I am back once again with the renegade master Michael Avery as we talk kids names, the education system, and other random nonsense before embarking on a lengthy chat about Colony the latest zombie movie from the man who brought you Train to Busan. Is it simply Train to Busan 2? No. It is Peninsula 2? No. It is something in between, a hive mind evolving zombie story with a villain and enough there for it to be top 50 but also plenty of USPs that will turn some viewers off.
Did we like it? Yes.
Would we recommend it? Yes.
Would we watch it again? Probably.
Colony 7/10
Recording in progress.
SPEAKER_00It's been so long since I heard you say recording in progress. I'm genuinely in shock at the same time.
SPEAKER_01Listen, listen.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_02All I'm saying is for the listeners, we was only on a call last week. Was it last week or the week before?
SPEAKER_00Uh what with uh Ellie Ray Winstone and Trust? We did. We were on a call last week.
SPEAKER_02So, so for actual real life time, we haven't spoken just for a week. Oh, that's true. That's true. But but according to the content you're putting out, which is brilliant, by the way, very, very good. Cheers.
SPEAKER_00I'm just trying to look at the last time you actually did one of these shows. When was the last time you did one of these shows? Was it that long ago? I'm trying to think of when it was.
SPEAKER_02So you're thinking of you're thinking of show number. I'm thinking of real time.
SPEAKER_00I was trying to work on the last one we did together, that's all. Right. Lee Donaldson, 23rd of June. The last time you were on. Wow. The last one it was just the last time it was just you and me doing one of these, it was the 8th of June.
SPEAKER_02Wow. Good to see that you've been keeping score.
SPEAKER_00I don't need to, it tells me on the top of the podcast what date you're going to do. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02Well, I don't well in in in in my defense.
SPEAKER_00No, no, no, that's fine. You've got kids and it's summer holidays. I completely understand. I don't really care. It's just it's good to have you up.
SPEAKER_02Yes, you do. One of one of my children's one of my children's actually um left primary school. What's that in the US? It's not it's not like sophomore. It's it's it's it's it's like you know, it's very young. But anyway, for those who are not preschool, he's not four. Um old is he? Uh how old is he? 12 goes to middle school in America. Junior, high, uh, junior high is junior here. So but basically what it is is because he's like leaving its assembly from second assembly, from last ever sports day, there was one week where I kid you not, he had something every single day. I think I just left school. Yeah, yeah, and and that's what me and all the parents are saying. Like they don't like the end of the year show, and these people are like, Oh, would you like some tissues if you're gonna cry? No, no, quite frankly. I don't because yes, all right, my my boy's leaving school, but yeah, he's going to another one. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I I I I they always they tend to give me like the uh well, because they like to spend time, it's a small department that I work in. So each when there's a uh work experience kid for like two days that comes in, it's obviously the kid of someone to do with someone kind of thing. They always give him to me, and it's it's sort of like I was just do the whole talk. It's like, look, I don't they go, oh well, you know, they start telling me what they're studying in GCS. I don't care. Because and no one will. You don't want to be here and neither do I. The world will basically say, Oh my god, it's GCSE results day. No one gives a monkey fuck because you'll do A levels, and as soon as you get A levels, you're not gonna care what your GCSEs were, and as soon as you go to get go to university, you're not gonna care what your A levels were. Yeah, and as soon as you get a job, they won't even care what university you went to. Yeah, so it's a stepping stone, that's all it is.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and it's like with like you had one of the I mean in the UK we've got that program, Gladiators, haven't we? This gladiator come on and go like it doesn't matter what your scores are, you know, like if you all do bad in your GSEs, it score might not be for you. And I'm like, that's a really good message from someone who's put on steroids.
SPEAKER_00Well, I'm saying I'm not saying I'm not saying it's not for you, I'm saying please don't assume me gladiators. I'm I'm just saying you are um we haven't said what gladiator it is either. Wolf. Um it's uh I'm sure it's not Wolf, I think he's dead, but um it is uh you know what Wolf reminds me of Wolf actually reminds me of young Lee Donaldson a little bit, but yeah. Um wow, no, no, I just think there's a there's a thing though. I think if we if we remade um if we we were remaking Dead Dead Zero, then maybe get Wolf out of retirement to play Lee's dad. Yeah. So um that side is plain senior, yeah. Yeah, that's funny. Um no, but I think my my point is like it only matters at the point in time, it really doesn't matter after you've gone past it. It is just you know, kids go, oh my god, I didn't pass my we we had 11 plus when we were growing up, yeah, yeah, but which decides what school you go to, you know, whether you go to it as a comprehensive or you go to like a specialist school, like I did, like a grammar school or a or a math school. I fucking had to get that one in Darrenya, or whether you pass for flying colours as I did. Yeah, I don't think a pass for flying colours that's passed. Um, but it is because it does also doesn't matter because then your GCSEs, a kid who goes to a comprehensive, can do 10 GCSEs now, yeah, you know, like they can do in all the other schools, and then you get your A levels, and you can do four if you want, or none. You get apprenticeship, or go on the dole and be one of those two sponges.
