Dad's Halloween

Daniel Aguilar
Daniel:

Hello everybody and welcome to another episode of 14 Death six podcast. I am Daniel Lar, and here with me is Jonathan Lar. John, what's going on, man?

Jon:

Not much. Not much. Had a pretty busy weekend. Um, I went to, so we got a dog. I don't know if I told you. Did they tell you? No,

Daniel:

it's the first I'm

Jon:

hearing about it. Yeah. Sheep Dog. We, the kids and I, this weekend we went to, well we were outside putting the decorations up for Halloween. We decorated the inside weeks ago, but,, we were decorating the outside and, one of our deck, one of our ups, you know, kick the bucket. So we had a, we went to Home Depot got a new one and they had like a six foot sheep dog that has like, uh, bat wings and yeah, so we got, we got that little sucker. We got put'em up in our yard. The kids named them, named them. Apple Yeah, so Preya name, honestly, that's one. So that's one of the things I love doing with the kids when, especially when they're young, like around three and five. If they get like a new toy that's like a lizard or whatever, I like to ask'em like, oh, like what's his name? And they come up with the best names. I always love that. But, uh, but yeah, so we got a new blow sheet dog, um, which is awesome, and, uh, had a lot of fun doing that. How was your weekend?

Daniel:

you mean my day? Sure. How about your weekend? can't get into, I can't share a lot of what happened today., I will save it for, next week's episode, but,, this morning went to,, Danny's Jogathon. So first of all, I'd like to say thank you to everybody who donated. Pretty soon I will be posting the total amount. She doesn't know how much, just yet. We haven't told her, but, yeah, it's She, she did a good job this year. Raising, raising money. So, but thank you to everybody. She had a great time. She ran her little heart out and yeah, it was awesome. I got to be there and cheer her on and it was great. I posted some, for those who didn't see, I did post some pictures on our Instagram page, so go ahead,, check that out when you get a chance. So for a segment, John, how was your weekend?

Jon:

So it, uh, progressively got better. Okay. The kids are less sick now, so it was, that means I'm getting sleep through the night, so that's a lot better. Um, and, uh, like I said, we, uh, decorated the outside, played some. Um, we didn't go this weekend, but I think, or this past weekend, I think we're gonna go this weekend. There's, um, a couple streets over in note in our city, Whittier, that I guess they, the houses, they really go all out decorating. So we're gonna go drive through there. There's like a little route that you can take. Um,

Daniel:

where at in woodier,

Jon:

remember my apartment, the, when I first moved out over there, the Redwood Center. Right. So it's over there in that area. It's, uh, I think it's right off of First Street. Um,

Daniel:

Is it on the side, you, on the, is it on the side that you used to live on or is it on the other side of linear?

Jon:

No, it's on the side that I used to live on. Okay. A little further into that, those neighborhoods. But, um, so yeah, so I always enjoy doing that. I know, uh, going around Christmas time and seeing the houses is normally a big thing to do. Um, there's some houses that the neighborhoods, they, they get all into it and they go all out. So we will probably be doing that this weekend, which I'll give you a, you guys an update on how that goes. But, um, yeah, around the past weekend it was, it was pretty good. What about you?

Daniel:

Yeah, absolutely. Keep us posted, on Saturday, got rained out for tennis, believe it or not, it rained here in California. And so,

Jon:

quick question, have you ever tried playing in the rain? I mean,

Daniel:

yeah, but it's not really fun cause the ball won't bounce. I mean,

Jon:

so the pedals just don't let, don't even play. Yeah,

Daniel:

exactly. Oh, okay. That makes sense. So call it an audible and went to get haircut after sports clips. Get the b treatment of course. Which is not bad because a v, the MVP treatment, it's just, it's just as much as a. Regular haircut at a barber shop. So since I went to the pediatric job, I don't work near a sports clerk, so I've given a few barber shops,, a shot and we're talking like 30 something dollars for them to cut my hair. Wow. Where I can go to sports clips and get the shampoo and the hot towel on my face and massage the little massager on my back. So, and it's probably just, Well, with Tip it's probably about the same, so, Yeah. Yeah. So, and then, came home, spent time with, the kids and we, saw the Dodge name and. My daughter's been bugging me to take her around to,, look at some some Christmas, some Halloween decorations. So, Oh, there you go. I might, I might let me know where that place is at. I would love to show her for sure. Actually now that I think of it, my friend lives in La Habra and she told me her block goes all out. She's like the only house on the block that doesn't do anything. So I like check, check that out. Sunday we watched football we're, I know Sherry doesn't like it, but we're a football family, so we watched football on Sunday, although, Sherry and Danny did have to go to church cuz Danny, for now making the, doing her cat kids classes. And so they had a report to churches Sunday. So she took,, I was gonna go, but then we thought about it and Alex in church might be a little too much so. We, um, so I stood back, I'm into ultimate sacrifice.

Jon:

Um, what's the team player right there? Drew the,

Daniel:

the short stick and stood back and so saw my bills get revenge, you know, against the chiefs. That was, great game. But the best part came after the game went to Ralph's to make a copy of a key at their little key triage they have there. Mm-hmm. And so I'm waiting for the key to come out. And this guy with the cowboy jersey, he's walking, I see him coming towards me and right when he approaches me, he's like, Bills mafia. That was a great game. And he gave me the little fist bump and I was like, Yeah, that's how we do it. That's how we row. Sounds like a class. He died. Yeah. And then. Not too long after his wife, I'm assuming his wife, walked towards me and she's like, Oh my God, that's a great game. Bills are unbelievable. So yeah, I feel like I'm in, I feel like I'm part of, uh, Bill's. Mo

Jon:

You feel like you picked the right team. Exactly. Bond. So bandwagon there. So

Daniel:

Bill's for life. There you go. Yeah. And then, Sunday just came home and, uh, meal prep and got everything ready for the week. So yeah, it was, like I said, relaxing,, Sunday. Now, these next two weekends are a different story, so, um, we have,, not a lot on our plate, but we do have events that we will be attending and, should be a busy weekend for, for both of us. I. Yeah. All right. So before we move on to what's trending, I would just like to say, happy birthday Moses. My best friend since, fifth grade, the story of how we met was John, myself and my sister had to transfer school the middle school year, and so we went to, Rivera Middle School. And, you know, it's a rough day. No, not a rough day, but it's, it's a strange day on that first day. And I remember, uh, on the way home, walking back with myself, John, and Melissa, and right when we were turning on our street, I heard Daniel. Daniel and I turned around and it was a kid from my class, and he's like, You won't play basketball. And then I was like, Hell yeah, I wanna play basketball. And so, uh, that was Moses. And that was, I wanna say 19 95, 19 94, 19 95. That's when I met Mo. And so, uh, Mo yeah, so, and our families have been close, uh, since then. And yeah, it was just, uh, he's a great guy. I mean, you can't ask for a better friend. So Moses, Happy birthday.

