In this deeply moving episode of Music Industry Insights Worldwide, Saskhia Menendez is joined by Nino Mayanna, a Nigerian-born singer whose life story is as powerful as her music.

Raised on the streets of Lagos with little sense of what the future might hold, Nino’s life changed dramatically when her father was called home to ascend his ancestral throne — revealing her lineage as an African Princess and descendant of a King and Pan-African war hero. Thrust suddenly into the spotlight at a young age, her world shifted overnight.

In 2007, Nino faced another life-altering moment when she survived a devastating gas explosion, leaving her both physically and mentally scarred. The near-death experience deeply impacted her confidence and sense of direction — but it also became the catalyst for her artistic awakening. Through music, Nino found healing, strength, and purpose.

In this conversation, she shares how songwriting became a lifeline, how she pioneered the use of the Talking Drum within R&B, and how cultural identity, resilience, and creativity have shaped her sound. Now a multi-talented and versatile artiste, Nino blends genres and traditions to create something entirely her own.

We also explore her recent achievement of graduating with a First Class Master’s degree in Research in Performing Arts, her collaborations with respected artists and industry leaders, and how she continues to evolve as both an artist and a woman reclaiming her narrative.

This episode is a story of survival, heritage, healing, and the transformative power of music.
