As part of Mickey Rourke Talk series, I share my thoughts on Angel Heart (1987) an intense noir, still extremely controversial, impeccably filmed and one of my favourites, Johnny Favourite' one might say. Mickey in his prime era, brilliant here.
Directed by Alan Parker also starring Charlotte Rampling, Robert DeNiro, Kathleen Whilhoite, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Nicole Burdette as Ellie. Enjoy my ramblings and thought threads on this wild, devilish mystery.

Uh way too much saxophone for me, but uh still suits the movie. That is a bit of the main theme of Angel Heart as conducted by Trevor Jones. Hello, my name is Shane A. Bassett. I am your host for Cine Critique. And this is a Mickey Rock Talk Edition. Something I haven't done for a while, but I've been meaning to catch up on a few Mickey Rock movies that I may or may not have done yet. I definitely haven't done Angel Heart. In Australia, it was rated R. In America, it got an X certificate. But it was reluctantly cut by the director Alan Parker to make it a lower classification and so more moviegoers could enjoy it. It was something that was mentioned on the Siskel and Eberts at the movies. It was their I guess their understanding with each other that they liked it, they both liked it, but also disagreed, as they often do on other aspects. But contentiously, they did like it. It's worth going to have a listen to what they had to say uh on YouTube about Angel Heart. Uh Mickey Rourke, of course, is in this with Robert Janmiro, among others. I will go on about the cast, the ins and outs of who they are a little bit later on at first. It was from a book, adapted from a book called Falling Angel. And I haven't read it. I wouldn't mind getting it and seeing how close it is. Alan Parker seemed to pay tribute to the book in the he did a pretty good commentary on one of the physical media editions. He also did some little interviews about certain aspects of various parts of the movie and the behind-the-scenes stories. Again, as an extra on one of the physical media editions that has been released over the years. I have a big clamshell VHS copy of it. I also have a couple of versions of the DVD that both are R-rated, so uncut. And one is from the US and one is from Australia. And I also have a pretty good Blu-ray copy of it. As far as I know, it's not in 4K. It might be. I know it's been at least in 4K for a few screenings on uh in Cinemas, but I don't know if it's available for 4K. I will have to check that. However, my Blu-ray is pristine, and that is a remastered classic, I gotta say. Not that 87 was that long ago, but when you think about it, I suppose it is. Mickey Rourke, during this time, was on fire. Oh yeah. And again, we'll talk a little bit more in depth on his career, where it was before, during, and after this movie. Uh Angel Heart is a detective story. He is a private detective, Harry Angel. It's set in 1955, New York. And it is a wild story. It has voodoo, it has chickens, it has jazz, it has a trip to the beach, which I'll definitely tell you about because it concerns a nose shield, which I've never ever worn before. Uh churches and bars are also featured, and other awkward, unusual situations, I've got to say. He's constantly running around but kind of going nowhere. But his friendship with Epiphany is critical to this story as played by Lisa Bonnet. One of a few controversial things about this movie is that relationship and where she came from, straight out of the TV's The Cosby show. In hindsight, we know exactly what a monster Bill Cosby was now. But then he was America's favorite dad, basically, and Lisa Bonet played one of his children in the show in the G-rated comedy series, which I never watched, so I can't tell you too much about it other than seeing a few clips over many years, but not being interested in sitcoms doesn't help. My view on that show. Uh before I go any further, you can find me at movie underscore analyst. That's right. At movie underscore analyst or just Google Shane Adam Bassett, and you'll find my social media platforms and YouTube channel and so forth. But right now this is basically my podcast, Cine Critique, and uh I don't do enough movie reviews, but uh here we are doing one for Mickey Rock Talk. So let's talk, Mickey Rock. And by the way, I've just found out that Angel Heart has been released in physical media on 4K, just not in Australia. Enjoy your copy of it if you own one. I'll have to get one.
SPEAKER_03The Exorcist, the possession of the human soul. Chinatown, the mystery of the human mind.
SPEAKER_06Now you know what today today is today's Wednesday. I'm just thinking I was page.
SPEAKER_03Every angel has been hired to solve more than a mystery. And if it is to me.
SPEAKER_06Oh I know Johnny wanna know how I'm pumping off and wanna use the more and more tomatoes on the line.