Jon:

Happy birthday, bro.

Daniel:

You know, he called me today. Did he? Yeah. He called me in the right when I, right when I picked up, I said hello, and he's like, Happy birthday. And I was like, I'm. Uh, I'd say he's my birthday. He's like, Oh, I thought we had the same birthday. not a happy birthday. Moses which led into an office like a good 10, 50 minute office conversation. So there you go. Yeah. So, um, I don't know his, I don't hear that Instagram, so, but I was gonna say send him birthday wishes, but, um, yeah, so thoughts are going out too. Exactly. All right. So John, um, what's trending these days? What's trending?

Jon:

So, I'm not sure if he saw, this one's not necessarily on a happiness, actually know what, We'll sit down for the next one. Um, I'm gonna do a follow up on my last week's trending today, and I don't know if it was for Moses' birthday or not, but today is the days when you can go ahead and get those, uh, McDonald's Happy Meal,

Daniel:

Buckets. Now, is it just for today?

Jon:

No, I think they're gonna be doing it for a while. I don't think it's just today. It starts today. Gotcha. So, yeah, it's crazy. I've been hearing stories that, uh, people have been calling different McDonald's and just asking like, Oh, what buckets you have apparently, I guess the, like one McDonald's like location has like just one color.

Daniel:

Yeah. I figured that's what happened. Yeah. There's a reason why they brought this back and it wasn't for the holiday spirit. It was, yeah, yeah. For the chaing. Yeah. I would've be surprised if, uh, by this weekend you hear like, Oh, this place is sold out. Or there's like a

Jon:

shortage of, Well, I saw a story that's in that, some lady posted that, I guess, uh, she talked to one of the locations. They were like, Oh, on Friday we'll get a new shipment. And so I guess they're gonna be restocking pretty frequently. So,

Daniel:

Yeah, it's sad. Yeah. Have you ever been like that with anything? No.

Jon:

You know what, it was funny, and this is actually McDonald's as well, but um, they recently, just like a month ago or so, they had like the adult Happy meals. Mm-hmm. where I guess it was like a throwback to like the older ones. And I remember we tried to get, we went to one or two locations just because we were going for lunch. It wasn't like, oh, we get, went out of our way just to go there to get it. But um, we tried to order it and they were out of it. They were out of stock and we're like, Okay, so we just got, you know, regular mail or whatever. But, um, never been too crazy about just like, Oh, we gotta go collect these. Like I know throughout the years McDonald's had several collector collectors, uh, items like the glasses and bugs and stuff like that. But, um, never, never really been crazy in trying to go out and get them. What about you?

Daniel:

So I want to say about like, Maybe like five, six years ago, give or take. I woke up early on a November morning and I'm like, Oh, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go surprise Sherry and go get her a, a coffee from, Starbucks. Starbucks around the corner from where we live. There you go. And I'll get, get me hot chocolate. Maybe I'll get Danny, a hot chocolate too. And so I get there and I order our drinks and I get to the window and the girl gives me four Christmas cups. I'm like three Christmas cups. Cause I ordered three drinks and I'm like mm-hmm. Oh, I'm sorry I didn't order these. Cause I thought this is something like, you buy separate. She's like, Right, No, no, no. Today's the day we come out with our coffee, with our Christmas red cups. And so yeah. Since you ordered you, since you ordered, um, The drinks that are appropriate, you get to, you know, keep these, these are yours. Oh, cool. So like, that just made it a challenge every year to go get our Christmas cups. And so, because they are reusable, they're plastic. So, uh, that's what we do. That's, I will, we'll find out the day of when they're, when they come out and we'll go get them. And then for that season we'll use, those for our hot chocolate and coffee and, and so yeah. Nice. Yeah.

Jon:

Got a little

Daniel:

tradition out of it. Yeah. Yeah. And so, Okay. Mine are, lot to choose from, but, so McKenzie Scott, you know who that is?

Jon:

McKenzie Scott? I don't, but I feel like I'm about to.

Daniel:

She married, Jeff Basils and then they got divorced and the divorce alone made her like one of the richest women in

Jon:

the world. Gotcha. Okay.

Daniel:

So Cota, just donated$84.5 million to the Girl Scout, foundation. So not a girl. Nice. So I gotta ask you, do you have a favorite Girl Scout cookie?

Jon:

Of course I do. What is it? Why wouldn't I do? Why would, why wouldn't I? Um, so my advocate, so I know they have like weird names, so I don't know what the name is. Mm-hmm. but, uh, the caramel, coconut chocolate one. Okay.

Daniel:

I think those Samoas or something like that. Or

Jon:

Samoa, You might be right. Yeah. Yeah. But yeah, those are my favorite. I love caramel. I love coconut. Okay. Throw chocolate in the mix.

Daniel:

Not a coconut fan. So that's like a deal breaker for me. Then MITs then MITs the Tagalongs. Yeah. Put'em in the freezer. Forget about it. Yeah.

Jon:

Which ones?

Daniel:

The Tagalongs? Tagalongs are the ones with like, uh, they're chocolate on the outside and then on the inside it's like a cookie with peanut butter.

