Welcome back, lovely listeners, to another episode of the Happya Life Podcast. I’m Clare Deacon, your host and guide on this journey to living a happier, more fulfilling life. Today, we’re diving into a topic that I’m deeply passionate about: breaking free from survival mode and learning how to thrive. If you’ve ever felt stuck, overwhelmed, or just plain exhausted, this episode is for you.

I’ll be sharing personal stories, actionable tips, and a whole lot of encouragement to help you transition from merely surviving to truly thriving. So, let’s get started!

Let’s begin by understanding what survival mode is. Survival mode is a state where your body and mind are constantly on high alert, just trying to get through each day. It’s like being stuck in a never-ending cycle of stress, where you’re always in fight-or-flight mode. This can manifest in various ways: constant anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, lack of motivation, and even physical symptoms like headaches or fatigue.

I remember a time in my life when I was deep in survival mode. After the unexpected death of my husband, I felt like I was just barely hanging on. Every day was a struggle, and I couldn’t see a way out. But through my journey, I learned that it is possible to break free and find a path to thriving.

It’s essential to understand that while survival mode is a natural response to trauma or prolonged stress, it doesn’t have to be a permanent state. The real possibility of growth after trauma is something I’m incredibly passionate about. Survival isn’t the best you can hope for. There is something beyond survival, and it’s called post-traumatic growth.

Post-traumatic growth is the positive change that can occur as a result of struggling with highly challenging life circumstances. It’s about not just bouncing back but growing beyond what you were before the trauma. It involves developing a new appreciation for life, improved relationships, new possibilities, personal strength, and spiritual change. This concept is a cornerstone of positive psychology and is something I explore deeply in my book, "Blooming Happya."

Survival mode can have significant long-term effects on our health and well-being. Mentally, it can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, and even depression. Physically, it can take a toll on our bodies, leading to issues like high blood pressure, digestive problems, and weakened immune function. It can also strain our relationships, making it difficult to connect with others and enjoy meaningful interactions.

Research shows that prolonged stress can alter brain function, affecting our memory and decision-making abilities. It’s like being in a constant state of emergency, which is neither healthy nor sustainable. But here’s the important part: understanding these impacts can be the first step towards making positive changes.

When I was in survival mode, I experienced many of these symptoms. I struggled with anxiety, had difficulty concentrating, and felt a pervasive sense of fatigue. It wasn’t until I began to recognise these signs and understand their origins that I could start to address them.

So, how do we break free from survival mode? It starts with a mindset shift. Our mindset plays a crucial role in how we perceive and react to challenges. There are two main types of mindsets: fixed and growth. A fixed mindset believes that abilities and situations are static and unchangeable. On the other hand, a growth mindset embraces change and sees challenges as opportunities for growth.

To cultivate a growth mindset, start by practicing self-reflection. Ask yourself, “What can I learn from this situation?” Instead of seeing obstacles as insurmountable barriers, view them as chances to learn and grow. Positive affirmations can also help reframe your thinking. Statements like “I am capable of overcoming this” or “I am growing stronger every day” can make a significant difference.

Another key to thriving is building resilience. Resilience is our ability to bounce back from adversity. It’s not about never facing challenges, but about how we respond to them. Here are some actionable steps to build resilience:

·         Develop a Support System: Surround yourself with people who uplift and support you. This could be friends, family, or even a support group.

·         Set Realistic Goals: Break down your larger goals into smaller, manageable steps. Celebrate each small victory along the way.

·         Practice Self-Care: Prioritise activities that nourish your body and mind, such as exercise, meditation, or hobbies you enjoy.

·         Embrace Flexibility: Be open to change and adaptable to new circumstances. This mindset can help you navigate unexpected challenges more effectively.

·         Find Meaning in Adversity: Reflect on what you can learn from difficult situations. Finding purpose in your struggles can transform them into opportunities for growth.

I’ve seen many individuals transform their lives by building resilience. One client, in particular, was able to overcome significant personal and professional challenges by focusing on small, incremental changes. Over time, these changes led to a remarkable transformation in their outlook and well-being.

Now, let’s talk about some specific strategies you can use to move from surviving to thriving.

·         Set Clear Goals: Identify what you want to achieve and create a roadmap to get there. Having a clear direction can provide motivation and purpose.

·         Prioritise Self-Care: Make time for activities that rejuvenate you. This could be as simple as a daily walk, reading a book, or spending time with loved ones.

·         Seek Professional Help: Sometimes, we need a little extra support. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a therapist or coach who can provide guidance and tools to help you thrive.

·         Establish a Routine: Routines can provide a sense of stability and control, which is especially important when transitioning out of survival mode.

·         Celebrate Small Wins: Recognise and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they may seem. This can boost your confidence and motivate you to keep going.

Remember, it’s about making small, manageable changes and building momentum over time. You don’t have to do everything at once. Start with one or two strategies that resonate with you and build from there.

To recap, breaking free from survival mode involves understanding its impact, shifting your mindset, building resilience, and taking actionable steps to thrive. It’s a journey, and every step you take brings you closer to a more empowered and motivated version of yourself.