SPEAKER_03He doesn't find it. Angel Heart.
SPEAKER_00So the movie has like that underlying heartbeat through a lot of it, just like you heard in the trailer there. Uh, and he falls apart. I mean, this is a detective that's been asked by this mysterious benefactor to find this guy who is potentially dead, or is he? Uh, and it's he goes around in circles and it's a noir, but it's also a intriguing. Is this real? You ask yourself that question. Could Mickey have played any other role? Because he's pretty good in this, and again, I'm gonna get to the whole cast shortly, all the highlights in the cast shortly. But could he play any role other role? And I'm not sure he could play Louis Cipher, the Robert De Niro De Niro carrier um cameo. De Niro Cameo is what I was going to say. Uh he's good, and I think he could do it, but I I don't want to see anyone else other than Robert De Niro in this role, that's for sure. There's also a small role of a lawyer, uh Louis Cypher's lawyer near the start. Maybe he would have been good in that role, but I would have hoped that if he was playing that lawyer role, it would have been extended because it's not a huge, huge one. He's not in it a lot at the lawyer. And there's a guy at the racetrack concerning gumbo and a really good scene, actually. There's not a lot of dialogue, but it's a really good, heavy dialogue between uh Harry Angel and this guy at a racetrack. And then in the in this room, while a big pot of gumbo is cooking, and I've never tasted gumbo. I'd give it a I'd give it a chance. Who knows what's in it? I think it's a bit of a mixture of everything. Do you know what it is and want to tell me all about it and tell me it's beautiful? Uh feel free to message me. I would love to know. Because I like food. Uh it's directed by Alan Parker, the late Alan Parker. The commitments. Mississippi Burning. Now there's two movies that are like nine out of ten. I like the commitments, always have. Uh Evita. He directed Madonna in Avita. Meryl Street was going to play Evita. Madonna ended up playing Evita and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for it. Midnight Express was another Alan Parker movie. Wow. If you haven't seen Midnight Express, it's heavy duty, but it is amazing. Great film. In 1982, he had a movie called King Floyd, The Wall, which was released, and uh I don't know whether it was a hit or not, but I've seen it several times, and I'm a big fan of the soundtrack. Uh the movie is very obscure. It has Bob Geldoff in it. And that's Sir Bob Geldoff, by the way. And it also had Bob Hoskins, who I've always loved. If you haven't seen Bob Hoskins in, or you've seen him in Mermaids, of course, you've seen him in Who Frame Roger Rabbit. But if you haven't seen him in Mona Lisa with Michael Kane, get on it. Great film. But Jenny Wright is also in Pink Floyd the Wall. Yeah. One of my all-time favorites, actually, from the 80s and the 90s. San O'Sfire, of course, is probably where I first spotted her. But she's in Near Dark. And that's horror classic royalty. Near Dark. Loved it. I Madman 2 was pretty good. She was in that. She was in one of the Young Guns movies. I think it was a second one. I really like Jenny Wright. She's amazing. And pops up in Wapping Floyd the Wall. He did Birdie, uh, which I as yet I've never seen Matthew Modine and Nicolas Cage at the time of recording this. I've never seen Birdie. Uh I'd like to, though. Uh, I believe there was talk of remaking it, so maybe I really should see the original. And I like Nicolas Cage. I'm not quite the completist, but I think I've seen practically 95% of everything he's done. So Birdie is a bit of a hole in that repertoire I need to see and catch up on. If I've seen The Surfer, which I have with Nicolas Cage and hated it, uh, I really should watch Birdie because I believe people are sit on the fence for that one too. Either love it or hate it. Uh, and finally, well, not finally, because Alan did make other movies, but Come See the Paradise is one I'd like to bring to your attention, and it is the most furthest thing away from Angel Heart as you'd ever get. But that was the thing. I've just rattled off a whole heap of movies there that are completely different in so many ways. And Come See the Paradise was a flop, uh, it has a good cast, and in particular, an awesome rousing soundtrack. This theme music is incredible. Here's a taste of Come See the Paradise music by Randy Edelman. Ah, yes, come see the paradise love theme. The movie was directed by Alan Parker, as was Angel Heart. Now, Mickey Rock, he pops up at the beginning of the movie in in around the two minute, 40 second mark is when we see him. He's blowing bubbles from bubblegum. He's chewing on bubblegum and he's smoking at the same time, which I think is kind of disgusting, but uh he manages manages to make it look not too bad. I couldn't do it. Uh he is a bit dishevelled, he's in a trench coat, he's got a white