When I was a kid, we had"},{"startTime":100.38,"endTime":104.34,"body":"our shitzu Charlie, we adopted a"},{"startTime":104.34,"endTime":108.12,"body":"husky that was abused, I don't"},{"startTime":104.34,"endTime":108.12,"body":"really remember him. And I used"},{"startTime":108.12,"endTime":113.19,"body":"to dog sit a lot. There were two"},{"startTime":108.12,"endTime":113.19,"body":"Yorkies who would lose their"},{"startTime":113.19,"endTime":116.91,"body":"minds at the sight of other dogs"},{"startTime":113.19,"endTime":116.91,"body":"or people. And I just thought it"},{"startTime":116.91,"endTime":120.0,"body":"was small dog syndrome. And"},{"startTime":116.91,"endTime":120.0,"body":"there were two separate"},{"startTime":120.03,"endTime":125.01,"body":"GSD/Corgi mixes- adorable dogs-"},{"startTime":120.03,"endTime":125.01,"body":"who were very reactive, one of"},{"startTime":125.01,"endTime":129.66,"body":"them was a bite risk. And I just"},{"startTime":125.01,"endTime":129.66,"body":"thought that maybe it was breed"},{"startTime":129.66,"endTime":132.39,"body":"traits, or that they were just"},{"startTime":129.66,"endTime":132.39,"body":"an untrained dog. But these are"},{"startTime":132.39,"endTime":134.16,"body":"just a few of the dogs that I've"},{"startTime":132.39,"endTime":134.16,"body":"encountered."},{"startTime":134.31,"endTime":137.61,"body":"Not having that knowledge about"},{"startTime":134.31,"endTime":137.61,"body":"what reactivity is, where it"},{"startTime":137.61,"endTime":141.9,"body":"stems from, how to help the"},{"startTime":137.61,"endTime":141.9,"body":"dogs, I just assumed that it was"},{"startTime":141.93,"endTime":146.22,"body":"them. And it led me to be"},{"startTime":141.93,"endTime":146.22,"body":"frustrated with the dogs or"},{"startTime":146.22,"endTime":152.07,"body":"embarrassed, trying to avoid"},{"startTime":146.22,"endTime":152.07,"body":"situations or fleeing situations"},{"startTime":152.1,"endTime":157.62,"body":"just because I felt that I had"},{"startTime":152.1,"endTime":157.62,"body":"troubled dogs. It wasn't until"},{"startTime":157.62,"endTime":161.88,"body":"Reese that I truly understood"},{"startTime":157.62,"endTime":161.88,"body":"reactivity and knew what it was"},{"startTime":161.88,"endTime":165.3,"body":"called. And also when that"},{"startTime":161.88,"endTime":165.3,"body":"reactivity is coming from a"},{"startTime":165.3,"endTime":169.02,"body":"rescue dog with a traumatic"},{"startTime":165.3,"endTime":169.02,"body":"past, it made more sense to me."},{"startTime":169.44,"endTime":172.86,"body":"Of course, I also now know that"},{"startTime":169.44,"endTime":172.86,"body":"it's not just rescues or dogs"},{"startTime":172.86,"endTime":176.37,"body":"that have been abused. It's not"},{"startTime":172.86,"endTime":176.37,"body":"'the other end of the leash' or"},{"startTime":176.4,"endTime":179.55,"body":"'all in how you raise them'. It"},{"startTime":176.4,"endTime":179.55,"body":"can be the puppies, it can be a"},{"startTime":179.55,"endTime":183.18,"body":"dog that you don't even know why"},{"startTime":179.55,"endTime":183.18,"body":"it's reactive, but it can be"},{"startTime":183.18,"endTime":186.69,"body":"genetics, no matter where it"},{"startTime":183.18,"endTime":186.69,"body":"comes from dealing with your"},{"startTime":186.69,"endTime":191.4,"body":"dog's reactivity is a difficult"},{"startTime":186.69,"endTime":191.4,"body":"process and involves hard work"},{"startTime":191.4,"endTime":194.34,"body":"and patience. And oftentimes"},{"startTime":191.4,"endTime":194.34,"body":"running in the opposite"},{"startTime":194.34,"endTime":195.57,"body":"direction to avoid triggers."