, get excited. Because while they might not be picked to be a pro this time, next time they might, you never know. And I guess that's my question. Are we gonna do this every season?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, or is it just gonna be this season?
SPEAKER_02Is it just like this season, and maybe next season they skip and then they do it the season after? Because at some point you have to have some continuous thing with the um pros because they're the returning cast, they're the ones that they're they've become the stars themselves as well. So you wanna you don't wanna just like continually replace people. So is it gonna be you're only guaranteed a spot for one year and then next year you're not back? I don't know.
SPEAKER_00It's really I'm also sure they're basing this off of how well this show does for this, which it sounds like this first episode did relatively received really well, really good feedback from people. I'm definitely indifferent, but we'll we'll get there. Um, anyways, everybody, let's go ahead and get to it. So the series features 12 up-and-coming professional dancers. That being said, it does seem like not all of them are professional ballroom dancers.
SPEAKER_02But this is my issue, is like Robert's like, oh, we searched the world of ballroom far and wide, and you guys are the gold standard. How far did you search? Like, I'm like, they're all wonderful dancers, but some of them aren't even ballroom dancers, or they just started ballroom. And the ballroom world, while not super big, there are phenomenal dancers who like we have seen who I know would have done this show if they were offered it. Um, and I'm very confused. It's like, but some of these people you didn't even find from the ballroom world.
SPEAKER_00And FYI, everybody, we're not just talking about us. We're talking we're talking about plenty of other people. If you guys, if this is your first time listening, Monisa and I do dance ballroom professionally. We do teach, but in no way, shape, or form is she talking about us. But there's other amazing ballroom pros out there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't I don't do ballroom full time anymore. Like I still take, I still train, I still teach, but um, I'm a kids minister and like that's that's where my heart is right now. But I love dancing and I love I love dancing with the stars. But like the other thing that irritates me is it's like they're picking like these people who are commercial dancers, but they're not dance teachers. And that was one thing I loved about Pasha and Danny is they taught dance. Like that, and it's not just people who come to you who know how to dance, it's a whole thing. Even if, even if you've never taken ballroom, if you have some dance background, it helps you. Sorry, not sorry to all those people who like to contradict me. It does help you. I came into ballroom with a background in ballet and it helped me. So, you know, it's like, why are like we want people to learn to teach? It's not just about how well you dance and how well you choreograph. It's can you actually teach the technique and pull it out of the person? Like, we have some wonderful pro dancers on the show, but they weren't the best teachers. And then you've had some, you know, wonderful teachers who may not be the best dancers, but man, do they like and that's the same thing in the ballroom world. You you get that someone who may not be the best dancer, but they're a phenomenal teacher and their student looks great. I don't know, man.
SPEAKER_00That's part of the reason why I was skeptical about this show. Number one, when they first advertised it, it looked like they were gonna combine a dance show with a reality TV show, like Bachelor or Love Island or whatever. And I I don't know, you know more of those shows than I do, but I'm nervous that they're gonna still go down that route. And I don't, I don't want to see drama. I want to see dancing.
SPEAKER_02And the dance world is drama.
SPEAKER_00It is drama, but we already have enough of that. You know, we don't need like I don't know if they're gonna focus on relationship drama or anything like that, but I I hope they don't. But that's what makes me a little nervous to continue with the show. I still will, but anyways, let's not waste any time. Let's go ahead and go over our contestants who I think you actually know a little bit more of their background than I do, but we'll just go in order here. Let's go and start with Briar Nolay.
SPEAKER_02So she contemporary, I will say more acrobatic dancer. She does some really cool flips and tricks. Um, her mom was great. I've seen her dance on TV, on social media quite a bit. She was on this dance show called The Next Step, and they filmed it like a reality show, but it was not reality. And that's what I feel like this show is gonna be like a dance with stars next pro. Um, so she she's very popular online. She started ballroom two-ish years ago, and she started this whole social media thing saying, I want to become a pro on dancing with the stars, so I'm gonna start my ballroom, and my goal is to be a pro by next year. And that was a no. And then as soon as I heard the show was going, I'm like, Brian Relay is gonna be on it, I have no doubt. And she's a beautiful dancer, but you can tell she hasn't trained a ballroom that long. Right. So I know they picked her because of her social media following. She has like a million followers, but that shouldn't qualify. Like, again, she's a beautiful dancer, but you search the ballworm world and you picked a contemporary dancer.
SPEAKER_00Not only that, they picked a hip-hop dancer. Let's move on to Tristan Sanders.
SPEAKER_02So Tristan does teach at a Dance With Me Studio. If you don't know, Dance With Me is owned by Valen Mack Schmirkowski, and they operate all over the United States. They have a bunch of studios. So he teaches for them, but he started as a hip-hop dancer, and he I'm sure he's a wonderful teacher. But I've seen some of his dance videos, and I'm a little worried about the technique aspect.
SPEAKER_00Okay. All right. Well, next up, this is somebody who does know their ballroom and probably has a little bit of leeway on the show. Stephanie Sosa.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So she she was troop two seasons ago, and her brother's been on the show for a while. He was troop, now he's a pro.
SPEAKER_00Ezra.
SPEAKER_02Ezra, yes. Um, I she doesn't have my favorite style. I think she focuses way too much on her hair and other things, then rather than the technique. I think the technique and some of the stuff lacks in that way.
SPEAKER_00Next up we have Jake Monreal.
SPEAKER_02Okay, Dancing with Stars Jr. I love him. I was so excited to see another Dancing with the Stars Jr. kid on the show. I'm so happy about that. He's great.
SPEAKER_00He's certainly grown quite a bit.