SPEAKER_02I find that basically the uh whole passing your 11 plus is a bit like mingles. If you've passed, you can be in like the elite group, but if you haven't, you have to work a bit harder because your teachers might not be as good. But either, but this is a whole new I think.
SPEAKER_00I think what we need to do is start again. So basically we'll say all this in this is great. Is it all is it great if I just edit it and basically we go from UK listeners?
SPEAKER_02The UK listeners will be like there'll be two types those are going, well done, you're saying what we want. The others will go in no and the and the US and everyone else will be like, I have no idea what we're gonna talk about.
SPEAKER_00We don't want to lose the listeners in our opening five-minute diatribe, though, do we? And who is Lee Donaldson? Exactly. Lucy's thing, exactly. So um I don't know if I'll keep it. Come on, keep coming, come on. We're doing it. So anyway, so you've basically been doing lots of kids stuff, uh, which is fine because it's it's the middle, it's the end of July, which is why time to do kids things, I would say. So yeah, yeah. That aside, um, the reason why we are here, ladies and gentlemen, if you're still here, hi, uh is we're gonna talk about colony. So colony, uh, we've we've known about colony for quite a long time. It was actually hinted at actually last year, it was hinted at. Um, it is the uh the movie, it's not anything to do with Train to Boo Song, but it is from the writer and director Yosan Ho, um, who is the guy that bought us Train to Boo Song, arguably one of the greatest zombie movies ever made. So this is his next big zombie movie. He's actually been quite busy between the two. So everyone goes, Oh my god, he makes the best zombie movies. Well, he made one, and then he sort of left it for about 15 years and made another. Um, it's like saying Danny Boyle is a zombie movie specialist. So, you know, or Christopher Nolan just makes space movies. It's not true. We just want the ones we're focusing on. Um, there was there was always this talk about I was thinking about it, it was actually called Swarm in the beginning, but I think Swarm and Colony is kind of like a a South Korean to English translation problem because it was called Swarm, and it made sense that it was called Swarm because the original footage we saw was sort of like the the zombies running on all fours, you know, all connected like they are insects. So Swarm would have made it been a decent name for it as well as colony. I'm sure it means the same thing in South Korea. There was also this talk about at the same time, James Won, who's the guy who made all of the conjuring movies, um, and Aquaman and some of the Fast and Furious nonsense. He um uh he was there would talk about him making Train to New York, which was gonna be like a US almost exact remake of Train to Booson. Um, there is still a hint, and it I think it's more of a whiff than a hint, um, of a movie called The Last Train to New York, which I can find in conversations around the world. However, I think that's a lot of bullshit when people put no word of a lie, I just saw the poster, someone had created a poster. Guess which three people do they have starring in Last Train to New York? If you could base based on the based on all of the zombie movies and shows you and I have ever seen, what three characters, like woman and two guys, would you put as the main three characters in a movie in a zombie movie?