},{"startTime":195.72,"endTime":200.13,"body":"Having a reactive dog makes"},{"startTime":195.72,"endTime":200.13,"body":"tasks such as walking around the"},{"startTime":200.13,"endTime":204.42,"body":"block or going to the vet very"},{"startTime":200.13,"endTime":204.42,"body":"stressful. You may avoid walks"},{"startTime":204.42,"endTime":207.0,"body":"altogether or do walks when the"},{"startTime":204.42,"endTime":207.0,"body":"rest of the world is still"},{"startTime":207.0,"endTime":209.82,"body":"sleeping. First, I want to say"},{"startTime":207.0,"endTime":209.82,"body":"that I applaud the work that"},{"startTime":209.82,"endTime":212.25,"body":"you're doing and the effort that"},{"startTime":209.82,"endTime":212.25,"body":"you're putting in to take care"},{"startTime":212.25,"endTime":215.82,"body":"of your reactive dog. You're"},{"startTime":212.25,"endTime":215.82,"body":"doing such a great job. I know"},{"startTime":215.82,"endTime":218.52,"body":"it's frustrating. I know it's"},{"startTime":215.82,"endTime":218.52,"body":"hard. Without the understanding"},{"startTime":218.52,"endTime":221.16,"body":"of reactivity and only being"},{"startTime":218.52,"endTime":221.16,"body":"with those dogs either as a"},{"startTime":221.16,"endTime":224.19,"body":"child who didn't know any"},{"startTime":221.16,"endTime":224.19,"body":"different, or for short side"},{"startTime":224.19,"endTime":227.46,"body":"jobs. Again, I was just"},{"startTime":224.19,"endTime":227.46,"body":"embarrassed of their behaviors"},{"startTime":227.46,"endTime":230.85,"body":"and avoided their triggers so"},{"startTime":227.46,"endTime":230.85,"body":"not to cause a scene. Getting"},{"startTime":230.85,"endTime":234.99,"body":"Reese, knowing how fearful and"},{"startTime":230.85,"endTime":234.99,"body":"lacking confidence he was, I"},{"startTime":234.99,"endTime":237.21,"body":"knew he needed help; that it"},{"startTime":234.99,"endTime":237.21,"body":"isn't his fault."},{"startTime":237.21,"endTime":240.36,"body":"And even though I was still"},{"startTime":237.21,"endTime":240.36,"body":"often embarrassed when he or Rey"},{"startTime":240.36,"endTime":243.87,"body":"would react, I was and am more"},{"startTime":240.36,"endTime":243.87,"body":"focused on what they need and"},{"startTime":243.87,"endTime":247.35,"body":"how to help them. How a lot of"},{"startTime":243.87,"endTime":247.35,"body":"people out there need to help"},{"startTime":247.38,"endTime":251.4,"body":"us. Refer to my episode My"},{"startTime":247.38,"endTime":251.4,"body":"Letter to the Friendly Dog. But"},{"startTime":251.4,"endTime":255.66,"body":"the entire way that I viewed"},{"startTime":251.4,"endTime":255.66,"body":"reactivity changed once I got"},{"startTime":255.66,"endTime":258.57,"body":"Reese and I realized that they"},{"startTime":255.66,"endTime":258.57,"body":"weren't just a bad dog. It"},{"startTime":258.57,"endTime":262.29,"body":"wasn't just small dogs syndrome,"},{"startTime":258.57,"endTime":262.29,"body":"it was reactivity, and you need"},{"startTime":262.29,"endTime":266.04,"body":"to help those dogs. So bringing"},{"startTime":262.29,"endTime":266.04,"body":"Reese home, my fearful,"},{"startTime":266.07,"endTime":270.6,"body":"reactive, bully mix dog, opened"},{"startTime":266.07,"endTime":270.6,"body":"my eyes to the reality of"},{"startTime":270.6,"endTime":275.22,"body":"reactivity. And it also brought"},{"startTime":270.6,"endTime":275.22,"body":"out the reactivity in me. Having"},{"startTime":275.22,"endTime":278.97,"body":"Reese, knowing his past,"},{"startTime":275.22,"endTime":278.97,"body":"bringing home a bully mix- I"},{"startTime":278.97,"endTime":281.91,"body":"knew the looks that we were"},{"startTime":278.97,"endTime":281.91,"body":"going to get. I knew that when"},{"startTime":281.91,"endTime":286.02,"body":"he