All right, everyone. Welcome back to another episode of Real Talk with D. This has been our recap for Dancing with the Stars The Next Pro. I'm joined once again by my lovely wife.

And we're gonna go ahead and move on to episode two. So today we have our guest judge, Mr. Brandon Armstrong.

Yes. Can you give some people a little bit of backstory on that?

The Armstrong joke?

Yeah.

So um he fractured or broke his elbow during tour. And so like the joke was like, oh, his arm really isn't strong because it couldn't be strong. And so it was like arm getting stronger, strong arm, like it was just a joke. So and he did a lift in the his opening number. And I was like, Daryl, he's Armstrong.

I'm actually just happy that he also got an opening number because I know we were kind of joking, like, why couldn't Derek just walk out? But it's kind of nice that all the pros that are probably going to get a nice little uh pro number opening number for themselves, which is cool. But again, like they dance with these partners who are just like kind of no names, but they're amazing. Like I want to know who these people are and why they're not on the show or anything like that. So, but anyways, so today's theme is about storytelling. So, how do you feel about this particular challenge?

I mean, I think it's very accurate. It's like telling a story. I think it's interesting. You have to convince the other one to tell the other story or your own story. Like, that's an interesting.

And you only get one. So, like, if you and I dance, only one of us would be able to tell our story.

Well, and Eric, I mean, we'll kind of jump to this. Eric made a good point with his as he was talking about he was like, Well, I I love him. He was like, Well, you know, as a pro, I'm gonna have to learn to tell every and someone else's story. So I'm I'm gonna do it here. And I'm like, ooh, small.

Exactly, exactly. You're putting others before you, which is what you need to do. Yeah. So the partnerships we have are Eric and Natalie, Benji and Nina, Tristan and Stephanie, AJ and Selena, and then Alan and Adele. So let's go ahead and start off with I guess who we're looking at right now, which is Stephanie and Tristan. And they decided to roll with Stephanie's story, but at the same time, Tristan kind of They had the same story. Yeah, Tristan kind of said this was his story too.

So Yeah. So it's it's just basically feeling like you don't fit in in the community you're in.

Which, you know, it's it's a it's a I don't want to say a common story, but at the same time it kind of is too, you know. But like we all have those moments where, you know, we didn't fit in from time to time.

Theirs was more based around race.

Yeah, for sure, for sure. But anyways, so now here's my next question. Do they get to actually pick the dance and song? Or is it assigned to them?

They said like pick the dance and song that best fits.

Okay, okay, because yeah, we'll we'll get to AJ, but he's doing another jive, and I I thought that was kind of interesting. I was like, you don't want to switch it up a little bit, but we only get one ballroom tonight, and I was very disappointed because I want to see these guys do ballroom. Yeah. So yeah, I just anyways, so Nina and Benji decide to do Natalie. Um what am I saying? Not Natalie, godness. Nina's story, which is about perseverance, she said. However, Benji's idea was to do a little bit more of a happier style.

Yeah, just sell celebrating his country. So Nina's story was just like it sounds like a bunch of the hard things she's done had to deal with in her life, which is fine, but you need to pick one. So pick like coming back on the floor for the first time after 10 years. That's a great one. Pick, you know, paying homage to my father and finding out that he passed away. But it's like, I want to do this. And then I had a bad boyfriend. Like, you know, it's like it was like we. So it's just like, I think the perseverance one could have been a good story, you know, gaining the confidence to get back out there again. But she was also trying to tell a story with all these other things. I also think, like, we only had one upbeat song with AJ. I think it would have been great to have another upbeat one and have them do like a really authentic salsa or I know she did samba last week, but a samba or something like Latin like that where they can really show off some fun aspects.

Yeah, I agree with that. I think that it would have been cool to see a a salsa from both of them, but I'm just gonna jump back to this. I I want to see more ballroom. Yeah, I really do. Even if they wanted to take that and turn it into like a friendly foxtrot or something, but I mean, it wouldn't have to do with the Miami or anything else.

Oh, Miami would have had to be in a salsa, sorry.

Yeah, I know, I know, I know. That's yeah. Anyways, moving on, we have Alan and Adele. So Adele wants to celebrate her life partner while Alan wants to pay homage to his mother who passed away when he was only 15, which I can't even begin to imagine. That's just yeah. So they end up rolling with Alan.

