In Health,

[00:00:00] Colette Brown: Our next guest has a passion for helping others reclaim their health. This former chiropractor turned health concierge blends science and intuition to guide clients back to their innate roots focused on gut health, parasites, and root causes of the solution. Her holistic approach stems from a deep understanding of the body's cellular wisdom.
[00:01:22] Colette Brown: And gut brain connection. It's my pleasure to welcome Dr. Patty Gonzalez. Welcome. Thank you so much, Colette. It's an absolute pleasure to be here. It's great. We connected through a speaking event that is coming up pretty soon here. And your, your work is really fascinating and it's also timely as I'm in Los Angeles and we have just gone through the the Palisades fire and there is so much toxicity in the water, in the air, now in the ground, like it's, it's pretty intense and we're going to get to that in a moment, but first I want to get to know you a little bit more.
[00:02:04] Colette Brown: So if you could tell us Where you are, where you're from originally, maybe a favorite childhood memory from, you know, five, seven, 11, that might have shaped you or pointed you in the direction that you're at today.
[00:02:19] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Yeah, absolutely. So I'm originally from San Diego, actually. So born and raised in Southern California, actually ended up in Northern California for undergrad and then stayed around for my chiropractic degree in Northern California as well.
[00:02:34] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So California born and bred and went to chiropractic school. So I'm a retired chiropractor. And turned health concierge, but some, one thing that really shaped, it's funny that I ended up as a doctor because I remember being like five or six and saying, like, I want to be a doctor when I grow up and as I kind of grew, I was like, Ooh, but I don't like the sight of blood and just also just traditional Western medicine, it wasn't something that really resonated with me.
[00:03:02] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So as I found myself in chiropractic school, I was like, Oh, this is the doctor that I was meant to be. So. That's really, it really shaped just who I am. I always wanted to help
[00:03:11] Colette Brown: people. So now I get. Would your, were your parents very holistic in their approach to health? Actually, no, I very
[00:03:19] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: much grew up in the Western, Western world.
[00:03:21] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: We went to see Dr. Wasserman. Anytime something came up, I still very vividly remember his office. And he was a great doctor, but I just, for me, like, and how, how things resonated, I was just like this. It didn't always make sense. It's
[00:03:36] Colette Brown: how it's how I grew up. Yeah. Okay. Interesting. And was there ever, ever a moment where you saw that parallel between functional medicine and Western medicine and said, Oh yeah, I'm taking this route.
[00:03:50] Colette Brown: Like it was there ever an experience that happened to you or you just intuitively stepped into it?
[00:03:56] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: I more intuitively stepped into it. There wasn't a specific like, Ooh, no, I don't like that. It was more the intuition of like, there, the foods that I was eating or the things that I was doing exercise wise, or I started to take some supplements and I was like, this makes more sense to be able to support the body.
[00:04:13] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: And, and help its processes versus put in a pharmaceutical or a medication. Right. Which is
[00:04:21] Colette Brown: what we love to do over here. Right. And they're great. Like Western medicine said, I always say there's a time and a place. Absolutely.
[00:04:28] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So if I break my arm, I'm not going to like try to holistically heal it.
[00:04:32] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: I'm going to go get it set, put it in a cast, probably take some medication for the pain, but then I'm also going to like back off like for. Childbirth. I actually only medication I took, I put in air quotes was Arnica for the pain after childbirth. So I think there is definitely a time and a place for things.
[00:04:50] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: But I also very much know the, the holistic side. And so it's just become kind of who I am.
[00:04:57] Colette Brown: Yeah.
[00:04:57] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Yeah. That's
[00:04:58] Colette Brown: beautiful. So you become a chiropractor. And at what point did you decide I'm going to step out of this role and retire and step into this concierge medicine service?
[00:05:12] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Absolutely. I, what my daughter was.
