In Health,
Colette

When I was a little girl, I would go to the dentist and I was always encouraged to breathe out of my nose instead of my mouth, especially while sleeping in order to prevent tooth decay.  And I always felt a little, a little hard to do sometimes. Sometimes I felt suffocated, not being able to access my mouth for breathing.

I'm not sure if the dentist knew about one of the trends today around breathing through the nose. It's called mewing. Mewing is a technique that involves positioning the tongue against the roof of the mouth while closing the lips and setting the teeth together lightly. It's named after Dr. John Mew, an orthodontist from Britain who developed these principles as part of Orthotropics, a field of dentistry focusing on facial growth and guidance.

You may wonder how it affects you. You might be wondering why I'm talking about mewing and I love all things wellness and to try to do things as naturally as possible. And Dr. Mew has shown examples of children and adults that were able to avoid orthodontics using his technique. He believes Everyone can benefit from the technique and that most will see dramatic results.

What exact results can you expect to receive? First, remember that this doesn't happen overnight. It may take six months to years to correct your facial features, but I think it's worth a look into today. I will give you five benefits associated. With mewing, number one, an improved jawline definition by correctly positioning the tongue and practicing good oral posture.

Some people believe that mewing can enhance the definition and appearance of the jawline over time.  Number two, better breathing, proper tongue posture may help open up the airway, potentially improving breathing for some individuals. There is mention in some with sleep apnea that it can improve the airway as well.

Number three, improved posture. Mewing encourage overall benefits of posture as it aligns the jaw to the tongue and neck and it can positively,  sorry, we'll start back with three, um, improve posture. Okay.  I'm sorry. Number three, improved posture. Mewing encourages overall better posture as aligning the tongue, jaw, and neck can have a positive effect on body alignment.

When our bodies are in alignment. It is a gift that we give our bodies, improved digestion, awareness, movement. Posture is confidence too. I remember as a child, my dad would march us against the wall and  have a stand flat against the wall. And then he would take his thumbs and he would position our shoulders firmly.

Against the wall. And he would say, okay, now walk away and stay that way. We would laugh at the time, but looking back, I'm glad he did. Number four, reduced neck and shoulder tension by promoting better posture. Mewing might help  alleviate.  Let's go back to number four, number four, reduced neck and shoulder tension by promoting better posture.

Mewing might help alleviate tension in the neck and shoulders. When our bodies feel free of pain, there is no better feeling. Number five, potential improvement in sleep quality by possibly improving airway openness. Mewing might contribute to better sleep for some individuals, particularly. Those who have issues with snoring or sleep apnea, Dr. Mew believes that through widening the jaw. And opening the airways through proper positioning, it can correct a plethora of conditions, including being able to breathe better out of the nose.  I also believe that breathing out of the nose is a natural filtration system. It helps to filter out toxins in the air that we breathe in naturally.

To start mewing today. Here's a simple guideline. Number one, position your tongue, flatten your tongue against the roof of your mouth, covering as much surface area as possible. The tip of your tongue should be just behind the front upper part of your teeth. Number two, close your lips. Keep your lips gently closed without forcing them.

Number three, lightly contact your teeth. Your upper and lower teeth should be lightly touching or almost touching. Avoid clenching your jaw. Number four, breathe through your nose. Ensure you're breathing through your nose, not your mouth, maintaining this posture throughout the day and especially at night.

Now some disclaimers, it's important to approach mewing with realistic expectations that anything that is significant change,

sorry, we'll start back with,  um, it's important.  It's important to approach mewing with realistic expectations and understand that any significant changes might take a long time. Additionally, the effectiveness and scientific backing of mewing are topics of debate among dental and orthodontic professionals.

Therefore, Consult with a healthcare, a healthcare provider before starting is advisable to ensure it aligns with your health needs and goals. So, I would like to know if you're going to go and check out Mewing today, let me know what you find out. Are there other topics that are buzzing around that you would like to know more about?