Jon:

Oh, okay. Yeah, those

Daniel:

are good. Yeah. And then, like I said, thin mins. Thin MITs,

Jon:

Okay. Well, yeah, everyone,

Daniel:

you gotta love thin mint. Yeah, that's a, that's a deal, right? So hopefully with this large donation cookies, prices will come down a little bit, so I hope so. Yeah. All right. And so, do you have another one?

Jon:

Uh, I do. So this one's, uh, kind of not on the positive note, but, um, so did you hear about. Um, James Cordon. Yeah, I have this on my list. Yeah, he got 86 by, uh, a little cafe barista, Um, Baltazar, I believe is called in New York City, apparently. And which this is really disheartening cuz he's already seemed like such a cool guy, such, such a friendly guy. But apparently he was really nasty to the, uh, like the waiters and waitresses there. Um, I guess whenever he is, he's had a conflict there to the managers. He's cordial, he's fine. But I guess the staff, the waiting staff, he was really nasty too. Um, so they, uh, so they 86 them, which, you know, knows pretty much Yeah. Blocking him out.

Daniel:

Yeah. There was one where, story I heard that,, he was, he ate his meal and the waiter just kept going back to make sure everything's okay. But then all of a sudden he found a hair and told. Told the wait, the waitress that she was supposed to bring him cuz they found the hair, bring a round of free drinks for everybody. And he wanted the drinks that they have been drinking all night to be comped and was very rude about it. And it's kind of like disappointing a little bit because that's been like, his, his image basically. Like nice guy. Right. Nice funny guy. Yeah. Sweet. And I guess it doesn't matter because, you know, he's giving up the, the late late show. So, um, a little disappointing how, although he does have some really funny segments and, uh, between all three of'em, Fallon Kimel and, and him, I, I actually do like,, courted the most. They've been a big felon. It's, Yeah, same here. I think he's a little bit overrated to be honest. Yeah. Yeah, yeah., okay, so my next one, you took that one away from me. Boom. Stole. It looks like the Dizzy Magic demo making Steve debut pretty soon at Disneyland. So this is like a, a van you buy and it kind of looks like a watch, but you're basically gonna be able to do everything on this, this van, you're gonna be able to, if you have like a room at the one of the Disney hotels, you'll be able to open and, and lock your room. From this, you'll be able to make purses off this band here. Everything you need, you'll be able to do just off this,, little band. So, um, And they've been testing in Disney Road. It's been successful. So, there's a rumor that this is going to take over. Um, and you know, this will be like the standard down the road, but yeah, that's going on in Disney, Disneyland these

Jon:

days. I did not hear about that. That's pretty

Daniel:

interesting. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it doesn't make any sense to me because like you have, we all have, like I was gonna say, we all have, but majority of people have smart watches and you could do that off my, I could do most of that stuff off my, um, my watch right now. That

Jon:

makes sense. So they just Disney, Disney bite it.

Daniel:

Yeah. Okay.

Jon:

Uh, do you have another one? I do. So this week that we're in right now, it's uh, that Tech Appreciation Week. So if you guys are, have any, you know, furry family members that you're taking to the veterinarian, feel free to take a little extra gift for the vet techs. Give, have some appreciation to them. They do not have an easy job and they, uh, I feel like they do not get compensated enough for their job. But, um, yeah. So it's definitely yes, you know, something great to do.

Daniel:

You gotta tip your waitress and leaders, right? that is not a bad

Jon:

technique. same idea.

Daniel:

so I don't know if you saw this, The Guardians and the Yankees played tonight in a game five winter take off. winner goes to the next round of the playoffs. So Loser goes home. And they were supposed to play this game yesterday, but it got rained out. So, so basically what happened was the. the guardians go to the De Stadium and it starts raining and so they're waiting around. Eventually they get tell, they get told that the game is gonna be postponed until today, so they go back to the hotel. Unfortunately, all the rooms were booked for the next day, so they had to call on Audible and find another hotel asap. So I know that was an

Jon:

interesting story. Yeah, yeah. Cuz I mean, I'm sure the players, they just assume like, Hey, we don't have to worry about a place to stay. And then boom,

Daniel:

like, ah, well, plus too, like you figure, like if you would've want to accommodate a major league baseball team because they're gonna be coming back to play the like X amount of times next season and the year after that, year after that. you know, you're gonna want their business.

Jon:

So not only that, but even just the players, if they go to that town for whatever reason with their family, like, Oh, hey, we stayed here. I'd really like to, let's go back here. So, yeah. Yeah. That's interesting.

Daniel:

So John, do you like football?

Jon:

Um, do I like football? Uh, I'm gonna go with, yes.

Daniel:

Okay. So do you like Thanksgiving? I'll say, Yeah. I'll go towards, yeah. So as you may know, football is played off Thanksgiving, right? So you look forward to, well, starting next year you'll have football not on Thursday, but also on Friday. Sure. Amazon, Amazon Prime has agreed to, uh, pick up a black Fri or on a Black Friday night game. So it's, uh, So they're gonna be streaming a game on Friday night, starting next year on that, on that Black Friday.

Jon:

I, I'm not sure how I feel about that. Why? I don't know. I just feel like around the holidays you're already busy enough and then catching the football games and on Friday, that's kinda like your down time before going to more football on the weekend and

Daniel:

Yeah, it's always been college day. It's always been college day. True. You know, so like a lot of college footballs played on that day, so, um, Yeah. That's interesting. But you know, more footballs more football and we're all gonna watch cuz you, we don't want, we all have fomo Right. If you are missing out. So I'll be watching. So yeah, so got that to look forward to next year and then, MBA is back. MBA started their season today, um, watching the Lakers get killed by the Golden State Warriors right now. 1 23 to 1 0 4. Um, have you ever been in a basketball game?

Jon:

One time many years ago it was a Clippers game.