[00:05:14] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Seven, I believe. So I was 16 years in practice. And I remember saying when I was in chiropractic school, I'm going to do this till I'm a hundred. I'm going to die in my office of some natural cause or but when my daughter was seven, I remember very vividly, we were at, I was, I had gotten home from the office around eight o'clock, she was already in her jammies.
[00:05:34] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Dinner was on the stove for me. And she said, mommy, are you going to the office tomorrow? And I kind of went, well, yeah, baby. And she was like, Oh, and I went, Ooh, this is starting to, she's starting to notice. And at that point in time, I was only in my office three days a week, but it was taking enough of a toll that I knew it was time to make a shift.
[00:05:54] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So I started to, I was already so in practice, it wasn't just about adjusting people, we always talked about holistic health. It was all how they're, how are they sleeping? What are they eating? I did things like shop with a doc and cooking classes. So I was teaching people on a more holistic level. And so I started to realize I was already a health concierge for people, but I was adjusting as well.
[00:06:18] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So when I decided to retire, I was like, well, I'm just going to continue doing what I was doing minus the adjusting piece. So, and that freed me up to do a lot more virtual work. So now I get to work with people across the country, which is great.
[00:06:31] Colette Brown: That's amazing. And one thing that I find that a lot of people don't know is that [00:06:40] chiropractors, some people think, Oh, it's a chiropractor, you know, kind of like brush it off, but they're, they're medical doctors.
[00:06:47] Colette Brown: They go through the same trajectory as medical school. And they split off when, when doctors start learning about all the Western medications and they spend, you know, years. Learning and they spend about a week actually learning about like a quote nutrition, which is not even good. And chiropractors take a different route and their path is actually going like cadavers and going through the body and learning how to adjust.
[00:07:16] Colette Brown: And so tell us a little bit more from your perspective and let people understand a little bit more of that differentiation. The degree to which you have to learn to become a chiropractor.
[00:07:28] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Oh, for sure. Yeah. It's, it's funny that you say that because when I was going into chiropractic school, I had already had five years under my belt with my BS.
[00:07:37] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: I was exercise physiology. So but then I had to go to, and I thought, Oh, chiropractic school, a couple of weekend courses and I'll be good. Cause I have a BS already now. That was a bunch of BS. To be honest. Yeah. Once I started to look into it, I'm like, Oh, this is three. three and a half more years of school.
[00:07:54] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: And I was like, wow, that's an investment in my time. So yeah, I have eight and a half years of school under my belt. And then all the continuing education beyond that. And what was interesting is in chiropractic school, like you said, we obviously have to know the human body. So we spent a lot of time in anatomy and physiology because it's not just the adjustment.
[00:08:12] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: It's what does the adjustment do? So a lot of times in chiropractic, my job was to educate people about. It's not back pain, neck pain, or headaches. That's not what chiropractic is. Chiropractic is really about how your body functions and allowing your body to function at a higher level because we're removing interference with the adjustment.
[00:08:33] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So we had to understand so many different things from a physiological perspective. I mean, we took, infectious diseases. We had to understand biochemistry. Like it was such a broad education and here's the thing. We got one class in toxicology. So to be fair, like we didn't get any pharmacology, but we got one 12 week course in toxicology.
[00:08:56] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: And so I think that's where it kind of flip flops with medical,
[00:08:59] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: it was a very grueling three and a half years, but well worth it. And I actually went back after two years out, I went back to teach at the chiropractic school in anatomy because I thought it was so much fun. So I went back into the cadaver labs and I was teaching the students and it was, it was a blast.
[00:09:17] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: I taught for a couple of years. So
[00:09:19] Colette Brown: there's a That's amazing. I, and I, I so appreciate chiropractors and a great adjustment. I always feel better after, after I get an adjustment. So let's dive in right now. I want to really focus on toxicity. And I'd also like to focus in on parasites because you're actually starting a Is it a month long parasite cleanse and it's virtual and that starting in February.
