Vision Series - From Cat to Catastrophe: Why Varying Orthographic Patterns Matters
Why does a student who can read “cat” get stuck on “catastrophe”? In this lively and practical episode of "Let’s Talk Teacher to Teacher," Dr. Gina Pepin breaks down why varying orthographic patterns during literacy intervention is a game-changer for young readers. Instead of getting stuck in an endless loop of CVC words, students deserve the tools and confidence to tackle real, unpredictable text.
Dr. Pepin walks listeners through four key stages of orthographic progression—from simple CVC beginnings to complex multisyllabic words—explaining how each stage helps students “level up” their reading skills. Learn why sequencing word complexity with visual development matters, and get ready for actionable insights on scaffolding word study so every student can move from decoding “cat” to conquering “catastrophe.”
Tune in for myth-busting, laughs, and classroom strategies you can use right away—because spelling mistakes aren’t failures, they’re milestones on the journey to literacy success!