SPEAKER_02Sasha's been very supportive of him.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. Next up we have Adele Zekman.
SPEAKER_02So she's she's a competitive, she's a blackpool Latin champion or semifinalist or whatever. So she's a really great dancer.
SPEAKER_00Does she primarily train in Latin? Or oh, so she doesn't know that much ballroom.
SPEAKER_02She she probably knows ballroom, but Latin's her she focuses on Latin.
SPEAKER_00Gotcha, gotcha, gotcha. All right. Next up we have AJ Pritchard.
SPEAKER_02So he's I'm pretty sure I've seen him on Strictly. So if you don't know, my family's from South Africa, and they get Strictly in South Africa, and I'm pretty sure I've seen him on that show once or twice. And then we love to watch Strictly videos online when they air. Um so why does he have to go through this?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm surprised because he would if he's uh he's I can't speak, if he's been on Strictly, he would have a lot of knowledge of not only dancing but also teaching.
SPEAKER_02Because you and I like to say Strictly is a whole other level of dancing with the stars. I mean, like, no shame to it, but the dancing, the quality feels so much superior to what we get on Dancing with the Stars a huge chunk of the time. And we feel like it's because they very much focus on technique rather than theatrics.
SPEAKER_00And content too. There's a lot more content in Strictly, it's very clear that it's a ballroom show.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So, and then like you know, they don't have jazz and contemporary, they do American Smooth or they do a show dance, so it very much seems very ballroom world. We digress.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, so I'm like, why why does and he did it for Shirley Ballas? Like Shirley, so I'm just I'm just like, why does he have to compete for this? Like, if you know, Ardum came from Strickly, Gleb came from Strictly. Was there someone else who came from Strictly?
SPEAKER_00Uh no, wait, there might have been one.
SPEAKER_02Anyway, they came, so why is he having to compete for it? Again, same thing with Jake. Riley, sorry, Riley got offered it because of her sister. Her sister called them and said, Riley's 18, you should ask her to be a pro. They've been this is an interviews, and that's how Riley got the offer, was because of that. Now, she's also a great dancer, but she it wasn't, she didn't have to, she just had to do a phone interview and she got the job. There was no audition process. So it's like, okay, why does Jake have to go through this? Right, right. You know, why did Haley and it's hard because it's each season they tried something new and you can't hold it to that standard. So that's why I'm a little salty about this because I'm like, some of these people, I'm like, why don't you just put them on the show? Like they just like look at them, like they have all this experience, but they have to audition. And and I don't know, it's I'm interested to hear some of the feedback because like I'm I'm no like champion ballroom dancer, like some of these guys are, but it'd be like you're this champion dancer, and then they're like critiquing you on something like ridiculous, and you're just like, okay. Because I'll say this a lot of these people have competed professionally into their adulthood. And I think some of them are around the same age as Mark and Derek, and some of them are a little younger. If I was some of these people, the only person I would care about opinion is Shirley. Right. Because like Mark and Derek stopped competing in youth. I wouldn't be surprised if some of these people had better technique and knew more than Mark and Derek.
SPEAKER_00Really?
SPEAKER_02I wouldn't be. And like, yes, they're still wonderful dancers, Mark and Derek, and they've made themselves very successful. And I am cheer, like, I am not judging them in any way, but some of these people have still they're still, I'm not saying Derek and Mark don't get a lot of lessons, but they're not getting as much training as some of these guys are.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You know?
SPEAKER_00That makes sense.
SPEAKER_02Maybe they're on the same level, maybe they're not above them, but they're on the same level, yet you're being judged. But they did sign up for the show.
SPEAKER_00True. So next up we have Selena Hamilton, commercial dancer.
SPEAKER_02So she went on tour with Derek Huff.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I didn't know that. Mm-hmm. Okay. Well, that makes sense actually why she got on here.
SPEAKER_02You know, like not trying to be a pain in the butt. Jake probably got an advantage of being on here because he was on juniors and they wanted to pull him. It's like, oh, why not get a strictly pro, even though I think honestly he should have just gotten a spot over like some other people, but whatever. Um, Stephanie was because of her brother and because she was in Troop and she's been posting all online of how badly she wants to be on Dancing with the Stars. Whatever. Briar. Social, you know, so it's you know, and then we have um, oh my gosh, who did you just say? Selena. Selena. Derek's connection.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that makes sense.
SPEAKER_02So it's like, but she she's a commercial dancer and she's like, I just started ballroom. And I'm like, she started it because of Derek's tour, no doubt.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I'm like, okay. So again, we're searching far and wide the ballroom world. And I'm not saying she's a bad dancer. I've seen some of her videos online. She's a wonderful dancer, but it's like I thought we were looking for a ballroom pro.
SPEAKER_00Right, right. Whatever. Yeah. Well, next up we have Nina Maester.
SPEAKER_02She's good. She's she focuses a lot on teaching. That's why I think she would be a wonderful pro, is because she can teach really well. Seen some of her videos. She seems like a great teacher. I'm excited, but she also looks like a fabulous dancer.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. And we have Eric Linder.
SPEAKER_02So he's a very big competitive dancer. I don't his social media is very unclear, but I know he's been competing and has some titles.
SPEAKER_00Cool, cool. Natalie Jolly.