reacted towards a person or a"},{"startTime":281.91,"endTime":286.02,"body":"dog what the strangers might be"},{"startTime":286.02,"endTime":289.68,"body":"thinking. I wanted to do"},{"startTime":286.02,"endTime":289.68,"body":"everything in my power to show"},{"startTime":289.77,"endTime":293.28,"body":"him in a different light, or to"},{"startTime":289.77,"endTime":293.28,"body":"at least proclaim that he's a"},{"startTime":293.28,"endTime":297.27,"body":"rescue that he's afraid, he's"},{"startTime":293.28,"endTime":297.27,"body":"not a bad dog. He's just scared"},{"startTime":297.3,"endTime":298.92,"body":"but I also knew the risks."},{"startTime":300.0,"endTime":304.86,"body":"Reese has already bitten my ex's"},{"startTime":300.0,"endTime":304.86,"body":"dog, I knew that if he was put"},{"startTime":304.86,"endTime":308.28,"body":"into that situation, he could"},{"startTime":304.86,"endTime":308.28,"body":"bite. So I was very careful"},{"startTime":308.28,"endTime":311.28,"body":"about where I took Reese, of"},{"startTime":308.28,"endTime":311.28,"body":"course, not going to off leash"},{"startTime":311.28,"endTime":315.12,"body":"areas, avoiding any place that a"},{"startTime":311.28,"endTime":315.12,"body":"dog might come off leash, but"},{"startTime":315.12,"endTime":318.93,"body":"that limited so many of our"},{"startTime":315.12,"endTime":318.93,"body":"walks. We couldn't go to the on"},{"startTime":318.93,"endTime":322.62,"body":"leash trails, because so many of"},{"startTime":318.93,"endTime":322.62,"body":"them you will still find off"},{"startTime":322.62,"endTime":328.35,"body":"leash dogs. And out of both fear"},{"startTime":322.62,"endTime":328.35,"body":"and frustration I started being"},{"startTime":328.35,"endTime":331.65,"body":"very reactive. Like many of us,"},{"startTime":328.35,"endTime":331.65,"body":"when you're walking your"},{"startTime":331.65,"endTime":336.18,"body":"reactive dog, or just training"},{"startTime":331.65,"endTime":336.18,"body":"your dog, and an off leash dog"},{"startTime":336.21,"endTime":340.35,"body":"comes towards you, you are"},{"startTime":336.21,"endTime":340.35,"body":"likely yelling at them to get"},{"startTime":340.35,"endTime":344.49,"body":"their dog on a leash. And there"},{"startTime":340.35,"endTime":344.49,"body":"is a right and a wrong way to do"},{"startTime":344.49,"endTime":349.26,"body":"it, I guess. The issue is the"},{"startTime":344.49,"endTime":349.26,"body":"\"right way\" is not very"},{"startTime":349.26,"endTime":353.22,"body":"effective. You can sit there"},{"startTime":349.26,"endTime":353.22,"body":"with your dog and politely say,"},{"startTime":353.52,"endTime":355.29,"body":"\"it would be really great if you"},{"startTime":353.52,"endTime":355.29,"body":"could leash your dog, my dog is"},{"startTime":355.29,"endTime":359.04,"body":"not comfortable\". But even when"},{"startTime":355.29,"endTime":359.04,"body":"you're screaming at them out of"},{"startTime":359.04,"endTime":363.75,"body":"fear to leash their dog, you're"},{"startTime":359.04,"endTime":363.75,"body":"not often met with \"oh my"},{"startTime":363.75,"endTime":366.9,"body":"goodness, I'm so sorry. Please"},{"startTime":363.75,"endTime":366.9,"body":"let me do that for you\". You are"},{"startTime":366.9,"endTime":370.44,"body":"sometimes. But far too often,"},{"startTime":366.9,"endTime":370.44,"body":"you're met with \"my dogs"},{"startTime":370.44,"endTime":374.22,"body":"friendly, don't worry about it\"."