SPEAKER_02Everything within no hit me because I was gonna say like Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon and Miliovovich as Alice. Right, see Milly, see the Daryl Dixon one I'm a bit confused with, but yeah, it's yeah, straight away I was thinking Rick Grimes, but no, it can't be that obvious.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, so basically someone has created all of these fake fucking horrible AI pictures and images of the three of them and a train on fire and zombies attacking, trying to palm it off as a this is the 2026 movie, but it's not real, it's all bullshit. What isn't bullshit, ladies and gentlemen, is colony. So we ended up seeing colony, fortunately, um, because it's come out now. Um, and to describe it, it's actually quite different to train to boost on. Um, it has elements of other zombie movies. There are elements set in a shopping mall that we all call shopping mall scenes. So the poems is quite simple. It's actually a bioterrorist attack uh by uh Professor uh Professor Sue, who's actually played by the same actor that played the villainous captain in Peninsula or um uh Busan, trained to Busan Peninsula uh uh Ku Kyu Kwan, who is absolutely great as a as a villain, but I'm gonna bring up later so you can think about it when we we talk about it later, that you don't normally get a villain in zombie movies. Zombie movies are normally it's zombies, it's a horde of zombies that move as a horde. Uh there's no alpha. There isn't normally an alpha. He is the alpha in this. We have Lucius Bain as the alpha in Dead Zero. Uh, there are alphas. He's not really an alpha, he's something slightly different to the alpha, even though he he does come across as a bit of an alpha. Um, so basically the premise is quite simple. That um Professor Kwan, uh, she and her husband go to this. Um, she's basically a disgraced academic um who is a specialist in the field of turning uh nature into technology. So if you could imagine creating, you know what it's like in um The Last of Us, where all of the tendrils of the spores all contact each or connect to each other. Imagine turning that into circuitry. That's what it's the idea is that they are turning nature and things in from nature into technology and technological items like a circuit board, for example. So she goes with her husband to for because apparently there's a job potential job offer when she speaks to the CEO, who has no idea what she's talking about. And it turns out it was a giant roost because this evil Professor CEO also has a gripe with her because she was working with his dad, and he was also disgraced, except rather than just continuing it like life has gone on, uh he blew his brains out, so he's holding a bit of a grudge. We've all been there, we've all been there, but holding a bit of a grudge because she effectively, in his eyes, killed her dad. Sadly, he has also, or excitingly for us as as viewers, he has also perfected what they were working on. So he has perfected a virus that will allow via some sort of mucus um tell uh you know, sort of connection between individuals. And uh he injects the CEO with it, who runs out and starts at attacking and biting other people, who then wake up. Uh they're also covered in this horrible whitey goop. They turn into these zombies as well, but they all collectively, when one of the zombies learns something, they all learn it. So it is quite standard in the fact that it's a zombie outbreak, the outbreak spreads. Um, people really don't know what's going on, it's happening in the background, but they lock down the building that it's in, and it's kind of like a it's a a car parking garage on the bottom floors, then it's a shopping mall, and then it's a hotel stroke conference center. Uh, so they need to fight their way down and through the building and out, and there's a group, and it's always always the motley crew of there's the girl being bullied and her two bullies. There is, you know, the the security guard and his disabled daughter sister. Uh there's the sporty guy who was sporty when he was younger. There's always a dickhead suit. There was a there's a dickhead suit, uh, and a few others that are kind of this motley crew that are banding together whilst everyone else quickly, very quickly, turns to turns into zombies. Oh, and a cop who's gone in to try to arrest the bad guy. Um and it's exciting because it is a simple something's broken out in this building, they've locked it down, and now we're trying to escape, which, based on that description, is wreck. But um it's this concept that every time they try to move or do something, they need to do something new because the zombies are learning everything you've done. And so it starts off with the zombies know you smell a certain way. So Professor Kwan, who's the clever leader of the group, she realizes that if they think we all smell a certain way, well, let's all smell a certain way. So she sends a guy out who gets loads of the same perfume. They all cover themselves in the same perfume, so it knows they now that human smells like this perfume. They then remove the perfume and just put the perfume on dummies and mannequins in a shop and then cover themselves in antifreeze or turpentine or something, so they no longer smell like a human, so they can effectively just escape. Yeah, which is clever, and like the the zombie- I thought that was clever. Then you have things like the there's cardboard cutouts of people and they're move they sort of like attach it to the to the disabled girl's wheelchair and stuff, and the zombies attack those until the zombies realize, well, these aren't humans, these are just flat. So then all the zombies learn that. And every so often they have to keep changing their the humans have to keep changing their tactics to stay one side.
SPEAKER_02They need to evolve with the zombies.