SPEAKER_02I love her. So she's really young. She's like one of the youngest ones competing. I think she's 20. I love, she's a smooth and standard dancer. So if you don't know, you have rhythm, American Rhythm, which is um different technique than international Latin. So on the show, they do international Latin only. American rhythm is little bit different techniques. The biggest thing is that you can step on a bent leg, where international you have to always step on straight legs. So both of them have rumba, cha cha, and then you get a little different with after that. I digress. You have the same and standard or uh your ballroom ones, standard and smooth. So smooth, you can open up frame, extend, and they don't have quick steps. Standard, you have to stay in frame the whole time. I prefer smooth. Oh much more. She does both. She competes both. Um, she's been competing, they're multinational champions in the pro am under 21. They actually just started competing pro and they've already made the finals in one. Like they're her and her partner, I think it's her boyfriend too, but they're so good. And this show is filled with so many Latin pros that literally only really specialized in Latin. I so badly want a ballroom specialized pro. I so like, and I'm sure she has wonderful Latin dancing too, because they train in both, but they specialize in one. I would love for her to be on the show because I think she's exactly what you need. Because, like, you they do great in the ballroom dances, but I mean, you you can tell they're Latin pros. All right.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for sure. Well, next up we have Benji Castro.
SPEAKER_02So the Castro family, you have D'Angelo, who was a troop member a few years ago, and then his sister Ruby Castro. I think I don't know if I think they're cousins with Benji. Um, she was on So You Think You Can Dance, she's a competing, so I I have good hopes for Benji.
SPEAKER_00And last but not least, closing it out, we have Alan Genkin.
SPEAKER_02So he owns uh Fred Estare studio. He's been teaching a while, so I I have I'm excited for him because he has all that experience.
SPEAKER_00Definitely. So these are all of our competitors. The show is going to be judged each week by Shirley Ballast, who is the known as the Queen of Latin, one of the best dancers out there, along with her son, Mark Ballas, and then a guest judge every single week. This week we started off with none other than Derek Huff.
SPEAKER_02And he came in dancing.
SPEAKER_00Yep, and he he couldn't just walk in, you know, he had to put on a whole performance, but you know.
SPEAKER_02And why couldn't she compete to be on the show? Who?
SPEAKER_00The girl he Yeah, oh, who was that girl? She was really good.
SPEAKER_02I think I looked it up. She's some Australian dancer champion.
SPEAKER_00Let's get her on the show.
SPEAKER_02I don't know if she's on the Australian version of Dance with the Stars, though, the one Sharna judges.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02Why didn't we put Sharna as a judge on the show? I would love that.
SPEAKER_00I know. Do you know how many do you know how many weeks this this show is?
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_00No, I'm genuinely asking. I have no idea how long it's gonna be.
SPEAKER_02But if they're eliminating two people every week, now it won't be long.
SPEAKER_00Well, who's the host of this week since we're in Australia?
SPEAKER_02Robert. I firmly believe they filmed it just in Australia to get Robert to host, which kills me.
SPEAKER_00And you can just tell Robert is just so excited to be here.
SPEAKER_02I'm there.
SPEAKER_00So let's get to it. We introduced all of the pros, we introduced the judges and what they're gonna be doing over these next couple weeks. So the first week, they said that they are gonna primarily be focusing on technique, something that they should already know how to do. Anyways, let's hear what you have to say about that. You're already covering your eyes.
SPEAKER_02When we watched that, I was like, I'm I'm sorry. Like, we're we're trying to make sure they have good technique. I thought this was the gold standard of ballroom dancers in the world. And we're trying to make sure they can handle technique. Like, technique is hard. I I love and hate a good technique day. I love it because I need it. I hate it because it's a pain in the butt because it's so precise. I remember like doing it with Daryl, he'd be like, Technique day, I'm like, um, but like it's like they're good, but I'm just like, okay, I just I'm I okay. Is it because we want to see their technique against each other? But then how they're gonna do it is really stupid. But is it like because it's also it's like guys versus girls, but also you're all against each other. It's like it's weird guys versus guys, girls versus girls, but you're also it's the weirdest setup.
SPEAKER_00The thing about technique, too, not to interrupt you, is that technique is never something that you're gonna perfect. No, you're always gonna learn something new. You can clearly see on the show right now, all the pros, they dance a lot of the a lot of them dance the same way, but each one has a little bit of a different style. There are some who are stronger than others. And we're not gonna go down that road, but there are. But the bottom line is you never stop learning. We should be focusing on other stuff besides just the technique. It's very clear that they all know how to dance, but they should all already have this technique. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And I've seen clips because they posted it online, and I can tell you they all don't. And that like the basic technique of some of the dances, and that bothers me. Um, to know, and but like, and uh the thing, and I I hope they do it later, but it's not looking like they do. Part of being a pro is being able to teach someone most of the time who has no knowledge of dance or very, very little knowledge. Every once in a while, you get this amazing person who can just do anything, but someone who has no knowledge. I'm glad. I hope they know technique because they gotta teach it. I I hope they can do this stuff because they gotta teach it. I want to see them teach someone, not each other. Right, right. Because again, this is the gold standard in a ballroom. They should all know this, or most of it. You know, you always learn something new. But like, and also the other thing with me is dance is also very subjective. Like in my training sessions, I will ask, like, okay, what is this supposed to look like? And my coach will go, hmm, well, it depends. I'm like, I don't like that answer. And he's right, because it depends. Like this one person could say, I prefer you doing the step this way, and this other person could prefer it the other way. So it's gonna be literally what Shirley Ballast prefers.
SPEAKER_00Right, right.
SPEAKER_02And yeah, she's interesting.
SPEAKER_00Um We had a less of a Shirley Ballast. It's it's fine. We'll just we'll just move on.
SPEAKER_02I I want, I think she'll be good because she's gonna look at the tech, like the very basic, this is what's in the book, this is what's expected. But I'm just like, why this is the remember, I'm gonna quote this annoyingly enough, the gold standard. Why are we making sure we have technique? And the dances they picked, jive, because that's known as the man's dance, and then samba, because samba is so annoyingly technical. But like part of me is like, you know, why don't we do cha cha? You know, like cha cha is like also a very technical dance, and a lot of those elements are kind of repeated in other places. I don't know. I probably would have preferred everyone do a cha cha. Like, why are the guys doing jive and the girls are doing samba?