[00:09:46] Colette Brown: And so why don't you tell us why is it important to detoxify and in particular parasites, tell us what they do and where do we get them from?
[00:09:56] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Yes, absolutely. So that's a loaded question. Keep me on track if I go into left field. So first and foremost, I think detoxification is something that a lot of people hear.
[00:10:05] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: A lot of people are like, Oh, I need to do a detox. I need to get the toxins out of my system. Well, yes, we are in a very toxic world and even more so where you are right now, just with the fires and dealing with all the environmental toxins that have come from that. And the way that I like to explain detox is we all have a bucket.
[00:10:22] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Imagine everybody has their own bucket on the inside. And when that bucket gets filled up, that's our toxic load. When that gets filled up and it overflows, that's when we start to see symptoms. So it's not necessarily just when we have symptoms that there's a problem. There's always an underlying, like, level of toxicity that we need, that our body is naturally dealing with.
[00:10:45] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So we all also have different holes in the bottom of the bucket. from how well we're eating, how well we're sleeping, any supplements we're taking aren't the nutrition, like everything in general is opening up the level, the bucket and the bottom to drain some of those toxins out. So I always tell people don't wait until you're in a place of.
[00:11:09] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Overload of toxicity and you're really sick. It's better to make sure that your bucket is as empty as possible Just in case you come into a situation like you're dealing with now where there's a lot of toxins in the air
[00:11:21] Colette Brown: Yeah,
[00:11:22] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: or the world and we have to just be able to get rid of them faster be able to combat them So that's detox in general now why parasites?
[00:11:30] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: And this is something I never thought that I wouldn't find myself in however When I was going through my own healing crisis that was actually shortly after I retired from chiropractic, that let down of 16 years of like pushing hard.
[00:11:45] Colette Brown: Yeah.
[00:11:45] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: I didn't realize I was burned out. And so I found myself exhausted and needing to do more detox.
[00:11:52] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So a friend of mine was like, Hey, have you ever done a parasite cleanse? And I'm like, Nope. So I started to do one and actually it didn't go well because I was so overloaded with other things that I needed my system to be ready for the parasite cleanse. So I always tell people there's there's an order in which we need to detox and parasites tend to be what we call a root cause issue.
[00:12:16] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So if somebody's got low energy levels, poor, poor digestion sugar cravings, poor sleep, really bad immune health. They're sick all the time. Maybe they have a hard time losing weight or hormone balance issues. All of those things, believe it or not, can be reversed if you get rid of some of the parasites.
[00:12:38] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: I actually, so I lead these group parasite cleanses just about once a month. We started one off in January. I'm actually currently doing it with this group. I parasite cleanse about twice a year. And one of the women inside, it was mind blowing, a couple of days ago she shot me a text, and she's like, Hey, side note I haven't had my cycle for six to nine months.
[00:12:59] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: And she's like, my period just came back. Is it possible that the parasite cleanse balanced my hormones? And I said, a hundred percent. Your body, being so overladen with parasites, it can't actually function the way that it's supposed to. And I go to the through this a lot in the parasite cleanse group, [00:13:20] but the parasites actually feed on different neurotransmitters and hormones in our own body.
[00:13:24] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Wow. So. It's wild. It's super scary. So like, serotonin levels, if people are grumpy or their mood imbalances, it's actually not, might not necessarily be them, it might be the parasites. So, and here's the thing. You asked where do we get them. They actually, it's not just for those who travel overseas. It's not just people in third world countries.
[00:13:45] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: They're all around us. All the time. They're on our food supply. They're on our water supply. If you have pets that our pets have them and think about this, how often do we deworm our pets and how often do we deworm ourselves? Because if we're doing it for them, we should be doing it for us as well. So they come in in many places.
[00:14:05] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So like I said, food supply, if people, if you eat sushi, that's a really big place that they come. Lots of fruits and vegetables if they're not being washed properly. There's a lot just in the environment as well. So lakes, rivers, streams, so if you're swimming, they are at the beaches, so I know you're on the coast.