SPEAKER_00Exactly that. So, and it is that there's some betrayal, which is pretty grim. Uh, I thought the betrayal was particularly grim of the uh the security guard and his sister, disabled sister, who's been helping them out. Um and it is Dan, is that them trying to the the it's also there's a lot of blame game going on. At one point, the mayor is trying to get all the scientists to sign off on that all these people are dead now. We we should just kill them all because they're brain dead. Uh and that just so he can like just blow the place up and kill everybody in there. Um, there's lots of blame game from the politic uh politicians, which he's seen in lots of things, including all of us are dead. There's always lots of blame. Yeah, there's a blame game at the politic political level. Um but it's them escaping. Uh and it's them escaping, but having to evolve because every time one, anyone, any single member of the hive mind sees something or learns something, it kind of like screeches into the air and they all do, and then they all run. Exactly that. Well, all the all the while, whilst Professor Sue, uh the villain, is also now seeing through their eyes and learning from them, and they're learning from him. So at one point he's kind of like handcuffed and they're talking via WhatsApp, which is quite clever, I thought. Um, other than that, I think a lot of the deaths were kind of telegraphed, they're kind of obvious. You kind of knew that the bullying girl was gonna be killed by a zombie-fied version of the girl she was bullying. Um, I wasn't expecting the betrayal of the security guard and his sister, yeah. Uh, or her to actually die. I was hoping that he was gonna save her, but when she did die, him then saying, Well, fuck you. Well, I'm gonna kill a lot of you. No one is getting out of here alive. I sort of went, Yes, that's exactly what we want. Um, but that's it, and it's great fun. Up at the point, they're trying to keep this the authorities are trying to get in to try to get him because he is either the cure or the cause, and they want both, um, whilst trying to stop everyone else getting out, and he obviously just wants the wants it to get out because then he'll have a hive mind the size of South Korea, and then beyond, he wants a hive mind the size of the world where everybody learns what everybody else knows. Yeah, um, that's kind of in a nutshell. So, what did you think? What did you think about before you went into it, before you saw it, what were you thinking about Colony? Because I was a little bit I was I was excited based on the trailers alone.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, and and I I liked the whole hive mind thing because obviously we'd we'd read up on a little bit on it before. I'm not gonna lie. Um, I did actually re watch um uh Peninsula before I watched this a couple of weeks ago. And I'll be frank, I didn't mind Peninsula, or it's just yeah, it's just yeah, it's just not groundbreaking, is it? And and I was just hoping being more trained. Less peninsula. And I and I think and I think ultimately it is, you know, it is it is immensely better than Peninsula, um, in my opinion. I really do. Um I think train to Moussa Frost is kind of like an eight.
SPEAKER_00Uh and I think Peninsula's like a six, six and a half, because it's there's nothing wrong with peninsula. It is a you're we're sending people actually, you know what peninsula is? Peninsula is the South Korean version of Army of the Dead. They're basically because they're being sent, they're being sent in to go and get some cash and to bring the cash out again, but from a by a criminal gang in in uh Army of the Dead, they're being sent in to get all the cash from the uh the the Vegas casinos before it's blown up. It's the same kind of story, except they're just regular people who were all Korean citizens and kind of down on their luck because they're now without a state. Yeah. They have no rights. So exactly.
SPEAKER_02And yeah, and like the CGI car driving was good at first, but then after about five minutes, it got a bit dull, didn't it?
SPEAKER_00Uh there is a lot of car driving in it, but you know, it it is what it would have been. So, you know, the people that stay behind, you know, turn into scavengers. Uh, so we actually had uh uh Ku Q Juan, who plays Professor Sue in this, is the the evil captain in that one, a villain in both, looks the part, works the works.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, I've I think I think with with with Colony, I I did really enjoy it. I thought I thought some some some bits of it were really, really well done and well acted, especially the bit where they're standing there pretending to be mannequins, and they've got all of the um infected snarling in their faces, and the way they manage to not break character in what is a truly terrifying moment. I mean, if like they don't even blink, and they've got these Korean um, you know, like infected zombies just snarling in their face and they don't flinch. I thought that was so well done and so tense. Um, you know, and then they're waiting for just obviously some kind of reaction or some kind of click um to sort of get the the infected to go away from them. I thought that was very well done. Um, I thought the main villain, um I absolutely apologize for this. Some of the Korean names are quite difficult, so um I'm just gonna refer to Keep. I thought Professor Shu was excellent. I thought he really played the part of the villain well, like we were saying, he he personified it well. Um, Korean zombies again continue to be terrifying. Um, the idea with a WhatsApp was very, very good because obviously if he heard where they were, he would know or he could send reinforcements and all this kind of stuff. Um, but I just I just think for me, sometimes it's tough because train to Busan was arguably unique. You know, you've seen that the zombies on a train, there was things on there you'd seen before the game changers that you hadn't seen in other places or or very rarely seen. But you know, when, like you say, supermarket or or or shopping mall, straight away you're like, this is done. Before you've done anything, this is done. Um, and then you've got the bit with the infected monkeys 28 days later.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02He's infected monkeys trying to smash through it.
SPEAKER_00I think I picked up on the disabled sister being carried around on the back of the brother is alien resurrection.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, or or it or or even or even the disabled brother, um, you know, Texas Change for a massacre.