SPEAKER_00I I would have actually liked to see them dance with a girl, guy and girl, because that's what they're gonna do on the show most of the time, depending on I think I think for me, what would have made it better, and I said this before about past seasons of dancing with the stars. I think if we're gonna start off week one and we're gonna kind of keep everyone on the same page, how are you gonna critique a guy doing jive and a girl doing samba, known as one of the hardest dances in the ballroom world? Why not all 12 of I almost said six, all 12 of them do jive or all 12 of them do samba? So that way we can actually see like who stands out more than the other.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, six pairs, yeah. So like I almost wish they would have done that. Maybe like say everyone do cha-cha. And I get like it can get really boring after a while, but that's part of the challenge. Like, if you're first, you're gonna be good luck. It's like dancing with the stars. You set this tone, and if you're in the middle, you gotta make sure you stand out somehow, and at the end, you have to end off on a bang. So Like, I get what they're trying to do, but I'm also just like, all right, here we go.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So, anyways, uh, we they send them off to their very luxurious Love Island style house. And this is why I'm getting nervous, but anyways, I'm thinking myself, geez, like, can I be on the show if I get to stay in a house like that? But we go ahead and move on to the rehearsals where the guys start working on their jive. So Eric is paired up with Tristan, AJ's paired up with Jake, Benji is paired up with Alan. As for the girls, Natalie and Selena are paired up. Then we have Stephanie and Briar, and then Nina and Adele paired up together. So during the rehearsals, it does show that the girls are doing extensively better than the guys. We have an incident with Tristan when he forgets his routine in front of Derek, which was that was bad. But I can I can sort of play devil's advocate advocate on this because I've been there. We've we've forgotten routines plenty of times. I myself have been in professional showcases with students and have forgotten routines. And it's been so embarrassing. So I understand. I understand what this is like, but you know, I did like what Derek said. Like, this is a live show. You know, if it happens, you gotta you gotta learn to keep going. Yeah thing.
SPEAKER_02But I mean, like my thing, I remember us watching we when we watched it like a few seconds ago. Um, I literally looked at you and I was like, you literally have Derek Huff right in front of you, even if you can't remember, just do some basics and get feedback on the basics. Like, oh my gosh, especially no offense to Tristan, who really is probably the least experienced dancer they have there when it comes to ball. Because, like, yeah, hip-hop is dancing, but that is probably the most opposite you could get from ballroom in any context of the word, because ballroom is like, I would say ballet is a great one for ballroom in Latin, um, just because of the precise and technique, and then jazz is a great one because it's like you know, you have to move your body a little differently. I'd say hip-hop is the and I did hip hop, I also did ballet and musical theater and jazz. I did a lot, um, but like hip-hop is almost the opposite. Like Corbin Blue, bless his sweetheart, he was phenomenal, but he always got picked on for his hip-hop technique because they're like, Oh, you're bringing that hip-hop side in. So it's like, like, do the basics, pull what you can from him that's right in front of you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, I I'm with you, and I feel like if I don't know, I'm I'm at a loss of words, but let's go ahead and move on to Jake because we highlight on Jake a little bit too. He was basically saying how Jake wasn't really moving enough or something on that line, but I didn't really quite understand.
SPEAKER_02I think it was like the energy was a little low, and he was like, Jake was like, I'm not in jive shape, and I'm like, dude, you're the youngest one. Come on.
SPEAKER_00I know, or like, come on, Jake, you got that youthful spirit. Although I will say this, Jake is a very young kid, obviously. It's very sh his it shows a lot. And I feel like with dancing with the stars, and I like Jake a lot, but you really kind of have to have sort of a commanding presence when you're on the show, especially when you're around your student who has zero dance experience. And to me, sometimes I feel like Jake is almost too innocent. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02I think he'd be great on Troop.
SPEAKER_00Yes, I think Jake should start on Troop. I agree with you. Then we got Briar, who they highlight in the samba, and she mentions how she's got like millions of TikTok followers.
SPEAKER_02Millions social media followers on Instagram.
SPEAKER_00Now, granted, if this was a live show, that would help her out tremendously. Yeah. But this isn't a live show, this isn't gonna do anything for her.
SPEAKER_02So Yeah, I again like she and you can see her technique there, like in the samba, in the like in her solo rehearsals was really lacking. Samba's hard. It is, it's really hard. That bounce action, like I I've worked on it for a while, and I always I tell my coach I feel like I look like a seal sometimes when I do it, and he laughs and he helps me out. But samba action is really, really hard to get. The hip action is different, the bounce and how it comes, and the timing, and the different way you move your body. It's really, really hard to master. And you stick out like a sore thumb if you can't get it. Yeah, and she's sticking out like sore thumb right now.
SPEAKER_00Then they also highlighted Natalie, who says that she's not flexible. Yeah, that's one of her weaknesses. And I honestly join the club. I can relate. I'm I'm a ballroom dancer who's not flexible, so I I understand how she feels.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but I was gonna say she looked good. She's just like that's the thing. It's like she's a standard smooth dancer. So, you know, you're not gonna be as feisty as a Latin dancer, and so it's it's just really hard to say that because again, we have way too many Latin pros on the show. We need someone who can step in there and say, This is how you do us, this is how you do a foxtrot. Right, this is how you do it type of thing. And not a lot of those pros can do it. Like Artem, I would say, was like one of the male pros is like his ballroom felt smooth, his frame was there, like he was a commanding presence as he did it. Val is up there, but again, I don't feel like it's really there with a lot of the other other of them. Like Pasha and Danielle actually did 10 dance, so like they have some experience in it, but again, they're mostly Latin. So I really, really want Natalie on the show.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Do you think she'd be able to teach well too? Like she'd have a I think so.