shirt on, uh, and look, he throughout the movie, I always like noting what he's wearing. A lot of different kind of suits and dishevelled, I guess, looks, and because he's hot a lot in it, and I mean hot as in he's in New Orleans and sweaty and dirty, and he's also getting madder and madder and madder, or getting more distressed and distressed and distressed uh as the movie goes on. He wears like this gold tie with a maroon shirt, or it's actually a maroon and gold tie, I think, with the maroon style shirt, or you could call it a tanned suit, uh a lot of baggy suits, actually, and beige dark colours. Uh he wears this hanky around his neck, like this piece of material around his neck, which is like a hanky which old people used to blow their noses on. Maybe people still do, I don't know. He wears a singlet, which is always dirty, it seems to be always dirty. Uh, and you know, he's got a beard, some long stubble at times. Uh he's got like this striped jacket on with a mauve shirt. Mauve is like a purpley colour, I guess, but not quite purple. Uh he has his top button done up as well. Uh in one sort of particular extended scene, which uh been hot for that, I would have thought. Uh in the credits at the end it says the suits are from Rome and the cane is from Paris. I would say the cane here is obviously Robert De Niro's, and you'll see that he's got quite an obvious cane uh that's uh imported or special, whatever you want to call it. Uh and I'm not surprised that the the suits are from Rome or wherever they're from, whoever made them, they look pretty sharp, I've got to say. Uh Alan De Parker calls these two we're talking uh Mickey and Robert, he calls them quintessential American actors, and I think that's kind of obvious. He says that in one of the commentaries. Uh he also said that Mickey prefers to work with non-actors, though I don't know about that, with Robert De Niro and I mean Lucia Bonet and there's some other dis pretty distinguished actors in this movie, as I'll go through. Uh when we see Mickey, he's sort of is happy but he gets worse as the movie goes. He's looking for uh this guy called Johnny Favorite, and he's he's step by step he's being led into different directions. Nothing is straightforward in this uh search that he's that he's trying to conduct without much help. He doesn't get a lot of help, but he's getting pressure from his benefactor, which is of course uh Robert De Niro's character, Louis Cypher. Now, in 1987, um Mickey Raw had uh a pretty interesting selection of movies. Now he had Barfly, he had this, of course, Angel Heart, and Barfly and Prayer for the Dying. They're both excellent movies. Barfly I've gone into detail in another edition of Mickey Raw Talk. Check it out, I've yet to do Prayer for the Dying. Uh now before this, the year before this in 1996, there was Nine and a Half Weeks, which was equally, if not I don't know if it was more controversial than this movie, because this movie concerns uh gore and blood and uh voodoo rituals and so forth. So nine and a half weeks was a lot of uh domestic textile violence and manipulation. So yeah, uh let's let's say equally controversial. Also from a book that Nine and a Half Weeks was. Good soundtrack on Nine and a Half Weeks, which you can listen to some samples from in my uh description of the movie in another edition of Mickey Rock Talk. Now Homeboy uh was 1988, the year after this, and it was a bit of a passion project, and I would say that he was uh you know encouraged to do this because of the success of the previous uh movies, and he was absolutely on fire. But can you imagine Mickey's life then going through these three hardcore characters he did in '87? Well, Harry Angel's one thing, but then you've got the the character in Farfly, who's the amazing writer, but also an absolute deaf-defying gravity and life, alcoholic. And then Prayer for the Dying, an Irish movie about an IR IRA dude who's backing out of certain things he's supposed to do, and then he starts getting hunted and falls in love and so forth. Prayer for the dying is a good film. Liam Neeson's in that, and Bob Hoskins, who we mentioned earlier. Uh, but yeah, Homeboy was the year after this, and I mean it was a boxing movie, he wrote it, uh, Christopher Walkins in it, and it's a pretty good film. But juggling all these different characters, this is how good people forget how uh amazing Mickey Rawke was when it came to his acting ability. That is for sure. Uh Robert De Niro is an equal icon and still going strong. I have no idea about what people think or say about him personally or beliefs and political side of stuff. I'm talking about his movies and you think of everything that he's done, and I would only scratch the surface by uh rattling and off and saying a few of my favourites, which would be American Hustle. Absolutely love American Hustle, Taxi Driver, of course. The family. The family from 2013, if you haven't seen that, is