You are listening to Confidently Beautiful with Ciera, a podcast to help you stay confidently beautiful, because we all have confidence inside us. We just need to bring it out and I'm here to show you how Body image, dreams, parenting style, personality and more here we cover it all Get ready to stay confidently beautiful. Can you believe that we are already almost done with July? There's only a couple weeks left in July, and where has the summer gone, is my question. I just can't even believe how fast time goes, especially the older my kids get and the busier life seems to get with the kids and work and everything. It's just crazy how fast time is going. I really hope that you enjoyed last week's episode. It was episode number 42 and it was about yoga and how yoga can help you to love your body. If you want to listen to that episode, go back and listen to it. This week I have a really fun episode, kind of a different thing than yoga, but it still has a lot to do with body.

Ciera Lancaster:

Today's episode is going to be dressing for your body type and dressing with confidence. I got to interview my friend, rachel. She has a styling business and she shares some really, really practical tips that you can use instantly today as you walk into your closet and you are trying to decide what to wear. She also shares some things that you can keep in mind as you're adding to your wardrobe and making sure that you are finding clothes that are good for your body type, for your image and your style, and not conforming to just what is trendy, but doing what is going to look best on your body and what you are going to feel the most confident in. Here. It is my episode with Rachel. I'm excited for you to listen. Hello, rachel, thank you so much for being here. I am so excited to have this conversation about dressing for your body type and confidence and styling tips that we can use just in our everyday lives. It's going to be such a fun conversation. Can you tell a little bit about yourself?

Rachel Barnett:

Yeah, of course, Ciera, thank you so much for having me. I am seriously so excited to be here. So thank you again. And yeah, so about me, I started getting into styling because of my third baby. I have three boys and after my third baby, I ended up having a C-section and my body changed like every pregnancy, but this one was way different and, finally, I had no clothes to wear or anything like that, and I never left the house. I stopped using my talents, all of that, and my confidence really, really shot pretty bad. So I knew that there was a way that I could be confident and look good with my body. Now as it is, I just didn't have the tools. So I really went on this journey and I went back to school and thank goodness it was during 2020, when school was online, so I had a lot more opportunities to go back to college and do all the schooling I needed to do at home with three kids.

Ciera Lancaster:

Yeah, you could still juggle them.

Rachel Barnett:

Yeah, and do that. So that was a blessing there and I loved it so much and I learned so much from my body. But I knew that this is a tool that every woman needs to know. Every woman needs to know how to dress their body in every single season of life. So that's kind of like how I got into styling and, yeah, that's a little bit about me. I love it.

Rachel Barnett:

So what did you go to school for? So originally I went to cosmetology school and I did hair for a little bit, and then, while I was doing hair, I ended up doing a boutique with that. But then, after I didn't know how to dress my body, I realized that clothing isn't really like. It's fine to sell clothes I love clothes but in the end you need to know how to use the clothes, and so I didn't fully align with selling a boutique and pushing clothes on people that I couldn't even put on my body or feel confident in, and so I really knew that I needed to have clothing. How to style clothes that was the main key. So that's what I originally did, and then I ended up going to school for fashion styling and just took lots of different styling courses and with different mentors too. That really helped me on that journey and how to dress myself and everything too.

Ciera Lancaster:

I love that. It reminds me of the movie. Have you seen the movie the Intern?

Rachel Barnett:

Yes.

Ciera Lancaster:

I love that movie and it's about the fit. It's the styling company that he's an intern for, and I just watched that on Sunday so it's fresh in my mind, I didn't watch that again. Yes, so that's what it reminds me of is finding clothes that you can buy, that actually you're going to fit. So it reminds me of that and then also we'll talk about it. But finding clothes that are for you, like, that are me like your personality and everything that you stand for, and so I love that.

Ciera Lancaster:

That's so fun. So what kinds of things do you do for your business? Do you style for individuals? Do you style for weddings? What do you offer Individual?