SPEAKER_02I think she'd be fine at it. Cool.
SPEAKER_00Also, side note here AJ is cocky when he when he found out he was getting paired up with uh Jake and Well, because Jake called him old. He did call him old, but he was his response though, saying how you know, when I was his age, I was already winning this and winning that. I was like, all right, man. But anyways, let's not waste any more time. Let's go ahead and jump to the dances. We will be right back, everybody. Okay, so we just got done watching the first up, which was Eric and Tristan. And before we jump to that, we did have a little thing where Tristan was really kind of personally offended about Derek calling it underwhelming. Well, his technique was underwhelming, so there you go. But right out of the gate, I'm not gonna lie, I like Eric. He's got he's a really good dancer. I don't think I've ever seen him dance like that, or just in general before, but he was good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's great. Yeah. Why is he paired up with Tristan?
SPEAKER_00Maybe just to show. But apparently the judges seem to favor Tristan more from what I'm seeing, except for Shirley.
SPEAKER_02But Tristan had good technique, and this is what annoyed me. Mark is like, it was just a little too easy for me. I was like, he was so good, he made Jive look easy.
SPEAKER_00Okay, I'm gonna pause you right there just because I have a question. What exactly does it because I have never really been told that before, like it looks too easy. So I don't exactly know, and I've heard this on the show. What does that mean? And especially for viewers who don't really know dance.
SPEAKER_02So there's there could be a few different things. It could be that, like, oh, like talking to the pro, you can give her harder or him harder choreography, like maybe challenge yourself a little bit more with the choreography. Or it could be like if you're playing it too safe, it could be the aspect of like, you know, like so. If we reach, you know, you just extend your arm. Whereas like we tell our students, reach almost to the point you lose your balance and then you go, because then you're pushing yourself as far as you can go. You're not just placing your arm, you're extending. I'm sorry, I'm dancing as I sit here. You're extending as far as you can. I'd be such a Bruno. You're extending as far as you can, and really like out almost like making yourself fall over to the max and then going into the next thing. And that's that's where you get it. I mean, he had a lot of technique. Maybe he could have added a couple more, he did a lot of turns, but like he was doing a lot of different foot action, adding a lot of different things in there.
SPEAKER_00Um his posture was really good, especially according to Shirley. Right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And like the assignment is technique. Like, okay, like, and like they said, like so. I think what I would remember is Derek said he choreographed all the side-by-side sections and they choreographed their solos.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_02So the side-by-side sections, like he's like telling Shirley, Oh, they did a whole jive side-by-side section. It's like, yeah, but they're supposed to do jive in their solo. You choreograph for them. You're not gonna choreograph their dances for them when they're on the show being a pro. So um, no, it's not okay that he just did that and didn't do it himself.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Shirley said that Tristan gave about four beats of jive, and Derek kind of bit back saying there was plenty of jive, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. But like, like you said, in the side by side, but it's like she just got done saying in his solo, yeah, there was about four beats of jive, and she's not wrong. I even counted. There's I had to go back and watch it. There's literally like four beats of jive in there.
SPEAKER_02And the other thing is it wasn't even sorry, good jive. His foot was slightly turned in. It was. I think so.
SPEAKER_00I didn't catch that.
SPEAKER_02But if it wasn't, so here's the thing. So you'll see guys wear different things when they wear the show. The girls will wear different things. Certain things are gonna fight like normal clothes, flatter your body, help you out in the dance, whatever it is. So, because I'm sorry, Tristan is a little sloppier in his technique, him having tighter fitting, better pants that wrapped his ankle that weren't fly flowing everywhere, and a tighter fitting shirt like Eric's would have helped him look cleaner. And and he might not have had much of a say. I feel like he did, because as far as I know, the pros and the people get to be involved in some of the costuming, what they're comfortable with wearing. Sadie Robertson got to say she didn't want to wear certain clothes. So, like, I feel like they will have some to sort of say. But like, so that's hurting him as well. And that like there wasn't great foot action, it wasn't sharp. It was like I'm gonna kick kick and blah blah. He focused too much on being sharp in his hip-hop elements, but then he wasn't even really using the stage. Yeah, at least Eric, like Jive is a very condensed dance, but you want to command the stage and move, especially if it's just gonna be you and your partner. He stayed in one spot. Yeah. Like, sorry.
SPEAKER_00You good? Yeah, I'm fine. I can tell you're getting worked up, but that's okay. That's why we're doing this. So you can just get it all off your chest.
SPEAKER_02But yeah, like he seems like a wonderful human, but I'm just I'm I'm confused when we talk about the gold standard of ballroom dancing. I'm gonna they used it, not me. I'm gonna hold them to the side.
SPEAKER_00I'm really putting that in the description. We found the gold standard of ballroom dancing. Like, this is according to Monis.
SPEAKER_02You know, like like I said, like I've seen dancers in the dance world who would be on the show.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Like, why why aren't we doing that?
SPEAKER_00All right, so it does seem like overall both Derek and Mark favored Tristan over Eric, but Shirley seems to favor Eric.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and as they said, what's the line? Technique. And he didn't do it, and the technique wasn't great. Because like while while he was energetic in their side-by-side portion, his technique was not like Eric was outshining him with his sharpness, with his flair, with his posture, with his foot action. Everything Eric was doing was condensed, under, you know, over his toes, tight, there. Tristan was flailing around. I'm done.