incredible. Uh Limitless is good too. Uh people forget about that movie that has Abby Cornish in it, Australian actress. So Aussie connection there, and Bradley Cooper, among others. Great film, Limitless. But The Family Hysterical. Such a dark black comedy uh directed by Luke Besson, also has Michelle Pfeiffer in it. And What Just Happened is a good behind-the-scenes sort of take on Hollywood uh satire, kind of like Wag the Dog, which he was in, which was a behind-the-scenes satire, a dark comedy on politics, or what just happened, something similar along those lines of Wag the Dog, but what just happened is the tragedy and misfortune and the corruption in Hollywood. And then there's the intern. I I won't go on anymore, but the intern's probably when I want to mention a romantic movie, like a kind movie. He's funny, he's a really funny guy, and not just meet the fuckers and meet the parents. He's funny. Think of Midnight Run. I mean, but the intern with uh Ann Hathaway is great. Uh must watch. I I think it's great, it holds up. Okay, Charlotte Rampling is in this. too she plays this kind of uh she's a fortune teller and she's a someone who will calm you and talk to you and read your tea leaves palm I don't know she tells fortune fortunes uh love Charlotte Rambling so I don't want to give too much away about her character because she's not in it much a lot of characters aren't in Angel Heart a lot they're part of Harry's investigation but some are unfortunately not in it along and I'm not gonna say why but Charlotte Rampling amazing I'd say she's up there as an icon of the s of the screen such as Robert De Niro is although maybe some of these movies aren't classics she's good in them including Zadoz from 1974 the much blasted movie starring Sean Connery uh the Night Porter was the same year though which is still an acclaimed controversial movie she has actually been in a lot of controversial movies even Basic Instinct 2 that's controversial because it is a uh sequel that probably should never have been made she was in Red Sparrow which I really quite liked I think that's an underrated film uh about Russian spies starring Jennifer Lawrence and Australian Joel Edgerton of course and I mean what else has Charlotte Rampling been in another Australian connection is Eye of the Storm with Jiddy Davis and Jeffrey Rush from 2011 an Australian maid film and Hard Day's Night was her debut. Now I've never seen it I don't really like the Beatles I know it's very uh I get uh I guess it's a it's a personal thing I just don't like the Beatles music very much but people think they're amazing and great but her debut is the point I'm trying to make was in the Beatles movie Hard Days at Night. That's a pretty cool debut to have on your resume. Swimming pool is another movie that she did I want to recommend uh if you haven't seen it terrific French film. What else can I discuss about some of the cast members in this and I'll get to Lisa Bonnet in just a few moments but I want to mention Kathleen Wilhoyt first. Now Kathleen Wilhoit you might know her from Roadhouse she becomes mates with Dalton. She works at the bar and she's so adorable and loves him. Uh Twin Peaks she was in that and bad influence if you remember that movie with Rob Lowe and James Spader. She was in the colour of night and the morning after both incredible films but both for different reasons but they're really good thrillers The colour of night Bruce Willis and then the morning after was Jeff Bridges and Jane Fonda she was in Quicksand uh this movie with Michael Caine and Michael Keaton. This is Kathleen Wilhoyt who also sings by the way uh and finally it's worth checking out Undercover from 1987 with John Stockwell and her among others uh another sort of late 80s movie that seems to go under the radar a bit but such as Kathleen Wilhoyt's career has. People always go back to Murphy's Law and I re-watched Murphy's Law recently and she's great. Charles Bronson is good. It's a movie where she gets sort of hooked up with um as a sort of pseudo partner to the gruff detective played by Charles Bronson and he can't stand it because she's such this little punk and with a foul mouth but uh they end up helping each other out and people like Murphy's Laura and I don't dislike it. It's just not as good on a rewatch uh recently but Kathleen Wilhoid and Charles Bronson are amazing, brilliant and pretty funny together mostly and annoying also. Uh Lisa Bonet High Fidelity of course I've never seen the never seen the Cosby show as I mentioned earlier so I can't talk about that. A couple of the ep a couple of the episodes of Girls which was that series with Lena Dunham I I got I got through and saw all that as it played out as it was released originally and I still quite like girls. I think it was pretty good. Uh she had a few episodes in that that she popped up in and she's in this Parker Posey movie called Dead Connection. If you want