Rachel Barnett:

I love helping individuals find the personality and express it in their style. I feel like every single person has so much to offer and we kind of grow up with these. You know, when you're little, think about how much fun it was to get dressed and you were just yourself and that was enough and you didn't worry about how clothes looked or about fitting in. But as we get older, you start to feel like you have to conform and you have to look the same, you have to act the same, you have to be the same as everyone else to get accepted and you kind of start to lose a part of you that is so special and so unique that only you have to offer. And it's kind of sad and heartbreaking.

Rachel Barnett:

But I even see it as adults Like, especially in different cultures and different societies. There's like the suburban mom and there's like the workout moms, and we kind of start to conform. People tend to want to fit in and to be accepted by their peers and there's nothing wrong with having friends and all of that. But I think the thing that's so priceless that we keep forgetting is that we are all unique and we all have something to offer. And at Matter, that's my business that I have At Matter. We really embrace the individual and honor our unique differences, and so when I style people, I love the personal staff, because it's not about conforming, it's about helping you know who you are and dress your worth and know your worth and live your worth. It's all about that. I love that.

Ciera Lancaster:

So pretend I was your client and I said, Rachel, I want you to style me Like what would be your very first step, as you're getting to know somebody and styling somebody.

Rachel Barnett:

Yes. So I have a few different tiers. So the very first thing I do is I have them fill out this style form that has all these questionnaires that I can help get to know them about what they're really looking for, what they're really offering or wanting and hoping for with their clothes, maybe some of the frustrations they've already experienced and what they're trying to troubleshoot. Then we meet on a one-on-one call. It's a complimentary call that we get together and I really just get to know the individual because, again, it's individual. So everything I do is about the individual. So then, after that call, then I send over a proposal and every proposal is unique to their things and so it's very personalized.

Rachel Barnett:

I don't like the fluff of like, oh, one package fits all. I don't believe in that, you know. So when I sent over that proposal, it literally has what we talked about and only the things that they need. Some of the things, the basic stuff that people tend to want is, I do like closet edits where they Are so overwhelmed by their clothes they don't even know if they have clothes that fits them or works for them, and so that's kind of like the foundation that a lot of people want. They want To see what they have and if they have clothes that they can use and work with, or maybe if they just styled it differently or if they had someone tailor some clothes, or maybe they need someone professional to tell them to let go of some clothes too.

Ciera Lancaster:

My clothes have been their closet for like 10 years, like I know I probably have.

Rachel Barnett:

Yeah, I'm like we hold on and and there's some clothes I believe in sentimental clothes too, like everyone you know like, but then maybe that's a good place to have in, like a Special memento box, not in your closet where you're never gonna wear it, yeah, and it's just taking up space and it makes you feel like you have nothing to wear.

Rachel Barnett:

And then another basic one that a lot of people kind of gravitated to is actually doing a shopping trip, especially since a lot of the trends have changed and there's a lot of moms that are working and they just feel very Dated or irrelevant to the times but they don't know how to shop, and so that's something I'm seeing a lot more recently where they just need a fresh look that really embodies their new um Evolution, that they're in with their business or with their mom phase um. And then another basic one, the last final, like basic one, that I really focus on is a look book where we I I go through all of their outfits, whether it's from the just the closet, the shopping trip or both, and I curate looks in a personal pdf book and I do style notes and I organize it however they need, if it's by Locations or themes, like you know, like these are all the daily wears or the formal wears or maybe date night looks or whatever it is, and I like curate all these outfits so they Always know what to wear.

Ciera Lancaster:

They always have some their phones, yeah, because then like when you're gone, they're like wait when am I gonna wear it today? Yeah, it's so nice, so nice. So when you go on shopping trips, do you prefer online shopping? Do you actually go to stores with them? What's what's your go-to?

Rachel Barnett:

My favorite is in person, but the majority of my clients are online, yeah, and I still love that too, but it is a different. It's not like you're shopping with friends, and I think that's why I love the in person, because I I I tend to spoil them a little bit and, like you know, have little like drinks and snacks ready for them, like it's just fun for me, that's so fun.