SPEAKER_00Okay, moving on to the next couple. All right, we are back. We just finished watching AJ and Jake, and right out of the gate for this one, I already liked it better than Eric and Tristan's. Again, nothing against Eric, but this dance seemed to have a little bit more for me when Jake first started. Um, you can definitely see that he's nervous, number one. Yeah, poor kid. He's very smart. He's very nervous, but he's very good. Very, very good. His cakes are very sharp, he's got a lot of energy with that. But once AJ came out, I was like, oh man, I hope this isn't a dance off because it would be over immediately.
SPEAKER_02I wish they had paired Eric and AJ up. Like, I feel like because they look alike too, they're similar.
SPEAKER_00Their styles are similar.
SPEAKER_02I think they would have been good, but they they danced more like a unit, and I don't blame Eric on the last one for it. Um, these two danced more like a unit. You could tell they had rehearsed together. There was like one little slip-up, but like whatever. I wonder who made that mistake. Jake, because he started doing part of his solo at the end, so I think it might have been Jake.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_02But you know, it's okay. They both covered well. Yeah. Um, I mean, yeah, AJ's good.
SPEAKER_00AJ's really good. He's not just good, he's really good. He's super, super good.
SPEAKER_02Mark's comment, like, you've done this job before. Well, there's killers on our show. There's killers on Strictly 2 who are really good that he danced besides. So let's um sit down, Mark. You know, like Val is Val's.
SPEAKER_00I was gonna say, Val Val's an amazing dancer.
SPEAKER_02That's who we compared him to, but not compared him to, but said like if you're standing next to him.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But you also have sorry, Jan, I love you, but Jan is not he he's more of a contemporary dancer, yeah. Right? His his jive isn't isn't up there with Val's. AJ's is AJ's danced with Strictly pros who were phenomenal as well. So it's like, what I'm sorry, are you saying dancing with the stars has better pros than Strictly? Like, let's not go down that road.
SPEAKER_00That's true, that's true. But I mean, they could have also just been saying that, you know, they he didn't give, and I'm not saying I agree with it, but they're probably just saying that he didn't give what they should have seen, considering he has been on Strictly. Not necessarily downplaying the pros on Strictly, but just saying because you've been on Strictly, we expect more from you, kind of thing. Which again, I don't really agree with. They Derek in particular said that it lacked like oomph and the energy. And I was like, are we watching the same dance, man? I mean, you have better dance eyes than I do, but I I saw energy, I saw a lot of oomph with it, you know. But again, maybe that's just me. These guys are 10 times better than I could ever be, but they they're they were good. They were really, really good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I thought they were great.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I liked them a lot, but apparently we didn't go from zero to hero on this one, so we're just gonna we're just gonna mock the comments, that's all. Anyways, moving on, and we're back. We just finished watching Alan and Benji conclude the jive portion of this show. And uh, can I start for a second?
SPEAKER_01I guess.
SPEAKER_00Yes. First off, the music has been on point for these jives. Like this has been amazing, and better than Dancing with the Stars has ever done, like putting four counts for Waltz, but we're not gonna go down that road. But, anyways, let's talk about these guys. Absolutely incredible.
SPEAKER_01Best one.
SPEAKER_00I already want Alan to win. Alan is already my favorite. I know we're we might be quick to judge, but I love Alan. I also liked his story too, that he's there for his mom, that she passed when he was young and everything, but he just seems like a genuinely good guy, and his technique was amazing. Oh, yeah. But Benji, one thing that Benji has too, he's got that charm when he dances. I think Alan might have provided a better technique, but Benji really has the charisma and the charm.
SPEAKER_02Alan had a great performance.
SPEAKER_00That's true. He did.
SPEAKER_02I also love what they did is they made their costumes. I don't know how much of a say they had, but it coordinated really well on the dance floor. They complemented each other. You could tell this is something that makes me feel so much better. Their arms were going the same way, like they still had their own style, but it was a unit moving. It was our arms are going in the same place, and we're here. And boom, and boom. Like they matched each other's energy, they shined in their solos because that's like a really big thing. When you dance in a group, you have to match each other really well. You you can't be too unique. And they are gonna dance in group settings and they have to match their celebrity. They can't try and outdance their, they are going to outdance their celebrity, but they can't try to outdance them by showing off too much. They have to match their celebrity. And they did that really, really well together. And one thing I loved about Alan is his, I would say he had a disadvantage because his song slowed down at the end. You can't do jive in that. Yeah, but he had enough jive content in there that when he did that, he used the music towards the end, they weren't missing the technique jive. So, like there, there you go. You can still have your style at the end, but have enough jive in it.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. Yeah, no, I loved it. I kind of like what the judges said, I wanted to see more. And I I can't wait. Hopefully, we can see more. But anyways, let's go ahead and move on to the lovely ladies doing the samba, beginning with Natalie and Selena. All right, before we jump to the girls, I forgot to mention when they were saying that they were the best pairing so far, AJ's little oh. It's like, well, they were. It's like, gotta step it up, man. Anyways, we just watched Selena and Natalie with their samba. Okay, this is where I feel a little indifferent because I'll admit Selena is a performer. She definitely is a performer. She knows what she's doing. And I know the judges seem to favor her, but to me, the standout was Natalie. I I liked her.