to go back to some previous uh episodes of Cine Critique I do a Parker Posey special and I mentioned Dead Connection. There's a pretty amazing scene with someone called Ellie that Mickey Rourke meets in a bar. That's kind of like an informant you know when they meet that they've been together before and they also have this fondness towards each other and it's great because this actress that plays Ellie oh perfect absolutely perfect and I knew I'd seen her before so I did some research and I rewatched a few of the movies that I remembered her in. Nicole Burdett is her name. Now you'll know who Ellie is immediately when you see him sitting in the bar and she's there and oh she gives him information uh and she works at I think it was the New York Times uh she works in a publication and because she's uh basically worried about a job but then they go off and uh have some great time together in a scene where they just keep talking to each other but start just robing as if you know like I said this has just come naturally to them and it's like a routine. Uh he even takes off the bra with one hand and it's just so fluent and amazing great scene but Nicole Burdett if you don't know already check her out in Nuts the same year as this was released in 87 just think of this Nuts with Barbara Streisand and Richard Dreyfus and then in the same year you've got this a remarkable outstanding like beaming scene five six seven minute scene with Mickey in Angel Heart as well as being in nuts crazy and then a couple of years later she was in Bloodhounds of Broadway uh in 1989 that was and that's like that was in the 1920s that film was set. So even she her look is perfect for this movie Angel Heart in 1955 where it was set but then you go back to the 20s uh she looks incredible and just as suited I don't know why Nicole Burdett wasn't a massive massive star uh I knew her uh when it came to some other movies that she was in but Bloodhounds of Broadway if you haven't seen it it was a massive flop at the time but it's got Madonna Jennifer Gray Matt Dylan Rutka Hower's in it Stephen McHaddy Steve Bashimi is in it uh fantastic and of course Rutke Hauer he was in Sin City with Mickey Rourke and Steve Bashimi was the director and he was in Animal Factory that Mickey was in so you know long long uh association if you look at all that and Nicole Badette was also in can you believe it? Oh yeah the melancholy but fabulous and cinematic a river runs through it it is often those we live with and love the ones we care about the most who elude us even now when I look back on the Montana of my youth I long to understand what happened there. Everything's whenever it was a world wonder possibility Alrighty that is uh a little bit of the trailer of A River Runs Through It which uh as mentioned stars Nicole Nicole Burdett uh and yeah great movie directed by Robert Redford and finally if I haven't gone on about Nicole Burdett enough Search and Destroy was another movie she popped up in it has a Martin Scorsese cameo and link to Angel Heart that De Niro of course has been in several Martin Scorsese movies but his tribute to Scorsese was the beard and the and the look that he has in Angelheart was which was very Scorsese of the time of the era in Search and Destroy not only Scorsese's cameo was quite impressive but Dennis Hopper is in it Griffin Dunn, Rosanna Arquette Ethan Hawke and Ileana Douglas is in Search and Destroy I think it is pretty much free to watch online. So check it out if you're interested in an obscure 90s movie and Dennis Hopper's in it so of course you're gonna be interested I think anyway. Alrighty and no more talk about Nicole because unless I mention how she is undressed with one hand with the bra and the stockings Mickey does a fabulous job in that moment in the film while getting information out of her as well. Those clips would not have been easy and there was no CGI. I've never tried gumbo uh and you know that's a really good scene as I mentioned earlier it's probably not one take but the race track or the race itself when there's a horse race on with two horses only and there's people lined up along the fence watching it and you can see the horses from the distance and Mickey's talking to this gentleman about the case and the horses just keep on running closer and closer and closer as till they run past and it's just all done I think as one scene I think I love I loved it absolutely loved it. It's not a tracking shot it's more or less just a still camera but a beautiful moment. There's lots of beautiful moments in this movie. The imagery the fans and the light and the smoke haze um really prominent throughout there's lots of whispering uh and lots of little clicks and sounds that if you have a really good sound system you're gonna pick up on uh especially in my Blu-ray and hopefully the 4K which I'll get eventually but Trevor Jones's music isn't bad but a little bit too much saxophone right