Daniel:

Oh, that's right. All of us went. You remember? Yeah. At the sports arena. Correct. I love telling that story. Uh, I don't know if you remember, uh, dad, but the tickets off the scalper that night, we didn't get the tickets at the right ticket. Yeah, right. Yeah. This guy off the street asked if he wanted to buy tickets and so my dad said Sure. And he bought four tickets cuz it was, We also had our sister with us. Mm-hmm. Dad and I are just looking at each other and I'm like, Need this will work. And he's like, We'll see. And uh, we go give our ticket to get in. It works. We got in the building. And so like the tickets were like, I don't remember how much, but they were really cheap. The guy practically gave it to us. Right. And, and he had a stack of tickets. It sounded like he had like a couple extra tickets. He had like a whole stack. What was, So, if that makes sense. Exactly. So we go up and we were like up in the rafters and none of the numbers are even close to what our ticket says. And I'm like, Oh my God, this is, this is not good. And so dad sends me to go to the usher, right? And mm-hmm. He said, Go see if, uh, I go tell him, you know, Go see where our, our seats are at. And so I go to the, the usher and it's like, Excuse me, sir. Can't find our seats. This is what our ticket says. And he's like, Son, you're in the wrong place. He's like, Your seats are not up here. They're down there, And we were like right behind the basket. I dunno if you saw that. You remember that? Yeah. Yeah. So that's the, Yeah, that was a crazy story. So, um, it's a story I like telling because it's, it's pretty cool.

Jon:

I wonder if the guy gave us those thingss by mistake or if he knew what he was doing and I don't know,

Daniel:

set us up for a good night. I don't know. I mean, like I said, he had a stack, so I think at that point it's like, Hey, let's just get rid of, we need to get rid of these tickets because game time's like in about like an hour and Right. I don't want to be stuck with all these tickets. And so, Yeah. Yeah. So, Yeah, it was a fun night. I was a was,

Jon:

I was. So that's on the basketball I've been to. Have you been to another one besides that? There's

Daniel:

a couple here and there, but, uh, the one that stands out to most, to most is our, my friend Todd gave us his company seats for the night, and this is when the Clippers were good playing at Staples Center. And we were two rows right behind the clipper bench or on the floor. Oh, wow. Yeah. So you hear everything, you see everything. And that was fun. That was a fun, It was pretty cool because, uh, what I did was I came up from work. I recorded the game cuz I'm like, I knew where the seats were at and so I might be on TV baby. You might be on tv. And we were on TV. Every possession that was in front of us. You saw Sherry and I on TV the whole night and Nice. I think Sherry got a text, um, during the game. Someone recognized her. They're like, Are you at the Clipper game? I see you on TV and so you were

Jon:

supposed to hang out tonight. you said you were sick, you said?

Daniel:

Uh, yeah, that was, that's fun. Um, alright, I think that's it for me as far as like what's, Do you have anything else for like, news wise?

Jon:

No, nothing I'm too happy about. But the ducks are nothing good in the East coast. Uh, three games, three losses. So they. Yeah. Then that you

Daniel:

on East Coast, so I was giving this a lot of thought and I wanted to run this by you and I was thinking of adding, uh, a little segment on this show. What do you think about having a little like, update on the ducks? Just like a minute, quick minute. Recapping the ducks, what they did that week And I was actually thinking since I'm looking for an NHL, NHL team to roof for like, to use my services, thinking about coming on board and being a duck fan,

Jon:

something we can do gets, You can't, just the ducks we, we, you don't just become a duck. When I was like, Hey, I'm gonna be a. Yeah. It's gotta be in you. You gotta

Daniel:

want, It's pretty simple. You gotta want it. I saw them on TV this week. No one's there. need all the help. How? In New York? Yeah, they were in New York. Okay. So all the help you can get,

Jon:

that would explain why there's no Dutch fan there. They were on the East coast. Um, yeah. I mean that's, I have no problem with that. And I watch'em anyways. I keep up with them, so. All

right.

Daniel:

So you hear to hear first. This is officially a Duck's podcast and let's go. He did not, uh, Ducks at all.

Jon:

Let's go Ducks. This is the first time he's bringing it up. So you did hear here first,

Daniel:

Uh, Groff is gonna have an awesome season. You heard it? Nope. Mvp,

Jon:

He, he retired last season. Okay. So

Daniel:

I. Okay. Korea. Boom. Let's go. Just

Jon:

maybe Hall of Famers now, or what's

Daniel:

happening? Tmo salami. I'll get her. I'll

Jon:

get her. Great. Our boy salami. He's gonna do it baby. Easier, right? Okay.

Daniel:

She's not birthday. Other boy in the band. Okay. Corey Perry So much

Jon:

rage. Isn't

Daniel:

nice you right now. All right, so get my duck cat. I'll be fine. All right.

Jon:

That's alumni. That's, that's good.

Daniel:

So I already started, see I pass the

Jon:

test, you know, some history. So that, that's a good note. Do

Daniel:

you want to be a duck fan? Yes. Second question. Why? And so, um, alright, so real quick, back in on this dated history, um, In 1987, the Down Jones dropped a whopping 23%. That was the most, it's dropped in a single day. I believe they called that. Uh, what was it like Black Monday? Um, that's when the right before, uh, it crashed. So, um, that's how it goes. Right? Stock market, up and down, up. I think it was 2008. When is the last time it crashed?

Jon:

I believe you're right. Just ride the way.

Daniel:

Um, did you ever see that movie? Um, oh, so Steve Corral and, um, uh, The Big Small Yes or no. Big Short. Yeah.

Jon:

Big Short. Yeah. That's a great

Daniel:

movie. Great movie. Yeah. Uh, if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. Um, cuz you do learn a lot about how the game is played, right.

Jon:

How the games played and how, cuz it's pretty much is based around when the house market crashed. So how a lot of banks were signing people up to buy houses is they weren't even really caring if they could afford the house or not. They were just saying, Hey, yeah, we could get you this loan and it set you up. And they pretty much kind of like just fudge the numbers as far as like how they could qualify and all these people bought houses and then when they couldn't afford it, all these, uh, mortgages were, um, were just collapsing. And that was the, the collapse of, of the hallmark of the housing market. And um, yeah. And there it's really interesting because you see a couple different sides of the story and you see these people that are kind of warning everyone, Hey, this is not a good idea. This is going, you know, lead to something bad. And then you have, um, it kind of goes off these two guys that are. pretty much betting that the house market is gonna kind of crash and it obviously does eventually, and they're happy, and then it's kind of shown in their face like, Dude, you just made a bunch of money off of people's misery. So it's, it's, yeah, it's, it's a great movie and you learn a lot, so it's, it's wonderful.