SPEAKER_02But Natalie had Len would have loved her. Yeah. She had full content. Her solo was literally, you could go competed on a samba comp competition floor. Natalie had a not Natalie, Selena had a lot of tricks in it. Yeah. And they were great. But are you gonna do all that with a celebrity? Yeah. Right? Like Natalie, she demonstrated she knew figures, like she would be able to teach it. I thought she had great energy. And I really, really hope when they get to like they need to do a ballroom night and just do ballroom, that they judge a ballroom with the same tenacity they're being so stickler about in these Latin dances. Because I'll also say this Shirley's the queen of Latin.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Not the queen of ballroom. You know, like so, like, I'm a little worried, like when they get to ballroom, are they gonna have someone who knows? Like, Natalie could probably tell them things that are wrong with their standard and smooth. Like, that's how good she is at it. So, like, I'm just like, I think she did a wonderful job. Like, she had great performance. I was watching her, like, so with their skirts, for example, as a woman, right? When you're doing those samba hips, you want your skirt to have so much movement. I saw Natalie's skirt moving more. And now, yes, Selena had less of a skirt, but the fringe in front weren't moving enough for her hips. Natalie's skirt was like moving with it, like she was really pushing it. Like, yeah, they're both of them needed better hip action, especially in the bachacadas. Like, that is like pure hip action with how it goes. Like, it's it's all in your hip movement. And some of your samba boxes, again, it's all in the hip. Like, gosh, I had to coach drill me on that. Like, it was the whole lesson, and that was an hour long of every little action I wasn't doing right. But like, and that like that was a little bit missing for both of them for me. But I was watching Natalie, like the full time, like her face, I was drawn into her energy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, definitely. And the only thing I'm just gonna counter though is that you you mentioned about Selena was full of tricks. Selena did have some content in there. She did. And there, as you clearly see, there are a lot of pros who throw in random tricks in their uh routines with the stars on the show and everything. And sometimes I feel like, especially lately, that is what they are looking for.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Versus actual ballroom content, like what Len Bless His Heart would have wanted, yeah, and what we want more so. So technically, Selena just call it kind of falls right into that category, and I think that's where she has the advantage. But, you know, with the stuff that she did perform, I think she did do well. But again, I'm just gonna I'm I'm probably gonna favor Natalie on this one, but yeah, still good though. All right, let's move on. And we are back. We just finished watching Stephanie and Briar. Now, just by the look on your face, I can already tell you have things to say on this dance, so I'll go ahead and start really quick.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Overall, I thought the dance was well, I'm gonna let me start off by saying this. I hate the song. I have never ever liked the song. No matter what, I know Jordan and Lindsay danced to this song, and I I know it's a great samba song, never liked it. I have never ever liked that song. I don't believe I ever will like that song, but we'll move past that. The dance itself, to me, I oh I wasn't hooked really from either of them.
SPEAKER_02No, there was something missing, and maybe you can jump in on that, because I know you have a lot to say, but well, so like I mean, uh to echo the samba walks were not correct, it being technique night, and that was your technique.
SPEAKER_00Who are you referring to?
SPEAKER_02Briar.
SPEAKER_00Oh, Briar, okay.
SPEAKER_02Like, she's a wonderful dancer. She just wasn't I don't know why she was picked to be on the show. The gold standard of ballroom dancers out in the world. She's a wonderful dancer, not there yet at ballroom for a gold standard. I'm sorry. I'm not even saying I'm a gold standard, I'm just saying in general. Stephanie focuses way too much on her hair. She focuses there, there's like like even when she was on Troop, it was all about like throwing her hair around and she focused. Like, I get being on the show, you want to like dance well into the camera, but it's way too commercial of her. Like, you have to like you're gonna be dancing for a live audience, and that's there. You're gonna be dancing for your celebrity. Like it she didn't really come neither of them commanded the floor. Like one, technical-wise, was not there in a commanding way, and the other one performance, and it's I mean, she was much better, and having someone who's not technically as good as you next to you makes you look even better. But yeah, I just yeah.
SPEAKER_00No, to me, I feel like I mean, I don't really have much more to say to that. I can honestly just echo what you said, but it just didn't lock me in as some of these other dances have been. If I were to see them on the show, honestly, I hate to even say this, I'd probably forget they were there, you know. But so yeah, that's kind of where I stand with that. But let's go and move on. We are concluding with our final two, which is gonna be Adele and Nina. Okay, everybody, we are back with the last couple of the night, which was Adele and Nina. Now, they did say that they knew each other prior to this because of the competition world, and there was some, I guess, tension there to say the least, but certainly didn't show it because this was by far the best performance for the girls.
SPEAKER_02Oh, hands down. The only thing that annoyed me is that like their arms weren't together. It's like they didn't dance as a unit, they very much danced individuals, which like I get, but like going forward, they need to work on dancing with someone else next to them that may not be their dance partner. But like, for sure, I think Nina is my favorite because like Adele is great, but like they said, she's very Very like hard and it's very much like boom. Where I really like Nina, like they said, she has warmth, she has the technique, but she also has a lot of teaching experience. And I think like she would be a really good pro on the show.
SPEAKER_00Because it Nina who used to know Alan? They were roommates, right? Yeah, that's yeah, that's right. I think that's pretty cool. But no, I agree with you. I think I like Nina a little better. Adele was amazing. Oh, yeah. She was fabulous. I was, I thought she was great, but I something stood out to me with Nina. I I definitely agree with you there. But I think for me, what what got that was Derek's comment calling Adele a Rolls Royce. Yeah. That was that was really cool. It's saying that she dances expensive. I like that term. Yeah, that I like that term too. Very high quality, very how do I word this? Sheik, if you want to put it that way. Yeah. But no, they were they were both fabulous. And I'm sad to see some two people go home tonight, you know, already. But let's go ahead and do it. Okay, so we just lost Briar and Jake for the first round. How do you feel about that?
SPEAKER_02Briar, 100% agreed. It should have been Tristan.
