"Let's start with Physical Self-Care. How well are you caring for your body's basic needs? Are you getting adequate sleep, moving in ways that feel good, nourishing yourself well, and attending to your health? Give yourself a number from 1 to 10.
Next, Relational Self-Care. How intentional are you about nurturing your meaningful relationships? Are you setting healthy boundaries, communicating with love and respect, and surrounding yourself with people who support your growth? What's your number?
Now Emotional Self-Care. How skilled are you at navigating your emotional world? Can you identify what you're feeling, express emotions in healthy ways, and comfort yourself during difficult times? Rate yourself honestly.
Mental Self-Care—how well are you caring for your cognitive health? Are you challenging your mind, practicing presence, managing stress effectively, and creating mental space for clarity? What number feels true?
Spiritual Self-Care—how connected do you feel to your deeper purpose and values? Are you taking time for reflection, gratitude, and whatever practices connect you to something greater than yourself? Give yourself a rating.
Finally, Psychological Self-Care—how well do you understand and care for your overall psychological well-being? Are you practicing self-compassion, working toward meaningful goals, and building a healthy relationship with yourself? What's your number?"
Reframing the Assessment
"Now, look at those numbers. I want you to hear this: Whatever numbers you wrote down—even if some of them are 1s or 2s—this is not a report card on your worth. This is simply data. This is your starting point, your baseline, your 'here's where I am now' moment.
And here's what's beautiful about being human: Every single number can improve. Every single domain can grow. Every single area where you're struggling right now? That's not a permanent address—that's just where you're visiting today."
The Science of Change
"Dorothea Orem taught us that when we have a self-care deficit—when we're not meeting our needs in one or more areas—we don't have to stay there. We have agency. We have the power to change our circumstances through intentional, consistent action.
The domains where you scored lower aren't broken parts of you that need fixing. They're simply areas that are asking for more attention, more care, more intentional nurturing." Dr. Donita Brown