Daniel:

Yeah. Uh, 1988, uh, Roseanne debuted on abc. It was a very, uh, controversial show back then, and when it returned, it was still controversial. I did not see the reboot. Did you? I did not heard about it, but I did not watch it. Yeah. I know she made some comments regarding Trump, um, when she was pro-Trump. I'm not sure exactly what she said. It was kind of a deal breaker and she got kicked off the show and, which is kind of crazy cuz the show was surrounded by her, but, Right. Um, it was actually, I was of the original, uh, you

Jon:

know, I actually, What would you have found the show, the original version?

Daniel:

Uh, you know what? I always thought it was underrated. Uh, I was never a fan. I didn't really follow it. I don't think I ever saw every episode, but the episodes I did see, thought it was funny, thought it was entertaining and I liked it. Right. So. Yeah. Yeah. Um, okay, so 1961 West Side Story, the movie came out, this was based off the Broadway show and it won 10 Academy Awards. I think I know the answer to this. Have you ever seen West Side Story? Yes, I have. Have you? Really? Yeah.

Jon:

I seen it. And even in my eighth grade chorus, we did some songs to it. We sang. What, what did you do? Uh, we sang, um, It's so bad at the part that I remember, but I just remember, uh uh, something about, um, Go to America. Oh yeah, Go to America. I know about you. You get some,

Daniel:

Yeah. So then when you're jet, When you a jet, Yeah. It's actually, I gotta say it's entertaining. I didn't think I was gonna like it, but it was, it's very entertaining. So I did like it. And last 1, 19 31 Algo was convicted. Um, he was actually sentenced to 11 years in prison, uh, tax invasion. So, uh, do you know he was part of the mob and it was, uh, wa he was. Yeah. Yeah. You got me. And celebrity birthday. So I usually just pick one. Um, famous person's birthday. I had to go with two on for this one. So the first one, probably one of my favorite actors. John Grove was born in 1945. Do you have a favorite, John? This Gro movie? Uh,

Jon:

not off the top of my head. Not one that sticks out. What about you?

Daniel:

Her Anderson's, Uh, that's a classic. That's a good one. Yeah, as a kid. Harry, That one. Harry. Harry. And Henderson's. And then if you're talking TV show, it's a tie between Third Rock from the Sun, which was funny. I did love that one, love that show. But he also played a serial killer in season four of Dexter, and it was, that's why I still need to watch. It was really good. He, I mean, yeah, it was the whole season. Tim and Dex are going back and forth and yeah. Awesome. Awesome. But, and then I could not leave this guy out because his work is true to my heart, and I know you like his work. Uh, but born in 1969, Mr. Trey Parker, 69. Yeah.

Jon:

Trey Parker. Nice. Nice. Okay.

Daniel:

What do you like from Trey Parker? Of course. South Park. There you go. Good. Yeah. Uh, yeah, I, I think that like South Park is probably, It's gotta be underrated for their music. Cause they've write some really good songs. Yeah, they have.

Jon:

Yeah. That's, that's, that show has been so creative in so many ways. And so like, up to date with the topics when they're happening, right?

Daniel:

Yeah. Okay. So yeah, so that's background this date, background this date. All right, So tonight we're gonna talk about how it was growing up, um, for us when we celebrated Halloween. And, and maybe talk about like, a little bit of the difference between how it was back then and how it was now, I guess. Um, so first thing, first, John, what was the, uh, what's your, what do you think about when your, uh, childhood and Halloween.

Jon:

What do I think about? I think about, I mean, I think whatever kid thinks about candy mm-hmm. getting a dress up and just trying to collect as much candy as he can. Um,

Daniel:

Do you ever double dip? Go back for a second. Double dip second. Yeah,

Jon:

I'm sure I did, but nothing that I recall. Not purposely like, Okay, let's go back down this know street and hit these, these houses up again. Was was that your move? Was that, was that of course what you

Daniel:

did? Of course. Oh no. I think it was kind of like at the end of the night and like it was just like calling, try to stop this again one more time, see what happens. And, and, but it was always like one for it and it was always like one or two. It wasn't like, Yeah, my bag on holds so much. Right. So. Right, right.

Jon:

I did feel like at the, towards the back end of the night, if your bag was. I don't know why, but I felt like you weren't gonna get as much candy. Like if they were like giving, like, you know, grab your handfuls for all the kids, then for you, they would just get like one or two. They're like, Oh, you already have enough candy.

Daniel:

I still remember the first house, like walking up and then like the bowl was there on the porch and the No, please take one. And I was like, Are you freaking kidding me? Like, how does this bowl still hear? Um, of course I'm a roof aller until I follow the rules. I only took one. But yeah, it was, uh, that's, uh, I do remember one year mom, uh, she for gold, um, Trick or Treat Inc. And she took us to like a, uh, one of her friends, like calling parties. The only good thing about that there was a lot of candy, so. We say we were still able to get quite a bit of candy, but I think that one was a little disappointing because I was still, I think I want to see, I was, I was sixth grade, so like, it was still like something I wanted to do still. Let's see, Treat. So

Jon:

do you remember where we were that, that Halloween? Is that when I was a No, no.

Daniel:

I wanna say my first, the first costume I remember was Spiderman. I remember mom and dad taking you to the mall. Uh, they got the Spiderman costume. I don't know how long before, like, I don't, Not sure they went to, was it the day before or a week before. But remember going there and dressing up a Spiderman for, but then I don't know what she was thinking. Um, and kindergarten dressed me up as a pumpkin. But the thing about it was, um, and god bless mom too, uh, she, it wasn't took her like all night to like blow up the balloons, but she stuck the costume with balloons. And so you imagine like a five year old trying to play, try to run and you're, you got the balloons in my, um, my costume. So That's awesome.