SPEAKER_00I agree. And how do you feel about them being in jeopardy? Do you do you like that we have a bottom two kind of like how we do in Dancing with the Stars?
SPEAKER_02Well, there's no voting. It's just the judges. So I don't know if it's like, okay, there's no scoring either. You're, you know, you better prove yourself next week because you were in jeopardy this week, so you better step it up. And if you're in jeopardy again, you're going home.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But like it doesn't make any sense. Is it just to get light a little fire? Probably just to add more tension than anything. I think they should just we'll say who's who's eliminated.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. I don't know how I feel about them not like getting scored either. They're just gonna say, like, okay, yeah, you're going to be able to get away from the home.
SPEAKER_02I want to know that judging. Like, I want to know, like, I know they're judging on technique, but okay, why was it Jake over Tristan when Tristan did not choreograph well, he did not have great technique in his jive, and Jake had jive, lots of jive content. There was just a you know, he was just nervous, essentially. I'm gonna rack it up to he was nervous. He looked down and he was a little ahead because he was nervous. Um, Briar made sense why she went home, but you know, like why why was it why do they keep Tristan? It didn't make sense to me.
SPEAKER_00Didn't make any sense. Now, there's been a lot of feedback from audience saying that they wish there was a live studio audience, and I don't know if they were referring to the fact that there just should be a live audience or if the audience should be able to get involved and actually vote.
SPEAKER_02I like I said, I wish it like if they could do the final two, I think I would like that, or maybe like the top four, and you get to vote from the top four. Like, for example, Briar's fans would keep her in. That's just but she wouldn't, and sorry, she's not the she doesn't deserve it after this. After this, like she didn't, she shouldn't have been not even counting her little slip that she had. No, I'm sorry, I'm not even thinking about her slip, I'm just thinking about her technique because we all slept, like that wouldn't have the issue. I didn't have an issue with that. Yeah. Um, I've fallen so many times in a dance with that. So like that wasn't, it's just the technique was not there at all.
SPEAKER_00Again, though, it's it's hard to start these girls off at a dance like Samba. Yeah. I don't know if that was just like, all right, we're gonna, you know, we're gonna throw you right into the fire, let's see what you got, kind of thing. But you know, they've already released the dances for next week, and I can already tell you, I am so, so happy Natalie gets a Viennese waltz. Yes. Because now this is her area of expertise.
SPEAKER_02So Brandon is mentoring, and the challenge is storytelling. They have to tell a story with their dancing.
SPEAKER_00Are we gonna get to a teaching round at all? We will see. That's the big question.
SPEAKER_02Bring in former contestants that still love the show and make them teach them how to dance, and then part of their judging is the feedback they give the judges.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, okay, well, as we begin to wrap this up, I do want to ask you this. So now, when we when we started this episode, you were basically saying how the first thing shouldn't be technique because they should already know how to do it, so on and so forth. If you were searching for the next pro, like what would you do each week as far as like their test to get them to a pro?
SPEAKER_02Well, I like the idea. I think we saw it in a trailer that they're going to do it, is doing like an opening number, literally making them learn what it would be like to do it. Like, because sometimes the pros have multiple performances. So, like an opening number, and then give them all a solo within the opening number, like with like put them off into pairs. You know, the opening number is usually a couple minutes long, so do it, and then okay, you got to choreograph your section, but then here's the big section, and then we go off it. But every week they should be learning to teach someone something. They should get a challenge like they do on Dancing with the Stars, do a theme week for heaven's sakes, and then they're they're teaching it or not doing a pro number or a group number, they're doing a pro number with someone else, and they're because that's what they do, they have to learn to choreograph with each other and include that in the like a theme. Like there, it needs to be there, they have to learn to teach every week. We have to see how this new human, whatever whoever they are, past celebrity, you know, someone else is taking the teaching they're given, or they should be teaching it to Derek, and Derek's like, yeah, no, that doesn't make any sense. Something like that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I'm with you. I feel like this show could wrap up very quickly if they just kind of do what you said, or they'll keep it going longer. I have no idea. Well, my final question for you is just based off of this first week, and already we know two people that have gone home, who are your final four, like your ideal final four?
SPEAKER_02Two girls, two guys?
SPEAKER_00Any, you know, we can only have one winner, so it could be three guys, one girl, it could be four guys, it could be four girls.
SPEAKER_02So Alan and Nina are definitely up there. I really like Alec. And if AJ can say Alec. Eric. And if AJ can tame himself, I'll put him up there. But if AJ's still gonna be arrogant, I'll take him off. Yeah. Um, and I'll probably put Adele. Like she's she's gotta open up a little bit more. Adele or Natalie is interjectable.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, because I really do want a ballroom girl on the show. Really, a ballroom girl, ballroom boy, really badly.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, definitely. Definitely, definitely. Yeah, from I think for me it would be Alan, Eric, AJ, Nina. I would say. But again, I agree with you. If AJ continues his arrogance, then I'll switch him with Adele.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But anyways, everybody, we are gonna go ahead and wrap it up there for today. I hope you guys enjoyed listening to us rant about ballroom dancing once again. But we do this all in love. You know, we just like talking about it. We're just getting things off of our chest, but we need we mean no disrespect to any of these people. They all seem wonderful, and we really admire everybody who just gets out there and dances, honestly. That's the important thing, is that you get out there, you dance, you have fun, you enjoy it. And if you've never tried it before, I say get out and try it. You really would not regret it. I promise you that. With all that being said, though, you guys, thank you again for listening in. We will be back later this week, actually, since we're releasing this episode a little late, but we'll be back later this week with episode two. Until then, everybody, we will see you on the dance floor.
