Bringing Hope, driven by science. Isabelle Amigues, MD, is a physician scientist with a speciality in rheumatology. She has trained both in Paris, France as well as Columbia University, in New York City. At age 40, in the midst of an existential crisis, she was diagnosed with stage IV metastatic breast cancer. A timely meeting with a non-traditionally trained practitioner taught her a different approach to disease. She experienced the power of meditation, visualization, energy healing and love. Her journey through cancer inspired her to learn more about these alternative approaches, and now that she has studied many of them she has integrated them into her own practice of medicine. Dr. Amigues is the author of multiple book chapters and scientific articles in rheumatology. She is the founder and CEO of UnabridgedMD.

It’s Not All in Your Head: Lisa’s Story of Rare Autoimmunity, Resilience & Finding Hope
Welcome back to the UnabridgedMD Podcast, where hope is driven by science.
In this deeply personal and emotional episode, Dr. Isabelle Amigues speaks with Lisa, a longtime patient and now dear friend, about her courageous journey through multiple chronic autoimmune conditions—including the rare and complex Behçet’s disease.
Lisa shares what it felt like to be dismissed, misdiagnosed, and told her symptoms were “all in her head”—until a friend connected her with Dr. Amigues. From that first phone call, a partnership in healing began.
Together, they navigated layers of complexity, multidisciplinary care, and moments of despair—but also discovered answers, regained quality of life, and cultivated lasting hope.
In this episode, you’ll hear:
Lisa’s experience of being gaslit and misdiagnosed for years
How a rare autoimmune disease disrupted her career as an ER nurse
The emotional impact of “invisible illness” and being told she looked too healthy to be sick
Why early diagnosis and a collaborative care approach matter deeply
Dr. Amigues’ reflections on listening, belief, and how hope begins with being heard
A message to anyone living in doubt: you deserve to be taken seriously
💬 "You told me it wasn’t all in my head—and that’s where the hope began." — Lisa