Jon:

Uh, one of the first Holland costumes I remember having was a teenage ninja turtle. And I remember being the red one, Rough. That's when I wanted to be. And uh, I remember it wasn't like a standard like costume as far as like wearing a mask and stuff. It was like, there was a headband that went around my head. And then for the clothes, it was actually more like, kinda like the, like a kind like the karate rope. And it had like ninja turtles on. And I, I, I remember being a little kid and when I put that thing on, I felt so powerful. I felt like I could do karate, which obviously I didn't, but I just remember like, just mentally transforming into, into a teenage me Ninja Turtle

Daniel:

D was, What was the purple one? Don Tell, is that right?

Jon:

D tell yeah.

Daniel:

Yeah. And it was, um, it was actually, I thought it was pretty cool actually. Uh, it was, uh, sweats and a sweater. Yeah. Yeah. And it was just already like, I don't know. I was like, Oh, this is so comfortable. So yeah, I remember that one. But, uh, yeah, I think it was about like maybe seventh, eighth grade where I stopped. Trick or treaty

Jon:

you stopped trick or treating. Yeah, that sounds about right. Yeah. When did you stop dressing up? Or like you took a break from it if you still dressed up now

Daniel:

it's off and on now as an adult. Uh, I didn't go dressed up in high school. Not that I can think of. Um, there were a few parties went dressed up, but it was kind of like Frankenstein was one year. Um, but yeah, just, uh, I wanted to go with one this year, but we're just so busy and everything and you know, babysitting's really hard to come by and so, but yeah, I told Sherry I wouldn't like to go to a costume party. That'd be kind of cool. you can't find it. Yeah.

Jon:

Um, do you have like a top three or maybe just say you have one favorite costume that you remember throughout your time growing up when you got that costume, you just, you was psyched. You were thrilled, You felt, Oh, this is awesome. And you

Daniel:

were excited. Not really, but it was fun going, uh, a couple years ago in 2020 where I was Scully and, uh, Alex was, um, Mike Kowski from Monsters Inc. Oh yeah, I remember actually. Yeah, that was, Yeah. So that was, uh, yeah, that was, that was Skull. That was fun.

Jon:

Yeah. It's funny actually in my phone, you know, I'm sure it does it for your phone as well. It'll bring up memories of pictures that you've taken and whatnot. And, uh, I think like a week or so, it shows like Octobers in the past and it had a picture of you and your family. Well, you're dressed up as Scully. Yeah.

Daniel:

I don't remember, I don't know if I'll dress up this year though, but it's, uh, It's me. See? Yeah. I don't know. I, I mean, I work at a, at a pediatric center, so maybe I should, but you definitely should think now. It's like kind of too late kids, so we'll see. It's never too late. Let's see. So what do you, do you guys take your kids trick or

Jon:

shooting? We do, yeah. Okay. We do around the neighborhood in our house. Um, and yeah, they, they've had a blast the last couple years going out.

Daniel:

Um, you guys take'em around, Where do you live? Yeah, just

Jon:

around the neighborhood here. Uh, there's several houses that participate that have that give up candy, so they get a ton, which they eat like 2% of it. I eat probably about 25% of it, and then the rest just go to waste. We hold onto it and then it's just, It's like a year

Daniel:

that it's, I think there's like a website or something that has like links to like, if you want to donate your candy. So like basically one is like you could donate it to, it basically goes to like the troops. Yeah, they'll like, they'll send the candy. Cause yeah, we're kind the same way. So like, basically we take Danny, Well I think it's getting, she's at that age now where it's like she's starting to figure out like, okay, well we do two blocks a year now if we do three, that's more candy. And if we do four it's even more.

Jon:

She's like, Guys, I've been running the numbers and we have wire block radius.

Daniel:

Pretty much. Yeah. She's like mapped it out and it's, Yeah. So cuz we've gone and went with just like two blocks. It's a block that we live on and the block behind us. Okay. And that's pretty much it, but however, We always have a ton of leftover. And so we kind of like suffer back with that and then we, we hide it and usually the next day she's like, Oh, can I pick a candy? She's like, Sure. The next day same thing. But then after that third, fourth date she forgets. And then it's just usually, um, Sherry and I will eat some and we'll just, you know, store it. So otherwise, Cause I do remember just rating, um, there was like no rules. And so like once mom checked the candy, it's open season. Oh yeah,

Jon:

yeah. Oh yeah. We, we went at it, at, at our bags, just about it. Um, I think last year actually what was left over, I ended up taking to my office and I have several people working in the office. Yeah, that bag lasted like probably two weeks and then they went.

Daniel:

Oh yeah. Especially if you get the chocolates, if you get the chocolate. No, I, I Those

Jon:

before I turn

Daniel:

out there, let me, uh, check real quick. Um, let's see. I posted the JA draft, um, today and um,

Jon:

I, that was a late post. Well, I'm trying

Daniel:

to decide cause I know we didn't do it last week and I was just like, Should I do it today? Should I do it tomorrow? And I just kept going, pushing it back and, cause I wasn't sure. And so I'm like, I better, we're gonna do one tonight so I might as well post

Jon:

this. Um, I know some of our listeners are super excited to hear that we're gonna have a dad draft tonight. Oh, just, yeah, just on this episode. Yeah, cuz Okay. They really look forward to the dad draft

Daniel:

right now. You are losing surprisingly. Uh, let's see. 69% to 31%.

Jon:

I don't think I'm the only one that is suspicious that you just threw the, the dadd drop out there hours before the,

Daniel:

this is the most folks, this is the, this is the most votes we've had. Is

Jon:

it really? Yeah. And how many of those people did you notify? Nobody. I'm nobody. So,

Daniel:

allegedly. Yeah. So do you have any safety tips to, like

Jon:

safety tips? Um, I mean, taking flashlight when you go out, trick or treating, I know that seems kind of dumb and not a big deal, but, um, some of the streets that this light might be out or something, it just helps cars driving by, see where you are and it just helps, it helps you keep safe. Mm-hmm. Um, so yeah, flashlights, uh, if you go in a group, go in a group that's always, you know, a great fun time. Um, and obviously you always want to check the candy before laying the kids go at it. Absolutely. Um, so I mean, yeah, I mean, I, I think majority of it's pretty, pretty common knowledge as far as nothing is. There's, there's no secret hidden tips. What about you? Can you think of any, any good tips that we haven't mentioned?