I get it. I get it. I'm not a saxophone guy but it suited this noir story. There's New Orleans band music as you would imagine because and there's Catholic music and hymns and things in this movie as well. It covers everything. There's a lot going on I've got to tell you heartbeats and the intricate editing not just of the movie but the sound or clicks are making this movie absolutely brilliant I've got to say uh it's not for the fainthearted and when all is revealed Mickey's acting is so it's delicate but his voice changes with the emotion. He's right into this character he's giving it everything uh as well as this interaction that he has with Kathleen Wilhoyt. Now we talked about her before she's only in one scene she's like this uh assistant in a hospital or a a battery maybe it's an institution I don't know but Harry needs some information out of a previous patient. Kathleen Wilhoit's there a bit sketchy at first will I help him will I not but she does and she's flooding flooding her sensations into everything she's giving this actor Mickey in front of her. She's giving it all just as much as he is uh a really good moment great interaction proving I'm not wrong when I say Kathleen Wilhoyt is an incredible superior actor that a lot of people may not know. There's controversy glore in this and it's course mixed race relations uh at not quite the 90 minute mark although we've had some interactions between Harry and Epiphany the Lisa Bonet character uh a kind of really nice interaction in particular while they're walking uh and talking in some scenes but sure they get along they trust each other as actors you can tell and the romantic interlude does turn into some bloody imagery and madness and will tip people over the edge if you watch the uncut version that is for sure I have to say well I'll finish it up by saying some things of interest in Angel Heart. Pretty much the Voodoo dances which in one particular scene is way too long and if you if you feel like you're actually uh being a voyeur on it just a little bit like Harry is himself hiding in the bushes but the dances themselves were choreographed by Fame the choreographer of Fame yeah who was which was also directed by Alan Parker. Now it's a great moment if you know Mickey Raw movies and you've listened to previous Mickey Raw talk episodes that I've done you'll know that he smokes all the time. It's just a thing and it doesn't take long when you first see him he's always got one in his mouth right just like this movie the first you see him at with one smoking while he's chewing the bubblegum and blowing bubbles but in a probable first Charlotte Rambling's character she stops Mickey from smoking in a scene in her apartment uh you know he's gone there and been let in there under false pretenses looking for clues of course as we know uh and getting very little but uh it's gotta be a first someone stopped him from smoking because he he does what he's told and doesn't spark up although there is a scene in it where he sparks up on the shoe of a dead man yeah that's that's just typical uh warning for animal lovers the controversies abound yet again there's animals being skinned there's cock fighting there's chickens in peril a dog is kicked in an attack scene now it's a trained dog and then you can see also that the it's pretty obvious that it's a stunt man you know when they wear those uh things around their arm and the dog's biting their arm you know but it's under the jacket or under a shirt but it's kind of fatter than their actual arm so you can see that it's uh a stunt man from behind I I would hope and I would say that no animals were harmed hopefully during this movie but um just the imagery itself is quite apocritical if you're an animal lover be warned um there's quite a lot of questionable offensive behaviour in this none more so well a lot of it's been pretty full on but when he empties an ashtray onto the sidewalk onto the ground that's pretty bad I'm sure people still do that now if people still smoke in their cars who knows if they do that it would probably make a really good double feature with the Devil's Advocate have you seen the Devil's Advocate Al Pacino Charlie's Theron Keanu Reeves a young attorney has the chance of a lifetime waters we want you to come to New York all expenses first class travel and lodging you and your wife it will enter a place of wealth and ambition we've got 40 partners fested at the moment in addition to our corporate clients we're currently representing about 25 foreign countries we've got your schedule for 15 minutes so make the most of it away I say you take a little getting used to the battle control I want your dreams on your I see the future of this lock he knows your greatest fear and he knows the finest been a number between we will win it's my coming certainly like the devil's advocate and it's not quite uh a noir but hey the devil's involved as is well maybe a little