SPEAKER_00You know, you've got exactly there was there was a bit of that, it was a bit of lack of originality and just clumping ideas together.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but uh um but again, it it it was the thing is it like I always as as you know, listeners, I always read the reviews on things. If you read it on Wikipedia, everyone's like, it's a very good film, it's just not boussan, and it's very enjoyable, it's just not booson, and you know, some people are like this is trained to Bousson on steroids, it's not that good, you know. It is a an enjoyable film. I could I could totally see why, Darren, for you. I mean, I think you said it on the last show we did with with um with Employee of the Dead, you know. This was I I might paraphrase you, you said it was your highlight of the year so far.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I you did you didn't think I mean I could see why you said what you say because you then said it wasn't as good as and I understand your point of view, yeah. Um, you know, it but then I guess for me, I've been waiting for something from the train to boost on director for a long time. Whereas we've been getting a new 28 years later every day for the last two, so yeah, umbe I would say that you were right, Bone Temple is a great movie, genuinely great movie. Uh top 10 movie, I would say. This wasn't a top 10 movie, but I was looking forward to this more. Also, I would say that train I said uh the Bone Temple is just an extension of uh of 28 years later.
SPEAKER_02This is something unique and new, which is and and I think and I think what what they're struggling with with colony and and peninsula's the same, you know. I think you you you get it a lot in that kind of far eastern culture with with mangas and and all this kind of things, in the sense that you get things like like it is an example. So like you've got the um The Walking Dead, and what it will be, it'll be like fear the walking dead, and the Walking Dead, like the the world beyond, and the Walking Dead, Rick and Rashad. Yes, there's a hut, there's hundreds of um different ways of The Walking Dead. You've got the games, you've got the um cartoons, uh the couple cartoons, the mangas, you know, all this kind of stuff, but they're all they're all in the same universe, you know, they just might be different parts or different time zones, but something will happen where it's linked to the main stuff. I think the problem that Peninsula had is Peninsula had um Battle Royale presents peninsula. There's there's not that much in there that's overly similar, in my opinion, or or or too much trainy stuff there. And then again, you try to. Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, exactly but uh train to and and with this, you know, like you said earlier on, it's like oh the guy who did train to buisson's now done the new zombie movie. So now you all think, oh, this is gonna be like train to Busan presents color colony, but it's not. So I think if you go in with a train to Bisson head on, you're not gonna enjoy it as much. And I think not that's what I did, because I didn't, but you if if you are going to get this is from the same guy who did this, you are gonna make comparisons.
SPEAKER_00You're saying this movie cost 12 million to make. Yeah, it made 32 in South Korea alone, including nearly its money back the first weekend.
SPEAKER_02It it it's certainly not a bad film, and it is really enjoyable, and I did like it. I'm I'm not gonna say I didn't.
SPEAKER_00The critics didn't, though. That's the thing. It's like What on Tomatoes only gave it 64%, which is average. Um the Metacritic only said it was 56%. You know, Dread Central gave it four out of five, but then they they do, but everyone else is kind of giving it, you know, C plus three out of five, yeah, middle of the road kind of stuff, yeah. Ebook, you know, on Wadger Eba, they gave it negative feedback. Um I I can see why. I mean, it did feel a bit it's one of these things where it's a concept, right? So the whole hive mind thing within zombie, it's all about that. If you if you don't get that, if we didn't have that element, it's just a regular zombie movie. So that's why I think it that's why I think it's elevated above it, because you've got this whole learning thing that the zombies are doing, and then the then the shared hive mind knowledge thing as well. So plus it's got the you know the the the villain who is trying to do this as a you know revenge kick. Um I think people I think it's weird it's a weird one because the th it's a double-edged sword, because what sets it apart for me are those elements, but those are the elements that people are bitching about. So it's like what I think is good about it is what someone else may think it's bad. If you went down, if you played it safe and went down the middle of the road and didn't do the hive, oh yeah, yeah, then everyone would think, oh yeah, it's just as yeah, it's just another Korean zombie movie cracking zombie body parts.
SPEAKER_02What's this got to do? Yeah, and and and I can see why they did that. But what one of the things I thought about as well, because I'm not sure if the listeners are aware, but I am a Doctor Who fan, Darren. Um wow, shock. Um, but there was a there was an episode in in um Matt Smith's um tenure, and it was called I think it was called like Nightmare in Silver, and it was about the Cybermen. So basically, and I've got a few similarities with this, if it was intentional or not, but basically what would happen with a Cybermen was they would they would get shot or they would get destroyed, and then as they're laying there, they'd go upgrade, and then suddenly they would get up from being like blown up. And one of the criticisms that got, and and spoiler, the end of the day, the doctor the doctor saves the day, everything's fine, no more cybermen, yada yada yada, but then there's like the whole, oh, there's one Cyberman floating around space, and that's how it keeps the continuity of Cybermen. But one of the main criticisms that that got, that specific episode was was if this keeps going the way it's going, it will get to a point where the Cybermen are indestructible and it becomes boring. And I think there could have been a slight I I think they did it well when they kind of ended it how it did, and they kept that contained mind a little bit more um kind of not as immortal as it could be, but there was a bit like you're saying there, there's a bit where you're thinking, well, eventually these are gonna become indestructible.