Daniel:

Well, um, I would say take a picture of your kids before you go out, just so you have a, a recent picture just in case something happens. Um, you know, you might get separated, you know, anything,

Jon:

whatever. You're gonna take that to a happy place. Like, Oh, before they get all sweaty and running around stuff and, Oh,

Daniel:

well, I mean that too, you'll have like a nice picture, but in case something happens, you have like, here's a recent. Photo of what they look like in their costume. Um, I mean that's pretty much it to be honest. Um, you know, we tried to like only focus on houses that are lit up. It's hard. Yeah. Um, but other than that, yeah. I mean there was one year, well yeah, during the pandemic, um, no one trick and treat you right that year. But yeah, Sherry did a good job researching, um, just events and places where you can drive through and, you know, may stay in your car, but they had different stations and um, I think that year there was so much candy that she got, because I think they only went to like three or four events. But I mean, the bags of bay, the candy she came back with was ridiculous. And.

Jon:

I think we did something similar. We went to, um, I think I, I'm not mistaken, I think it was, there was one at like Angel Stadium where they just had like a light show. Not light show, but like, they had like lights set up so you could just drive through like a little maze where it has different lights of like holiday settings and stuff. And they gave you like a little bag of like candy and

Daniel:

whatnot. But yeah. Yeah. All right. Yeah. So now if we miss anything, if you have like a, a tip, a favorite tip that you would like to share with everybody, please uh, message us and we will post that on our Instagram page. Um, so, alright. So should we move on to that draft?

Jon:

Oh, well, before we move on to that. Mm-hmm. I think we should ask next week. Uh, that's gonna be the week, The recording before Halloween, right?

Daniel:

No. Cause that Halloween's on a Monday. We record on Tuesdays now.

Jon:

Right. So what's today? So yeah, today's the 18th. So next week, let me just check the calendar here. So next week we be recording Tuesday, it'll be the 25th. Is this the week doing that at, Really know? I'm looking at a calendar right now, trying to argue you with a calendar. Uh, you're right. Good sir. Sorry. So that's, uh, our next recording before Halloween, and I think we should ask a question, should we dress up for that? Okay.

Daniel:

Okay. All right. So like, uh, are you in, I, how about this? You post a poll on tomorrow or this sometime this weekend on Instagram? Yeah. Yeah. And I will honor the results.

Jon:

Okay. Okay. I don't think anyone's gonna say no.

Daniel:

Okay. Let's see if they say, Yeah. Let's see. Let's

Jon:

see. no one. We got zero votes on this whole,

Daniel:

All right, so tonight Halloween movies now doesn't mess, doesn't mean scary movies, it just means Halloween movies. So, Oh, I should make it a little more specific. It's h Halloween movies that we've seen. So, like for instance, I'm not a big fan of scary movies, but I have seen a lot of like, family friendly, um, Halloween movies. So that's the direction I'm probably gonna go with. So we'll see. See what happens.

Jon:

How we doing? How many are we doing? We'll do five. Okay.

Daniel:

Okay, so we'll do it again like last time. We don't do the stink draft, but you will, um, you pick back and,

Jon:

and forth. Yeah. Okay.

Daniel:

So I will give you the first pick.

Jon:

Well, I mean, this is kind of a gimme, but we gotta go with hocus pocus. Okay. That's iconic Halloween movie. The sequel came out this year. Have you seen it?

Daniel:

I've seen some of it. Haven't seen all of it. You haven't seen all of it?

Jon:

Yeah. Did

Daniel:

you like the first one? Yeah. Okay. Um, yeah, I haven't seen the second one. Maybe again, I haven't seen it like all the way through to make a, a judgment, but, uh, Okay. For me, I watch this every year. Uh, I saw it about like 10 years ago for the first time. I had no idea what it was or what it was about. Honestly, I don't think I even heard of it to be honest. And then saw it and loved it. And so every year I, I watch this by myself because Sherry refuses to watch it with me, and that is a Rocky horror show.

Jon:

So I love this movie and I never get the name right. I always call it the Rocky Horror Picture Show, where I think that's the technical that's technically about it. But no, there's, I I always miss up the, the words like the Rocky Picture Horror Show or something. I, and yeah, my wife is four years. Hated that I can't get it right after so many years of loving this movie. You like it? Oh, I love that movie. I watch it every year.

Daniel:

Yeah, we watch every she get together. We should get together and watch. So I'm good. All right. Go ahead. It's you

Jon:

All right. Uh, let's see. So for another movie that I like to watch that's, you know, around the Halloween time is, uh, I think that one will still be there. So I'm gonna go with, um, I'm pretty sure I'm okay picking the series cause I don't think you really watched these, but, uh, Halloween Town. Okay. I'm not sure if you see, have you seen that series? It's a Disney series. No, they have Halloween Town. Halloween Town two Halloween High. But, um, if you guys haven't seen it, it's awesome for the kids to watch. It's not, you know, scary. It's, it's pretty fun. Family, family fun movie that is about, you know, Oh wait a minute. Car World. And then there's another world that's Halloween

Daniel:

Town. Oh no. Halloween Town. No, we just saw one. We saw a Halloween movie. A couple weeks ago, but I don't think that was it. I don't think it's what you're saying. What was it was on Disney. It's a, it's a Disney movie, but I'm not gonna tell you, I'm not gonna give you the answers. All right. So for me not to the best number two screen. Okay. I liked it. Yeah. I remember seeing that when it came out and going to the video store or talked about last week and ranting it. So yeah, I mean, I, I'll watch it when it's on. It's not something I search for, but enjoyed

Jon:

it. It's a classic. I love that one. Uh, so Migo, this is something that I love watching just cuz it is scary in the sense of it gets adrenaline pumping, um, paranormal activity. Okay. That's a great, great, great movie. Not gory, but definitely suspenseful. And if you're watching that in the dark or by yourself, you are not easily falling asleep.