Rachel Barnett:

And then the dressing room and everything like just getting the clothes organized for them and it's not stressful at all and I think that's the best feeling in the world is seeing them like. I mean it's vulnerable, like especially shopping with women and but seeing how they're so lit up and so grateful and how they have this experience that they have been fighting to, like go shopping and everything. But then they come out of that experience feeling so lifted and so Like everything's lighter and and it was so fun, and they're like man, I didn't really shopping could be this fun again. It's been years and and so I love the in person because it is a little more connected.

Ciera Lancaster:

I love that. I know it's like my least favorite thing in the world to shop for is jeans because you know, as a mom, you have like A different body than you did pre kids and so and every kid I feel like it changes a little bit. So like that's like my least favorite thing to shop for. So I can like having a Friend, but also a friend who knows what you're doing. Like that would be like the nicest thing. But I could also totally understand the vulnerability and like feeling nervous and, like you know, because it is vulnerable and you're like you're showing parts of your body that maybe you don't like just see, like yeah, these jeans aren't not gonna work for you, like you know. I mean I know you say it nice, I said you know, but you know, like so to have somebody who knows what they're talking about, I'm sure it would be so nice.

Rachel Barnett:

Well, and especially since I measure beforehand and I go before they show up, and I already, you know, there's a lot of different department stores that work with stylists, which is so nice because, yeah, so then I am able to save looks and I tell them that I am shopping for a client, and and so it really is a seamless process. That's so awesome.

Ciera Lancaster:

So they basically just go to the dressing room when you have everything ready for them. Yep, all the outfits laid out.

Rachel Barnett:

So yeah, they literally just go and we just have lots of fun snacks. And they try on clothes and we talk and we laugh and we sometimes cry you know it's emotional and vulnerable. Yeah, but it's just fun.

Ciera Lancaster:

I love it. That is so fun. I love that and I'm like you said. It brings the joy of shopping again, because shopping should be fun.

Rachel Barnett:

It should be a fun thing. It's in the best rom-com, like mantras you know they have like those like shopping mantras that we want to, we recreate.

Ciera Lancaster:

Yeah, we want that in our life. Yeah, do you have like favorite stores that you go to with your clients or does it really depend on the client and their Personality or their age or all of that?

Rachel Barnett:

I have some preferences, of course, but the the clients really have an idea of where they want to go, where they feel comfortable, but um and so online I usually cater it to them, but in person I try to help them like branch out a little bit, because I feel like when you go to the same places that you've already been to, you You're you're already feeling stuck, you're already feeling, and so sometimes it's nice to try something new and it's feel safer when you're with the professional. That Understands it. But one of my favorite thing places to shop is local boutiques. There's something magical about that like small town and again it has that personal touch. So usually wherever they are locally, and the few local shopping that I've done in person has been northern Utah and I just love going into like these little boutiques or these little hidden gems, yeah, from their town, and I kind of do some research beforehand and I meet the owners beforehand and it's just been fun. I love that that's such a fun experience.

Ciera Lancaster:

What are some of your like very best tips for dressing with confidence, like if somebody were to just go into their closet and or Maybe even like look online or go into a store. Like what are your go-to tips?

Rachel Barnett:

My number one thing I would suggest for everyone is to dress your body type. Dress your body type, and maybe it's just because of that. That was my personal journey where I had a new body. But there is something about when you see someone else like a Influencer or something that looks good, or you see something that looks good on a mankin, and then you try to recreate it and it doesn't look the same. There's nothing more crushing than that. There's nothing more like, oh Like. It just feels so personal because it looked good on them, or it looked good on the mankin, or you know, yeah, and it just like, but it didn't look good on me.

Rachel Barnett:

But when you understand your body type, you you separate it where it's not a personal thing.