},{"startTime":370.44,"endTime":374.22,"body":"Or people even getting upset"},{"startTime":374.22,"endTime":377.91,"body":"with us that our dogs should not"},{"startTime":374.22,"endTime":377.91,"body":"be there if they're not"},{"startTime":377.91,"endTime":380.61,"body":"friendly. In an off leash trail"},{"startTime":377.91,"endTime":380.61,"body":"where we previously had control"},{"startTime":379.26,"endTime":382.62,"body":"The other issue is, sometimes"},{"startTime":379.26,"endTime":382.62,"body":"it's hard to sit there with your"},{"startTime":380.61,"endTime":381.21,"body":"of our dogs."},{"startTime":382.62,"endTime":386.46,"body":"dog quietly because your dog is"},{"startTime":382.62,"endTime":386.46,"body":"already reacting. And now"},{"startTime":386.52,"endTime":390.3,"body":"there's so much going on, it's"},{"startTime":386.52,"endTime":390.3,"body":"hard to calmly ask somebody to"},{"startTime":390.3,"endTime":393.78,"body":"leash their off leash dog, when"},{"startTime":390.3,"endTime":393.78,"body":"you have every scenario running"},{"startTime":393.78,"endTime":396.0,"body":"through your head of how this"},{"startTime":393.78,"endTime":396.0,"body":"could go wrong. So that was"},{"startTime":396.0,"endTime":399.87,"body":"definitely me. Even if I was"},{"startTime":396.0,"endTime":399.87,"body":"walking Reese on leash, and"},{"startTime":399.9,"endTime":402.66,"body":"there were on leash dogs that I"},{"startTime":399.9,"endTime":402.66,"body":"could tell that they did not"},{"startTime":402.66,"endTime":406.77,"body":"have control over, they were on"},{"startTime":402.66,"endTime":406.77,"body":"a flexi lead and clearly we're"},{"startTime":406.77,"endTime":410.46,"body":"about to enter my space, I would"},{"startTime":406.77,"endTime":410.46,"body":"again be very reactive and"},{"startTime":410.46,"endTime":414.09,"body":"telling them absolutely not, do"},{"startTime":410.46,"endTime":414.09,"body":"not come near me, do not come"},{"startTime":414.09,"endTime":414.87,"body":"near my dog."},{"startTime":415.08,"endTime":417.99,"body":"There's actually another"},{"startTime":415.08,"endTime":417.99,"body":"scenario that I was dog sitting,"},{"startTime":418.02,"endTime":422.28,"body":"he was an absolutely beautiful"},{"startTime":418.02,"endTime":422.28,"body":"bully breed. His name was Tiggs;"},{"startTime":422.31,"endTime":425.01,"body":"I adored this dog and I took him"},{"startTime":422.31,"endTime":425.01,"body":"to the Bedford waterfront which"},{"startTime":425.01,"endTime":428.73,"body":"is an on leash area, and we are"},{"startTime":425.01,"endTime":428.73,"body":"walking him and this is one of"},{"startTime":428.73,"endTime":433.38,"body":"the most well behaved dogs I've"},{"startTime":428.73,"endTime":433.38,"body":"ever met. As we're getting"},{"startTime":433.38,"endTime":437.19,"body":"around to the condos. Somebody"},{"startTime":433.38,"endTime":437.19,"body":"gets out of their car and their"},{"startTime":437.22,"endTime":442.17,"body":"small little Maltese dog books"},{"startTime":437.22,"endTime":442.17,"body":"it towards us, I put Tiggs into"},{"startTime":442.17,"endTime":444.36,"body":"a sit. This dog is barreling"},{"startTime":442.17,"endTime":444.36,"body":"towards us and all of a sudden"},{"startTime":444.36,"endTime":451.2,"body":"the other owner is screaming at"},{"startTime":444.36,"endTime":451.2,"body":"me to get my dog away from her"},{"startTime":451.2,"endTime":455.61,"body":"dog. First off, I can't, if I"},{"startTime":451.2,"endTime":455.61,"body":"move in any direction, their dog"},{"startTime":455.61,"endTime":459.48,"body":"was following. Their little dog"},{"startTime":455.61,"endTime":459.48,"body":"was circling us. And I was"},{"startTime":459.48,"endTime":461.94,"body":"getting a little nervous. Though"},{"startTime":459.48,"endTime":461.94,"body":"this dog was really well"},{"startTime":461.94,"endTime":464.25,"body":"behaved. I didn't actually know"},{"startTime":461.94,"endTime":464.25,"body":"how it might do