Daniel:

Okay. I'm gonna go with a childhood favorite right here. Um, you already took this from me, um, a while back, but, um, it's gonna go with Casper.

Jon:

Just watch that movie that

Daniel:

night with the kids. Yeah. Yeah. Enjoy that. Danny is starting to come on board. Um, yeah, I like it. I like the friendly, I like my ghosts to be friendly. So yeah, we're all good. Awesome.

Jon:

Awesome. Right. Next movie for me, for the Halloween town. Uh, let's see, I am gonna go with, of.

Daniel:

LL try, I, me think, to think, Let me think.

Jon:

I'm gonna go with the, the 13th ghost. I mean, it's not necessarily Halloween movie, but it's one that I watch around the Halloween time of the year. But at 13th Ghost,

Daniel:

um,

Jon:

I'm assuming you never seen that

Daniel:

one. No. Yeah, of course not. No comment. So I can't judge. No. So this one I'm going with never really was, never really watched it. And until a few years ago, Danny saw it and she like, got in love with it and every Halloween she has to watch it at least 10 times. And I learned the Nightmare before Christmas.

Jon:

Okay, that was gonna be my last one.

Daniel:

Did you like, Oh, he's not gonna pick that one. So, We'll,

Jon:

I thought you were gonna pick some other fluffy Disney movie or something to go off of. But yeah, my pressure is know you were gonna Google it and that was at the top of the list that you probably would've went off of. So

Daniel:

again, this is the ones that I've seen. So like that's the first one that came to mind, to be honest,

Jon:

I'm so surprised you've seen that one. Why? I don't know. It just doesn't seem like you're

Daniel:

your cup of tea. I like music. I like Disney, Like Halloween.

Jon:

I've been a huge fan of this movie for decades. Never once heard you speak a word of it. Go

Daniel:

ahead. All right. What do you got?

Jon:

Last movie for me? We're gonna go with the classic, um, Halloween, Mike Myers. It's just, Yeah, it's a classic one that you're gonna want to watch. I, I don't know. I've always picked that one to watch over, like the other classic horror movies. Like Well,

Daniel:

that's the one where, uh, thick, A white mask. Right. And he's after, uh, Right. Okay. Is there a reason why he goes after that same girl every year? That's his sister. Oh, really? Okay. Yeah. Did not know that. Yeah. You learn something new every day. Thank you. Don.

Jon:

Watch the movie. Oh,

Daniel:

okay. So you left this wide open, um, It's, I mean, they're like, they're classics that I'm looking at right now, but I'm like, you know what? I haven't seen it. So again, off the table, the, uh, the integrity of Dead Draft is, uh, cause first, So let's see. What do I want to beat you with? There is one that I, I have in my mind on the top. Um, I don't know what made me watch it. I was, uh, you know, I'm gonna go with it. Um, yeah, I'm gonna go with it. So this wasn't on the list. I was just reading right now. Um, so I remember just same thing how I, how Rocky Horror Show came about. I just was. Was chasing the channel one day and I'm like, Oh, what's this? And, and I just started watching and I'm like, Oh my God. And I can't even believe I was watching it. Cause again, I'm not a big fan of horror movies and, but I just was glued, I was just struck. And, uh, I've watched it probably one more time after that. And, um, House of A Thousand

Jon:

Corps is, that's what it's called, right? Oh yes, that is one, that's one of my favorites as well. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's actually, yeah. Ah, man. Can't believe I forgot about that one. Yeah, that one. And then, uh, that we already picked our fight, right? Yeah. Another one that is an honorary one that, uh, I watch every year is, uh, the Hunter

Daniel:

Mansion. Okay. So I thought about doing that, but. I didn't see the whole thing, so I kind of just was like, again, not gonna put Dad draft in jeopardy of, uh, I'm gonna honor, I'm gonna honor the rules and therefore I kind of just, you left

Jon:

it off the list. Pretty interest. Your list is pretty interesting. There's a bunch of kids and kids movies, and then a House of a thousand course, which is totally a 180

Daniel:

from that. There was one where I thought about it, but then I didn't think it was Halloween enough. Like I didn't think it was, um, Which was that Coco?

Um,

Jon:

I mean, it's around the holiday season, but yeah. I wouldn't call it Halloween movie.

Daniel:

Well, um, that's a, a Halloween holiday in the Mexican. Um, culture. That's something, you know, Day of the Dead, the de mets. Yeah. I probably, I just couldn't say that, so that's why I didn't say it. Try pronounce it

Jon:

because that one, that one line there I just meth.

Daniel:

Um, Um, no, there was another one where I was on the fence about, um, I know what you did last summer. That was another one I saw the machine. Oh, that's a classic. But yeah. But that's what I'm gonna go with. And, uh, yeah. All right. So I think that's it. I think I'm good. Trying to help. And you wanna add?

Jon:

Yeah. So I gotta get my, my fun facts in for the episode. Okay. Um, actually I'm interested to see if you knew this, Daniel, Uh, the voices of Mickey and Minnie. Mm-hmm. the voice actors were actually married in real life. They married after. Yeah, they married after, um, I guess like working together and whatnot, but yeah, that's, that's an actual fact. There you go. I thought that was pretty interesting. That is pretty cool. Little

Daniel:

fun fact. I like the list you're putting together. So they stood. Good

Jon:

job. Thank you. Thank you. They actually, when they first got married, they didn't want, they kind of kept it quiet because I guess the, uh, I forgot who, I think it was the voice actor of Mickey was like, Oh, then everyone's gonna say Mickey married mi and I guess that was his, like, he didn't want that out and about or something on it. Weird. But yeah, so, um, so yeah, so they actually kept it quiet for quite some time. But yeah, they married each. Oh,

Daniel:

very cool. Very cool. All right, so that your fun fact today, and, uh, again, if you think of anything we missed off our, uh, Halloween segment, please let us know. Uh, other than that, have a great weekend and we'll see you guys next week from John and I don't go change it.