bit different but the devil's it was as though this plan had been with him all his life pondering his 15th year crystallized with the pain of puberty oh can you believe it I'd better stop it Donnie Darko has interrupted the Angel Heart podcast but that's okay. Yeah The Devil's Advocate the Devils which was a 1971 movie that's actually finally being restored this year in the year of 2026. It's getting re-released later uh in late in 2026. Can't wait to watch the proper restored uncut version that was mysteriously not available for a long time until now Warner Brothers has decided to release it. Would you watch anything else with Angel Heart? It's an interesting movie on its own I think it's a classic and there is a scene at the beach where he goes to speak with this guy and he ends up telling her him to talk to his wife who's standing in the water uh she starts singing and tells him a little bit of information about the guy Johnny Favorite that he's looking for but Harry yeah wears a nose shield which is given to him by this guy he could be a mobst mobster he could be anyone at the at the beach there it's a really interesting character actually uh but I've never really seen them not in real life only seen them in a few movies and I've never worn a nose shield but of course especially in this era it suits Mickey Raw and before I wrap it up and give you my star rating of Angelheart a movie that I have watched at least 50 times over the years. There's been a few gaps in between but I do watch it regularly when I try and re uh sort of rotate my Mickey Raw interviewing schedule which I always do several every three months every four months and just rotate him from through and rewatch rewatch rewatch and he still is making movies so Mickey has modern movies too but uh you wouldn't recognize him especially if you did a comparison of then and now however Taylor Vince is an act, an actor I haven't brought up yet. He was in JFK. He's in he's in Angel Heart, of course. He plays a cop. That's why I'm talking about him now. He's in Come See the Paradise, which uh I played a little bit of music of and mentioned that that was directed by Alan Parker, the same director here. He was in Mississippi Burning as well. Another movie directed by Alan Parker, who's an amazing director. Seriously, go back and look at his repertoire. Beautiful Girls was a movie that Pruitt Taylor Vince was in too. And you know what? I really liked Nurse Betty. And Kathleen Wilhoyt was in Nurse Betty, so I left that little bit of information until now because Pruitt Taylor Vince and Kathleen Wilhoyt are in separate scenes and separate moments of Angel Heart, but they're also in Nurse Betty. Two good movies that were released in 1994, Nobody's Fool with Paul Newman and a very small role from Bruce Willis. Um great, really amazing uh moment from him and Bruce does he did a few movies where he just popped up and that was one of them. Unforgettable. And finally, uh he is Parkent in the Superman reboot from 2025. So uh not uh one that everyone really loved, but uh I remember when I was watching it and didn't know he was in it, and I'm going, there's Praour Taylor Vince. And finally, the Mickey Rourke link to Per Taylor Vince, besides Angel Heart, is Barfly. Honestly, Barfly is Academy Award worthy. Didn't happen for Faye Dunaway or Mickey Rourke. Go listen to my podcast about that film in the previous episode of Mickey Raw Talk, but Barfly, uh one of the obscure greats produced by Francis Ford Coppola and released by Canon. Canon Films, can you believe? The theme from Barfly. Had to throw that in there. So what did I think of Angel Heart? I'd like to know what you thought of Angel Heart. Uh find me on social media at movie underscore analyst. Love to know. Uh, and maybe even your thoughts on this podcast. Maybe it's too long, maybe I'm too boring, but uh, I do get carried away when I talk about things I like and movies I particularly like. I love Angel Heart. I think it's not a movie I can go around recommending to people. Hey, you should watch your Angel Heart, and then they put it on with their family or kids or you know, friends, and for a casual night viewing, and they have a few beers and some popcorn, and then this movie rolls out and turns everyone away. Not everyone's gonna be comfortable watching this movie, and it has things in it that are not kind and they haven't aged well, but it's a story set in the 50s for a start, made in the 80s, directed to perfection, awesome leads, great smaller characters, music, visuals, everything about this movie worked for me. I don't think there were many scenes cut, if any. I don't recall word for word the commentary and the special features on the various discs I have of this movie, but it is it is worth seeking out for your collection. Well, that's another edition of Mickey Rock Talk, Sydney Critique. My name is Shane A. Bassett. Until next time, I will see you at the movies.