[00:14:20] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: I remember I was on a beach one time, and I remember just we were walking in the sand, and I'm like, there's these little worms crawling around, and I'm like, okay. I got a close up shot of them, and I'm like, okay. Now, and I spent my life in San Diego growing up. Playing at the beach. So I'm like, there's probably where I picked up a fair number of 'em.
[00:14:38] Colette Brown: Yeah. So. Right, right. So how do you get rid of parasites without hurting the body? Is it very gentle process? Can you explain how that goes?
[00:14:47] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Absolutely. So I've partnered with a phenomenal supplement company and they have a parasite cleanse that either lasts for three, five or seven days. And so I started to, and they also have then longer protocols that are like four or six months and I'm like, there's gotta be a medium in between the two.
[00:15:04] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So as I started to work with clients and do the parasite cleanse myself, I actually found the 30 day. protocol is the best to be able to first and foremost, we start with opening up the detox pathways. So opening up the body to be able to release. And so it's through a series of supplementation. It's also a great idea to eat and balanced diet during these, these times of parasite cleansing, because believe it or not, those parasites actually cause you to crave sugar sweets and carbs.
[00:15:35] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So if you're eating a lot of those, you're probably feeding them. And so, a balanced diet, lots of good water, good sleep but yeah, it's, it's a very simple supplement regimen that I have laid out like a dosage chart, and it's really awesome. It's very easy to incorporate into life.
[00:15:55] Colette Brown: And how do people know if they're toxic?
[00:15:58] Colette Brown: Some people might say, Oh, I'm fine. You know, I don't, I don't have cravings or but I, I think that probably every person has parasites, right? And it will just manifest differently as you were talking about earlier with the bucket analogy. So tell us what symptoms to look for when you're trying to detox.
[00:16:17] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Absolutely. So some of the symptoms in general for parasites, and I actually created a parasite quiz and I believe you're going to stick that in the show notes so people can take it, but it's, it's random things that you wouldn't necessarily think have anything to do with parasites. So like grinding your teeth at night or drooling while you sleep more anxiety or stress around a full moon or difficulty with sleeping.
[00:16:39] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So, especially around that full moon time, because. And it's around the full moon because there our serotonin levels are up because there's more light because the moon is full and parasites love to feed on serotonin, so it's one of their things that they need in order to be able to continue to survive.
[00:16:56] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So it's wild. It fascinating.
[00:16:58] Colette Brown: It's so, that's why people get crazy when there's a full moon. Yes. It's not them. It's their parasites. The parasite,
[00:17:04] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: right? It's that other rid them of the parasites and they become like much more joyful to be around. Ask my husband. I'm, I'm much better when I'm cleansing.
[00:17:14] Colette Brown: So how do, how do people know when they start, when it's working, do you actually see them when they're coming out?
[00:17:22] Colette Brown: What are you looking for to know that you've actually cleansed?
[00:17:26] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Yeah. So people, there are some people on the cleanse who actually have a lot of anxiety. And just naturally like not being on the parasite cleanse. And when they pass a parasite, that anxiety is calmed. It's very interesting. There's definitely an emotional component to the parasite pieces.
[00:17:43] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: But to answer your question really specifically and not too graphically, yes, they do pass in your stool. Sometimes you can see them just by turning around and taking a look, but most of the time they are wrapped in the stool. So unless you go poking around, you're not necessarily going to see them.
[00:18:00] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: But for me personally, I know that I've passed one because I feel very bloated. When they're dying off, because when they die off, they basically what we call off gas. So they'll release their toxin. They're
[00:18:13] Colette Brown: fermenting.
[00:18:15] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Exactly. They ferment. So I bloat personally. And then when I pass them that bloat diminishes and I'm like, Oh, so there's definitely a feeling to it.
