I am so excited to present to you the very first episode of "Stream the Magic: Music Behind the Attractions". In this episode, we're going to explore the enchanting sounds of one of EPCOT's most beloved and missed attractions—Horizons.

[Intro Music fades out]

For those who might not be familiar, Horizons was a visionary attraction in EPCOT that opened in 1983 and closed its doors in 1999. It was often referred to as the spiritual successor to the Carousel of Progress, offering a glimpse into the future with a nostalgic nod to the past. But today, we won't be taking you through the attraction's story or its innovative ride system. Instead, we're here to talk about the heart and soul of Horizons—the music that brought its vision of tomorrow to life.

**Host:** The musical journey of Horizons was a masterful composition crafted to inspire, uplift, and immerse guests in the future they could only dream of. The main theme, known as "New Horizons," was composed by George Wilkins, a prolific Disney composer known for his work on attractions like "Country Bear Jamboree" and "Wonders of China."

Wilkins’ score for Horizons was a blend of orchestral grandeur and futuristic sounds, creating a soundscape that felt both epic and intimately optimistic. The "New Horizons" theme played a crucial role in setting the tone for the entire experience.

**George Wilkins’** theme was both an anthem and a narrative device. It encapsulated the spirit of exploration and the promise of new beginnings. From the moment guests entered the pavilion, they were greeted with this inspiring music, inviting them to embark on a journey through the possibilities of the future.

**Host:** But it wasn't just the main theme that made Horizons' music special. The attraction featured various scenes depicting different aspects of future life, each accompanied by its unique musical motif. These motifs helped to convey the story and the emotions of each scene, enhancing the immersive experience.

For instance, in the "Desert Habitat" scene, guests experienced a thriving community living in what was once an arid desert. The music here was light and airy, filled with whimsical touches that suggested innovation and harmony with nature. It was a beautiful juxtaposition to the harsh environment, illustrating how humanity could adapt and thrive.

**Host:** Then there was the "Undersea Colony" scene, a fan favorite. The music here was ethereal, with an almost aquatic quality, featuring bubbling sounds and sweeping melodies that gave the impression of being deep underwater. This was no accident; the music needed to convey both the wonder and the tranquility of life beneath the waves.

**Host:** The "Space Colony" scene, on the other hand, had a more futuristic and adventurous tone. The music here was filled with electronic elements and a faster tempo, reflecting the excitement and challenges of living in outer space. The soundscape was crafted to make guests feel like pioneers on the final frontier.

**Host:** Another significant aspect of Horizons’ music was its use of leitmotifs. A leitmotif is a recurring musical theme associated with a particular idea, character, or place. Wilkins used these motifs to tie different parts of the attraction together, creating a cohesive narrative through music.

One such leitmotif was a hopeful, ascending melody that recurred throughout the ride, symbolizing human progress and the endless possibilities of the future. Whether you were in a desert, underwater, or in space, this melody would subtly remind you of the unifying theme of Horizons—looking forward to a better tomorrow.

**Host:** The impact of Horizons' music extended beyond the attraction itself. For many guests, the music became synonymous with the ideals of EPCOT—a celebration of human achievement and potential. It was an aural embodiment of Walt Disney's vision of a utopian future, where technology and imagination work hand in hand.

When Horizons closed in 1999, it left behind not just memories but also a musical legacy. Fans of the attraction continue to celebrate its music, sharing recordings and reminiscing about how it made them feel. The soundtrack is a testament to the power of music in storytelling, especially within the magical world of Disney.

**Host:** As we wrap up this episode, let’s take a moment to appreciate the genius of George Wilkins and the timeless music of Horizons. Though the attraction is gone, its music continues to inspire and remind us of the boundless potential of the future.

Thank you for joining me on this melodic journey through Horizons. Be sure to tune in next time as we explore more musical treasures from Disney’s theme parks. Until then, keep dreaming and keep listening.