Definitely. And then that leads us into Natalie and Eric. You want to take this one?

SPEAKER_01 5:07

Yeah, so Natalie's basically she moved from Hong Kong as a young child. She was didn't have any friends or community, and she found her community within dance. And like we said, Eric was very smart and was like, oh, let's go with Natalie's story, let's tell her story that's gonna make me look like a good pro and the potential I have. Um, but they're doing a ballroom. I'm so excited. They're doing a V and E's waltz.

And then last but not least, we have AJ and Selena.

Yeah, so they're gonna do his winning the British World Championship. Um, and he gets to teach Selena how to dance drive.

I feel like we're gonna have a lot to say about that, but we'll uh we'll ease our way into this. Now, I am noticing just after you know watching this, they are really focusing a lot on the house life, which is what we were worried about from the get-go. Yeah, like I want to see more dancing, they're gonna show us maybe 10 minutes of dancing and 40 minutes of house life.

Yeah, I'm like, I don't need to see them having like conversations over drinks and fighting at the house and everything like that.

Anyways, let's move on. We have our rehearsals taking off, and overall, everybody seems to be sort of connecting, trying to get each get a rhythm for everyone's stories, except for Nina and Benji. They cannot seem to communicate with each other. How do you feel about that?

SPEAKER_01 6:28

Yeah, so Nina, from what I see from her from social media, she's a coach, she runs a studio, she runs a training business, so she's used to being like, you go here, you do this, you do that, you know. And essentially, most of the time, that's what she's gonna do with the celebrity. But you do have to learn to work with other pros, but Benji's also not speaking up. He's not saying this is something that bothers me, I want to do this, I want to do that. Um, so it's it's a power struggle. So it's, I mean, it's kind of hard. Nina needs to let go um and actually listen to him. And he needs to speak up a little bit more because he's getting frustrated.

You can definitely tell he's getting frustrated. Do you have someone? I'm not really trying to divide sides here, but do you have someone that you kind of feel is more in the right between the two of them?

SPEAKER_01 7:13

Benji needs to speak up, but I feel for Benji.

Yeah, absolutely. But I don't want to waste any more time on this because I know you're just dying to talk about Selena and AJ here.

SPEAKER_01 7:23

I mean, like, she's a phenomenal performer, but like the fact that he's having to teach her how to do drive is a little sad to me. Like, he's like literally spending his time teaching her how to do drive, teaching her techniques, like talking about the kickball change and where to keep it underneath your feet and how to do it. And I'm like, why why is he why is he teaching her this? What like why why is he spending his time in there teaching her? I mean, like, yeah, he's gonna do that with a celebrity, but this is supposed to be another potential pro. So we expect her to go in and teach someone how to do drive.

Yeah, I uh like I I realize that she is a good performer, and like I'm just trying to, I'm really just trying to think back to all the other pros that we've had on the show before. You know, we had Alison Holker, we have currently Jan, I forgot his last name. Ravnik. Ravnik, thank you. But people who are not specialized in ballroom dancing, but they're still on the show, or Allison was on the show, but and you know, they made some magic. Allison has one of the best Disney dances that she did with Riker. But so I guess like in the at the end of the day, I mean, I guess you don't need to be superior in ballroom. I don't know. I because I'm eating my own words here because I this it I want exactly what you want. I want someone who knows ballroom and Latin on there, but it's not necessarily what the show has given us. You know what I mean?

Yeah. But you can still tell the difference. Like, well, Alison, I think if I'm sorry, I'm gonna annoy a lot of people, but I feel like if Riker had had a Cheryl Burke, uh Sharna Burgess, uh Whitney Carson, someone who was more well-versed in it, I feel like he would have done a little bit better. Like he he got second, but like those technical aspects the judges often talked about with him, I feel like it wouldn't have been as prevalent. You know, like they she broke into a lot of hip-hop stuff in their dances.

Um, I don't really remember those.

SPEAKER_01 9:21

Oh, I because I watched all his dances because I really liked him. So, like, because I wanted him to win over rumor, but I didn't necessarily love the the coaching he was getting.

Yeah. No, I I understand that. And obviously I know Jen and Jan didn't do the greatest last year, but I mean they got what, halfway, give or take?