with an"},{"startTime":464.25,"endTime":467.7,"body":"encounter. So I was trying to"},{"startTime":464.25,"endTime":467.7,"body":"put space between the dogs, use"},{"startTime":467.7,"endTime":471.9,"body":"myself as a barrier. Tiggs was"},{"startTime":467.7,"endTime":471.9,"body":"an angel, he was an absolute"},{"startTime":471.9,"endTime":475.92,"body":"dream, and she is still"},{"startTime":471.9,"endTime":475.92,"body":"screaming, mind you not making"},{"startTime":475.92,"endTime":479.52,"body":"any effort to retrieve her dog"},{"startTime":475.92,"endTime":479.52,"body":"but just screaming at us to get"},{"startTime":479.7,"endTime":485.07,"body":"that dog away from her dog. The"},{"startTime":479.7,"endTime":485.07,"body":"way that she used 'that dog'."},{"startTime":485.61,"endTime":490.11,"body":"Now that set me off. I was there"},{"startTime":485.61,"endTime":490.11,"body":"with my sister and her and I who"},{"startTime":490.11,"endTime":494.67,"body":"were previously just like, you"},{"startTime":490.11,"endTime":494.67,"body":"know, get your dog lady. When"},{"startTime":494.67,"endTime":499.83,"body":"she said \"get that dog away from"},{"startTime":494.67,"endTime":499.83,"body":"my dog\". Oh, we went off. Our"},{"startTime":499.83,"endTime":502.62,"body":"dog is sitting here. Our dog is"},{"startTime":499.83,"endTime":502.62,"body":"doing perfectly fine. Get your"},{"startTime":502.62,"endTime":505.29,"body":"dog away. This is an on-leash"},{"startTime":502.62,"endTime":505.29,"body":"area, we have every right to be"},{"startTime":505.29,"endTime":508.68,"body":"here. Control your dog. Her"},{"startTime":505.29,"endTime":508.68,"body":"husband comes around and starts"},{"startTime":508.68,"endTime":511.98,"body":"saying like \"I'm so sorry, her"},{"startTime":508.68,"endTime":511.98,"body":"dog has been attacked. She's"},{"startTime":511.98,"endTime":515.73,"body":"nervous\". Well, if your dog has"},{"startTime":511.98,"endTime":515.73,"body":"previously been attacked, maybe"},{"startTime":515.73,"endTime":519.36,"body":"don't let it run up to other"},{"startTime":515.73,"endTime":519.36,"body":"dogs. But also don't you dare"},{"startTime":519.36,"endTime":522.9,"body":"for a second look at my dog and"},{"startTime":519.36,"endTime":522.9,"body":"then start freaking out. My dog"},{"startTime":522.9,"endTime":526.47,"body":"who is sitting there perfectly"},{"startTime":522.9,"endTime":526.47,"body":"fine, and then start screaming"},{"startTime":526.47,"endTime":529.8,"body":"at me to control my dog. That"},{"startTime":526.47,"endTime":529.8,"body":"was a very confusing situation."},{"startTime":530.1,"endTime":533.19,"body":"We got through it. Everything"},{"startTime":530.1,"endTime":533.19,"body":"was totally fine. Tiggs in that"},{"startTime":533.19,"endTime":536.52,"body":"situation was not the reactive"},{"startTime":533.19,"endTime":536.52,"body":"dog. He was an absolute dream."},{"startTime":536.55,"endTime":541.17,"body":"But that was probably my first"},{"startTime":536.55,"endTime":541.17,"body":"time yelling at another dog"},{"startTime":541.17,"endTime":545.76,"body":"owner. I also mentioned this in"},{"startTime":541.17,"endTime":545.76,"body":"the Letter to the Friendly Dog"},{"startTime":545.76,"endTime":550.02,"body":"Owner, when I was walking Reese"},{"startTime":545.76,"endTime":550.02,"body":"in the same spot, which is"},{"startTime":550.02,"endTime":552.75,"body":"actually a wonderful area to"},{"startTime":550.02,"endTime":552.75,"body":"take your dogs when training. I"},{"startTime":552.75,"endTime":555.48,"body":"know many people in the area do"},{"startTime":552.75,"endTime":555.48,"body":"go there because it's an on"},{"startTime":555.48,"endTime":558.57,"body":"leash area.