[00:18:25] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: And some people don't notice anything. They're still passing parasites.
[00:18:29] Colette Brown: And how did the, the parasites interact with our microbiome?
[00:18:33] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Oh, absolutely. It's that's a great question. So parasites actually are very sneaky. They want to stay alive. Right? So one of the things that they actually do is they create what's called a biofilm.
[00:18:44] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So on the inside of our intestines, so they can hide from our immune system. Exactly. They like put on their secret. Cape or something but that's actually something that also passes in the parasite cleanse that biofilm is released from the intestinal wall. But the way they start to like I said, they create cravings, but in our microbiome, it just creates when they're there, there's more bloating, there's more gas, there's more irregular bowel movements and our gut flora tends to be off.
[00:19:15] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: More when they're in when they're inside. So people, once they finish the cleanse or they've done multiple rounds they'll start to notice that they're absorbing nutrients better. They feel more full with a smaller meal because they're actually getting more of the food. Parasites aren't stealing the nutrients.
[00:19:36] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: And actually this is pretty interesting hair, nails, skin start to improve because again, our body is detoxing from a lot of those toxins and actually it just helps to boost your overall immune system and health.
[00:19:50] Colette Brown: Yeah. And I would say for those people who You are healthy already and you haven't done one.
[00:19:58] Colette Brown: I think what, [00:20:00] what a great time, especially to just, just start and detox and start feeling better. And especially if you're in LA, like this is really bad here. The toxicity and then to make your body function even better. What a gift that you give yourself. What are the ages that people that can do this?
[00:20:19] Colette Brown: Can kids do it? Like
[00:20:20] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Kids can do it. My daughter actually started doing this when she was six. You actually have to be able to, well, you don't have to, there's two different ways. I, most, most people go through the one with capsules. You can actually very easily open these capsules and mix it in with a smoothie or something, so kids can take it that way.
[00:20:38] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: But I also have a friend who has, It's a homemade tincture for parasite cleansing that is great for kids. I've got a three year old actually on the cleanse right now but she's doing the tincture based. So it's definitely something for all ages. I mean, my, my daughter probably could have used parasite cleansing before cause we, we traveled a lot to Mexico when she was young.
[00:21:00] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: And they're, like I said, there are parasites in other countries that are very much here too. So
[00:21:06] Colette Brown: yeah, they are, they're everywhere and you have to be so careful about what you're drinking and, and eating and it will happen. Like you said, like you, you will get these. So when you are traveling to, let's say Mexico, do you have any tips to give people on trying to bypass getting more than.
[00:21:27] Colette Brown: More than what you need. I mean, cause you're going to get some, right?
[00:21:30] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: You are absolutely. I actually recommend that people travel with a binder. So, and what there's the company that I use, there's four different binders that they have, but there's one in general that is good for just gut health and it's called a biotoxin binder.
[00:21:45] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So it's going to grab toxins. And in Mexico or other countries, just be careful of where you're eating. I mean, my husband grew up in Mexico, so we go to those taco trucks on the side of the road because that's where he went when he was a kid. But then I also do make sure if we're going to be traveling, I will do a cleanse or just make sure that we've got some binders on hand.
[00:22:09] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Just being aware. I think is one of the biggest things is okay. And here's the thing. There's a lot of parasites in sushi. And guess what? I went and had sushi last night. I'm aware. I, I know that where they are, but I also know that my bucket has a lot of holes in the bottom. So, and I do regular cleansing.
[00:22:29] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So I think that's important to remember.
[00:22:31] Colette Brown: Well, it also other cultures, so you're talking about sushi, they serve ginger for a reason is to help. Kill off any of those parasites or bacteria that you're eating. So they have this pairing of food so that they help to offset it. So, all right. So what binders is, is activated charcoal a good binder or that's not really one for parasites?