SPEAKER_01 9:42

They got about halfway.

Yeah.

Yeah, but like you could tell the technique was lacking in some areas for her. She also just didn't have great attitude, but that was that. I'm not a Jen fan.

SPEAKER_00 9:52

I know you're not. I know you're not. But I do like Brandon coming in and you know, giving some feedback and coaching and everything. I do think that he is more focused on the actual storytelling versus the technical aspects, which is probably why these people are gonna get away with half of that stuff.

SPEAKER_01 10:08

But that's the week. The week is storytelling, it's not technique. Last week was technique, but so apparently like you know, it's like, okay, but personal opinion. So each week, I guess we're gonna focus on something different. Cool, fun, exciting, but shouldn't it build up? So we've talked about technique, so you should already have that. So now we're talking about storytelling, so you should have that, and then whatever you do next week is the next thing you build on to. Like, are are we are we just gonna forget about that?

No, again, you're a hundred percent correct. And I just want to know when are we gonna start the teaching part?

SPEAKER_01 10:45

You know, I feel like that should have been week one, man.

I feel like that's never gonna happen. You know, just based off of the role that the show is going in right now. I just I I don't know.

Oh, yeah. Some people are like, you need to give it a chance, you need to chill out. Like, it's gonna be part of it. That's all part of being a pro.

Um, but I'm just like, but like teaching's literally all they do.

Yeah.

They they do a little bit of their own dances here and there, but teaching is what they do. So like that's gotta be something very important. So I I want to see someone who's never danced actually learn technique from these people. Or stick Robert in the room and see what he learns from them.

Well, speaking of sticking Robert somewhere, Robert decided to take it upon himself to go and have a heart-tarte with Alan, which I thought was really nice. They can both connect that they've lost somebody that they love dearly and everything, and you know, to bring out the emotion. And I really think Alan needed to hear that. I thought that was really nice. Yeah. I like that a lot. And I think that's gonna help him out with his dance. So let's go ahead and not waste any more time on the drama aspect, though. Let's get to our dances. All right, so let's go ahead and start with our first couple. We are gonna start with Eric and Natalie dancing a Viennese waltz. We'll be right back. All right, we are back with Eric and Natalie dancing the Viennese waltz. I'll go ahead and start really quick just because I know you'll probably have a lot to say as always. But first and foremost, I think Eric and I have the same ballroom jacket. But second off, the song was beautiful. Third, that dance was amazing. And I want to see more ballroom. So if you guys aren't aware, Viennese Waltz is actually Monis and I's absolute favorite dance to watch, to dance, you need to teach, you name it. It's just something that holds very dearly to us. We got engaged while dancing a Vienne's waltz, so it's a very, very special dance. But I thought they executed everything perfectly. The storyline, the technique, I loved it.

Oh, I absolutely loved it. I think it was great seeing Natalie Shine and her specialty. Like I said, we need more ballroom pros, pros who mainly do ballroom. I thought Eric did a great job being a good partner. I I loved it. I thought it was great.

And I always love a good DNA's waltz. It was nice that you know, we really got to see what we always tell people how the gentleman is the frame and the lady is the picture. Because that's exactly what was portrayed here.

You know, Natalie really was shined as the portrait, but it didn't take away from Eric either. No. You know, so he he did his job, and yeah, they're both very good together. I like them. Yeah, all right. Let's go ahead and move on. All right. Well, we are back from watching Benji and Nina, and that was rough. Why don't you get start this one?

Why did we do a backflip and a rumbo?

We didn't need a backflip. We did not need a backflip.

Yeah, you could definitely tell she was leading the dance.

Yeah, it was, it was, and I like both of them, so it's really hard for me to say no.

Yeah, they Brandon said it perfectly, honestly, that they were a little disjointed and there was really no connection. I like that they both had emotion in their in their face that was really nice, but that's pretty much all that they had to offer. And I hate to say that because, like you said, I I enjoy ha having them both here. They both nailed it last week. Yeah. So this was this was kind of sad. I felt really bad for them.

Yeah, it it wasn't great.

Yeah. But I I do want to ask though, when it comes to you, when you do showcases with people, do you feel like you're able to tell a story, or do you think you just dance with your students just out of curiosity?