Rachel Barnett:

It is no like that worked for them because and you kind of have the science behind it, because they have this body. And it's not about body size, it's about shape, it's about, you know, the different features that we each have, which there's no right or wrong, it is all beautiful and so, and there's like, not one body that looks the same. I know we always try to like, type ourselves into these different bodies, but I'm actually working on this new program that's gonna be a little bit more personal body type, so it's not one of the main seven that I normally, that most stylists usually use, and it's actually has 96 different body type. Wow, I know it's insane, but I I've been loving it so much so I've been in these courses learning all about that and I'm gonna be launching that in October, hopefully Like pre launching it with a few people to kind of like test out, see how it goes. So that one I'm really excited about because it is way more personal, because nobody is the same.

Ciera Lancaster:

Yeah, well, 96 to choose from. Like that's amazing. Yeah, different combinations, yeah, and think how much, like, if you understood that, like that would make such a difference.

Rachel Barnett:

Yeah, even just your own body. Like yeah, because that's all you have to worry about. You know, if you just understood your own body, as your body evolves, you will constantly know how to like dress it and know what looks good and then you never like. After I've gone through this whole process there's I never feel bad in my clothes. I always feel like I have something to wear because I understand my body type, I know what looks good, what flatters, and it's so liberating to know when you see a influencer have something and know right away that I'm not gonna spend that money on it because it's not gonna work. Or, if I do, I have to style it in a different way that it will cater to my body, and it's just, it is very liberating. So that's the number one thing I would say for confidence is know your body, know your body type. No colors that look good on you know what genre you you prefer. You know and there's lots of different genres like classic or boho or sporty or, you know, minimalist there's so many different things but kind of know your style too. I love that.

Rachel Barnett:

Any other tips? My, I would probably say the rule of three, someone, that something you can do today is the rule of three you have Want, like you always have three things in your outfit, whether that's one dress, a fun hat, and Like a belt around the the dress, or like what I'm wearing today I'm wearing a skirt and a top and a cover, and if like a button down, and if I'm not wearing the button down over the shirt, I'm wearing it around my waist. And so it's like that rule of three where there's like three pieces to your outfit. Um, that one is like really balancing to the eye, like artistic, like having the rule of three and just to Not have a flat outfit where it's just two pieces or just a dress, but you add some elements to make it a little bit more depth.

Ciera Lancaster:

So what would be some elements like? Would you consider a necklace one of the three, or or does it need to be like more of an Article of clothing to be one of the three?

Rachel Barnett:

the.

Ciera Lancaster:

You could do a necklace, but it has to be more of a statement necklace, Okay so not just like a tiny little, like what I'm wearing, a tiny little chain like yeah, something big like something that or something that really stands out on an outfit.

Rachel Barnett:

Yeah, maybe you have like a high neck like turtleneck and like that's solid navy blue and you have like a string of pearls over it or something like that. So, yeah, even though that necklace may not be like really chunky and bold, it's something classic and small, like a pearl necklace, but it pops against the turtleneck, yeah, so it's still kind of as that element. I would even say like sometimes you could do lipstick that's a little bit more bold.

Ciera Lancaster:

But would you say to like, do you have an opinion on like capsule wardrobes or like, do you feel like they're too boring and like, or have you found that you have clients that like, thrive on like having a capsule wardrobe?

Rachel Barnett:

I Honestly love capsule wardrobes. I think the biggest misconception is that it has to be neutral colors. I have found that when you cater your clothes to your personality and to the colors you like, it can still be a capsule wardrobe and you can mix and match with color, and so that would be. My biggest thing is, if you're gonna do a capsule wardrobe, don't try to conform into all of the minimalists. Unless that's totally you and that's like your personality and you own that, then do that. Otherwise, I think everyone should have a capsule wardrobe in their aesthetic Going back to the influencer thing.

Ciera Lancaster:

Do you suggest to your clients that they don't follow influencers anymore that are like fashion influencers, or is there a way that you could maybe find an influencer once you know, like, what your body type is Like? Do you have like ways that they could find somebody to help inspire them, because I think inspiration is really important? So what's your advice? To help them keep to keep getting that inspiration, trying to things.