SPEAKER_00Well, yeah, because because they because they would have infected everybody, and basically everybody and you can't stop them. There's a there's a Rick and Morty um two episodes actually where he dates a hive mind, yeah, and everybody shares a consciousness, uh, and it's whether the whether the villain or actually hero, whatever she is, uh takes over Unity, I think it's called, takes over an individual. So all of them are kind of under her control, but if she wants to just take over one, she can't. You know what it's like? It's like the agents in the matrix.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the agents in the matrix can take over anybody in the matrix that's a anybody in the matrix, anybody in the matrix at all taken over by an agent, uh, because therefore the agent must be able to control them and see what they're doing. There's a whole thing at the end of the first one where there's the homeless guy on the train, on the train platform. Yeah, yeah. He thinks he's going to escape, and then he sort of sees Morpheus go through the telephone, and then he goes, and of course the agent's picked up on that, and then Smith arrives. So again, I I think it's a tricky one. I really enjoyed it. And I what set it apart from other things is uh is really clever, you know, to do with the hive mind and the communication thing. And what they did to s to then keep one step ahead was really clever as well. But then I think those are the elements that are gonna just turn people off of it.
SPEAKER_02I've I think it I think it got to a point where it tries to be too clever. Do you get what I mean? And then and then I've I think I think it's really tough to explain in the sense that what I think it did was it tried to be too clever and it stayed loyal to what it wanted to be, because a lot of other films they would have done something like this, and we've seen this in so many zombie movies before. Where how many times have we have me and you watched something and gone, well, this happened, but then five minutes later this totally got forgotten? Or you know, someone's like suddenly the zombie can't do this, but then in the next scene the zombie.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, they they changed from runners to walkers, and yeah, I watched I watched one literally a couple of days ago where uh the zombies were all blind, okay, so people had to be quiet, but then there was this other zombie that wasn't blind and then could see one of the characters and was chasing them around, and it was just like well, that's inconsistent. I don't like inconsistency with my zombies, I don't even like it with having one-ners and walkers, you know, in the same movie, because you're either gonna be one or the other, yeah. You know, be consistent.
SPEAKER_02And and I think and I think with this, it it it tried to stay consistent with what it was, and I think it it that element of it it did it well, but then it was like, is this to the detriment of what what the movie is trying to be, if you get what I mean? You know, like like you the whole point of when you make movies- or not whole point, because obviously there's that reason, but when you make movies, especially with like zombies or Dracula or or any any bad guy, is that they've got to lose, and you know, or or the goodies have got to beat. I mean, it's very rare do you get a movie where the baddies end, because even then you you it bec it becomes its own kind of subgenre of you know, oh, like you'll see it on what culture, oh, the list of movies where the baddies win because it doesn't happen often. But I think in this movie you were in a situation where you want you want the zombies to be to meet their comeuppance, you want them to be defeated and the evil scientist guy to be killed, but you're making them indestructible. So, how do we end this? And and I thought I thought they ended it well.
SPEAKER_00Um kind of, other than the last shot, which is what is one of those, you know, Jason Voorhees has been drowned, and then the last shot is him opening his eyes. Yeah, the last shot we had was all the zombies had frozen because that because the guy had been killed, because he was controlling them, and then one of them stops being frozen, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, that's like the cheap cop hat.
SPEAKER_00Um but what it reminds me of the way you were describing it, then it made me think what this is very much like is the movies where there's an AI and it's limited to being in a in a computer in a secure place and it's trying to get out into the world, you know. And uh there was a movie with Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington, where he was like this AI character, Russell Crowe, was it being created, and all he wanted to do was get out into the real world because then he could take over everyone's phones, computers, and he can go and wherever he was and do what was and it was like that. And I think they need that idea of it's the the main guy, the main villain, Professor Sue, is just trying to get his thing out there because he doesn't care about society anymore.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Whereas the two women professors were actually more in more interested in the fact that their reputation's gonna be tarnished and they'll be classed as outsiders.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, because they were like, Well, we told them not to do this and they did it anyway, and but they're gonna blame us, and now we need to get used to being blamed for stuff. And I was like, Well, also, South Korea is now gonna be fucking destroyed by zombies, so maybe get some perspective. Um I mean, it's I I enjoyed it, it's certainly a good movie. The special effects are superb, as always. I thought the the concepts were really good, but that's all it can be. It's it's a genre piece, right? It's a zombie movie shirt movie from South Korea. We love the cracking, cracking um uh bottle.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and that's a slogan. And that and that is exactly my point. There there's there's nothing wrong with this.