SPEAKER_01 14:25

Well, I'm trying to think of like showcases I've done. So, like, like the most recent one I did with a student, I mean, we just danced to a song. Like, there wasn't a story he was asking to portray in the dance. And I feel like, you know, when I've danced with like other like Nereus or Paul, it's mostly been like with Paul. We had a friend like me. Um, not friend like me.

I want to be like you, not friendly like. I was like, no, we didn't do friend like me. We did I want to be like you, and I mean we just kind of like told the story in the jungle of us like goofing off, and Paul did great choreography for that, which was really, really fun. Um, but like when I dance with them, like they choreograph and I do what they do. Um, I feel like I've told a story in some other things, and I feel like I did okay, but you know, I'm I don't know.

I don't think every dance needs a story. No. This is definitely for the be it would be like a most memorable year. Dedication night or dedication night, yes, I'm sorry. But you know, if they're looking at a week one dance, it's just a dance. Yeah, you know, so but yeah, yeah, who might have judged, anyways. Moving on, we got Tristan and Stephanie next. And we're back with Stephanie and Tristan's rumba. Let's uh let's have you started.

I didn't see the story, I saw a rumba.

Like a competition rumba?

SPEAKER_01 15:43

Not a competition rumba, a show dance rumba. That was not a competition rumba. Um it bothers me that they have to tell him to like fix like because there's like very things in there, like the telespins or the telemarks that they're doing. She's off. She was like her weight was back, and he like it wasn't a proper technical telemark. And so it's like to me, it's like that is like one of the basic figures you see in so many Rumbas. We should know how to do that very basically, you know. She goes, he goes, she goes. Like, and we're we're we're on our balance. The woman is up on top, like you know, there there is an aspect of the man bringing you around, but like you're on your own balance, and it either was a mistake or they choreographed it to look like that, and it didn't come across well. So it's like I I'm just frustrated that like Tristan, he was a great partner, he was focused on her, he was looking at her. But my thing is it should carry. Technique should carry. It's like, okay, we already had that week, so we need to make sure we have the technique this week while we also storytell. It should build, right? Because we're building what makes the best, what makes a dancing with stars pro. So we've already we should have had it before we walked on the show, but we have the technique here. Now we're adding the storytelling. So uh why we're excusing not having technique, I don't know.

I guess to me, this is gonna sound really, really harsh. To me, Tristan looks like a bronze dancer doing gold material. And you know, he is a good dancer. I did I did appreciate the connection that he had with Stephanie. Looked like they had really great connection, and you said it, the judges said it that he couldn't take her eyes off of her, which is you know top-notch. That's one thing that actually I struggle with a lot of times when I dance Rumba. Um, but overall, I uh some something was still missing for me from this. But we're talking about Tristan. How'd you feel about Stephanie?

SPEAKER_01 17:40

I'm just her style doesn't like I said, her she was off in her tells me. I don't connect with her style of dancing much.

Yeah, that's fair. Same here though. Something again, something is still missing from this dance. But either way, let's go ahead and move on. We got our only happy dance for the night, which is the jive done by AJ and Selena.

Okay, Shirley's comment was not fair as being like, you need to give me some creativity. Repeating stuff's not gonna watch. Okay, I want you people to go look at some of Derek Cuff's dances. I like him, I get it. You gotta repeat stuff. He repeats. There's a couple moves that he does in Jive and Vinnie's Walt specifically, and Chacha, I believe, that he repeats with his partners consistently. My dog just kicked me, sorry. Anna um repeats with his partners consistently. I get it. If it's a move and it works and it's easy to lead, do it. But do not say that to him when it happens. Like he he was repeating jive steps, and it's it's not like he just did something else. He was doing jive steps, and he was also this week have the challenge of teaching his partner how to do jive. I like I like AJ. I know last week he seemed like a little arrogant, but this week he seemed good. He was like excited to dance with Selena, and he was doing a prose job and teaching his partner how to dance the jive. Selena's a phenomenal performer. She, like they said, like she was great, she captured your attention, but she didn't have the technique.

Yeah, it really seems like the judges favor her more than AJ, which was really interesting to me.

You cannot Shirley does not want him on the show. Like, Shirley, I don't know what happened on Strictly. I'm gonna go do an internet deep dive after this, but I don't think Shirley likes AJ.