Rachel Barnett:

I don't limit them on anything with who they follow or anything like that, even though I know there's some people that feel like if they follow someone that has this similar body type, then that's great. But I, like you said, inspiration. I get inspiration from all different walks of life. I get inspiration. I even got inspiration from my grandpa when we were sitting at where were we? We were at Texas Roadhouse and he was freaking with the peanuts Maybe I shouldn't be sharing this for anyone that knows my grandpa. He was sitting with the peanuts and he was putting the peanut shells on the ground, so I was looking at him and then I looked at his shoes because he was just dropping them, and I ended up taking a picture because he actually looked like pretty, like something that girls could wear, you know, like with the khakis and the white sneakers, and then like the polo striped shirt and I'm like man, he actually looks pretty good. I ended up taking a picture and I'm working, I'm trying to find a polo shirt because I want to recreate that outfit.

Ciera Lancaster:

I think that was good, grandpa.

Rachel Barnett:

Thanks for dropping those peanuts shells.

Rachel Barnett:

So I can see your out your shoes. So I love getting inspiration from everywhere, like even like from pretty drink colors or like that's where inspiration comes from the world. Like I started doing this hashtag inspired by life because I literally get inspired from life, like that's where you get inspiration. And so with influencers, like they are so great at inspiring and there's always some element that you can, if you like something about their outfit, dissect it, because maybe it's not about having the same exact clothing, but maybe it's the colors, or maybe it's the way that it fit, or maybe it's the aesthetic of it, or maybe it was nothing about the outfit, maybe it was just about how you know the backdrop of where she was that inspired you. But yeah, so I never limit people. I love that Okay.

Ciera Lancaster:

Can you tell us, like, how do we even start with knowing what our body type is? I mean, obviously, if we come to you, you're the main expert and you would definitely like give some good tips. But if somebody were just like standing in their bathroom, like trying to figure out what the heck their body type is, what would you say?

Rachel Barnett:

There's two things that you can do right away If you do not have one of those measuring tapes. That is not like a ruler but like actual cloth, like a sewing one.

Rachel Barnett:

Yes, like a sewing measuring tape. If you don't have one of those, there's a simple solution you just get string, okay, and you, you know, cut off a huge amount, like enough for you to measure your whole body, what you know, and then you mark where you measure and then you just take a ruler and you can measure the measurement. So there's like always a solution there. But definitely measure your body, you measure it at your best, which is you can do kind of like the bra line area and if you measure it there, make sure you're not wearing a bra, or like you just wear like a tank top, like you know, something loose, or like sports bra without padding, something like that. So you can really get the form and like the shape of it, you know. And you just go right across the, the front and you always take a deep breath in, you always go, and then you like breathe into the measuring and mark that down, and then you do it right at the smallest part of your waist, so it's below your rib cage, above your belly button, and again you take a deep breath in and out and then when you release, that's when you mark what that measuring is and then you do it again at your waist. This one you it's not at the widest heart, widest part of your hips, like most people think, it's kind of like at your bum and like right thigh, it's kind of like that area and you measure across there and again you breathe in and you measure that, and then you don't have to do this. But you can also measure your shoulder width and just get that measurement down and you do that one through the back. So you're going to need someone to help you with that and you want to like hold your shoulder, like just stand up straight and relax you don't want to be super tight or rigid and just get it from one shoulder to the other, just the back, not not across, not across, just across the back. Yes, so yeah, you don't wrap that one around. That's the only one you don't wrap around. And then, after you have those measurements, then the shoulders aside, you look at the, the first three, the shoulder aside you take those three measurements, the first three, and you see what the numbers are. If they're all basically within like one centimeter oh yeah, you want to measure this in centimeter, I shouldn't know. If they're all like one centimeter apart then you have a very like straight silhouette, those. There are two different types of that. There is a lean column and a rectangle. Column, or a rectangle is what we call it, those two and so you're one of those. Lean column is basically more like you're more tall and like more slender, I guess, but then the rectangle is just more average height and normal width, and so you're probably one of those.