SPEAKER_00This is fine, this is good, but it's not trained to bu song, so do compare it to train to yes, never watch it.
SPEAKER_02No, I'm only kidding. Um but what it is is But it's better than Peninsula, so it's I think Peninsula is a six, six and a half it's better it's better than most of the stuff we watch, you know. It's definitely better than most of the stuff we watch, you know, and and like I say, I thought the Korean zombies, I thought that that there were some great moments of tension. Like I said, that that's like w when you watch not just zombie movies, but if you watch horror movies, the amount of times we do or I do, you know, sometimes you do get things that you know could be frightening, but you're kind of used to the jump scares now. If if it's like if you watch um um weapons recently, you know, that that that that got me a little bit, but again, would it be as terrifying? You know, you it's the argument with desensitization, you know, would if you didn't watch some go over and over again, would you be affected by it as much kind of thing? And I think that there's some great tension in this. I mentioned it earlier on with the um with the scene with the mannequins where they're pretending to be mannequins. I thought the scene at the end, or just before the end, should I say, where um the woman throws the coat on the infected person and they start copying it was brilliant because they recognize the coat, so they're going after the coat rather than the girl. That was that was really, really clever, and you don't see things like that before. Um I like the idea that that they're evolving alongside the the zombies, so they've got think ahead, the the WhatsApp message in that there is a lot of good in this.
SPEAKER_00There is I scored it seven, right? So I I scored Peninsula 7.5, this is a seven, and uh train to boost on is an eight, right? So there's a clear um clear difference between them all, and so I I it it's not a top 20, but it's a top 50, right? So we've got I'd agree with that. We've got a lot of shit. So the sevens actually go down to 40. So it's definitely it's a top 40 zombie movie of all time because it sits there quite happily between uh In the Flesh, I Survived a Zombie Holocaust, Dead Snow, Blood Quantum, Apocalypse Z, The Beginning of the End, Um, You know, Final Cut, all of those, the first 28 years later, Anime of the Apocalypse, you know, all of those. And they're good films to be associated with. Absolutely, but it's not, and you know, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, the resort, you know, Zombie versus Savage Land, you know, or Night East the World is there as well, and the first Resident Evil and Wreck. So it's in good company, it's just never gonna never gonna be a top 20 movie. It's certainly not gonna be a top 10 movie, it's not the train to boost on, it's not as good as Mads or Girl with All the Gifts or Zombieland or All of Us Are Dead or any of those that are just half a point higher than it. So I think it's you know, I think it's really good. I think anyone that likes zombie movies should definitely see it. Anyone that likes South Korean zombie movies should absolutely see it. However, much like us when we watched 28 years later, we wanted something that it wasn't, and it ended up, you know, detracting from how good a movie it was because we wanted something else. If you go into this thinking I'm gonna watch Train to Busan 2, you're not, and you're gonna go, this isn't that, I'm not happy, I'm gonna rate it lower than it actually is. It's a standalone South Korean zombie movie that has a clever hive mind premises premise just watch it like that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I think I think that is I think that's very fair. Like I say, if you if you go if you go in expecting um if you go in expecting the world, you won't even get the moon.
SPEAKER_00Or yes, or or that. I lost my training for halfway first. I was gonna say, where's it going for this? It's like yeah, yeah, if if you buy three pigs and go to the market, you might not get a cup of tea. What yeah, where's it going with this? Um no, but I think I think we both I think we all in we're both in agreement. You know, it was good. I mean, it is a top 50 zombie movie, you know, of all time. Which means because the thing is there's a lot of shit in this genre. So for it to be it's a good story, it's well acted, it's got superb special effects, it's actually original in its in its storyline, especially with the people having to like be one step ahead. Um, there's nothing really wrong with this movie at all.
SPEAKER_02And I think it shows, I think it also shows as well that like you you've said this for years, and until we get one that's a dud um you are right. Koreans just get this right.
