The late great Michael Hutchins out front of Any Costus, Mystify off the album Kick, a song, Mystify, that featured in season two of Euphoria. Are you a fan of Euphoria? Did you see season one and season two? Did you participate in the feedback, the dialogue about those two seasons? And the memories still remain because years later we have season three already. At the time of recording this that hasn't even played. A few of the critics have seen certain episodes, such as myself. Although I wouldn't call myself a critic of Euphoria, you just watch and go with a flow, never knowing what to expect. It is a series which I began watching, but not by choice. I was asked to. I was asked to review it. And I'm really glad I did. And then I re-watched it ahead of season three. And I got a chance to speak to a couple of the new cast members joining season three. And I hope you enjoy my conversation with them. But first, my name is Shane A. Bassett, your host, a movie analyst. You can find me at movie underscore analyst across socials and YouTube channel where you can see the video version of the conversation you're about to hear with the boys on my YouTube channel, Shane Adam Bassett, Movie Analyst. And here is a little taste of the trailer from Euphoria Season 3.
SPEAKER_04In the beginning, we had to make a choice about who we were and what we wanted. The network loved her storyline. Really? But what we didn't realize was how far we were willing to go.
SPEAKER_01Wow, well, I don't want to play too much because the trailer is a little bit indifferent, and you need to see it rather than listen to it, even though you're currently listening to a podcast. So the conversation I had was with Marshawn Lynch, uh, the actor who appeared in a very funny movie called Bottoms, is also in Any Meanie alongside Samara Weaving, my fellow Australian. And Samara comes up in the conversation that I had with the boys. Also, Marshall was in Love Hertz to pick up a lot of stuff. And Westworld, which uh, you know, was one of my favorite television shows before it abruptly finished. Anyway, alongside Marsh Horn was Daryl Britt Gibson, who's been in a heap of stuff, including three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri, which has Samara Weaving in it. Again, hence Samara's conversation uh bringer and topic in the conversation you're about to hear. Uh he was also in The Unicorn, uh, an underrated film that not many people have seen that I thought was pretty good. Uh Just Mercy, which was an incredible movie, uh deep down, really good acting in that one. Just Mercy, Fear Street, a Netflix movie. Well, a Netflix series kind of. He turned up in a couple of those movies. And Barry, the television show. But anyway, Daryl Britt Gibson also is part of the new Euphoria series and part of the ensemble, which is like Zendaya. Jacob Alordy, another excellent Australian actor, and Sidney Sweeney, Maud Apertow. The list goes on. Hunter Schaefer, Alana Uback, Paula Marshall, the late Eric Dane, Alexa Demy, Barbie Ferreira, Colman Domingo, and the late Angus Cloud. His role is unfortunately not with us anymore. Fez was someone I was looking forward to in season three. And I think Sam Levinson, the uh the creator of Euphoria, was also. However, uh well, without much further ado, enjoy my spoiler-free conversation with Marshawn Lynch and Daryl Britt Gibson discussing Euphoria season three. Hey, Marshawn and Daryl, thank you so much for your time. I'm well. Have you ever been to Australia?
SPEAKER_02Uh uh many times. Yes, sir. Many, many times. I love Australia. Are you in Sydney?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm in Sydney.
SPEAKER_02So I love Sydney.
SPEAKER_01It's nearly 5 a.m., so I got up especially for this.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you're a trooper. A straight trooper. Yeah, we appreciate you being here with us.
SPEAKER_01Well, I'm stoked to talk to you both. Uh, you're basically new kids on the block with uh this show. Uh joining an established series like this. Did you have to audition? Did the producers reach out to you? How did it all happen?
SPEAKER_02Uh I auditioned, you know what I'm saying? I I um I um there was uh it was an audition that when it came to me, I had I haven't watched Euphoria, but I know Euphoria. And I was thinking to myself, like, how do I fit in Euphoria? Like, am I gonna be like a guidance counselor or janitor in high school? Um, but then I had you know found out that there was a time jump. Um and then I had read for something and then got to meet with Sam. Uh, and then sort of from there, we just started to really create and craft uh this this this character.