You really don't think so? I don't think so. Man, I wonder. I'm curious how AJ was on Strictly. Like, was he hard? Was he? I don't know.

He had four seasons on the show.

He made the finale three out of the four times, recently.

Good for him. What's he doing on here then? What? Seriously. I know we've talked about this already, but no, overall the dance was fine. I mean, you know me and Jive. I would watch Jive every single week, you know. If not be in East Waltz, then Jive is my second favorite dance. But yeah, I I feel a little conflicted with this one because it was a good dance. I also don't like the song anymore. Like this the song just kind of drives me up the wall. I've heard it way too many times, and I need an I we need a new Jive song. But anyways, as far as the dance goes, it was a very good dance.

But yeah, I also didn't like Brandon's, like, only so many people can relate to it. Well, it's not just about winning this thing, it's about achieving something you've worked hard for.

And he achieved it at a young age, too.

Yeah, so a lot of people can be like, I achieved something, I worked really hard for it. I was like, what are we just trying to pick on AJ?

Like, you know, they did mention though that because he has done this before, you know, it's a little bit of a tricky challenge for him. They said kind of said that last week, but it is true, you know, be it's like getting someone who knows how to dance on Dancing with the Stars. You'll notice that they come down harder on that person, except for Charlie D'EMilio. But Jojo Siwa. Or Jojo Siwa. But overall, if you have dance experience, you have seen firsthand how the judges do go harder on them. And I'm kind of feeling it's the same way with AJ.

I can. I don't I wouldn't say they always go harder on the ones with dance experience. Um, the only one they did, I would say, was Hilaria, and that's because she beat Emma Slater in a dance competition at one point in her life. Um, but yeah, I just I I don't think they like AJ.

Yeah, I mean, yeah. Anyways, I just it just seems like the fact that they said that Selena ate AJ for lunch, essentially.

Like I wouldn't agree with that. He was a good partner and he let his lady shine.

Exactly. So yeah, I didn't I did not agree with the judge's comments on that, but anyways, moving on. Well, that's a that was a good dance.

That was beautiful. I think these two are proving why they'd be such great pros, like for me specifically, Alan.

It's very, very rare that a dance makes me cry, and that that happened. That was amazing. I I don't have any critiques for it. I literally don't.

It was beautiful, it was very well done.

Very well done, technically done, a beautiful story. I liked how when he lifted up in the air it was meant to be like an angel.

That was really pretty too and made everyone tear up, including Shirley. It actually made Shirley tremble a little bit, which was unheard of, but Yeah, the only thing I would have ended differently. You would have?

Like her behind him, because she's like, you know, he's gonna see her again, but it's not right now, where they ended like with their heads touching. Yeah. I would have had her almost behind him or something.

I can get on board with that. Yeah, I agree. I agree. I agree.

Maybe maybe they meant to, and it was just they got caught up in the moment, and they just like that's just where they needed to end it. You know, totally understand that. But I I would have preferred a maybe a little different ending pose, but that's just me being really, really picky because it was really, really good.

I really liked what Mark said too when he's like, Adele, I'd be happy to dance with you, and Alan I'd be happy to dance next to you. That's that's a comment and a half for sure. But hands down the best dance of the night, in my opinion.

Yep, I'm still pulling for him. He's my number one. But let's get down to the part we hate the most, which was sending somebody home. Our current bottom two are Nina and Benji.

So yeah, the bottom two is just the couple. It's not even like two people that didn't stand out, it's just the couple, um, which is hard. And you went, these are two of you are my favorites. I know. So this is so sad. I don't like this.

I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. And we just lost Benji. That's so hard. I liked him. I really liked him a lot. But uh, yeah, I feel conflicted because I don't I didn't want either of them to go. I really didn't.

And like Nina, you can see it on her face. She feels like it's her fault.

Yeah. Do you think they would have had a better chance if they rolled with Benji's story?

SPEAKER_01 23:54

I do. Um, well, I guess I hope they would have been able to communicate. I think like Nina was just so focused on telling her story she couldn't think it. And I think if they just like wanted to celebrate Miami, like I feel like they would have been able to come up with a more fun, upbeat piece. So I think it would have helped them more. But then if that's the case, AJ would have been home. Yeah. Based on this.