Rachel Barnett:

But if you have your, if your hips are like really really Like five numbers, five centimeters bigger than your bust, then it's a pretty good indicator that you are a pair, which the majority of women are. And then if you feel like your bust and your hips are pretty equal, like they're one centimeter apart, and then your waist is like way smaller, like probably like between three to five centimeters apart, then that one, there's two. For that one there's a hourglass, a neat it's called neat hourglass or a full hourglass. And so If the waist is like more drastic, like five centimeters or more, then that one's more of a neat hourglass because it's a little bit more defined. But then the if it's closer, like three centimeters apart from the bust and the hips, then that one's a full hourglass and then if you feel like your waist is really small but then your bust is bigger, then you might be more of an inverted triangle. But then if you feel like that's the case because it's super, it's still common or still there's still a lot of women that have this, but it's not as common it's. And if you do you it's kind of more like athletic body You'd want to measure, you want to see your shoulder measurement. If you feel like your waist is really small but your bust is really big, then check your shoulder measurement because then you are probably An inverted triangle. And if your shoulder width is also pretty wide compared to your hips, like bigger than your hips, then you are more inverted triangle and that shape.

Rachel Barnett:

There's a lot of fun things that you can do to style and like. Sometimes I'm jealous of that shape because there is so many fun things that you can wear, like dusters and everything like that, and then if you feel like your waist is like if not like a little bit bigger or or Closer to your bust and your hips, then that one's more apple. So those are the seven that Stylist typically use to measure and do all that. So that's one way you can do it. Another way that you can do?

Rachel Barnett:

It Is just take a picture. Make sure you wear something like a black tank top and black biker shorts or something like that and just take pictures. Make sure your camera is not tilted or anything and it's like eye level and you stand up, you know against, you know like a normal distance apart where you can see your whole body. You don't want to be too close and just take some pictures of yourself, because sometimes it's easy to see it like visually, if you feel like oh yeah, I can see my, my lines pretty well or I can kind of see the different shapes, and maybe that one might be more for people that are artists or like know and understand different shapes and how to Like if you were gonna draw someone yeah, yeah, how you would draw their stand lines already.

Rachel Barnett:

Yeah then that one might be a little bit easier. But I have found that a lot of people get a little bit more clarity when they have a visual too.

Ciera Lancaster:

What that? Do you have any free resources that could help people as they're measuring themselves?

Rachel Barnett:

Yeah, of course. So on my website I have this whole section full of free downloads with tons of different style tips and Information, but also on Instagram I have a lot of content I create that Just gives information and style tips and inspo and all of that.

Ciera Lancaster:

I love that. I will put your information in the show notes, but can you just tell the listeners what your Instagram handle is and your website?

Rachel Barnett:

Yeah, it's matter. Dot by rage. So it's m a t t r. Dot by R a, c, h and yes, there is no e in matter. I did not just leave that out. Love that in the website. Oh, yes, it is. Rachel, be stylist. Comm R a, c, h, e, l, b. Just the letter B s t y l I s t com.

Ciera Lancaster:

Thank you. I'm like I'm gonna go and look at all those freebies Because I could sit here and talk to you forever about like I'm like getting all these ideas and thinking of all these things in my own closet.

Rachel Barnett:

So I love that.

Ciera Lancaster:

Yes, Okay. What is one thing that you do every day to help you feel more confident?

Rachel Barnett:

get dressed head to toe every day, every single day, because if you are dressed head to toe, then you are prepared for anything. If Someone randomly comes to your house, you're prepared. If you need to rush your kid to the ER, you're prepared, you're ready to go, and it just that preparedness gives me so much confidence.

Ciera Lancaster:

Oh yeah, that's a good point like I've never I mean, there have been a lot of times when someone has come to my husband I'm like, uh, I'm gonna shower today, but so yeah, but that's having that preparedness like like eases your mind in a lot of different ways.

Ciera Lancaster:

So I love that tip. I've never heard that one before when I've asked people, so I love hearing that. Well, thank you so much, rachel. This was fun I could. I've learned so much already and I want you to be my stylist, like she's like you're like so smart.

Ciera Lancaster:

I love it.