SPEAKER_01Cool. Um do you have do either of you have memories of walking onto set for the first time? I mean, it would have been bringing your A game straight away.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, hell yeah. Um I remember walking on set and I'm like, god damn, this probably the uh uh the biggest set that I've actually walked on. And knowing that it was a a show, I'm like, this it felt like it was a movie, like a feature film uh movie set. And it was like uh every day that we shot, uh, it was like that. And I mean, you know, considering this it's a show, but uh just uh for me, like knowing how many professionals I was actually in the space working with, like these are what do you call actors with all like test pins? What yeah, whatever the he got hella big words to put you on with you you you won that because but I was just you know my bad, but I was just like this uh you know, like an athlete and shit, stepping into a new arena, and I'm like, well, I I don't I want to make sure that I'm not the dude that they you know hold holding up the uh holding up the process. So I mean, you feel me though, it it it made me put my uh put my best foot forward and ready to step on shit. So you know, I mean that's that's what that first day on uh on set felt like for me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I've seen the first three episodes and they're pretty intense. Uh like everyone seems to have issues on this show. How do you get into character and then maybe back out again, you know, so you don't bring it home?
SPEAKER_00Well my uh my dog do this thing where he uh where he tell me like just imagine uh imagine where you came five ten uh five or ten minutes before you actually uh before we get into uh into uh set. So it kind of gives me a place where I could go that I could bring to uh to my character, which made a lot of shit uh easier.
SPEAKER_01Hmm. Okay. Uh and why do you both think that euphoria has so much longevity? I mean it's a huge hit in Australia, but all around the world, and it's a everyone's anticipating this, you know, this season three. And why do you think it resonates to everybody around the world?
SPEAKER_02Because I think character matters, and that's um that's Sam's foundation with the world that he's created. Um, and I think that people attach themselves to whichever character that they fall in love with, and then you're sort of, you know, integrated into the to the entirety of it. But like because character matters, it's a testament to that. You know, you you get involved or you you sort of um you you sort of are you tether yourself to a character that you love, you know? Um, and it's a cast of incredible actors, and and Sam writes these characters in such a way that you are so involved and so invested in them. And it's the investment of why this show is so big. The look is one thing, but it's the investment in the character that I think keeps people around.
SPEAKER_01Was it hard to remember lines and just get them right straight away because everything was so intense and the writing was so sharp?
SPEAKER_02No, I mean, I don't, I don't, I mean, I never lines are never a thing that are difficult for me because I overprepare myself before I get to set. So when I get to set, like I'm just having fun.
SPEAKER_00But shit, me, hell yeah. I ain't gonna hold you. I'm for sure. I'm I'm the dude like hey scripty, hey scripty, what's uh you feel me? But I think that's just more of a uh more of a uh of a safety net, but also uh what it does for me is it's you know it's psychological. Like I psych myself up to where you know, all right, if I need help, I'm for sure gonna be the one that's gonna ask for it. But you know, I mean, in most situations, before we get there, like I'll pull, you know, uh uh Bishop to the side and holler at him, especially if I if I got some shit going on in the in the script that you know need a little extra attention, and then I run it with him or I run it with uh uh you know somebody that uh that actually know the script, like the back of their hand, and she's gonna be so mad at me because I'm drawing a blank on her name. Um I'll figure it out. Oh Marlise. Marlise Marlise, it's not bad, Marlies, baby, because she was she was my life saver. You feel me? We all ways running lines and hella shit to make sure I'm on point.
SPEAKER_01Man, you did a great job from what I've seen, both of you. Uh I really liked you and the unicorn, Daryl. I think that's underrated.
SPEAKER_02Thank you, thank you.
SPEAKER_01And and uh you, Marshall, Any Meanie, you worked with an Australian Samara Weaving, so my fellow Australian.
SPEAKER_00I'm not familiar with three blue boys, yeah. Yeah, congratulations to that young lady. She got the pops.
SPEAKER_01Well, to wrap it up quickly, um, what do you think if they ever did a euphoria musical in you know, a musical episode? Do you think you'd be up for it?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'd be rapping my ass in it.
SPEAKER_01Maybe a musical and in black and white make it really arty.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that'd be amazing. Like a little Gene Kelly uh euphoria crossover. That'd be amazing. Tell Sam when you see him.