SPEAKER_00I'm actually gonna go just do a quick search. I've got the spreadsheet open. I'm just gonna quick search all the South Koreans. We have seen a lot of South Korean movies. We've seen 14 South Korean movies in show. Oh wow, so let me just do it. There are two, there are there is one that's shit. You haven't seen it, but all of us are dead. Train to Boosan, Colony, Zombie vs Happiness, Newtopia, hashtag alive, rampant, soul station and train to booson peninsula, both are that project wolf hunting, zombie for sale, all of those are brilliant. All of those are 5.5 between 5.5 and 8. Yeah, you know, um, they're all top halves, yeah. They're top they're absolutely top halves. Um, and then we've just got zombie school, because it was a kind of a bad, cheap indie, and then gangnam zombie was a pile of shit that was 2.5. But so 12 of the 14 zombies apart from something that was absolute toilet. Absolute horseshit. Um, 12 out of 14 are over 5.5.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but that's and that's not bad.
SPEAKER_00For you to show for you to have like an 80 something percent ratio, that means they're all the eight 12 of the 14 zombie movies from South Korea and shows are recommendable and rewatchable. 12 of the 14. You cannot have that. You've got not haven't got that ratio with any other country. No, you know, because if you watch Japanese stuff, there's always going to be a couple of really bizarre, weird stuff things that are toilet like Tokyo zombie, or you're gonna watch American stuff, you know. Two out of every three zombie movies that comes out of America is a bag of shit. Yeah, no offense US No, but they they must know this because people will just generate it, you know.
SPEAKER_02Just like the World Cup, the majority of its shit, but it has its moments.
SPEAKER_00Oh, have you heard the latest thing about the Saudis and Americans?
SPEAKER_02Oh, don't get me started.
SPEAKER_00The America so basically, you know that uh Trump has sorry, you can tune out if you don't care about soccer people. Um that uh basically Trump just ha signed the new nuclear agreement with the Saudis saying we're gonna help you guys. uh with your uh with your nuclear power um one of the kickbacks from that is that the next world cup is uh well the global one because it's the hundredth so that's kind of like there's a game in Paraguay Uruguay and Brazil and then it moves to Morocco Portugal and Spain the one after that is in Saudi. Of course it is Saudi the Saudis have the ability under FIFA rules to say we're actually unable to host it and if they leave it at the to the last minute a country will come in we were going to do it actually the UK was going to do it when Qatar was going to be um you know was way behind we were going to go if Qatar can't do it we could do it we'll do it yeah yeah we've got like a hundred fucking stadiums that are ready to go and the infrastructure um you could literally just host it now um whereas the the the Saudis are gonna could go even they've got they've got their own league now which is rubbish um that they can go oh no no we've only got two weeks before the World Cup yeah we can't yeah sorry we can't host it and the Americans will go we can yeah so Trump has even said that you know we're not gonna necessarily be able to do the next one but 2038 we could host it what a guy what a guy will they be dead by then please oh devastated if he's gonna be dead by then I wanted him to be dead by this World Cup to be fair oh don't mate mate we've got too many people who who listen who like Trump we've got to be careful there are the crazies um but then you're making me grinch and then um uh yeah and then I saw that you know Trump uh and his oh Trump's son-in-law's brother is looking to start a privately owned company that will own the FIFA World Cup franchise and then make all the money out of the World Cup and guess who they are suggested should be the president of this new company not Gianni Infantino yes Infani is gonna be the person they're suggesting and it's like it's not remotely corrupt because FIFA is a non-for-profit charity that has two billion euros in its coffers and now they're gonna create an American company because they've just realized how much money they can make out of it.
SPEAKER_02And then and then Geo Fanny you're all haters if you if you like I'm sorry that you're all so negative that you've had to be haters.
SPEAKER_00It's like what just the footballing community the only people who don't hate you are idiot American fans and Argent and then everybody who loves Leonor Messi and big business who who loved your mid mid uh you know uh ad breaks stroke hydration breaks which broke which broke iFab rules do you know what iFab is Dan I do not know what IFab is so iFab are the people who make the laws of the game yeah it's not FIFA it's not UAFA it's a it's IFab they make the laws of the game so whether you are a man who's playing in the park with his mates on a Sunday morning um but obviously official game um or if you are a professional footballer you all play under IFAB laws laws of the game yeah the laws of the game state you should have no more than 15 minutes at half time so the head of FIFA broke the laws of the game so that Coldplay could have a sing and dance but we did see Shakira so there's every cloud that is true that is true um anyway back to back to back to um you got an everything ladies and gentlemen today you was talking about bringing a child up through the uh educational system in the UK and the future of FIFA and the World Cup competition itself um as well as colony or swarm uh so I think we would recommend you see it yeah uh not the world cup no we would recommend you see colony if you can get an opportunity to see it if you love Korean zombie movies you will love it um it isn't trained to business so we are recommending you do not compare it to train to business when you watch it and you will get more enjoyment out of it that's it's it's that's it stop recording stop recording is stopped