[00:22:57] Colette Brown: It's a very,
[00:22:58] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: it's not
[00:22:59] Colette Brown: great
[00:22:59] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: for parasites. No, it's a very low level. Like if you get a tummy upset, yes activated charcoal would be great. But for something on that's going to actually bind either chemicals or toxins, you need something a little bit stronger.
[00:23:13] Colette Brown: Okay. All right. So what does the program look like?
[00:23:16] Colette Brown: Can you tell us about that? Absolutely. So it's
[00:23:19] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: a four week program. Week one is very much focused on opening up and making sure that you are pooping, peeing and sweating. So we do more of what we call a drainage activator and we're doing more of the binder. There are still some parasite killing supplements on board at that time, but they're lower dosage.
[00:23:36] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: And then as we continue into weeks two, three, and four, we're actually increasing the doses of parasite cleansing supplements while at the same time staying on the binders and the drainage to make sure that it's most effective in being able to flush the system. Because if you're just killing off a whole bunch of parasites, but they're staying in your system, you're going to be in a world of hurt.
[00:23:56] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: So. It's, like I said, it's a very simple process. I tell people you've got to make sure you're drinking plenty of water on the cleanse. Make sure you're getting lots of good, healthy food in your system and try to eliminate sweets and carbs as much as possible.
[00:24:12] Colette Brown: Yes.
[00:24:13] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: And alcohol as well. That's obviously a sugar.
[00:24:15] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: But
[00:24:15] Colette Brown: Right. So there's, there's a recommendation of for women to eat 25 grams a day and for men to eat 35 grams a day of sugar. And so I I've had people tell me that doesn't include fruit. I think it includes fruit because I believe a sugar is a sugar. And what are your thoughts on that?
[00:24:36] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: I 100 percent agree with you.
[00:24:37] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: I think we can get plenty of the natural sugars. In fruits. We don't need to have all the, it's the processed piece that really affects us. Yeah. I think it's way. I mean, in honey, I use honey as a sweetener all the time in teas. Maple syrup. Yes, of course. Like the basic natural things that are there versus the white refined sugar or the artificial sweeteners are really, again, those they're artificial sweetener.
[00:25:02] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Our body can't recognize it, so it doesn't know what to do with it. It becomes a toxin.
[00:25:05] Colette Brown: Yeah. Right. This is all great information. I love it. And one of the questions that I ask all my guests as we get towards the end is if this was your last message that you had to broadcast out to the world, what would it be?
[00:25:20] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: Be gentle with yourself and others and take good care of your health because to be honest, when you don't have your health, nothing else matters. And you can't buy back your health necessarily. So investing in your health now is going to save you in the long term from having to pay for it in a bigger way.
[00:25:41] Colette Brown: That's good. There's that quote that they say, some people spend their life building their wealth and then spend their wealth to regain their health. So why not take care of yourself on the way while you're building so that you can enjoy your life and your family and what you've created in this world.
[00:26:00] Colette Brown: So much. Is there anything else that I missed that you wanted to touch on or share today?
[00:26:05] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: No, I think we've covered it. I just, I, I really want to empower people. I think that's my biggest goal is not to be afraid of detox or afraid of how hard an air quotes again, being healthy can be. It's a choice. And so you can, like you said, you can either choose the donut or you can choose the.
[00:26:26] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: egg protein breakfast. And believe me, that's a hard choice for me because I love donuts. However, I haven't had one in over, I don't know, a year because it's a choice. I, I, I choose to [00:26:40] invest in my health for the long term because I, I want to be, I had my daughter when I was a little bit older.
[00:26:44] Dr. Patti Gonzalez: I had her when I was 39. So I want to enjoy her. I want to enjoy her kids. And so investing in your health is the way to do that.
[00:26:53] Colette Brown: I so appreciate your time, Patty, and we could go on and on. But. Please check her out. She's on Instagram. Why don't you tell people where they can find you? Absolutely. You can find me on Instagram at dr.
